3 contents (continued) Temple of Peace Light Dans on a Weary World Michael Burkhardt 16 Toda la tierra All Earth Is Hopeful David M Cherien 19 Truro Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates Edin T Childs 151 Wie soll ich dich empfangen O Lord, Ho Shall I Meet You Helmut Walcha 156 Composers 159 Index of Composers 160 Index of Common Titles 160 introduction The Augsurg Organ Lirary egan pulication in 1999, in the aning years of the tentieth century Its original intent as to recognize and reflect the profound reneal of the organ and its music that took place over the course of that century During the tentieth century, organ uilders revived classic principles of organ uilding, influenced in part y the influence of the Orgeleegung (organ revival movement) The resulting instruments ere characterized y a arm singing tone, clarity of pitch, and responsive key action Organ uilding returned to its place as an art of the highest calier Also during this time, the rediscovery and idespread distriution of many organ orks from composers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries led to a creative outurst among contemporary composers and organists These musicians did not, hoever, simply reproduce the past Older forms and structures ere often edded to neer melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic possiilities The Augsurg Organ Lirary reflects this reneal of the organ and its music that egan in the tentieth century and continues into the first decades of the tenty-first The first series of the Augsurg Organ Lirary, pulished from 1999 to 2016, includes eight seasonal and four thematic volumes Music especially suitale for liturgical seasons is included in volumes for Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, and Easter; the time after Pentecost is covered y volumes for Summer, Autumn, and Novemer (the end times) Additional, thematic volumes include Baptism and Holy Communion; Funeral; Marriage; and Reformation, oserving the five-hundredth anniversary of the milestone year of 1517 Since the first series as launched, hoever, a ne generation of liturgical resources has emerged, including in 2006 oth Evangelical Lutheran Worship and Lutheran Service Book, as ell as Glory to God in 201, ith others on the horizon Additional tunes from a ider variety of genres invite ne compositional treatments Composers for the tentieth century continue to create in the tenty-first, and a younger generation of composers has also emerged Augsurg Organ Lirary, Series II is eing issued in response to these developments, hile continuing the legacy of the first series Eight seasonal volumes are planned, folloing the pattern of the first series, and eginning in this volume ith the season of Advent A ide range of selections is carefully chosen for each volume Music that supports the song of the orshiping assemly is emphasized; most of the compositions are ased on hymn tunes in use across the churches Because the repertoire chosen represents various musical traditions and origins, a variety of approaches to notation and nomenclature has een retained A primary goal has een to include organ voluntaries (preludes, postludes, and so forth) that range from to to six minutes in length Some of these compositions can also serve as extended introductions to congregational hymn singing The level of difficulty ranges from medium-easy to medium-difficult All compositions are playale on a to-manual organ ith pedal The Augsurg Organ Lirary has een idely emraced y church organists as an important foundation for their performing lirary This rich compendium of organ music continues to gro ith the pulication of the Augsurg Organ Lirary, Series II
