1 Sunday School Curriculum - The story of Joseph Page 1 of 3 25 Newest Activities Top 10 Activities Search <BACK God Made Families - Part IV Teacher's Guide - this is just one possible lesson plan. Visit the Joseph Section for further ideas to supplement this. Introduction: The story of Joseph is actually quite long (nine chapters). But we'll focus on Joseph and the relationship he had with his brothers. By asking questions like: Have you ever wanted something your brother or sister had (a talent, something about the way they look, or even just a toy)? It's important that they know that we are all different with our special talents and characteristics. To be happy for our differences and not to wish we had someone else's. This is also similar message to the Cain and Abel story, and may want to refer back to that lesson, or review it with the kids before discussing this lesson. The message: Preschool thru Grade 1: God made families. He made each of us special. Grades 2 and 3: God made families so we could help find each others talents. What talent has God given you? I've split this message into two separate ones depending on the age level. For the younger children, the message continues the God as our loving creator theme from the first three lessons, this time in the form -- God made families; He made each of us special. Make sure you repeat the message many times during the lesson. For the older children, we expand on this message and ask the question "What talent has God given you?". First, what are some things that each child can do well? Second, God gave them talents to use for Him. How can they use their talent to please God? (being a good example in sports, singing in church, etc.) As they get older and try new things they will probably discover more gifts. Send the"i am Special?" Take Home Sheet home with the children to encourage parents to discuss the message during the week. It includes a poster at the bottom that the children can color and hang on their wall or refrigerator. Preview of the lesson: Some people like to do craft time first and story time second and some like to switch it around. I like the first option, myself. Always consider offering the Mini Book or Coloring Page for children who aren't interested in participating in the group activity (or if you get done the group activities very quickly and need something to fill in the spare time). Everyone has a need for "alone time" once in awhile. Also, sending home the coloring pages or mini book with the Take Home sheet provides parents with much needed help in reinforcing the lessons. You can make a nice little booklet each week with the take home sheet on top -- I promise that most parents will appreciate the effort! Description Time Allotted Supplies Welcome! Receive name tags. Have the children use crayons, markers, yarn and whatever other materials (such as wiggly eyes or buttons) you have available to personalize their name tag. Also allow them to draw something they are good at on their name tag (soccer ball, piano notes, playing with a sibling or parent, etc.). Sing the Learning our Names song 15 to 20 minutes Family Portrait tags, scissors (or adults can precut), crayons, markers, yarn, safety pins or tape. Preschool thru Grade 1: coffee
2 Sunday School Curriculum - The story of Joseph Page 2 of 3 Craft time! Preschool thru Grade 1: Make Coffee filter Joseph craft. You'll need at least a 6 to 1 adult/child ratio or better for this craft. Drying time is also needed, so go on with the rest of the lesson while you're waiting. After have some coats precut, and the kids can finish the rest. This craft takes a little extra planning, but the kids will have a great time watching the colors "magically" run together. Grade 2 and 3: Make the I'm so Smart craft. This craft has a Sunday School version near the bottom of the screen if you go to it. For a large group it might be a good idea to cut out the shapes of the body with cereal box paper, and the kids can trace and cut out the shapes on construction paper. 15 to 30 minutes depending on your adult/child ratio filter Joseph craft, printer, paper, glue, scissors, coffee filters, markers, water spritzer. Grade 2 and 3: I'm so Smart poem, printer, paper, pencil, eraser, scissors, glue, wool (or construction paper for hair color). OPTIONAL: different colored construction paper, ribbon, fabric, or felt for the coat of many colors. Bible Story Time: Preschool and Kindergarten: You can read an abbreviated version of the Garden of Eden story, but I like reading the God made families - action rhyme a number of times for this age group. Or you can sing the I am special song. Grade 1: Read the Children's Version of the Joseph story. (or read from your own store bought children's bible). Grade 2 and 3: it's tough to know when it's the right time to start readings from the Bible, but I believe this is a good age to introduce the King James (or your preferred) bible reading. This is a long reading, I had trouble deciding what to exclude, so read as little or as much at your discretion. 10 minutes The Mini Book or Coloring Page can be distributed to the children to reinforce the story. Print the page, and if there is no time during the lesson, they can take it home to color. Print the pages, staple them together in order and let the kids know when to turn the page. The handouts can be taken home to color in. Closing: Preschool thru Grade 1: depending on the time remaining, allow the children to brainstorm about some of the things God made their family members good at. (mommy is good at cooking or sewing, daddy is good at building things, sister is good at drawing, etc.) Grade 2 and 3: depending on the time remaining, allow the children to brainstorm about some of the ways they could use their talents for God. (being a good example in sports, singing in church, etc.) Explain like Joseph's brothers not to be jealous of others talents, but to be happy with the talents God gave them. All Grades: Thank-you Jesus for my... (you can hand out the words or hang them up somewhere. The verses are very repetitive, so the kids will catch on to them easily) 5 to 15 minutes Brainstorm Board (chalkboard, whiteboard, poster board,...) Words to: Thank-you Jesus for my... standard ending song Standard ending song: for example We love to learn together, together, together We love to learn together And give thanks to God.

