1 Connecting National and Local Secretariats Volume 27 Number 4 Nov Official Publication of the National Lutheran Secretariat, VdC NLS 2010 Annual Meeting: July 22 25, 2010 Hosted by Minnesota Let your light shine. Matthew 5:16 In Minnesota, light is treasured and appreciated. As we approach the end of the year, our hours of daylight narrow down to a little over eight, with sunrise around 7:45am and sunset near 4:30pm. Some days it feels like you go to work in the dark and come home in the dark and oh, are sunny days appreciated! For a lot of us, knowing that after the 21 st of December our days will start getting longer even if just by a few minutes! is a cause for celebration. We know that the long days of summer sunshine are coming, with sunrise around 5am and sunset at 9pm that s over 16 hours! We re rich in daylight! It is with this background that the Minnesota Host Committee for the 2010 NLS Annual Meeting has been meeting and planning. The NLS Board just completed their midyear meeting in the Twin Cities with us we toured the facilities at Northwestern College, met with the Board for consultation and advice, and worshipped and supped together. Lots of ideas for the July meeting were floated: our music chair gave us a taste of his proficiency on the piano, someone suggested a bonfire for one evening s entertainment and we have a beautiful lake on campus to stroll around along with a bridge to the island. We ll be working through all these ideas and more ( just where ARE the bathrooms located?! ) in the coming weeks and months. Details regarding seminars, housing, and registration will soon be available through the Conexiones, and please check the NLS website for information as it becomes available. We also plan to have links available there for activities and places around the Twin Cities and the Minnesota/Wisconsin area that may be enticing for those who would like to come early or stay after the meeting. Don't forget to check out; for more ideas. Remember LONG days of sunshine during July! The Minnesota Host Committee invites you to think about, pray about, and look forward to a blessed time of worship, fellowship, business and growth at the 2010 NLS Annual Meeting, July 22-25, 2010, at Northwestern College in the Twin Cities. 3 V.P. of Outreach Happy fall and blessings to all of you! Thank you so much for welcoming me into the Via de Cristo Executive Board! As the new VP of Outreach, I have heard from many of you and thank you for reaching out to me. I am excited to hear the stories about how God is touching your lives to reach out to others. Just since July I have been contacted by 6 groups who have interest in starting a new movement. WOW how exciting! Most of this interest in coming from areas which we don t currently have a community. God calls us to be His hands and feet. We are to feed His people with the Word, using the Holy Spirit to guide us. The advice I have given all groups interested in birthing a new community is to: As the VP of Outreach, it s not only my job to help start new communities, but to also work with communities interested in expanding and growing their own communities. Throughout the next month I will be looking for Regional Outreach Representatives to support me in these efforts. The focus of these Representatives will be to share best practices from across the United States regarding expanding our current community. We will meet via phone conference throughout the year. I will work with the Representatives to establish a core set of common challenges each of our communities are facing. Then the mission of the Representative will be to begin talking with the Secretariats in their region to capture ideas to overcome the popular challenges. This information will be shared with all Regional Outreach Representatives and Lay Directors as strategies to implement within their own communities. If you are interested in supporting this mission and becoming your Region s Outreach Representative, please call me. Of course, please never hesitate to contact me if there is anything I can do to support the growth of your communities or interest to birth a new community. I can be reached via at sgielda@cox.net or phone at Pray first, last, and always for direction and clarity Be sure all people interested in starting the new community are engaged in a Reunion Group Develop a plan to reach out to the pastors and churches in your area Begin hosting Ultreyas to share the Good News and purpose of Via de Cristo. DeColores and God Bless! Steve Gielda It can take up to 24 months to be ready to run your first weekend. Let me share a quick story about Journey in Faith, a new community recently started in Eastern Pennsylvania. Back in August 2007, a small band of disciples wanted to birth a new community. They began with the four steps listed above. Through constant prayer and hard work, they launched their first Journey in Faith Co-Ed weekend in May This fall they are launching their first single sex Journey in Faith #1 for Men and for Women. Through the grace of God these weekends have all gone over very well. One of the most exciting outcomes is the fact that these fall weekends had representation from 7 different Via de Cristo communities! YES SEVEN! This demonstrates the power of God s love and the strength of the VdC community. Team members drove from Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland to serve on these Men s and Women s weekends. This is what it takes to birth a new community! All of God s people coming together to serve Him!

