6 HISTORY OF NEW HOPE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH It is a problem to determine when some groups of worshipers become an official congregation. During the mid- 19th century, there was evidence of a spiritual unity among the people living in Berlin (now Brunswick), Maryland. This movement resulted in a united effort to organize a Methodist Episcopal church. The organization and first meetings for this purpose were held in the homes of interested citizens under the leadership and Divine guidance of Christian people. However, it was not until 1851 that a definite organization of Christian fellowship took place. At that time it was known as the "Berlin Church." This first church became the center of religious life for the community of around 300. It was the first organized congregation of any denomination in Brunswick. It was the "Mother Church" of four United Methodist Churches. The four churches were the Methodist Church in Petersville, which was built in 1850 and was sold to the Reformed Church in 1860, the Methodist Church in Sandy Hook, the Knoxville Church (which is now the A.M.E. Church], and what is now First United Methodist Church. At the time of the establishment, communities of Knoxville, Sandy Hook and Berlin were known as "The Berlin Mission," and were attached to the Buckeystown Circuit. The Methodist Episcopal Church (now the First United Methodist Church) was organized in Brunswick (then Berlin) in the autumn of 1851 by the Rev. Joseph M. Spangler. The building used was a log structure erected on a lot acquired from Lydia Ann Poole. The site was next to the old City Hall, on the west side of Middle Street, now Maryland Avenue. This location was between the present east and westbound tracks. The building was later converted into a dwelling house and occupied for many years by Mr. Web Hause. In June 1850, land grants of Frederick County record that Lydia Ann Poole conveyed to the trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church a plot of land designated as Lot #30 for a sum of $ This parcel of land, situated on the west side of Middle Street (now Maryland Avenue), contained an unfinished log house. This log cabin was not available for use until Payments for this property were to be made at the rate of $50.00 per year. Evidently by the time the first payment was due, the congregation was not prospering. The records show that in 1851 they sold half of this lot for a consideration of $50.00, which was the amount of the payment. The accommodation was small but served the purpose of worship service for about twenty years. The sanctuary was the main floor and a balcony provided space for the slaves who brought "their folks" to worship. In 1852, the first Sunday school was organized. This was the most promising foundation for the posterity of the church. The only names history has recorded of this project are B.F. Sigafoose and Mrs. Mary Virginia Hogan. The discipline of the Methodist Episcopal Church states that Mr. John Dixon, who was one of the first members of the Church and who afterward became a minister in the Wisconsin Conference, organized the first Sunday school in As far as we know, the Methodist Episcopal Church struggled through the 1850s. The opening of the "covered bridge," or "toll bridge," over the Potomac River in 1858 brought some prosperity to the community. The Rev. Joseph Spangler was the first pastor. He served the "Berlin Charge" seven years. Berlin was a part of the Buckeystown circuit at that time. For these seven years, the transportation varied. The usual route included driving from Buckeystown to Point of Rocks and if lucky, a canal boat ride to Berlin. The trains did not run on the Sabbath. Rev. Spangler could get a horse and buggy from his friend, Mr. Hackman, if necessary. In the meantime, the War Between the States made it necessary to use this log structure as a hospital to care for wounded soldiers, and in 1903 the government gave the church a financial compensation for the use of the building during the Civil War. The covered bridge was burned during the Civil War. More than thirty years later, a steel truss bridge was constructed over the Potomac River. When the Middletown-Jefferson Circuit was formed in 1858, the churches of Knoxville, Sandy Hook and Berlin (Brunswick) became a part of it. For more than twenty years this log cabin served as the only worship center for the community. During that period the congregation had outgrown the log cabin. Larger accommodations as well as "higher ground," above the flood level were needed. The log church and land were disposed of in 1872, and Berlin (Brunswick) was again attached to the Buckeystown Circuit. During the pastorate of Rev. Henry A. West in 1873, the present site on which the sanctuary is now located was
7 HISTORY OF NEW HOPE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH purchased from Mary and Adam Ridenbaugh for the sum of sixty dollars. On this location, a new frame structure was erected. This was a substantial building with colonial pews and was adequate for a congregation of about one hundred and fifty people and served the community until The trustees during this period were Adam Ridenbaugh, Thomas Watts, Henry l.apole, James McGaha, and William Sigafoose. The church at that time was connected to the Harpers Ferry Pony Circuit. In the early 1890s, many changes were taking place in Berlin. It was necessary to change the name because there was an older Berlin on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Many Germans had settled in this area and it is generally believed it was for this reason the name of Brunswick was selected. Between 1890 and 1907 the B&O Railroad developed both the east and westbound yards. These projects increased employment, creating opportunities that made Brunswick a "boom town" through the 90s. The Methodist Episcopal Church became the center of religious life. The facilities were available to many denominations that had moved into the community. Early in the history of Brunswick, these new people gave evidence of interest in establishing other denominations. In 1891, the Lutheran group met in the Methodist Episcopal Church to organize and plan a program for their church and later held services in the local theater. In 1892, the officials of the Presbyterian Church from Baltimore met in the Methodist Episcopal Church to organize and plan for a Presbyterian congregation and held regular three o'clock service on alternate Sundays. In 1893, the population was rapidly increasing and the community spread over such a large area that it became practical to organize a Southern Methodist group to serve the "East End" and New York Hill worshipers. No major improvements were made to the edifice until At this time most of these denominations had established or planned for permanent accommodations. The First Methodist Episcopal Church found