4 4/29/2012 The Story of Joseph The Story of Joseph Page 1 of 2 This is the story about a young man named Joseph. His father's name is Jacob, and they lived in Canaan from where his grandfather was from. Joseph was seventeen (old enough to drive a car these days), and he had eleven brothers; and only had one brother younger than him. Can you imagine having eleven brothers to play with, or fight with? Because Joseph was one of the youngest sons, his father spent more time with him, and he became very special to him. So Jacob had a special robe made for Joseph. (They didn't have jackets back then, so this was a very special jacket). It was very beautiful and had every color you could imagine in it. All of Joseph's older brothers saw this and they got very jealous. The word jealous means that Joseph's brothers disliked him because they thought his father liked him more, and because he got the special coat. They got so jealous they couldn't even say a kind word to him. One day Joseph had a dream, and he went to go tell his brothers. He said, "Guess what? Last night I had a strange dream. We were tying up bunches of grain out in the field when suddenly my bunch stood up, while all of yours gathered around and bowed to me." The brothers looked at each other in disgust, but Joseph continued. "Then I had another dream that the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed down to me." "Who do you think you are?" The brothers said. "Do you think that you are better than all of us? Do you think that we would ever bow down to you?" This made the brothers dislike Joseph even more. When he told his father about his dreams he said, "Those are strange dreams." But he thought carefully about what Joseph had told him. A few days later Joseph's father asked him to check on his brothers. They were in the fields quite a distance away. So Joseph went to find them. When the brothers saw Joseph in the distance, they made a plan to kill him. But when Reuben, Joseph's oldest brother heard this he said, "Let's not kill him, just throw him in a well out here in the field." He said this because he was secretly planning to come back and rescue Joseph when the other brothers had left. So when Joseph came to them, they took off his beautiful robe and they threw him in an empty well. A little while later a group of people came by that were wanting to sell some things in Egypt. One of the brothers spoke up, "Why don't we sell him to these people, this way we never have to see him again, and we don't have to kill him." The other brothers liked this idea, so they sold him to the people who were going to Egypt. Unfortunately Reuben had been working and hadn't seen what happened. When he returned to the well he noticed that Joseph was gone. He had been sold to an important man named Potiphar, an assistant to the Pharaoh of Egypt. The rest of the brothers took Joseph's beautiful robe and dipped it in animal blood and took it back to their father. When the father saw this he cried, "Some animal has killed my son." And he cried for many days, so much that nobody could comfort him. Now Joseph had started out as a slave, but the Lord was with Joseph and He helped him do everything right. So Potiphar made him his helper, and put him in charge of everything that he owned. The problem came when Potiphar's wife lied about Joseph to her husband, so Potiphar had Joseph put into jail. The Lord was still with Joseph in jail, and the warden put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners. He never worried because the Lord was with Joseph and helped him do everything right. After Joseph had been in jail for some time a cupbearer and baker to Pharaoh had been sent there. One night each of them had a dream. They told their dreams to Joseph and he told the cupbearer that he would soon be let out of jail.
