Purpose of Workbook This workbook is designed to provide an easy method of studying the Book of Revelation. There are some who feel that Revelation is too difficult or cannot be understood. The purpose of this study is to show that Revelation can be understood and, most importantly, can be interpreted by using the Bible as the basis of interpretation There will be no need for a great knowledge of history. The only requirement is a willingness to study and understand the Bible. Although this workbook may be used alone, it is designed as a study guide for the commentary on Revelation titled Revelation For Christians Today. Answers to all questions in this workbook can be found in the corresponding passages in that commentary. References and page numbers are given in this workbook to facilitate the ease of study. References showing page numbers in the commentary are given in the following form: (C-pg. 183). In addition, scripture references will be given which relate to the questions so that the Bible may be its own interpreter. The lessons are designed to take you through a systematic study of Revelation. Questions are designed to emphasize the major points in the visions and illustrations are given to aid in understanding. Chapters are studied in a specific order to let the interpretation of Revelation build as it is studied. Once Revelation is interpreted by using the Bible as the source of interpretation, we should be able to arrive at one understanding of this marvelous book, instead of the many which are presently proposed. For a more complete interpretation of Revelation, please refer to Revelation for Christians Today. Answers to question not addressed in this workbook may he found in that commentary. Questions in this workbook are based on the text of the Authorized King James Version. But, this should present little or no problems to those desiring to use other versions.

Parallel Symbolism As we begin this study of Revelation, we must first examine how the book is written. It is a book of symbols. It is written in apocalyptic literature which makes use of various symbols to describe real events. Many of the prophets also used symbolic writings as they described the first coming of Christ and the church. Since these Old Testament prophecies have been fulfilled, we can examine the scriptures and understand how these symbols were used. Once we understand how these symbols are used in scripture, we can apply those meanings to the symbols in Revelation. This will give us a Biblical interpretation of the book of Revelation. There is a tremendous amount of symbolism used throughout the scriptures. We have long recognized that many people, items and events in the Old Testament were types of greater things to come in the New Testament. For example, the tabernacle was a likeness of the church; the great flood was a likeness of the final destruction of the world; and Moses was a likeness of Christ. It is easy enough to pick out these individual parallels of events to follow during the Christian age, but we must also understand the overall picture of symbolism dealing with the Christian age. This big picture of Old Testament symbolism is extremely important in the study of Revelation. The major events in the history of the nation of Israel were physical likenesses of spiritual events to follow during the time of Christ and the Christian dispensation. We call this, "parallel symbolism." By studying the sequence of these physical events of the Old Testament, we can learn much about the spiritual events to come in the gospel age. A great deal of information is given about this type of symbolism in the commentary on pages XIII XIV (revised edition). This big picture of physical/spiritual parallelism can be easily illustrated. Study closely the two drawings on this page. Immediately you will notice that the major events in the history of the Israelite nation parallel the major events of the Christian dispensation. The events dealing with Israel were literal, physical events that took place in the physical lives of the Israelites. They parallel the major spiritual events that take place in the spiritual lives of Christians today. In this lesson, we will explore the overall picture, but in lessons to follow, each of these major events will be studied in detail. These parallels will then be used to understand the symbolism being employed in the book of Revelation. PHYSICAL KINGDOM / SPIRITUAL KINGDOM The nation of Israel was a literal, physical kingdom of this earth. The major events pictured actually took place in the physical lives of the people. They represent spiritual events that take place in the Christian dispensation. Discuss each of the following parallels and think of others you may know. 1

1. As Moses came on the scene in Old Testament times, the children of Israel were slaves to the Egyptians. They were in physical bondage. 1. When Christ came to the earth the first time, all mankind was in the bondage of sin. They were slaves to sin. (Jno. 8:34) 2. Moses led the children of Israel out of physical bondage by leading them across the Red Sea. 2. Christ made it possible for all mankind to escape the bondage of sin by giving his blood on the cross. By our obedience to the gospel, we cross the spiritual Red Sea. 3. After crossing the Red Sea, the children of Israel traveled to mount Sinai. There Moses ascended up the mountain and brought back the Ten Commandments. This law was given to one nation - Israel. 3. After Christ shed his blood on the cross, he symbolically gave his new law on mount Zion. Micah 4:2 states, "For the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem." This law, the gospel, is for all nations. 4. Israel was God's chosen people. They received the Ten Commandments and followed Moses as he led them out of bondage across the Red Sea to their Promised Land of Canaan. 4. Christians are the chosen people of God today. As people obey the gospel of Christ, they are crossing the spiritual Red Sea, and Christ is leading them toward their Promised Land of heaven. 5. Israel was a physical kingdom. They were a nation with laws and government. Many times they waged war against the ungodly nations of this world. 5. The church is a spiritual kingdom and its laws are spiritual. The church wages spiritual war against the evils of this world, not physical war against world governments. 6. The time period in which Israel traveled from the Red Sea to the Jordan River is parallel to the period of time the church is in today. They wandered in the wilderness for 40 years as they awaited their Promised Land. 6. The church is situated in the wilderness of this world today. It is awaiting the spiritual Promised Land of heaven. This symbolic period of time is described in Revelation as 1000 years. The spiritual 1000 years parallel the physical 40 years. 7. While the Israelites were in the wilderness, God fed them and took care of all their needs. They were nourished on physical manna. 7. While the church is in the wilderness of this world, God will feed his people and care for their spiritual needs. The church is nourished on spiritual manna - God's Word. 8. Before the children of Israel could enter their Promised Land, they had to cross the Jordan River After the children of Israel crossed the Jordan River, they dwelt in the land that God had promised them. It was a place of great value that flowed with milk and honey. It met all their physical needs. 9. When Christ comes to earth again, he will take the church to the spiritual Promised Land of heaven. It will be a place of rest for all those who have followed God and will be a place of spiritual bliss. Before the church can enter its spiritual Promised Land of heaven, Christ must come to earth the second time.

