Stewardship Commission Records Date Span: Abstract: Official records of Southern Baptist Convention agency assigned the responsibility for promoting the Cooperative Program, stewardship development and capital fund raising. Collection contains official papers, documentation, minutes, organization studies, personnel, surveys, stewardship campaigns, promotions, and product files of the Stewardship Commission until it s dissolution in Size: 59 linear ft. (56 boxes) Collection #: AR 628 Historical Sketch The Stewardship Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention was created by actions of the convention from 1958 to1960. It was established May 21, 1959 in a meeting at Louisville, Kentucky and became fully operational on January 1,1961. Its roots go back to1925 and the work of the Conservation Commission (later Cooperative Program) which culminated in 1936, by the naming of J. E. Dillard as the first director of promotion of the Executive Committee. The new agency was charged with three programs: 1) Cooperative Program promotion, 2) stewardship development and 3) capital giving promotion. Dr. Merrill D. Moore, a native of Mississippi and then serving as director of promotion for the executive committee, was elected the first executive secretary- treasurer. With the passage of the Covenant for a New Century by the Southern Baptist Convention in 1995, the Stewardship Commission was dissolved in 1997 with its assignments transferred to the Executive Committee and LifeWay Christian Resources. Scope and Content Note The Stewardship Commission Records are a collection of the official papers, documentation, and records of the Commission from before its organization in 1959 until its dissolution by convention action June 19, The materials include official minutes of the commissioners and subcommittee meetings, organizational studies and surveys, stewardship campaigns and promotional efforts, personnel records, and product files. Inclusive dates are 1949 to The collection, which contains 59 linear feet, is arranged in alphabetical order by folder title. Records are arranged chronologically within the series. Major promotions and emphases identified

3 3 with the commission are sub-filed as Bold Mission Thrust, Cooperative Program, Forward Program of Church Finance, and Witnessing/Giving Life. Other major sub-divisions are Personnel, which contains employee biographical sketches, applications, and employment records, and Publications, which includes copies of products and publications of the Commission. Official minutes are contained in folders labeled Annual Report as well as in folders titled Minutes. Audiovisual resources, which include sound recordings, filmstrips, film clips, motion pictures, reel to reel tape recordings, audio cassette tapes, reel to reel video tapes, video cassettes, and 1 and 2 video broadcast masters, are included at the end of the main collection beginning with box 48. The collection contains one computer program about personal financial management. Materials in the collection were given by the Stewardship Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention.
