1 TUDOR PLACE Times WINTER/SPRING 2012 W 3 Restoration of Box Knot Garden 4 Owner as Artist Armistead Peter 3rd 5 Letter from the Executive Director 6 Calendar of Events Figure 1. In contrast, the bowler hat reveals Luckett s personal style. A Personal Story From Slavery to Freedom During the Civil War hen John Luckett died on November 20, 1906, Tudor Place lost one of the home s most knowledgeable, trustworthy, and hospitable servants. (Fig. 1) Armistead Peter, Jr., his brothers, Freeland and Walter, and their sister, Agnes, all visited Luckett at Garfield Hospital the week before his death. The Peter family ordered flowers for his memorial service, and 91- year-old Britannia Wellington Kennon sent a few palm fronds from the Sago tree John himself had carefully cultivated for nearly 50 years. 1 On November 22, Armistead Peter, Jr., and his wife, Anna, paid their respects to John s widow at the Lucketts home near Capitol Hill, later joining her for a memorial service at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, the oldest independent black congregation on Capitol Hill. 2 For 44 years, Luckett s responsibilities had extended across every corner of the Tudor Place estate from inside the main house and the gardens and beyond, into the streets of Georgetown. Much of what we know about Luckett s life comes from the oral histories and written accounts of the Peter family after Britannia hired him in March She recalled, I was standing on the brow of the hill by the gate when he came in and asked: Do you want to hire anybody? Yes, I said. I do want to hire somebody! Well, I s looking for a job! Well, as I wanted someone to work the gardens, I asked him, What wages do you ask? Fifty cents a day and you needn t be afraid to take me neither! Which I told him I was not and from that day to this John has proved to be all that I could wish for. 3 Born a slave in Middleburg, Loudon County, Virginia, Luckett eventually lived on a plantation owned by the White family in Lewinsville, Virginia. Few written details record his life on the White plantation; however, one Peter family anecdote alludes to a routine familiar to rural northern Virginia slaves: John once told me that when he was a boy a slave in Virginia, that when the fire went out in his mother s cabin, she would send him to a neighbor s cabin with an iron kettle, or a shovel, to get some live coals with which to light the fire again. 4 Igniting and monitoring coals used to heat, cook, and provide light was a neverending chore for slaves and servants in 19th-century households. While working at Tudor Place, Luckett was so accustomed to handling the hot fuel source, he could turn coals over in the palm of his hand before igniting his tobacco pipe. 5 After working long hours on the White plantation, Luckett invested his time into crafting hand-made goods he could sell. Luckett told Armistead Peter, Jr., he made wooden baskets, explaining in detail how he would cut down a young white oak, without limbs, and rive the soft trunk into thin, pliable strips that he wove into baskets. He also sold a more expensive version; these baskets were stained with dark dye made from the bark of a maple tree. 6 As the Union Army advanced towards Manassas in 1862, soldiers destroyed the White family plantation and confiscated several slaves, impressing them to build fortifications. Twenty-one of these men resolved to run away, but only three including John actually escaped. Like hundreds of other runaway slaves, Luckett came to the District looking for work. 1

2 Figure 2. This undated photograph depicts two unidentified black laborers mowing the South Lawn with scythes nearly identical to those in the collection. At Tudor Place, Luckett s duties included clearing the garden walkways and cutting the grass on the expansive South Lawn. As a child, Armistead Peter, Jr., remembered watching Luckett wield a scythe, sweeping the blade skillfully back and forth across the grass. He taught me Heel down, and point up. He could mow with a scythe as close and as clean as anyone could mow today with the finest lawn mower. John was one in a million! 7 (Fig. 2) There are three late-19th-century scythes in the collection at Tudor Place, and it is likely Luckett would have been familiar with their long, curved shafts, well-oiled wood grips, and the sharp point of the toe on the iron blade. (Fig. 3) John also planted and cultivated the Peter vegetable garden, and worked closely with the various cooks. He maintained the ornamental plantings and flowers around the 8.5-acre estate, including the family s conservatory. 8 From 1875 until approximately Figure 3: Pine scythe with original wrought iron blade. The position of the grips suggests it ws intended for a left-handed user. 1904, Luckett received $22 a month for working six days a week at Tudor Place, or $264 a year. Every three months, Britannia carefully recorded the rate in her ledger until her grandson began accounting for daily expenses. 