The above comparisons between the physical kingdom of Israel and the spiritual kingdom of the church are very important in interpreting Revelation. This type of symbolism is used extensively in the book. The major concept that must be understood is that Revelation is dealing mainly with the spiritual nature of the church. Once we understand how the physical kingdom of Israel parallels the spiritual kingdom of the church, we can then use those parallels to understand the messages of Revelation. Heb. 10:1 states, "For the law having a shadow of good things to come." The law of Moses was a likeness of a better law to come which was the gospel. Many things in the Old Testament were symbolic of greater things to come in the Christian age. Study each of the following Old Testament symbols and identify the New Testament spiritual likeness of each. 7 Old Testament Symbol Reference 1. Israel Gal. 6:16 2. Jerusalem Heb. 12:22 3. 8 Numerology In Revelation numbers are also used as symbols. We must understand that in many cases the numbers really carry little or no numerical value. They are used to describe. They give information about the symbols being used rather than giving a definite count of something. In some cases we still use numbers in our own language in this manner. For example, the number 13 is often associated with bad luck. Many high rise buildings have no 13th floor for this very reason. This is the way numbers are used in Revelation. The Jewish people had many such uses of numbers in their language. Many of these uses came directly from the ways they are used in the scriptures because the Jews were so familiar with the scriptures and the history of their nation as outlined in those scriptures. Please study the following information given on numbers. Discuss the symbolic meaning of each of the numbers and think of other examples of how these numbers are used throughout the scriptures that would help understand its symbolic meaning. 9 Symbolic Description of Jesus Christ (1:1-1-20) This first chapter of Revelation gives Christians a marvelous symbolic description of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. By studying each of these symbols, we gain a much better understanding of the characteristics of Jesus. We are shown how important the teachings of Jesus are to the world today. Several symbols are used to describe the purity and holiness of Jesus. Others are used to describe the importance of the teachings of our Lord. The closeness of the relationship the church enjoys with our Lord is also explained as we see Jesus standing in the midst of the seven candlesticks. There are symbols used and defined in this chapter which are important throughout the book. This makes chapter one an excellent place to begin the study of the text. The symbols are fairly easy, and we get a good understanding of how symbolic language is used to describe people and events. As you study the picture, keep in mind that the seven golden candlesticks symbolize the church and the other symbols describe Jesus. As was studied in the first lesson, seven is the number of divine completeness. Therefore, even though these seven churches are named in chapters 2 and 3, they are symbolic of the complete church throughout the Christian age. The characteristics and relationships described in this chapter apply to us as Christians today just as they did to Christians of the first century. This vision shows Jesus standing in the midst of the seven candlesticks. We must always be thankful that, no matter where the church is located, Jesus is in our midst. Text Questions 1. 12 Notes and Comments 8

Throne of God (Chapters 4 and 5) One very important concept must be understood before this lesson is studied. This vision in chapter 4 is a description of the Throne of God as it exists at this present time. It is the throne that Christians are subject to today. The main point of the vision in chapter 4 is to show that God is ruling on His throne today and that Christians are the gathered around His throne. The vision begins in chapter 4 by giving us a marvelous description of the glorious throne of God. In chapter 5, Christ is pictured as taking his place on the throne beside God. This took place at the ascension of our Lord (Heb. 10:12). The vision explains that Jesus was the only being who could take the book sealed with seven seals out of God's hand and open the seals. He was able to do this because he was crucified for our sins. Since Jesus has ascended to heaven and is seated on the right hand of God, we understand that this magnificent and most powerful throne is in existence today and we are subjects to it. 1 Cor. 6:16 states, for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. The church is the spiritual temple of God and God dwells in that temple. Therefore, although the literal throne of God is located in heaven, the spiritual throne of God is located in the church today. We do not have to wait until eternity to stand before this throne. See Rev. 7: Those who are in the spiritual kingdom of God, the church, are gathered around this throne. The throne scene in chapters 4 and 5 is a description of a spiritual throne, which Christians who dwell in God s spiritual kingdom, are subject to today. Text Questions 1. Describe the throne of God that we serve today. (4:3) 2. There was a round about the throne, in sight like unto an. (4:3) 3. What color is an emerald? (C-pg. 76) 4. What does the green color symbolize? (4:3) (9:4) 5. What was the meaning of the rainbow that God placed in the heavens after the great flood? (Gen. 9:13) (C-pg. 76) 9

6. What is the symbolic meaning of the green rainbow around the throne of God? (4:3) 7. Seated around the throne of God are elders. (4:4) 8. The 24 elders were dressed in raiment. (4:4) 9. What does the white color symbolize? (19:8) (C-pg ) 10. The 24 elders had of gold on their heads. (4:4) 11. What do crowns represent? (4:4) 12. What does the number 24 symbolize? (C-pg ) 13. Who do these 24 elders represent? (4:4) (C-pg ) 14. Before the throne there was a like unto crystal. (4:6) 15. What does this sea of glass represent? (4:6) 16. There were seven of fire burning before the throne. (4:5) 17. What do these seven lamps represent? (4:5) 18. What does a lamp or light symbolize throughout the scriptures? (4:5) 19. Describe the 4 living creatures (beasts KJV) which are before the throne. (4:6-8) 20. What do they most likely represent? (4:8) (C-pg ) 21. What is the symbolic meaning of the 24 elders casting their crowns before the throne of God? (4:10) 10

Book Sealed with Seven Seals (5:1-5:14) 1. What is the symbolic meaning of the number seven? (C-pg. 8) 2. How did kings seal documents during Old Testament times? (C-pg. 99) 3. What was the purpose of the king s seal on a document? (Esther 3:12) 4. What would be the meaning of a book being sealed by the most powerful king of all - God? (C-pg. 99) 5. The main point in this vision is to show who was worthy to take the book out of God's hand and open the seals. was the one found worthy? (5:5) 6. In order to be made worthy to open the seals of the book, Jesus had been. (5:9) 7. Because Jesus did what was necessary to open the seals of the book, we were made and, and we shall reign on the. (5:10) 8. When Jesus took the book out of the hand of God, they sang a song. (5:8) 9. How does the singing of a new song parallel the singing of a song by the Israelites when they crossed the Red Sea? (Exodus 15:1-19) 10. What is this new song? (Isa. 26:1-2) 11

