1 4th Quarter of 2013 And the Nominees are It is that time of year again to nominate or volunteer to take a role on the Executive Board. This year, Larry Kabrick, will be stepping down as President, H. Neil Reichard will also be stepping down as Vice President. I myself will be staying on as Secretary, however we need to elect a treasurer for this year. Debra Foye has graciously agreed to stay on as our event coordinator. You can your nominations to nominations@mvvc.net or contact Wayne at The club will not be able to continue unless we have an full Executive Board. Nominations are open for ALL positions and will be voted on at the Holiday Party. Below you will find the descriptions of the four positions taken from the current by-laws. President The President shall preside at all meetings of the Executive Committee. He/She shall carry out club policy and pass all proposed policy changes before the executive committee for final approval. The President shall also have the authority to sign checks drawn on the MVVC bank accounts. The President shall call at least one meeting of the Executive Committee per calendar year, and shall call such extraordinary meetings as requested by a majority vote of the Executive Committee. The President shall cause to disseminate in writing to the membership an annual fiscal report for the club, a statement of future plans and programs, policy changes and decisions reached by the Executive Committee and any other pertinent matters dealing with the affairs of the MVVC. In the absence of the president, the Vice-President shall preside and act as President. In the case of death, resignation, or disqualification of the President, the Vice-President shall become President for the balance of the un-expired term of the President. In the event that the Vice-President is unable or unwilling to assume the office of the President, or if the office of the Vice-President is vacant, the Secretary shall become President, until action can be taken by the Executive Committee to appoint a new or interim President. Vice President or Vice President s The Vice-President shall assist the President in conducting of administrative affairs of the MVVC and perform other duties as may be assigned to him by the President. Secretary The Secretary shall attend all meetings of the Executive Committee and shall keep full and complete minutes of the proceedings and all votes cast thereat. The Secretary shall have authority to sign checks drawn on the MVVC bank accounts. He/She shall perform all duties incident to the office as required by law. The Secretary shall oversee the audits of the club treasury and bank accounts, and assure that all reports are made available to the President and the Executive Committee at the completion of each audit. The Secretary shall ensure that all fiscal records submitted by the Treasurer are in proper order and are submitted in a timely fashion to the Internal Revenue Service each calendar year. Treasurer The Treasurer shall have the custody of all moneys, debts, obligations, and assets belonging to the MVVC and shall deposit all receipts in the MVVC account in a bank insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. He/She shall have direct control over the supervision of all MVVC assets and or payment of all club debts and obligations. He/She shall insure that strict compliance is maintained with these by-laws in all financial matters of the MVVC each calendar year. The Treasurer shall give Bond at the club s expense is such amount as may be determined by the Executive Committee. The Treasurer shall cause to be published in the MVVC newsletter a full and correct annual report on the financial condition of the MVVC. He/She shall also give a full and correct financial status report each month to the president and at any meetings of the Executive Committee. The Treasurer shall maintain a correct account of all receipts, disbursements, balances, assets and liabilities of the MVVC. All checks or other orders for payment of moneys in the name of the MVVC shall be signed by the Treasurer. The Treasurer shall submit his/her books of account and records to an independent Certified Public Accountant appointed by the Executive Committee when deemed necessary by the Executive Committee. All audits of the MVVC bank accounts, by an independent Certified Public Accountant, shall be at the MVVC s expense.

2 Prez Sez! The Ramblings of Your MVVC President-Larry Kabrick Is it FALL already? Yes, as hard as it really is to believe, this year more than any, I just can t believe that I m looking outside at not only the leaves changing colors again but many of the leaves are already dropping! Wow, the middle of October---Oh, how the time slips away before we know it. It certainly has been a fantastic spring and summer for cruising in your Volkswagen with some of the most wonderful days imaginable, including those in recent weeks. Even as I sit here writing this, I reflect back on the weekend just past which was nothing less than picture perfect here in Michigan. I didn t want it to end. I was out cruising around with my awesome kids in my Volkswagen. In fact, another classic car club in which I m involved hosted a cruise from downtown Plymouth traversing picturesque back roads to make our way up to a famous old Michigan gem of a grist mill in Parshallville,MI (near Fenton). Although I could have been getting much needed tasks done at home, nothing seemed more right on a day like this to hop in my little Volkswagen and make the most of what was a true gift from mother nature. I hope you all are doing the same with your vintage Volkswagens, making the most of the sights, sounds and smells that our state has to offer, whether you re doing it with a club like ours or just loading your family into your classic v-dub to make unforgettable memories and regain special family time that seems to be all too lacking in the lives many of us choose to take these days. Your Michigan Vintage Volkswagen Club has some great events coming up to bring this year to a close in which I would enthusiastically invite you, your family and friends to participate in, beginning with our annual color tour, coming up this weekend, 10/20/13 as we trace the route of Thomas Edison, beginning in Sterling Heights and ending in picturesque downtown Port Huron. Please take a few minutes to read about it and the other remaining events chronicled both in this newsletter and your club website If you can make the time, come out and share in