9 Unlike other servants, John s payments never varied, regardless of days absent for illness or holiday. He likely used this income to support his wife, Amanda (a local laundress), their 16 children, and eventually grandchildren. From 1874, the Luckett family lived at 222 F Street, SW, three miles from Tudor Place. Of the 16 children, only six lived to adulthood: Esaw, Jenny, Alfred, Harriet, James, and Edward. By 1900, Jenny, her husband and their three children resided with John and Amanda, while her youngest brother, Edward, his wife, and their two children lived nearby, at 226 F Street, SW. Dr. Armistead Peter, Britannia s son-inlaw, offered to buy the Lucketts a house in Georgetown on nearby Valley Street (present-day 32nd Street); however, Luckett declined. In this way, John Luckett diplomatically maintained an intentional separation and distinction between his family and his professional responsibilities to the Peter family. Soon John Luckett endeared himself to the next generation of the Peter family. When Britannia shared with him the birth of her great-grandson, Armistead Peter 3rd, he said, Please tell Mr. Armistead I feel proud to hear he has a son, and I hope I may live long enough to drag him around, as I used to do him. 10 Similarly nostalgic recollections and vignettes in the archive document hours of entertainment, counsel, and support Luckett offered to two generations of Peter family children. He often played with Armistead Peter, Jr., his siblings, and their neighbors, ferrying them in the wheelbarrow about the estate and supervising hunting and fishing trips in the woods nearby. 11 For example, in the spring of 1900, Britannia wrote: I hope you will not be disappointed with your fishing anticipations. Certainly John should accompany you. If not to make the success greater, at least the trip more enjoyable, for a trip without John has nothing worth. 12 Armistead Peter 3rd fondly recalled sledding down the 31st Street hill with old John Luckett running along beside me. While the collection of agricultural implements such as scythes, rakes and hoes at Tudor Place characterize the skilled, physically intense work Luckett accomplished, the fishing nets, poles, and bobsleds displayed in the house convey his opportunity to enjoy social and leisure activities. In his thorough account of the history of Tudor Place, Armistead Peter 3rd emphasized Luckett s role as guardian for the children, writing If John was along, the family always felt that the children were in good hands. My father said that John, to him, was the finest man he had ever known, black or white. 13 (Fig. 4) By Erin Kuykendall, Curator of Collections 1. Grandmother thought for a while and then said, I do not know of a single fault he had! John was a colored man beloved by one and all at Tudor. Grandmother s honesty was never questioned. This is the greatest tribute that I have ever heard paid to anyone black or white and John deserved it, if any one [sic] ever deserved such a tribute. Ms. 14, Box 69, Folder 20. Following more than a year of research and planning, the last stage of the Box Knot Garden restoration began in October Over the course of four weeks, the struggling English boxwood hedges and existing rose bushes were systematically removed. Archaeologists from Dovetail Cultural Resources, Inc., investigated the area while it was without plant material. They uncovered late 18th-century brick debris believed to come from the initial construction of the two wings of the house, the burned remains of a post-in-ground structure, numerous small artifacts, and a plow-field layer. With the completion of the archaeological investigation, the Knot Garden restoration went quickly. Previously installed French drains were uncovered, and testing revealed the need for the northeast corner to be raised to promote drainage. The soil was tilled, then sand and new topsoil were added to reduce compaction. The entire area was then regraded, just as Mr. Peter and his son had done in the late 1920 s. The Knot Garden was laid out with marking paint and twine to facilitate the installation of new boxwood and replanting of the roses. The last phase of the restoration entailed re-installing the turf pathways inside the knot design and around its border, along with four stepping stones in front of the Grape Arbor. The Box Knot feature has evolved since its first planting in the early 19th century when it was located in the east square of the north garden. Enclosed by boxwood hedges, the interior planting beds have been home to herbs, cottage flowers, roses, bulbs, seasonal color, and a Laburnum tree, which, according to Britannia W. Kennon, resided in the center during her childhood. Historic Peter family photographs of the estate guided efforts to restore the Knot Garden to its mid-20thcentury layout and design, and the garden now appears as it did during the ownership of Armistead Peter 3rd and his wife Caroline. It will take several years before the hedges achieve their desired height, but looking at the garden today, one can imagine its past and future grandeur. Elizabeth Peebles Preservation Manager Tudor Place welcomes Elizabeth Peebles as Preservation Manager, a position in which she will manage archaeological and building conservation projects at the site. A graduate of the University of Delaware s program in historic preservation and museum studies, Elizabeth worked as an architectural historian for the National Park Service in the National Capital Region and has an extensive background in documenting and researching Mid-Atlantic domestic architecture of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. 3