11. Who are the only ones who can sing this new song of salvation? (5:9) (14:3) 12. When we wash our robes and make them white in the blood of the lamb, we before the and serve him day and night in his temple (church). (7:16) We can then sing the new song of salvation. 13. How do we stand before the Throne of God today? (Matt. 18:20) 14. Discuss how this vision is a picture of the Throne of God that Christians serve today. One very important concept in this chapter that should be noted for later study is that when we are made kings and priests we reign on the earth (5:10). There are many different interpretations in the Christendom world today concerning when we will reign on this earth. Our reign on this earth is during this present Christian age as we serve our Lord in his church. Christ is seated on his throne and we are presently reigning with him as kings and priests. See Rev. 1:6 and 3:21. In chapter 20:4, we are told that we reign with Christ for 1000 years. This 1000-year period of time is symbolic of this present Christian dispensation. When these relationships in the book of Revelation are understood, the meanings of these symbols become very understandable. Read the related passages mentioned above and comment on the consistency of these symbols. 12

Holy City - The Church (Chapters 21-22) In order to properly interpret Revelation, it is extremely important that we first understand the subject of the book. Revelation deals with the spiritual city of God, the church. The prophets of the Old Testament used symbolic language to prophesy the coming of the church, and God uses many of those same symbols in Revelation to describe the church as it exists in the world today. Also, there are many patterns to be studied that will help in understanding the true nature of the church. For example, there are at least four major symbols in the Old Testament that are physical types or patterns of the church that Jesus built. They are: (1) Israel, (2) Tabernacle, (3) Temple, and (4) Jerusalem. All of these symbolically represent the church. It should be very helpful at this time to read the section in the commentary on pages entitled, "The Holy Jerusalem." Introduction Questions 1. In 21:9, the angel told John he would be shown the, the Lamb s Wife. 2. What is the bride, the Lamb's wife? (Rom. 7:4) 3. What other name is used in 21:10, to describe the bride, the Lamb's Wife? 4. In what city did the Jews worship in Old Testament times? 5. Discuss the parallel between the physical city of Jerusalem during the Mosaic dispensation and the spiritual city of Jerusalem in the Christian dispensation? (C-pg. 390) 6. Read Heb. 12:22-23 and discuss the meanings of each of the symbols used to describe the church. A. Mount Zion B. City of the living God C. Heavenly Jerusalem D. Church of the Firstborn 13

In light of these passages, it is evident that the beautiful description of the glorious city in chapters 21 and 22 is a description of the spiritual kingdom of God, the church. As these chapters are studied, keep in mind that the children of Israel were looking for a better kingdom (Acts 1:6). They expected Christ to establish an earthly kingdom, but instead, he established a great spiritual kingdom, the church. Study the following drawing and discuss how this is a symbolic description of the church, the spiritual city of God. It should be noted that mount Zion is included in this drawing because it is also used as a symbolic description of the church and is a very important concept to understand as we progress through this study. The Bride of Christ The Lamb s Wife 14

Light of the City 1. is the light of the world? (Jno. 8:12) 2. What must we do in order to be in that spiritual light? (Jno. 8:12) (Also see I Jno. 1:5-10) 3. Discuss the symbolic meanings of light and darkness. Light: Darkness: 4. The shall walk in the light of this city? (21:24) 5. Discuss why those outside the church are in spiritual darkness. 6. Why does this spiritual city have no need of the sun or moon? (21:23) 7. Why is there no night in this city? (21:25) Wall of the City In ancient times walls were built around cities for protection from their enemies. The gates of the city could be closed at night or during an attack. People felt secure because of these great walls. Only those who were supposed to be in the city were allowed inside the wall. As Christians of the first century read this beautiful description of the great spiritual city, they were very familiar with the purpose of the wall. The symbolic wall of this great spiritual city has the same meaning in spiritual terms to Christians today as the physical walls did to the people in those times. It provides a place of refuge from the sins of the world. See Isa. 4:2-6. A prophecy is made concerning this spiritual city in Isa. 26:1. It states, In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks. Those inside the church have passed through this great spiritual wall of salvation by obeying the gospel. This wall separates the church from the spiritual darkness of the world. Isa. 26:2 states, Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in. Those who obey the gospel are made righteous by the blood of Christ and pass through the gates into this great spiritual city. 1. Since the number 12 represents God's organized religion, what is the significance of this city having 12 gates in the wall? (21:12) 2. This great city has foundations? (21:14) 15

3. Why are the names of the 12 apostles written in the foundations of the wall? (21:14) See Eph. 2: What is the foundation of the church? (21:14) (Eph. 2:19-20) 5. Why are the gates of this city never closed? (21:25) 6. Why are the gates described as gates of pearl? (21:21) (Matt. 13:45-46) Contents of the City 1. What do each of the following symbols represent? (21:21) A. Street of Gold - (21:21) (See Isa. 35:8) B. Water of life (22:1) (Jer. 2:13) C. Tree of Life - (22:2) (Gen. 2:9) D. Gates of Pearl - (21:21) (Matt. 13:45-46) - Topics for Discussion 1. Why can nothing that defileth, worketh abomination, or maketh a lie enter into this spiritual city of God? (21:27) 2. Where can the water of life be found, and how do we drink of it? (22:1) 3. How do we enter through the gates into the city were we may eat of the tree of life? (22:14) 4. Who are those outside this spiritual city? (22:15) 5. How do the kings of the world bring their glory and honor into the city? (21:24) (Isa. 60:11) 6. What will happen to those who add to or take from the words of this prophecy? (22:19) 7. Why is this city garnished with all manner of precious stones and made of pure gold? (21:19-21) 8. How does this city compare with the Garden of Eden? (C-pg. 35) 16