it necessary to make extensive improvements and moved their headquarters to the Opera House for several months while the sanctuary was completely renovated and remodeled. A sixteen-foot front was added and a new and modern belfry was built. The Brunswick Herald of December 1, 1893 recorded, "It is now a roomy and neat building and in keeping with modern architecture." During Rev. J.M. Gillam's pastorate, , the parsonage on A Street was built. The parsonage was sold in The present brick structure was erected in 1907 during the pastorate of Rev. W. O. Perry. At that time the congregation worshiped in a tent located on A Street, opposite the parsonage. This brick structure served its purposed as a center of worship and a community convenience for forty years. In 1939, Dr. Norman Trott was appointed to serve the church. The construction of the educational unit began in 1941 (Dr. Trott eventually became President of Wesley Theological Seminary). During this period the congregation worshiped at the Imperial Theater and in 1942 moved to the new church. The sanctuary had been completely remodeled including stained glass windows. The education unit included modern classrooms, a Fellowship Hall, a Junior Chapel, and office facilities. The entire project was paid for during Dr. Trott's pastorate. Rev. William Warner, an area native, was appointed to Brunswick in 1959 and gave ten years of faithful service. He sensed the needs of the community and was particularly outstanding in the field of social service. During his pastorate the A. A. was organized and has been using the church accommodations since that time. The kindergarten was started in 1961 by June Utterback and served the community until The church tower, which had been delayed due to wartime shortages of building materials, was completed in The new tower had night illuminations and a carillon. Bishop John Wesley Lord, who was the first bishop to visit Brunswick, participated in the dedication service. Air conditioning was installed in the sanctuary and the pastor's office renovated. The Rev. John Hamilton came in 1969 and served the church for seven years and witnessed the church's 100th birthday. During that period the public address system was installed and the parament sets were completed. Rev. Hamilton fostered an active church school and youth programs. He promoted fellowship among the membership and started many activities: once a year birthday parties for everyone, Church school picnics, joint worship service in the park with New York Hill and Sandy Hook Methodist Churches, young adult church school class, and weekly Bible studies during Lent.
8 HISTORY OF NEW HOPE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH In 1976, Rev. Harry Ledgard was commissioned to serve the First United Methodist church in Brunswick. During his ministry he gave a great variety to the worship service. The youth of the church actively participated in many of these services with the popular "Chip," a puppet. The Youth Bell Choir was under the direction of Mrs. Ruth Nicholson with the bells coming from the Donald Darr Memorial. The library was organized and educational materials were made available. The "Pony Express" was an every member canvas in which the entire membership participated. Bibles were placed in all the pews. The "Stair-Glide" elevator was put into operation. One of the outstanding programs presented annually was the "Colonial Service" in cooperation with the Potomac River Festival. In the fall a special feature was 'The Galilean Sunday" where an outdoor service was held with Rev. Ledgard preaching from a boat on the small lake at Merryland Park. In 1979, a new roof was installed over the sanctuary. The stained glass windows were repaired and covered by lexan to protect them from the weather. First United Methodist Church participated in "Mission to the 80's", an evangelistic program to help spread the Gospel. Evangelism was the theme of the 1979 Lenten studies and rallies in the surrounding areas. A new furnace was installed in 1983 during Rev. William Sampselle's pastorate. New brick walkways were installed in front of the church and the church tower was refurbished during Rev. Dr. George Earle's pastorate, which was from Dr. Earle was known for his children's sermons and his adult Bible studies. During his pastorate many members of the Parish earned pins for completing the Disciples Study. A parish pictorial directory was completed during Dr. Earle's pastorate. It was during this time, that First UMC was joined with New York Hill UMC to become the Brunswick Cooperative Parish. From that time forward, different attempts were made to merge the churches and build a new church. During Rev. Robert McCullough's pastorate, , the new Allen electronic organ was put in place (1998) and the Brunswick Food Bank was moved to First United Methodist Church. During Rev. Clark Carr's pastorate, which commenced in January 1999, modern lighting was installed throughout most of the education unit, a new flat roof was installed over 50 percent of the educational unit, the altar was overhauled inside and out, and the Sanctuary and the Educational building were painted and cleaned. During this time, a "lay readers program" for worship services was initiated, a periodic Parish Newsletter was published to keep membership current on church activities, and a Wednesday night supper fellowship group began meeting. It was out of that Wednesday night group, that new energy and spirit for merging First United Methodist and New York Hill United Methodist began anew. During Rev. Carr's leadership, the parish truly began to operate as one church - with combined committees, youth group and leadership. When Rev. Victoria Starnes came as pastor in 2004, the churches were ready to make the move to merge. Since their vote in September of 2006 to merge, undergo and name change to New Hope UMC of Greater Brunswick and build a new church building, things have moved quickly. The congregation worshipped at the NY Hill building and the offices and outreach programs remained in the First UMC building. After only six months of worshipping as one congregation at New York Hill, that building was sold to Grace Baptist in July of The move was made back to the First UMC building on Maryland Avenue, and the land committee was led to forty acres of land on Olive School Road for the new church building. In 2010, Rev. Katie Bishop was appointed to New Hope to bring vitality and spiritual renewal in the midst of the building program. Plans are underway for the building and already the church is experiencing growth and excitement as they follow God's lead in this new direction. New outreach ministries to the community including quarterly "Faith In Action" events where congregants get out of the pews and into the community to serve have brought a renewed commitment to being the hands and feet of Christ.
