Jared, John - (Rev l War Veteran: Guard) - Woodworker b. 25 June 1737, Isle of Wight, Bedford, VA d. after 1805, KY Wagonmaker, spinning wheels, etc. & Storekeeper & Revolutionary War Veteran. s/o Thomas & Martha (Kinchin) Jarrell/Jarrett English Descent. md 2 nd 23 August 1767, near Taylors Mill, Loudoun, VA, Rachel Palmer b. ca Rachel was 18 yrs. old when she md John Jared. John Jared took a firm stand and declared the spelling of his last name to be Jared, Same as in the Old Testament. Family tradition tells us John said It was Jared in the Bible. It is Jared now! We are the descendants of ancient Jared, the grandfather of Methuselah, and the next person to him in longevity. Methuselah lived to be 969 yrs. old. His grandfather Jared lived to be 962 yrs. old. Methuselah s son was Lamech who was the father of Noah. Still some of his sons held to their own preferred spelling, so we have several ways to spell the surname, Jared; Jarred, Jarrett, Jarrell, Jarrard & Gerard, Gerrard. References to Rev l War service: Book of Jared, Vol. 1, pg. 18, shows notes from John Jared s account book in which he wrote: In yr by work done by him (William Jared) at home I went to camp. In 1782 By tending sawmills for me and Mr. Neilson and by guarding the prisoners at Winchester. In 1782 Cornwallis army was held prisoner in VA. Winchester is about 15 miles from Charles Town, WV. A list of soldiers of the VA line on Continental Establishment who have received Certificates for the balances of their full pay agreeable to an Act of Assembly passed November session in It lists Math Anderson received L 900, November 2, 1787, for John Jarrott. John had moved to Bedford, VA by this time and so Math was probably acting as his power of attorney or had cashed or purchased his Certificate. History Register VA-Rev l by Gwathney pg. 414 shows: John Jarrett, Jarriott, Jarrott is listed three times, with the indication that they re the same person, all in the 7 th VA, Regm t of the Continental Line. Camp meetings were held by preachers traveling over wide areas to economize on time and distance. preachers would advertise a series of meetings at certain points. Those not so religiously inclined would come for the social aspect of such a gathering. So a mere handful of preachers could distribute their services over a large area, and reach people who otherwise it would have been impossible to reach. William Jared' time was a restless period. Such movement as Spiritualism and Temperance came into existence. The wilderness parts of the nation were filling up. New opportunities arose on every front, and the nation became extremely individualistic. The church became highly emotionalized. Denominations found it hard to agree within their own congregation, let alone with other denominations. The nation was struggling to level itself into a strong Union on the heels of the Revolutionary War. Still seeds of the Civil War were germinating in the minds of certain ambitious politicians. Certainly at this point in our national history the role of the Minister was an important one. They then came up into IL and stopped in Morgan Co. to see if the Indians were gone. Leaving Morgan County after one year, they came on to Warren County. Joel, a brother of John, settled north and west of John s place. Joel Jared married Loretta Adkisson, a sister of Bill Adkisson. Their father was Pleasant Adkisson. William Jared, a brother of John and Joel, settled on land where the farm home of Albert Holeman, now is. When she was old and lived among her children she walked and carried her featherbed when moving from one place to another.

14 John was a hardy pioneer and kept a pack of trained hounds. He was a lover of deer hunting. He farmed in the spring and summer and ran a horse-powered threshing machine during the fall and winter. It was said he did more threshing than any other man in the country. He was a Democrat and a strong Christian. He died at the home of his daughter, Mary Ann Jennings in Prairie City, IL. He was a strong character, and believed it very foolish to belong to a habit such as smoking or drinking. He used to say, when he saw someone smoking, Fire on one end Fool on the other. His wives were Ann Riper and Nettie Womack. Ann Riper was a widow who had two children, but John s marriage with her was not compatible and they separated after a few years. John went to Wildwood, OK about 1889 at the time the Indian Territory was being opened up for claims. John rode a mule from the starting point nine miles north of Loyal, OK, to establish his homestead claim to 160 acres. Many of John s descendants now reside in OK. Jim L. S. declared war on Germany, the county literally broke out in red, white, and blue. Brass bands blared out brave marches and patriotic hymns in every corner of the land. The studios of the nations photographers worked overtime making portraits of men in uniform against backdrops of flags and bunting as in this studio photograph of a young couple. This photo hangs in the Cookeville History Museum in Cookeville, Putnam Co., TN.