Souls in Bondage - Great Tribulation (7:9-17) In this lesson we begin the study of the great parallel between the Israelite nation in the time of Moses and the church today. Please refer back to the first lesson, Parallel Symbolism, for a review of the overall big picture. Several of the visions of Revelation can be studied and understood by using this parallel symbolism. The lessons in this workbook will follow the order of events as illustrated in the following pictures. Our understanding of Revelation Physical Slavery should build as we progress through this study and the meanings of these symbols will become more obvious and easier to understand. When this study is finished, it is hoped that a very consistent and understandable study of Revelation will have been achieved. In this lesson we will concentrate on the time the Israelite Nation was in bondage in Egypt. The parallel between that period of time and the first coming of Christ will be studied and applications will be made to sections in Revelation, which deal with that symbolism. Study the two pictures on the following page, especially the parallels concerning Egyptian bondage and the crossing of the Red Sea. The children of Israel were in great physical tribulation during the time of Moses. This parallels the spiritual situation of all mankind before Christ came to earth the first time. The Law of Moses was not capable of taking away the sins of the people. Heb. 10:3-4 states, "But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins." Mankind needed a Savior to remove their sins. In the likeness of Moses, Christ came to this world to lead man out of the spiritual tribulation of sin. In Jno. 8:32-34, Jesus told the Jews that the truth would make them free. They replied that they had never been in bondage to any man, and then asked what he meant that they should be made free. Jesus answered them and said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin." Everyone who had lived on the earth had sinned, therefore everyone was in the bondage of sin. Jesus gave his blood in order that man might be made Spiritual Slavery free from the bondage of sin. 17

Discussion 1. Discuss the physical situation of the children of Israel while in Egyptian bondage. 2. Discuss how mankind was in great spiritual bondage today before Christ came to earth. (Jno. 8:3234). 3. Discuss how sin is great spiritual tribulation. 4. Discuss how Moses was a likeness of Christ as he led the Israelites out of physical bondage. (Acts 3:22) 5. Discuss how those outside the church today are in great spiritual tribulation. Text Questions 1. What do people do in order to come out of great spiritual tribulation? (7:14) 2. How do we wash our robes and make them white in the blood of the lamb? (7:14) 3. Those who come out of great tribulation by washing their robes in the blood of the lamb stand before the throne of God and worship him in his. 4. Who are those who stand before the throne of God today? (7:15) 5. Since the temple is symbolic of the church, where are those located that stand before the throne of God today? 6. What did the people of Jerusalem do when Christ rode into the city on the donkey? (Jno. 12:13) 7. What do palm leaves symbolize? (7:9) 8. Why is the great multitude pictured as standing before the throne of God with palm leaves in their hands? (7:9) 19

9. Those who stand before the throne of God will be and led unto living fountains of. (7:17) 10. Discuss how the fountain of living waters is the same as the water of life pictured in the church in 22: What is the great tribulation? The 144,000 (7:1-8) A great misunderstanding concerning the number 144,000 exists in the religious world today. We must remember that numbers are used symbolically in Revelation. They represent or describe something rather than giving a definite count. This number is derived from the use of two other symbolic numbers, 12 and The number twelve is associated with the two laws that God gave mankind. One thousand represents ultimate completeness. If you take the multitudes of people who lived under these two laws and multiply 12 X 12, the product is 144. Multiply 144 times the complete number 1000 and the result is 144,000. They symbolic number, 144,000, simply represents all those people who have obeyed the laws of God. Today the 144,000 represent Christians because we now live under the law of Christ. There are two sections in Revelation that deal with the symbolic number 144,000. They are chapters 7:1-8 and 14:1-5. We will present a basic study of the number at this time, with a more thorough discussion to follow in lesson VII. In order to fully understand how this number is being used, both chapters must be studied. As this section is studied, keep in mind that the great multitude dressed in white robes that came out of great tribulation is another way of describing the 144,000. Questions 1. The 4 angels were not allowed to hurt the earth, sea, nor trees until the servants of God were. (7:3) 2. What does it mean for the servants of God to be sealed in their foreheads? 25 Crossing the Red Sea (Chapters 2, 3, 20) During the time of Egyptian bondage, the Israelites were looking for a way of escape. They needed a leader and God sent them Moses. God appeared to Moses in the burning bush and told him to go unto Pharaoh so that he might deliver the children of Israel out of bondage. Passages in the New Testament state that Moses was a likeness of Christ. See Acts 3:22. Moses led the people out of physical bondage in the likeness to Christ leading mankind out of spiritual bondage. In order for the Israelites to escape physical tribulation, they had to cross the Red Sea. They were able to accomplish this with the help of God. The crossing of the Red Sea was symbolic of a much greater spiritual event to take place when Christ came to earth. It symbolized mankind's escape from great spiritual bondage by the blood of Christ. It is important to note that the color red is used many times to symbolize bloodshed. Therefore, the crossing of the Red Sea is symbolic of the crossing of the blood of Christ. We cross this Red Sea of the blood of Christ by our obedience to his gospel through baptism. See 1Cor. 10:1-2. This is a spiritual resurrection from the grave of sin. Crossing Spiritual Red Sea Crossing Physical Red Sea There are two major symbols used in Revelation to illustrate this resurrection from sin. They are the "First Resurrection" in chapter 20 and "Overcoming" in chapters 2 and 3. As this lesson is studied, it is important to remember and compare the physical events surrounding the crossing of the Red Sea with events surrounding the spiritual crossing of the Red Sea of the blood of Christ. Study the drawings on the following page and notice the parallels between the deliverance of the children of Israel out of physical bondage by crossing the Red Sea and the deliverance of mankind out of spiritual bondage by the crossing of the Red Sea of the blood of Christ. 21

