1 Medieval Wooden Sculptures in Norway ERLA HOHLER Introduction The two lists below contain 1) an inventory of medieval wooden sculptures in norway, and 2) a survey of written literature about these. The intention is to make this material more accessible to future scholars. The inventory This is a list of all polychrome wooden sculpture preserved in norway today, i.e. in so far as they are known (one or two in private ownership may have escaped). Material not included is figures which are integral parts of the church architecture (portals, columns), or used as decoration on furniture (chairs, ciboria, choir screens). Also excluded are sculptures in previously norwegian, (today Swedish) areas. All sculptures in the country are now found either in museums or the churches. The best or most interesting works have been carefully described and discussed over the years. Many more are mentioned only in shorter general surveys, and a number of sculptures still in their churches are only mentioned in the database of NIKU (see below), a few so far not discussed at all. Identification of churches: Topographical numbers (A1 A457) is used for all churches (see Foreningen til Norske Fortidsminnesmerkers Bevaring, Register , Topografisk register p , and Tillegg: Herredsfortegnelse p ). This is the system used in Antikvarisk Arkiv by The Directorate for Cultural heritage (Riksantikvaren). The origin of the sculpture is normally quoted as that given in the museum s accession catalogue; this is not necessarily the sculpture s original home, since it may have been moved from one church to another over time. Identifications of sculptures by motifs, particularly single saints, are based on earlier scholars suggestions. Dates, much discussed in the earlier literature, have here for spatial reasons been cut down to early and late, where the divide is generally agreed as The sculptures present location are stated with the name of the museum, and the museum s accession number (if any). A certain number may have been re-catalogued

2 34 Erla Hohler at some time. The sculptures still in churches are listed as NIKU i.e. Norsk Institutt for Kulturminneforskning: Oversikt over kontrollert kirkeinventar. References: for reasons of space, only one, possibly two, references have been selected for each sculpture. These should guide the reader to a more complete list of relevant literature. KhM Web refers to a detailed catalogue of all the Museum of Cultural history s objects to be published in The survey of literature An attempt to present a complete list of all literature which treats norwegian medieval sculpture, is arranged chronologically according to the year of publication and added at the end. This will demonstrate what kind of information, or which discussions between previous writers, have been accessible to each particular scholar during his personal time of research, and also the research subjects developing over the years, with steadily more information accessible. The list starts with the works of vicars and other officials such as Gerhard Schøning or Frederik Nannestad, who in their parishes, or on their travels around the country, took notice of sculptures they found interesting, without knowing much about them. Later, in the second half of the 19th century, we get the more conscious antiquaries, who based their understanding on historical and theological knowledge: Nicolay Nicolaysen, Lorentz Dietrichson and Bendix Edv. Bendixen. They produced surveys of churches and their fittings and took an interest in collecting all unwanted objects, particularly sculptures. Museums were gradually founded. In the papers by Einar Lexow from 1920 and 1945, a presentation of early acquisitions and research can be found. following this period of collecting and registration came the time for reflection; origin, inspiration, and precise dates became an academic challenge. Harry Fett, with his European art-historical schooling, can be said to have started this with his two great publications from 1908 and 1909, where he established aesthetical and styleanalytical methods and referred to European parallels. Models and connections now became popular subjects, and the discussion of masters and workshops sometimes became fervent. The large material from the later Middle Ages was presented and discussed by Eivind Engelstad in 1936, after his painstaking travels around the country. (The book does, however, not list the crucifixes; he gives his reasons for this on p. 8). A similar, all-embracing survey of the earlier material can also be said to exist after Martin Blindheim s three large publications of 1952, 1998, and here he shows all the best

3 Medieval Wooden Sculptures in Norway 35 preserved or interesting works from Early Romanesque to high Gothic, also mentioning most of the other known sculptures from this period, along with a certain number never earlier treated. new here is the presentation of colour photographs: a few occurred in his book from 1998, while the book from 2004 added a whole new perspective of polychrome experience something which had been lacking in Engelstad s black-and-white presentation. The Directorate for Cultural Heritage has today, after systematically registering from the 1970s all medieval church inventories in the country, contributed to a complete list of all preserved sculptures. Many authors have discussed sculptures from particular districts of the country, sometimes attempting to point out local styles, important central models, or workshops. Due to the great loss of material today, this tends to be difficult. By degrees, a new area of interest became visible: technical investigations. Martin Blindheim s work from 1952, where he introduced his practical observations, opened norwegian eyes for possibilities here. from the 1960s on the technical conservators examinations and conclusions became indispensable. Paint- and media analyses, careful removal of overpainting etc. produced continually more interesting results. Leading scholars here were Unn Plahter and Svein Wiik, with an increasing number of colleagues and students. A steady international cooperation has been central here. The same can be said about the questions of the sculptures iconography. An important nordic contact has been the bi-annual conferences since 1972, (ICO) where young scholars meet and exchange views. In 1981 Peter Anker declared the discussions on dates and styles as out-debated. The contents, the deeper meanings, and the sculptures importance in the spiritual life of the contemporary society were subjects which should now be ready for attention. These questions slowly took more place, in thread with the contemporary European development. Complicated angles of incidence such as liturgical, extra-liturgical or sociological aspects are today considered, and the sculptures in their materiality are seen as contemporary witnesses to society and attitudes in general. As can be gathered from the list of literature, there has been an increased production of books and papers since the 1990s. Medieval art history is a subject which has gradually attracted younger scholars. Today, a large number of master- or doctoral theses are found. Angles vary: some engage in debates on previous conclusions, others pick up new methodological approaches which may throw new light on this multiform material.the present literature list ends in It will be interesting to see what new questions will be asked in future research?