We discussed ways of improving the agenda and possibly using different means of modeling ways to implement ideas at the National Meeting. Secretary s Report Katie sent out packets of materials from the National Meeting to the absent secretariats in August. Called attention to the new name for Lutheran Via de Cristo of North Texas (formerly North Texas Lutheran Secretariat). One more secretariat sent the survey information from She needs two more. Lucy Hightower and the secretary are exchanging information to coordinate efforts to have accurate records for the data base. We need to work on a more efficient way of seating and honoring the delegates at the National Meeting. Treasurer s Report Bob stated that the checking balance is $7676, and the Thrivent account balance is $34,323. Discussed the need to have reasonable reimbursement for travel and agreed to keep the 25 cents a mile reimbursement for speakers and board. Bob is to talk with Joe Nilsen regarding how the donation of book sales will be handled since the profit is intended to go to the endowment fund. Vice President of Outreach Report Steve reported on contacts with various groups interested in affiliating with NLS and a possible merger between two secretariats. 5 5 NLS President s Report Let your light Shine Matt., 5:16 in every season! Where I live in Ohio, we definitely experience all four seasons of the year. While we rarely have a lot of snow we can always count on a couple of storms dropping 5 or more inches (I love a fresh snowfall). Spring is usually bright and refreshing, as the life returns to our fields, summers are warm and bright throughout the growing season and the fall creates a beautiful abundance of color. So, while today is cold and dreary, I have unwavering confidence that within a matter of weeks, perhaps even days, the weather will bring me something bright and refreshing to rejoice in. Today, I attended the funeral of a family friend. The pastor used the Ecclesiastes 3 passage about a time for everything. He reminded us that, though today we deal with death and today is a time for grieving, there is also a time for rejoicing and a time for living coming soon. Our Lord Jesus Christ has conquered death and will call us in love to life everlasting. Each day we remember the wisdom that there is a time for every purpose under heaven. I was reminded that even though, at times, I am tempted by darkness, even at times tempted to despair, there is brightness coming soon and Christ and the church are my forever companions. WE take each of the seasons as they come. The Via de Cristo method encourages us in this world of seasons. Our reunion groups challenge and encourage us to stick to our plan through each of the seasons. We report to one another our successes and failures, and remember those special close moments that Christ offers us so regularly. We meet often to urge each other on; ULTREYA. Through spiritual direction we reflect on the ups and downs during each of the seasons as they come to us. Our annual meeting is coming up in July. It will be summer in Minnesota and delightfully refreshing. We will meet and share how we can keep this wonderful movement on task. We will rejoice in ways that renew and refresh us. We will discuss our problems, the common ones and the unique ones. Using our theme Let your light shine we will be inspired to keep our movement loyal to the founders and honoring to our Lord Jesus Christ. I am looking forward to our time together. I can t wait to see some old friends, meet some new ones and share this time with all my brothers and sister is Christ who love this movement. God loves you and so do I! Tracy Schmidlin NATIONAL COORDINATOR POSITION - FUNDING OPPORTUNITY Pastor Joe Nilsen, former NLS Spiritual Director has written a book and is graciously contributing all of the proceeds toward funding NLS National Coordinator position. The book is entitled Lost and Found and was first available during the NLSAM. Joe states, Many people would like to write a book sometime during their life. Joe goes onto to say, I wrote the book: 1) for fun, 2) hopefully to be entertaining to those who read it, 3) so that I wouldn t be embarrassed to have it read by my children and grandchildren and 4) so that the nonbelievers would encounter a main character who is spiritual and moral, but at the same time, very human. You can also purchase the book for $15.00 at amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com. Copies are also available through Joe at joenils@frontiernet.net. Please consider buying Joe s book since you and the NLS both will gain from your purchase!