First Resurrection (Chapter 20) Before entering into this study, it is extremely important to understand exactly what the first resurrection is. Jesus was the first resurrection. Col 1:18 states, And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. The question then becomes: How do we have a part in that first resurrection? Eph. 2:1-7 should be studied thoroughly. It definitely shows us that our first resurrection is a spiritual resurrection from the grave of sin. Eph. 2:5 states, "Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ." To be quickened is to be made alive or resurrected. Rom. 6:3-6 states, "Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up form the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." We are resurrected from the grave of sin to walk a new life in Christ Jesus. This is our first resurrection. Text Questions 1. What is the second death? (20:14) 2. Explain why the second death has no power over those who have a part in the first resurrection. (20:6) 3. Those people who have a part in the first resurrection shall be and of God and of Christ. (20:6) 4. Who are the priests of God? (20:6) (1:6) (5:10) 5. How do we become priests of God? (20:6) 1000 Years As was studied in the first lesson, the number 1000 represents completeness. Therefore the 1000 years is symbolic of a complete period of time. Verse 6 states that those who have "part in the first resurrection" will live and reign with Christ during the 1000 years. Since the first resurrection is our resurrection from the spiritual grave of sin, then the 1000 years must represent that period of time in which people can be made alive. That is the Christian dispensation. This does not mean that everyone will live for a literal 1000 years. It means that Christians are made alive and reign spiritually during the 1000 years. This period of time began on the day of Pentecost and will end with Christ s Second Coming. It is parallel to the 40 years of wilderness wanderings by the Israelites. Please refer back to the drawings on the previous page. 23

Overcoming 1. What is the Biblical definition of "overcoming"? (I Jno. 5:3-5) 2. Chapter 20:6 says the second death will have no power over those who have a part in the first resurrection and 2:11 says that those who overcome shall not be hurt of the second death; therefore, how does the "first resurrection" compare with "overcoming?" 3. Those who overcome will receive the following blessings: A. Eat of the tree of. (2:7) B. Shall not be hurt of the. (2:11) C. Eat of hidden. (2:17) D. Have over nations. (2:26) E. 31 144,000 Gathered at Mount Zion (Chapter 14) After the Israelites escaped Egyptian bondage by crossing the Red Sea, Moses led them into the wilderness to mount Sinai. On this mountain God gave Israel the Ten Commandments. This is symbolic of Christ leading mankind out of spiritual bondage and giving his law on spiritual mount Zion. Moses was a likeness of Christ and mount Sinai is a physical likeness of spiritual mount Zion. Many Old Testament prophecies spoke of events to take place on mount Zion. For example, Zech. 8:1 states, "Thus saith the Lord; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the Lord of hosts the holy mountain." This is a reference to the coming of God's spiritual kingdom - the church. In Micah 4:1, the church is symbolically described as the "mountain" of the house of the Lord. It was to come in the "last days." In I Jno. 2:18, this Christian dispensation is referred to as the "last days." Therefore the "mountain of the house of the Lord" was to come during this present dispensation. It came as spiritual mount Zion and took the place of physical mount Sinai. Examine the drawing once again and notice that it illustrates a perfect parallel between the physical events of Israel and the spiritual events in the church. The visions about to be studied use the great parallel between mount Sinai and mount Zion. A prophecy is made in Micah 4:7 which states that "the Lord shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth, even for ever." The throne of God is on mount Zion. The literal throne of God may be in the heavenly realm, but spiritually the throne of God is located in the church. Matt. 18:20 says, "Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." The church is the spiritual kingdom of God, and the Lord is sitting on his throne as he rules that kingdom. The giving of the Law of Moses on physical mount Sinai is symbolic of Christ giving the gospel on spiritual mount Zion. As this lesson is studied, keep in mind the description of the throne of God as is given in Revelation chapters 4 and 5. Please refer back to the earlier lesson in this workbook titled, Throne of God. One other very important concept in this study is the parallel between the children of Israel and the church. The children of Israel lived in a literal, physical kingdom upon this earth. They had their own government and kings. The church today is a spiritual likeness of that physical kingdom. We have a spiritual law and government, and our King is Christ. Just as a note: Some may question the two spellings of the mountain. It is simply a difference in spelling between the Hebrew and Greek translations. The Hebrew is "Zion" and the Greek is "Sion. Study the drawing below of the parallel comparison of Israel and the church.

Church in the Wilderness (Chapter 12) After the Israelites received the Ten Commandments on mount Sinai, they began their journey to the Promised Land. Because of their unbelief, they were refused entrance into that land and began a period of forty years of wilderness wanderings. This forty-year period of wandering in the wilderness is a likeness to the situation of the church in the world today. As one becomes a member of the Lord's church by obeying the gospel, he leaves the bondage of sin by the blood of Christ. He then enters into the spiritual kingdom of God where he dwells spiritually in this present world awaiting his Promised Land of heaven. Many of the events during the period of forty years of wanderings were symbolic types of events taking place today in the spiritual kingdom of God. The Israelites were nourished on literal manna from heaven during this time. That literal manna was a likeness of the spiritual manna to come, which was Jesus and his Word. See Jno. 6: They struggled with their trust in God. Many died because of unbelief. Today the church struggles against a world of sin. When people today leave the church and turn back to a world of sin, they are doing the same thing as the Israelites who turned from God in the wilderness. Many died in the wilderness because they forsook God for idols. Those who forsake God today for the pleasures of sin will be punished eternally. This forty years of wilderness wanderings corresponds to the symbolic 1000 years of chapter 20, which was discussed in the lesson titled Souls in Bondage Great Tribulation. The church will exist in this world for a complete period of time described as a symbolic 1000 years. In chapter 12, this symbolic period of time is described as 1260 days, which is 3½ years. The number 3½ is used in Revelation to describe a period of waiting and longing. The church is waiting for the Second Coming of Jesus. The 1260 days is simply another way of describing the 1000 years. Study the drawings on the following page and make comparisons concerning the time the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness to the time the church wanders in the wilderness of this world. 33

