James 1:1 James, a bond-servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes who are dispersed abroad, greetings. The Jews of the, or simply THE DISPERSION, was the general title applied to those Jews who remained settled in foreign countries after the return from the Babylonian exile, and during the period of the second temple. At the beginning of the Christian era the Dispersion was divided into three great sections, the Babylonian, the Syrian, the Egyptian. From Babylon the Jews spread throughout Persia, Media and Parthia. Large settlements of Jews were established in Cyprus, in the islands of the Aegean, and on the western coast of Asia Minor. Jewish settlements were also established at Alexandria by Alexander and Ptolemy I. The Jewish settlements in Rome, were consequent upon the occupation of Jerusalem by Pompey, B.C. 63. The influence of the Dispersion on the rapid promulgation of Christianity can scarcely be overrated. The course of the apostolic preaching followed in a regular progress the line of Jewish settlements. The mixed assembly from which the first converts were gathered on the day of Pentecost represented each division of the Dispersion (Acts 2:9-11). (1) Parthians... Mesopotamia; (2) Judea (i.e. Syria)... Pamphylia; (3) Egypt... Greece; (4) Romans..., and these converts naturally prepared the way for the apostles in the interval which preceded the beginning of the separate apostolic missions. St. James and St. Peter wrote to the Jews of the Dispersion (James 1:1; 1Pet 1:1) (Smith s Discionary) Philippians 3:20 20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; 21 who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself. 1 Peter 2:11 Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts, which wage war against the soul. The transliteration of the Greek word for aliens is paroikos, and strangers is parepidemos.

Use the clear teachings of scriptures to interpret what is obscure / unclear (i.e. interpret scripture with scripture).

11 Definitions & Usage foreknowledge (1:2), pro, gnwsij prognosis AV 2x 1) foreknowledge 2) forethought, pre-arrangement / advance knowledge, foreknowledge, what is known ahead of time Vine s Dictionary - a foreknowledge (akin to A.), is used only of Divine foreknowledge, Acts 2:23, 1Pet 1:2. Foreknowledge is one aspect of omniscience; it is implied in God s warnings, promises and predictions. See Acts 15:18. God s foreknowledge involves His electing grace, but this does not preclude human will. He foreknows the exercise of faith which brings salvation. The Apostle Paul stresses especially the actual purposes of God rather than the ground of the purposes, see, e.g., Gala 1:16, Ephe 1:5,11. The Divine counsels will ever be unthwartable. Acts 2: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs, delivered up by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death The Foreknowledge of God (1 Peter 1:2) Proginosko Acts 26:4-5 of the Jews knowing Paul s former manner of life as a Pharisee Rom 8:29-30 of God foreknowing the elect / those He foreknew, He predetermined to become conformed to Christ s image; those He predestined, these He called & justified & glorified Rom 11:2 - God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew 1 Pet 1:20-21 Christ was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you 2 Pet 3:17-18 of believers knowing before about the distorting of Scripture,, thus warned to be on your guard lest, you fall from your own steadfastness, but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Spiros Zhodiates proginosko; from pro (4253), before, and ginosko (1097), to know. To perceive proginosko; from pro (4253), before, and ginosko (1097), to know. To perceive or recognize beforehand, know previously, take into account or specially consider beforehand, to grant prior acknowledgement or recognition to someone, to foreknow. (I) Used of mere prescience, to know before (Acts 26:5; 2 Pet. 3:17). (II) Used of God s eternal counsel it includes all that He has considered and purposed to do prior to human history. In the language of Scripture, something foreknown is not simply that which God was aware of prior to a certain point. Rather, it is presented as that which God gave prior consent to, that which received His favorable or special recognition. Hence, this term is reserved for those matters which God favorably, deliberately and freely chose and ordained. (A) Used of persons, to foreknow with approbation, to foreapprove or make a previous choice of, as special people (Rom. 8:29; 11:2). (B) Used of events, to previously decide or plan, to foreknow for God is to foreordain. 