6 6 SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR S REPORT Over fall break our son, Joel, had his good buddy over for an overnight.. At his age they are determined to stay up later than the parents and when I got up the next morning I was surprised by what I saw in his room. Rather than the bunk beds I had built and put together for such an occasion, they had pulled all the bedding down and were sleeping on the floor! What was most surprising is that they were asleep but every light in the room was on! The dresser, the desk and the bedside lamp were on.perhaps they were afraid of the darkness..i don t know. We have a small night light in our bedroom for over night needs but generally I like to fall asleep in the dark as I imagine you do also. These days on the calendar are dark as we await a time change that might make a difference. The days will get darker as we head through winter. On some level, I would say that, spiritually, these are dark days as well. As we collectively pray over the issues churches and denominations face it does seem dark. But then a light shines we get called to a weekend, a fellow VDC sister or brother writes a note, we feel at peace during prayer, worship is touching and the list of light goes on. On my daily calendar last week was a quote by Ruth Renkel that says Never fear shadows. They simply mean there s alight shining somewhere nearby. Amen, Ruth! The Light shining nearby is our Lord Jesus and that light He brings is exactly what the Gospel of John (chapter 8) speaks of You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. Ah, yes.the truth and the light of Jesus in our midst. No matter what we are going through, no matter the present darkness we feel in our souls or spirit, we have the Light of Christ! It was this very light that our good friend Martin Luther pointed to when he discovered the darkness of never getting it right with God by our own merit! In Romans we read we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (3:23) and then we read in chapter 5 of Romans but at the same time, God sent Jesus to die for us. And we rejoice and we are glad. The light shines out into the darkness and cannot be hidden. Jim is sitting next to the window and light filters in on his chair. He is in the reflections unit of the nursing home and has Alzheimer s. He can t remember his wife s funeral just a few days prior. He was there. He takes a breath and pauses and says life is strange, the things that happen to a person. I assume life seems strange for him all the time and as I was leaving he took my hand and thanked me for visiting. I said God Bless you and he said He already has.. As Jim looks for light, you and I need not be afraid. God Bless, Pastor Doug ATTENTION: Important information concerning the NLS Distribution Center. The NLS "Web Page Order Form" is broken and I have no information about when it will again be operational. During this time you can go to the web site to get a listing of available items and their prices however you will need to send your orders to me via or telephone call. The web site has my contact information. Be sure to include all your information such as name, shipping address, telephone number, , and of course the items you are needing. Please also check your supplies early, I've recently been sending several orders via RUSH shipping. In this case rush means "expensive". I still have about ten of the DVD disks that were distributed at the FL Annual Meeting, the title is: "Sponsorship 101 from Good News VDC". I'm selling them for $7.00 until they are gone, after that you will need to order them from Bob Veres at Good News. This is not the same as the Sponsorship DVD that is listed on the NLS web site. 7 7 From the Archivist/Historian I am creating a collection of items that we can archive for the National Lutheran Secretariat. The task is daunting without your help. So, I would like to do this. Anyone (or if you know someone) who has anything that might be worthy of being archived in the NLS "vault", please let me know what you have. Do not include past issues of Conexiones, NLS audio tapes or NLS video tapes or CDs. We have plenty of these items. But anything else you have I would like to know about. Promises, Promises! MAYBE? Is your secretariat one of those who has promised to send in an updated list of your secretariat members, but maybe it s been forgotten. Do you know a member of your local secretariat who isn t getting notices when our latest newsletter is posted on line? If so, maybe our list is not up-to-date. Are you receiving a hard copy of the newsletter in the mail, but you have a valid address? Then, maybe we need for you to send us your correct address. Or, you might just want to check with your Lay Director (or president, or whatever you call the person in that position). We have at least four secretariats whose leaders have promised us an update but are not responding to our reminders and requests. Also, if your secretariat is holding elections anytime soon, please help your lay leader by reminding him or her to send an updated list to our database coordinator, Lucy Hightower, at bhigh922@aol.com anytime there is a change or addition. You can also mail the information to 404 Church St., Mt. Pleasant, SC If you d like to inquire about the status of your secretariat s information, you can contact Lucy at the same address or by regular mail. Your help will be appreciated. Ideally, I would like to physically have your items. Perhaps you might be willing to send me what you have because you don't have the space or you would like to see the NLS have them. Are you moving and don't wish to move the items again? Or maybe some of these items were packed away from a deceased spouse or parents. Your cost of shipping will be reimbursed. Here's a second choice. Don't send me anything, just let know what you have. If they are documents and you don't wish to part with them, copy and mail or scan and them to me. I'm thinking that in the position of archivist/historian, I don't necessarily need to have all the documents myself, but to also become a coordinator of who has what. In effect, we all become a part of the archival process. Information I need would include: year of the item, description of the item. media (printed manual, magazine, binder, loose pages, etc.), subject (pictures, video, presentations, board documents, etc.), and perhaps how many you have. Of course there is a huge downside to this option. If someone has a historical document and they have a natural disaster or theft which results in the loss of the item, there wouldn't be a backup. But the option choices are yours. In thinking ahead toward NLS 2011, we will have important anniversaries coming up then. I think it would be great if we (NLS) could present what you have given us, but the contents will depend on you! As always, your help is appreciated! Ron Millard Archivist/Historian And remember, anyone can sign up to receive notices about the Conexiones on line; it s FREE! Lucy Hightower Data Base Coordinator