March to the Promised Land (Chapter 12) 1. Discuss ways in which the 40 years of wilderness wanderings of the children of Israel were symbolically parallel to the wandering of the church in the world today. (C-pg. 198) 2. Who was the man child caught up to the throne of God to rule the nations with a rod of iron? (12:5) 3. When did this take place? (12:5) 4. Who travailed in birth to deliver this man child? (12:2) 5. Who does this glorious woman clothed with the sun represent? (12:1) 6. The great red dragon that was waiting to devour the Son of God represents the. (12:3-4, 9) 7. Since the devil is waiting to devour the Son of God, this vision begins in what period of time? A. Christian age B. Mosaic age 8. What did the woman do after the child was caught up to the throne of God? (12:6,14) An important parallel to understand at this time is that the children of Israel were the chosen people of God under the Law of Moses and Christians are the chosen people of God under the Law of Christ. The Law of Moses was given only to the nation of Israel, but the Law of Christ is given to all nations. When Christ came to earth the first time, he gave a much better law (Heb. 8:13). The glorious woman of Revelation chapter 12 at first represented the children of Israel, but after the first coming of Christ, she represents the church of our Lord. 9. After the ascension of Christ to the throne of God, whom does the glorious woman represent? 10. What did this glorious woman do after the ascension of Christ? (12:7,14) 11. What does this wilderness represent? (12:6) 12. This place for the church was prepared by. (12:6) 13. During the time the church is in the wilderness, God will her. (12:6) 14. How did God nourish the Israelites in the wilderness? (Exod. 16:14-15) 35

15. What is the spiritual parallel of the manna that the children of Israel received from God? (Jno. 6:31-35) 16. How does God nourish his people today? 17. Since we know that God will nourish his people with spiritual manna until Christ comes again, then what period of time must the 1260 days represent? (12:6) (C-pg ) War in Heaven (12:7-17) As we study this section, it is important to understand that the war in heaven is a symbolic description of how Christ defeated Satan when he died on the cross for the sins of man. Christ overcame Satan when he died on the cross, and we overcome sin when we obey the gospel. 1 John 5:5 says, Who is he tht overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? Speaking of false spirits, 1 John 4:4 states, Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. As people obey the gospel, they cross the Red Sea of the blood of Christ. See earlier lesson, Crossing the Red Sea. As they do this, they overcome this world of sin. This means that our sins have been forgiven. Christ has won the war against Satan by his death on the cross, and we can win the war against sin in our lives by obeying the gospel of Christ. Notice how this is in perfect agreement with the lesson on Overcoming. Chapter 12 should be divided into two sections: (1) verses 1 6, and (2) verses Both of these sections cover the same period of time the entire gospel age. In the first section, Christ is pictured as coming to the earth and Satan is waiting to destroy him. He then ascends to the throne of God and the church flees into the wilderness where she is nourished by God. In the second section, Christ is pictured as defeating Satan by his death on the cross. The church then flees into the wilderness where she is persecuted by Satan but also nourished by God. Both of these visions cover the gospel age, but each gives us a look at different events, which take place during that period of time. The key verse in understanding this section is 12:10. It confirms the time period in which this war was won. 1. List the four things that came when Michael defeated Satan in this war. Give the meaning of each. (12:10) EVENTS MEANING

2. When did each of these events transpire? (12:10) 3. If each of these things came with the first coming of Christ, then when was Satan cast out of heaven? (12:7) 4. Discuss how this war was a continual war beginning with the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and lasting until Christ gave his blood to save us from our sins. 5. What does it mean that Satan deceived the whole world? (12:9) 6. Since Satan was cast out of heaven and down to the earth, what must be the symbolic meanings of heaven and earth in this vision? (12:12) 7. Who dwells in "heavenly places"? (Eph. 1:3) 8. Who dwells in the "earth"? (12:9) 9. What does Satan do now that he is cast down into the "earth?" (12:13) 10. Who is the dragon (Satan) making war against today? (12:17) 11. How does God protect his people during this gospel age as Satan is making war against them? 37

Seven Seals (6:1-17; 81-5) As we study this series of seen seals, it will become evident that the symbolism used in this vision is different from that of the previous visions studied. One important concept to understand is how these series are structured and how they relate to each other. The structure of the Seals, Trumpets and Plagues all parallel the creation. God created all things in 6 days and rested on the seventh. The first 6 events in each of these series give us a look at events that will take place on the earth during the Christian age. The seventh then describes events that will take place in eternity. In this lesson and the lesson to follow, numbers become very important symbols. The number 7 is especially important. As was discussed in the first lesson, seven symbolically represents divine completeness. Therefore, the seven Seals, seven Trumpets, and seven last Plagues all give us a look at the entire, complete gospel age. The seventh event in each of these series takes us into eternity. At this time all things of this earth will be finished and the dead will be judged. Those who have obeyed the teachings of God will enter into eternal rest, but those who have opposed God will enter into eternal punishment. This is easily understood from chapter 10:6-7, which states that when the 7 th Trumpet sounds, time shall be no more. These three series of events are each parallel from the standpoint of covering the same period of time the entire gospel age. The series of seven seals can be divided into two distinct divisions. The first section is the four horsemen, which explains events that happen on this earth dealing with the physical lives of men. The last three seals explain how God will deal with those who have opposed him on this earth and have persecuted Christians. The seals describe events that are to take place on the earth during the Christian age and affect the physical lives of men. They explain physical events that Christians must face and endure in this life to remain faithful to God. The timeline below should help in understanding the time period covered by the Seals, Trumpets and Plagues. 39

Plagues Seals Before studying the three series of Seals, Trumpets and Plagues, it is very important to understand how they are structured and how they relate to each other. It is also important to understand the type of symbolism being used. These three series describe events that take place during this Christian dispensation. They parallel the way God created the earth. He created all things in six days and rested on the seventh. These first six events in each series describe events which take place on the earth with the sixth taking us to the end of time. Notice how in each of these series, the sixth event uses language which describe the end of time or the second coming of Christ. The seventh event then describes Judgment. Each of these series close by using words such as voices, lightnings, thunderings and earthquake. These terms are used in scripture to announce great events or the presence of God. Study the parallels shown on these pages and notice how they are identical in structure. Once this structure is understood, information given in one of the series can be used to understand the others. For more information on these three series, see the commentary on pages 97, 136, and :2 White Horse Rider carried a bow Went forth conquering (Spiritual War) 2. 6:3-4 Red Horse Carried a great sword (War Bloodshed) 3. 6:5-6 Black Horse Balances in his hand (Famine Hardships) 4. 6:8 Pale Horse Had power over ¼ part of the earth (Physical Death) 5. 6:9-11 Souls under altar asked, how long before God will avenge their blood 6. 6:12-17 All things destroyed Day of wrath is come Who shall be able to stand? Explain how the question asked by those under the altar in the fifth seal is answered by the events of the seventh seal. (C-pg. 135) 44