1 Pet. 1:19, 20 presents Christ as the Lamb of God foreknown God had planned and determined in His eternal counsel to provide His Son as a sacrifice for His people. Certainly more is meant than that God knew ahead of time that Christ would come and die. God s foreknowledge is given here as the cause for His Son s sacrifice - because He planned and decreed it. (C) In Rom. 8:29, in relation to believers, proginosko occurs with the verb proorise, aor. act. indic. of proorizo (4309), to predestinate. Fore-knowledge and foreordination are logically coordinate. The former emphasizes the exercise of God s wisdom and intelligence in regard to His eternal purpose and the latter emphasizes the exercise of God s will in regard to it. What He has decreed is what He has decided. This foreknowledge and foreordination in the Scripture are always unto salvation and not unto perdition. Therefore, it should be said that the Lord never foreordains someone to be lost. Rather, He foreordains unto salvation those whom He specially considered and chose in eternity past (see Matt. 7:23; John 10:14; Rom. 11:2; 1 Cor. 8:3; Gal. 4:9; 2 Tim. 2:19; Sept.: Hos. 13:5; Amos 3:2). Any thought of the lost being appointed or ordained unto condemnation should be understood as an act of passing over in which the lost are permitted to suffer the consequences of their choice of sin (1 Pet. 2:8). The salvation of every believer is known and determined in the mind of God before its realization in time. Thus, proginosko corresponds with the idea of having been chosen (eklegomai [1586], to choose) before the foundation of the world mentioned in Eph. 1:4 and logically precedes the action indicated by proorizo. Proginosko essentially entails a gracious self-determination of God s part from eternity to extend fellowship with Himself to undeserving sinners (Rom. 8:29).

12 The Sanctifying Work of the Spirit (1:2) The Sanctifying work of the Spirit (1:2), hagiasmos AV 10x 1) consecration, purification 2) the effect of consecration 2a) sanctification of heart and life / (1) as the process of making holy dedicating, sanctifying; (a) as the operation of the Spirit making holy, causing to belong completely to God, sanctifying work (1P 1.2); (b) as the careful moral behavior that expresses one s dedication to God pure way of life, upright behavior, holy living (1TH 4.3, 4, 7),; (2) as the moral goal of the purifying process holiness, right behavior (RO 6.22) Rom 6:15-23 slaves of sin but now slaves of righteousness & enslaved to God, fruit sanctification 1Cor 1:30 Christ our wisdom from God, righteousness, sanctification & redemption, 1Thess 4:3-8 God s Will is your sanctification 2Thess 2:13 chosen for salvation by sanctification in the Spirit & faith in the truth 1Tim 2:15 - continue in faith and love & sanctity with self-restraint Heb 12:14 - without sanctification no one will see the Lord Vine s - HAGIASMOS (agiasmoj), sanctification, is used of (a) separation to God, 1Cor 1:30, 2The 2:13, 1Pet 1:2; (b) the course of life befitting those so separated, 1The 4:3,4, 7, Roma 6:19,22, 1Tim 2:15, Hebr 12:14. Sanctification is that relationship with God into which men enter by faith in Christ, Acts 26:18, 1Cor 6:11 and to which their sole title is the death of Christ, Ephe 5:25,26, Colo 1:22, Hebr 10:10,29, 13:12. Sanctification is also used in N.T. of the separation of the believer from evil things and ways. This sanctification is God s will for the believer, 1The 4:3; and His purpose in calling him by the gospel, 1The 4:7; it must be learned from God, 1The 4:4; as He teaches it by His Word, John 17:17, 19; cp. Psal 17:4, 119:9; and it must be pursued by the believer, earnestly and undeviatingly, 1Tim 2:15, Hebr 12:14. For the holy character, hagiôsunê, 1The 3:13, is not vicarious, i.e., it cannot be transferred or imputed, it is an individual possession, built up, little by little, as the result of obedience to the Word of God, and of following