5 4/29/2012 The Story of Joseph "Please tell Pharaoh about me, and ask him to get me out of here." Joseph said. Page 2 of 2 When the cupbearer was freed he forgot about what Joseph did. So Joseph stayed in jail for two more years. Until one day the Pharaoh had a dream, and nobody could explain it to him. The cupbearer then remembered what Joseph had done for him, and Joseph was brought to Pharaoh. "Can you understand dreams?" Pharaoh asked. "I can't, but God helps me." Joseph replied. After Pharaoh had told him his dream Joseph explained, "God is warning you. There will be seven years when nothing will grow and there won't be any food for anyone." "What can I do?" Pharaoh asked. "God has shown you what to do. There will be seven years before the bad years that will be very good. So good that there will be extra food for everyone. So you should save a little bit of each years harvest, that way you will have enough to get you through the bad years." Joseph said. Pharaoh believed all that Joseph told him, and put him in charge of all the land of Egypt. People came from all countries to buy grain from Joseph, because the whole world was in need of food. Some of those people were Joseph's brothers. When his brothers came, Joseph recognized them, but they did not know who he was. (It had been over 10 years since they had seen him). The brothers all bowed to him because he was an important person. Just as he dreamed they would at the beginning. After a few meetings with his brothers he could not keep it in any longer and Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph! Is my father alive?" But his brothers couldn't answer him because they were afraid. Then Joseph said, "Come here. I am your brother, the one you sold! Do not worry, and do not be angry at yourselves for selling me, because God has put me here to save people from starving." So his father, his brothers, and their families came to live in Egypt with Joseph, and they had all the food they needed.

Materials: printer paper scissors glue something to color with (B&W version) coffee filter regular children's markers water spritzer (a mister or eyedropper or you could flick water on with a little paint brush) Directions: Print out the template of choice. Color the pieces (as appropriate) and cut them out. flatten out coffee filter on a plate Color roughly with various colors of markers - this is wonderful as even the youngest children can color this way. Wet coffee filter (using a squirty bottle or by flicking drops of water onto the filter with your hands. Hang to dry for about half an hour OR blow dry with a hand held blowdryer on low heat for about 5 minutes.

Glue the coat shape to the "paper doll" of Joseph Close the template window after printing to return to this screen. Set page margins to zero if you have trouble fitting the template on one page (FILE, PAGE SETUP or FILE, PRINTER SETUP in most browsers). Template (color) or (B&W)

This is a great project for building self esteem in a number of different themes: learning about poetry All About Me Joseph's Coat of Many Colors Sunday School theme Materials: If doing this with a group, try making some cardboard Templates for the children to trace onto construction paper and cut out on their own -- this is what we did in the photo. The shapes are large and easy to trace and cut. printer and paper OPTIONAL: thin cardboard for making Templates (old cereal boxes or the backs of paper pads work well) OPTIONAL: construction paper (if making cardboard Templates) pencil and eraser scissors glue wool or construction paper in hair colors Directions - Writing the Poem: Kaitlyn's Poem (what you might expect from a 6 year old): I'm so smart I can type on the computer. I'm so smart I can run so fast. I'm so smart I can ride my scooter. I'm so smart I can play soccer. for young children (Kindergarten and Grade 1) I have provided a template (part of template 2) with the words "I am so smart I can" with a blank beside. This is repeated 4 times so the children can fill in their four favorite talents. for older children (Grade 2 and up) you can simply provide a blank square of paper of the appropriate size and let them write out the entire poem on their own if you prefer.
20 Printable Version Page 2 of 3 ou can add in some computer use practice by allowing them to type their poem into the computer. ou can use this project to show them how to chose a font type, font size and font color and to show them how to use a spell checker. Make sure the children use pencil so they can edit their work if needed. Directions - Maing ardoard emlates: This is optional Print out the version of the Templates Glue the Templates onto thin cardboard making sure it's glued well enough that everything will stay in place while you are cutting. If you use a glue stick or a thin layer of glue you don't need to wait for anything to dry. If you use too much glue, let it dry a bit first before the next step. Cut out the template pieces (right through the cardboard) so you end up with cardboard template pieces Allow the children to trace the Templates on construction paper in their choice of colors. Directions - Maing the rat: Cut out the template pieces. Assemble the child: Cut along the line in the largest piece to make the legs. Glue the circle (head) onto the largest piece (body and legs). Glue the small rectangles (arms) onto the body. Glue the small half ovals (hands) onto the ends of the arms. Glue the larger half circles (feel) onto the bottom of the legs. Cut some strips of paper or wool to make hair for the child. Provide colors to match all the children's hair colors (if you cannot find brown construction paper, use brown paper bags). ave the children draw their face on the head Glue the I'm So Smart! poem onto the tummy. nda chool ersion: Tie in with a message similar to "This week we learned about Joseph and his coat of many colors from Genesis 3. e learned that we all have special talents and that its important not to want other's talentsbut to be happy with what God gave especially to us." hen designing the craft, you can have the children color the body different colors (to make each on an individual coat of many colors). O have the children glue multi colored pieces of construction paper, ribbon, fabric or felt to the body.
