1 Joseph W. Jackson ( ) Photograph Collection, ca FB-109 Introduction The collection includes photographs, mostly of people, from the family of Joseph W. Joe Jackson, a doctor from Barre, Vermont, from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Jules Rabin of Marshfield, Vermont, donated the collection to the Vermont Historical Society, in March and June, 2004; he had purchased the collection in the summer of The collection is housed in three archival flip-top boxes and occupies 1.25 linear feet of shelf space. Biographical Note Dr. Joseph Wells Jackson was born in Stockholm, New York, on April 25, 1868, the only child of Dr. John Henry Jackson and Anna Dutton Wells. After his wife s death in November 1868, Dr. J. Henry Jackson married Coralinn Augusta Wood and had three more sons, Arthur Wood Jackson, Fred Kinney Jackson, and Henry Hollister Jackson. Dr. Joseph Jackson was educated at Barre Academy, Goddard Seminary, Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, and received his M.D. at the University of Vermont's College of Medicine in He interned at Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington, Vermont, Butler Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, and in Danvers Asylum, near Salem, Massachusetts. He married Susan F. Emery ( ) of St. Albans, ME, on February 22, 1893, and began practicing medicine in Barre, Vermont, at that time. The Jacksons' adoptive son, Edward Wells Jackson, was born in Georgetown, Massachusetts, on August 13, Edward Jackson became a pharmacist and was the proprietor of drug stores in Montpelier, Vermont, and, later, in Port Huron, Michigan. Joseph Jackson later married Sarah Reynolds Penn (1887-), a widow with three daughters, on Sept. 17, Dr. Joseph Jackson practiced medicine for 44 years and was the health officer for the city of Barre, Vermont, during the period During the Spanish-American War he served as assistant surgeon of the First Regiment of the Vermont National Guard, and was later active in the United Spanish War Veterans Association, holding many offices. An avid collector of coins and stamps, he was also active in the Boy Scouts of America and in freemasonry. He was also a long time member of the Clan Gordon No 12, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and Modern Woodmen of America, and served as school commissioner. Dr. Jackson lived and 29 S. Main St., Barre, and had summer cottages in St. Albans, Maine; and Graniteville, Vermont. After a fall in which he fractured a femur in 1936, Dr. Jackson was incapacitated and could no longer practice medicine. He died at home on November 27, 1937.

2 Joseph W. Jackson Photograph Collection 2 Scope and Content Note This collection contains photographs accumulated by Dr. Joseph W. Jackson of Barre, Vermont, during the latter part of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. They reflect his family associations and personal friendships. There are a few photographs of Barre and many photographs of vacation travels. The collection also includes some clippings about the Spanish-American War and Barre; some ephemera, both personal and related to Barre, and some wedding invitations. Related Collections The Vermont Historical Society owns a manuscript collection, the Jackson/Wood/Kinney family papers (MSA 78), that includes a memoir about growing up written by Joe Jackson s brother, Fred.
