Tue. 4/16, 4/30 7 PM 8:30 PM Although we often say we are depressed when we are having a bad day, disappointing events or circumstances are a normal part of life and frequently result in passing feelings of sadness. Depression, on the other hand, is a medical illness that can be associated with problems at school and/or work, in relationships, and quality of life. It can be precipitated by an adverse life event or simply occur out of the blue. The good news is that treatment is available, and recovery is possible. Come learn more about depression. Charisse Nelson Fri. 4/12, 4/19, 4/26, 5/10 7 PM 8:30 PM In Romans 5:3-5 the Apostle Paul boldly states, suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character hope, and hope does not disappoint us but what happens when the storm is longer than anticipated and what is to be learned during the midst of the storm. This course will take a look at what the Bible teaches about perseverance. It will provide both spiritual and practical guidance for storm preparation, navigation, analysis, and application. It will explore how information gathered during a storm can provide future testimonies which can aid in navigating future storms as well as help others make it through their present sufferings. 12 HEALTH The Abyssinian Baptist Church MEDICAL and HEALTH MINISTRIES MEDICAL MOMENT on WELLNESS IMHOTEP represents the first figure of physician/surgeon and healer, who lived during the third dynasty in ancient Kemet 5,000 years ago approx. 2,200 years before Hippocrates. Imhotep was an astronomer, architect, mathematician, and poet, who developed treatments that are still in use today for intestinal disorders. WELLNESS is the active process of making choices towards a healthy lifestyle. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines wellness as "...a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." There are several elements to wellness or wellbeing: Physical, Mental, Emotional, Spiritual, Financial, Social, Occupational and Environmental. It is critical to maintain these elements at an optimal level to have a higher quality life. PHYSICAL: This requires and encourages care of your body by maintaining regular physical activity and proper nutrition. Regular exercise lowers your risk for multiple diseases, including high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer and even dementia. Regular physical exercise can lower your risk for some cancers by 10-20%. It improves your sleep, increases energy and mood. Regular exercise can even treat mild depression. NUTRITION: Eat a rainbow! Drink more water! A plant focused diet high in fruits and vegetables, nuts, low in saturated fats and dairy products, while limiting alcohol intake is recommended. Reducing added sugars can dramatically reduce your risk for heart disease. Excess added sugar is also tied to premature aging and reduced immunity. Be mindful of the food you eat, especially packaged and processed foods, which can contain added natural and artificial sweeteners. The WHO classifies red meat as a primary carcinogen having the same risk for cancer as smoking. Processed foods are not only low in vital nutrients like vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants. They end up replacing the very foods which can provide these nutrients and which give satisfaction and fullness. WHOLE GRAINS like oats, wheat, quinoa, rice, corn and barley provide more satisfaction and blood sugar control than other grains. This is because the grains have not been stripped of the nutritious exteriors containing more vitamins, minerals and fiber. It also is associated with better weight management, reduced belly fat and reduced risk for heart disease and stroke. Artificial ingredients for flavor and color are tied to a disruption of gut friendly bacteria that play a role in immunity, mood and anti-inflammation. Foods like beet juice, turmeric and saffron add color naturally, often with nutritional benefits. Finally, and by no means not least: Reduce stress and get the proper amount of sleep. Do not smoke!