Seven Trumpets (8:2; 8:7-9:21) The second series of seven events is the seven trumpets. It should be noted that the seven trumpets follow the same sequence as the seven seals. The difference is that for the most part the seven trumpets deal mainly with the spiritual lives of mankind. This section is of tremendous importance to the spiritual lives of Christians. The 7 Seals explained that there would be many threats upon the physical lives of Christ, which we would have to endure. The 7 Trumpets warn of great problems on the earth that affect the spiritual lives of men. The symbols that separate the meanings of the seals and the trumpets are the fractions 1/4 and 1/3. The 7 Seals deal with the 1/4th (physical) part of man, but the series of 7 Trumpets deals with the 1\3rd (spiritual) part of man. The seven trumpets follow the same 4-3 sequence as was evident in the series of seven seals. The first four Trumpets explain events on this earth that will affect the spiritual lives of men. The last three Trumpets show how God will deal with those who have opposed his spiritual teachings and have caused men to lose their spiritual lives. The seventh Trumpet explains how God will deal with those people in eternity who have opposed his spiritual law. Definition of a Trumpet 1. Read Eze. 33:3-5 and explain the meaning of the sounding of a trumpet. 2. Think of some other occasions in the Bible when the sounding of a trumpet is used as a warning, or to announce the coming of a great event. 3. Discuss the meaning of the sounding of a trumpet in God's word to Christians today. First 4 Trumpets 1. What events take place upon the sounding of the first trumpet? (8:7) 2. Contrast the symbolic difference in trees and green grass as they describe the spiritual strength of people. (8:7) 5. What is the symbolic meaning of the third part of man? (C-pg. 137) 6. Discuss the symbolic meanings of hail, fire, and blood as they relate to trials in the lives of Christians today. (8:7) 7. Discuss how this trumpet warns that the trials of life may cause the spiritually weak as well as the spiritually strong to lose their spiritual lives. (8:7) 8. What events take place as the second trumpet is sounded? (8:8) 9. What is the symbolic meaning of a mountain? (8:8) (Jer. 51:24-25) 10. What is the symbolic meaning of the sea. Read and discuss the passage in Exodus 15:22-25 concerning the bitter waters of Mirah. Make comparisons regarding the parallel between the physical event at Mirah and the spiritual warning of the third trumpet. 19. These bitter waters represent the many false teachings in the world today. Think of some ways the spiritual waters of the world today are made bitter. 20. What events took place with the sounding of the fourth trumpet? (8:12) 21. Since this passage deals with the 1/3rd part of light, what type of light is discussed? (8:12) A. Physical B. Spiritual 22. What is the spiritual light of the world? (John 8:12) 23. What would it mean for the spiritual light of the world to be darkened? (8:12) 24. What would it mean for no spiritual lights to shine either day or night? (8:12) 25. Discuss the warning being given by the sounding of the fourth trumpet. Three Woes 1. 53 15. What 3 elements are used to kill the third part of men? (9:17-18) What do the fire, smoke and brimstone represent? (9:17) 17. The key to this passage is understanding who are affected by these locust and why they are affected. In verse 20, we are told that they are worshipping many things other than the true God. Read 1Thes. 2:11-12, and discuss how God will deal with those who refuse to accept the gospel. 18. Discuss how many people in the world today are very spiritual in their thoughts and deeds, yet they never do the things God says is necessary for salvation. 19. What will happen to Christians at the conclusion of the sounding of the sixth trumpet? (11:12) 20. What things will be finished when the seventh angel begins to sound his trumpet? (10:6-7) 21. What is the "mystery of God"? (10:7) (Col. 1:27-28) 22. With the above information in mind, what period of time is the seventh trumpet describing? (10:7) 23. 55 Seven Last Plagues (15:1-16:21) There is much Old Testament symbolism involved in the study of the Seven Last Plagues. As we think back to the time of the deliverance of the children of Israel from Egyptian bondage, we are reminded of the ten plagues sent against Egypt. To properly understand these last plagues, we must remember the great parallels between the physical events of the Old Testament and the spiritual events of the New Testament. The plagues sent against Egypt were literal, physical happenings. The seven last plagues are spiritual plagues sent against a world in sin. Just as the ten plagues were sent against Egypt in order to cause Pharaoh to let the people go, the Seven Last Plagues are spiritual plagues sent against a world in sin to encourage them to become a part of God's spiritual kingdom. They are events that will be directed against those who oppose God. Having these plagues directed against them should be an incentive to turn to the ways of God. It should also be an incentive to Christians to remain faithful. These plagues are called the "last" plagues because they took place in the "last" times. Since the "last times" refer to the Christian dispensation, these Seven Last Plagues are taking place in the world today. They take place continually throughout the Christian dispensation and give us a glimpse of what things will be like at the Second Coming of Christ. The seventh plague also describes the spiritual destruction that those who have opposed God will suffer during eternity. Please refer back to the introduction of the lesson entitled Seven Seals" and review the parallel structure of the Seals, Trumpets and Plagues. 51