4 Owner as Artist Armistead Peter 3rd A Armistead Peter 3rd had a keen interest in drawing from an early age. However, it was not until he met the highly regarded American sculptor Paul Wayland Bartlett, his wife s step-father, that he sought the expertise and guidance of other trained artists. In Tudor Place, his folio about the house and its contents, Peter recalls Bartlett as a wonderful person, and to him I owed the encouragement to go to Paris to study painting. 1 During the winter of , Mr. Peter studied at the Académie Colarossi and the neighboring Académie Grande Chaumière, on the Rue de la Grande-Chaumière. These progressive ateliers offered American expatriates the opportunity to draw models from life and provided much needed studio space for a new generation of male and female artists reacting against the formal L École des Beaux Arts aesthetic. 2 Following this brief training and his return to Washington, Mr. Peter painted some of his best works, including a self-portrait in his naval uniform and a copy of the 1785 portrait, Martha Parke Custis, by Robert Edge Pine. Mr. Peter also shared his work with the public. For example, the portrait of his wife Caroline wearing a fashionable cloche inspired by Michael Arlen s then-popular novel, The Green Hat, hung in the 1926 Winter Exhibition at the National Academy of Design. In 1935 and 1936, he exhibited several paintings at the first and second Autumn Exhibitions of local artists at the lately established Phillips Memorial Art Gallery, founded in In 1953 he staged a one-man show of his watercolors at The George Washington University Library and again exhibited at this venue in 1959, 1962, 1964, 1973, and The 1973 show featured several Scottish landscapes, paying tribute to the Peter family s origins near Glasgow, and proceeds from the exhibition went to the National Trust of Scotland. Mr. Peter s artwork ranged broadly in subject matter, medium, and intentionality, from sketches of garden plans to exotic urban scenes abroad in Hong Kong, Japan, and Hawaii. Overall, the diverse collection of drawings and paintings are well executed, vibrant and speak to Armistead Peter 3rd s consistent experimentation with a diversity of materials, media and techniques. Together, this body of work spans more than half a century; its origins lie in the early Modernist movement of the 20th century, and this collection intersects important events in the history of collecting and painting in Washington, D.C. 1. 5 From the Executive Director Dear Member: I want to thank all of you who participated in our many programs this past year and who supported us through the Wish List, Garden Party, and the Annual Fund. The natural calamities of 2011 snow, ice, rain, and wind necessitated unanticipated but important repairs for the safety of our visitors and staff, but members contributions helped offset some of these expenses. Thank you for caring about and being a part of Tudor Place! With the New Year, we are well into the January cleaning of the main house, inventorying the collections on exhibition, completing our annual assessment of the buildings, and preparing to better serve the public. It is a herculean effort on the part of staff, but one that attends to the safety of our visitors and our cultural resources. In February we open with a celebration of our nation s Presidents. I encourage you all to come visit (remember, as a member you have a free pass) to see the rare Martha and George Washington objects that will be on display. This year, the future of Tudor Place as a public museum will unfold a new page. We are at a critical point, plain and simple. The main house must have a new heatingand-cooling system and electrical upgrades as soon as possible. The collections, even the most valuable and fragile objects, are in poor storage conditions on the site. Against this backdrop, we are taking Hartman-Cox Architect s concept design to the Advisory Neighborhood Commission, Old Georgetown Board, Commission of Fine Arts, Historic Preservation Office, and National Park Service, which holds an easement on the majority of the property. It is our charge, as stewards of this property, to provide for a safe future for Tudor Place. As members and friends of this wonderful historic site, we hope you will stay informed as we move forward.