the fun and comradery with fellow members! And by all means, mark your calendars for (2) great events in November, hosted by one of our generous sponsors, Chris Braden of Munk s Motors. The first, a Vintage VW Tech seminar to be held at Munks Motors (Waterford) on 11/9/13 featuring Steve Norris of Norris Racing PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT OUR CLUB S ANNUAL FESTIVAL. Then, a mere 2 weeks later is a 2 nd event sponsored again by Munk s Motors a Garage-2-Garage sale AGAIN, PROCEEDS FROM WHICH WILL BENEFIT OUR ANNUAL FESTIVAL Parts, collectibles, toys, cars and a plethora of VW-related goodies up for grabs We are very grateful to Munk s for their hospitality and generosity in putting on these events! Thank you! And finally, mark your calendars now so you can attend the MVVC Annual Holiday Party and Membership Meeting this year to take place at the Stahl s Automotive Foundation Museum, located in the upper East Side in Chesterfield, MI. This will be held Saturday, December 7 th from 2-7pm. Always a great way to close out the year for our club. It just won t be the same without you! This is also an opportunity for you to vote for your MVVC board members going forward. Be sure to check these and any other upcoming events on our website Page 2

3 And on a final note, it is with some reservation that I ve made the decision, after only one year, to step down as your president. Unfortunately, it simply hasn t been the experience I was hoping for in implementing some of the big changes I and my fellow board members (and you all of course) were proud to move forward on in Given the fact that, as a single dad I have numerous demands on my time, coupled with executor duties over my father s estate which have proven to be experiences I could never have imagined in my life, I m no longer interested in being part of the 3% that does the work while the other 97% show up and complain, let alone the lessons I ve learned in securing successful sponsorship of our annual festival, trying to rebuild bridges burned by prior regimes. That is what you call an honest assessment of why this position is just not fulfilling for me. I became part of this club back in the late 1980 s because I truly have a passion for Volkswagens and wanted to be part of something that made me happy. Frankly, I have enough challenges in my life without having to add something that should be enjoyable and has turned out to be quite the opposite. I only wish there were more members that were willing to step up and offer a little more support in terms of our newsletter, and helping to plan and volunteer at the one big event which this club relies on in terms of financial support for the year, and even in having other events throughout the year. Volkswagens will always be a special part of my life but running around to make everyone happy, except for myself, is not part of the picture that I envisioned. I would like to put a HUGE thank you out there to my colleague, Wayne Burling, without whom frankly this club would not have existed. Wayne, alone, has accounted for 80% of the 3% of the active members in our club and for that I am grateful. What a successful club needs is a higher percentage of folks like him. Enjoy every minute of the upcoming holiday season----these are special times that matter most in our lives Thank you so much to those who have been long time supporters of the MVVC This has been a good year for preparing this club for future growth. 4 Sidekick s Cruise-In By Wayne Burling On September 8th, four type 1 beetles and a new new beetle embarked on a 2 hour cruise. From our starting point we headed south on Beck Rd, turning west on Ann Arbor Trail then continuing west on Ann Arbor.Plymouth Rd. We then turned south on Prospect and headed for Depot Town and Ypsilanti. Then west again on Michigan Ave. stopping to meet up with another VW a Vanagon, that needed a jump cause the battery was dead. Our new new beetle gave it the juice it needed and we again were on the road through farm land, small towns, and more farm land, and yes even more farm land. Then it was south on 127 towards Hudson. We then turned west again and headed to Osseo and our final destination Sidekick's Café, a 50 s themed diner where we met up with 11 other VWs and enjoyed a couple hours of admiring each others VWs and talking to the other owners. We had 2 VWs that came all the way from the Toledo area to join up as well as a couple from the Jackson area. We enjoyed a lunch at the diner and it was then time to head back home. 5 "Thomas Edison Tour- In Search of Thomas Edison" This year s fall color tour was a reprise of a tour that the club did several years ago. The tour began in Sterling Heights at the Clinton River Park, we left the park and headed toward Mount Clemens stopping on the way at Miller s Orchard for some Cider and Donuts and an impromptu tour of the owner s VW collection. From Miller s Orchard we proceeded to Mount Clemens and the Grand Trunk Railroad Depot Museum where Edison learned the telegraph. He also worked for the railroad there in Mount Clemens. We then drove through Chesterfield Township and along Anchor Bay through New Baltimore. Then continue along M29 past Marine City, Algonac, Saint Clair along the St. Clair River through downtown Port Huron, terminating at the Thomas Edison Inn (now Frieghter s), near the Blue Water Bridge. 9 For Sale... Volkswagen Workshop Manual -passenger cars (hardcover) Edition 52/57, printed in Germany. I would like to sell this pristine condition book. Measures 8-l/2 x12, x l-l/2 inches. Ser- I could throw in a 1961 Instruction Manual, a Instruction Manual, and a vice/repair Handbook. The book is in pristine condition except for some small paint splatters on the back cover. There are NO finger prints or any marks on the pages. I am asking $150 plus $13 postage. My husband bought two new Beetles, in 1953 and At that time, here in Dearborn, Michigan they were quite a novelty. He drove the '53 out west to the Bonneville Salt Flats. What I have is 1/2 kg of 343/5 kalaharibeige and one quart of 206-DB 423 tabakbraun. These were probably left from our VWs in the 1950s. The cans look to have never been opened. I have 3 heads/covers, 9 cylinders, a crank, 2 flywheels, a box of valve linkage, a set of heat exchangers, and a few other shrouds. They have all been stored in a garage. I was wondering if some of your members would be interested in some original VW parts. I have a few more pictures if someone is interested.