History of the Church (Chapter 11) This section of Revelation should be of great interest to Christians today. It gives an account of the major events concerning the church from its establishment to eternity. Two thousand years have passed since the establishment of the church. This enables us to look back at history and readily see that many of the events described in this chapter have already taken place. Others are yet to be fulfilled. Since many have been fulfilled, we should strongly believe that the events described, which are yet in the future, will most surely come to pass. Two Witnesses As we begin the study of the history of the church, it is very important to understand the meaning of the "two witnesses." In order to properly interpret the symbolic meaning of the two witnesses, we must first look at the other names by which they are called. They are also called: (1) Two olive trees; (2) two candlesticks; and (3) two prophets. Each of these symbolic terms refers to Christians or the church in some way. Consider the following passages concerning these symbols. Olive tree - Rom. 11: In this passage the old nation of Israel is compared to the natural olive tree and the Gentile nations which have become Christians are compared to a wild olive tree. The wild olive tree has been grafted into the natural olive tree. So, the olive tree is a symbol used to represent the people of God. Candlesticks - Rev. 1:20 - The candlestick is definitely used as a symbol of the church because it is plainly stated that the seven candlesticks represent the seven churches. Also, in Rev. 1:13, Jesus is pictured as standing in the midst of the seven candlesticks. This shows that he is standing in the midst of the church today. The candlestick is a symbol used to describe the church. Two Prophets - Rev. 10:11 - In this passage, the apostle John is told that he must once again prophesy before many peoples and nations. Obviously, John prophesied by the writings in the book of Revelation. We certainly do not have the ability to prophesy today, but we do proclaim the word of God and are capable of knowing what the end will be for those who do not obey the word. In that sense we are the prophets of God today. Two Witnesses - Today in the church we are very apprehensive of the word "witness." We are obviously not eyewitnesses to the crucifixion or the life of Christ, but we are witnesses from the standpoint of the world seeing Christ in us. The only way the world may learn and know about Jesus is by reading the word or hearing it proclaimed by Christians. Matt. 24:14 says, And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations. We must call things by Bible names, but we must also 55

understand that the two witnesses in this passage are describing ways that the world may hear and know about Christ. It now becomes important to understand why the number two is associated with the witnesses, olive trees, candlesticks, and prophets. As was studied in the first lesson, the number two carries with it the symbolic meaning of strength. Christ sent his disciples out in pairs. They gained strength from each other. Since the number two is associated with the witnesses, candlesticks, olive trees and prophets, we know that their strength is being described. Sometimes we forget the power we have as Christians. We have the greatest power of all in our possession and that is the Word of God. Rom 1:16 says that the gospel is the power of God unto salvation. Text Questions 1. What is the symbolic meaning of the temple of God? (1 Cor. 3:16-17) 2. Compare the parallel between the Israelite's worship in the temple and the Christian s worship in the church. 3. What does it mean to measure the temple of God? (11:1) 4. The measurements of the temple are not given in this passage, but they can be found in Revelation. Where can those measurements be found? (11:1) (See lesson titled Holy City The Church. ) 5. What is the symbolic meaning of the court of the temple? (11:2) 6. The two witnesses were to for a thousand two hundred and threescore days. (11:3) 7. What will happen to those who attempt to hurt the two witnesses? (11:5) 8. What does this show about God's protection for his church? (11:5) 9. What power do these two witnesses possess? (11:6) 10. How do Christians smite the earth with all plagues as often as they will? (11:6) 56

As the remainder of this chapter is studied, keep in mind that we are being shown in symbolic terms the chronological history of the church of our Lord. It is highly symbolic, but once the symbols are understood, it becomes very simple. It also helps with other passages in Revelation such as chapters 17 and 18. We suggest that you read chapters 17 and 18 in connection with this chapter in order to have a better understanding of these symbols. 11. After the two witnesses finished their testimony, the that ascends out of the made war against them. (11:7) 12. Compare the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit with the beast in verse 8 of chapter Who is this beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit? (11:7) 14. Why were the people making merry over the church being dead? (11:10) 20. Discuss how the period of time known as the "dark ages" is being described by the symbolism in this vision. 57

21. How did the two prophets torment those that dwelt on the earth? (11:10) 22. After a certain period of time, the Spirit of life from God entered into them and they. (11:11) 23. What period in the history of the church is being described by their standing upon their feet? (11:1) 24. What is the next major event that will take place in the complete history of the church? (11:12) 25. What will happen in the same hour that the church is taken to heaven? (11:13) 26. Discuss the following outline of the major events concerning the history of the church as presented in this vision. (C-pg ) Symbolism Fulfillment 11:1-2 11:3-6 11:7 11:7 Temple is measured Two witnesses receive power Beast ascended out of the bottomless pit Beast made war against the 2 witnesses 11:9 Dead bodies not put in graves 11:10 Rejoiced over the death of the 2 witnesses 11:11 Spirit of life from God entered into the two witnesses Two witnesses stood upon their feet Two witnesses ascended up to heaven Great earthquake 11:11 11:12 11:13 58 Church is established Gospel is preached throughout the world Apostate church came into existence Apostate church overcame and killed the church Religious influence of the church remained among the people of the world The truth of the gospel was no longer a plague to them God breathed life into the church Restoration Church is restored Gained strength The church will be taken to heaven Those who oppose God will be punished

The Beasts (Chapters 13 and 17) There is a tremendous amount of controversy in the religious world today surrounding the meanings of these beasts. As this section is studied, we must constantly strive to let the Bible determine its own meanings. If this is done, the best authority possible for the interpretations of these visions is being used. In this lesson there are two beasts which will be studied; (1) The Beast out of the Sea (13:1-10), and (2) the Beast out of the Earth (13:11-18). The meanings of these two beasts are different; yet they are closely related because both are called "Beasts." The main features of the Beast Out of the Sea are that it has seven heads and ten horns, but the main feature of the Beast out of the Earth is that it has two horns. Actually, the beast out of the earth represents a closer look at the seventh head of the beast out of the sea. It gives us more detailed information concerning the last head of the beast out of the sea. It now becomes our responsibility to determine the Biblical meaning of a "Beast" and apply that meaning to these visions in Revelation. The Biblical meaning of a "beast" can be derived from the seventh chapter of Daniel. In this chapter, Daniel sees a vision of four beasts, which are to rise to power in this world from the time of Daniel until Christ. There can be very little doubt that these four beasts represent the governmental powers of Babylon, Assyria, Greece, and Rome. From this it can be determined that a beast represents the governmental powers which have ruled in this world. The meaning of a beast can also be derived in another manner as shown by the questions in the first section of this lesson. When the same meaning can be derived from two different lines of reasoning, then the definition must have merit. For additional information on the meaning of the beast, consult the commentary on pages