the example of Christ, Matt 11:29, John 13:15, Ephe 4:20, Phil 2:5; in the power of the Holy Spirit, Roma 8:13, Ephe 3:16. The Holy Spirit is the Agent in sanctification, Roma 15:16, 2The 2:13, 1Pet 1:2 cp. 1Cor 6:11. The sanctification of the Spirit is associated with the choice, or election, of God; it is a Divine act preceding the acceptance of the Gospel by the individual. Easton - Sanctification involves more than a mere moral reformation of character, brought about by the power of the truth: it is the work of the Holy Spirit bringing the whole nature more and more under the influences of the new gracious principles implanted in the soul in regeneration. In other words, sanctification is the carrying on to perfection the work begun in regeneration, and it extends to the whole man (Ro 6:13 2Co 4:6 Col 3:10 1Jo 4:7 1Co 6:19) It is the special office of the Holy Spirit in the plan of redemption to carry on this work (1Co 6:11 2Th 2:13) Faith is instrumental in securing sanctification, inasmuch as it (1 secures union to Christ (Ga 2:20) and (2 brings the believer into living contact with the truth, whereby he is led to yield obedience to the commands, trembling at the threatenings, and embracing the promises of God for this life and that which is to come. Perfect sanctification is not attainable in this life (1Ki 8:46 Pr 20:9 Ec 7:20 Jas 3:2 1Jo 1:8) See Paul s account of himself in (Ro 7:14-25 Php 3:12-14 ) and (1Ti 1:15 ) also the confessions of David (Ps 19:12,13 51:1 ) of Moses (Ps 90:8) of Job (Job 42:5,6) and of Daniel (Da 9:3-20) The more holy a man is, the more humble, self-renouncing, self-abhorring, and the more sensitive to every sin he becomes, and the more closely he clings to Christ. The moral imperfections which cling to him he feels to be sins, which he laments and strives to overcome. Believers find that their life is a constant warfare, and they need to take the kingdom of heaven by storm, and watch while they pray. They are always subject to the constant chastisement of their Father s loving hand, which can only be designed to correct their imperfections and to confirm their graces. And it has been notoriously the fact that the best Christians have been those who have been the least prone to claim the attainment of perfection for themselves. Hodge s Outlines. The Purpose of your Salvation (1:2) That you may obey Jesus Christ (1:2,14,22), u`pakoh, hupakoe AV 15x 1) obedience, compliance, submission 2) obedience rendered to anyone s counsels, an obedience shown in observing the requirements of Christianity / (1) obedience, submission, compliance (RO 16.19), opposite parakoh, (disobedience); (2) favorable hearing, compliance with a request (PM 21) Rom 1:1-7 - we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles, for His name s sake Rom 5: through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous. Rom 6: though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, & you became slaves of righteousness Rom 15:18-19 Christ brought about the obedience of the Gentiles by word & deed thro Paul s preaching Rom 16:19 - your obedience has reached to all Rom 16:25-27 the gospel is to lead to obedience of faith 2Cor 7:15 - Titus remembers the obedience of you all 2Cor 10:3-6 - We take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ Phm 1:21 Philemon s obedience gives Paul confidence to write knowing that he will do even more than what he says Heb 5:8 - Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered 1Pet 1: As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts but be holy, for God is holy 1Pet 1:22-23 in obedience to the truth, your souls were purified for a sincere love of the brethren, thus fervently love one another from the heart The Privilege of Your Salvation (1:2) sprinkled (1:2), rhantismos AV 2x 1) a sprinkling (purification) 1a) blood of sprinkling 1a1) i.e. appointed for sprinkling (serving to purify) / as ritual purifying sprinkling; figuratively, of Jesus atoning sacrifice ai-ma r`antismou/ blood that is sprinkled to take away sin (HE 12.24) Heb 12:22-24 you ve come to Mount Zion & God, & Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, & to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel. This privilege belongs only to those who are truly born again (1 Jn 1:6-10)
