5 Handout 12 - Revelation CHAPTER 19: Transition from the Tribulation to the Millennium: Hallel: = Praise Yah = Lord (the Divine name of God as in Yahweh). Hallelujah (Alleluia) IS the highest praise! In most languages, the word is not Translated but allowed to remain in its transliterated form (taken right from the Hebrew Hallelujah, or Greek, Alleluia). A. The fall of Babylon marks the end of the Tribulation and the beginning of the Millennium. B. 7 H. Verses 9-10: The same angel who previously has commanded John to write now commands him again. But when John falls down to worship (do homage) to this angel, the angel says the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. This means that all prophecy, the Book of Revelation included, is based upon the acknowledgment of Who Jesus is and What He has done. This is the very vital force, breath, or life of true prophecy. Jesus is called the Word (John 1:1). Socalled prophecy has no life apart from him, so we never honor a messenger such as an angel or prophet, without pointing to Jesus. I. Verses 11-13: Jesus comes to earth as 1. Faithful (trustworthy) 2. True (Truth itself) 3. With righteousness doth He judge (decide) and make war (battle). 4. His eyes are like flame (seeing to the source, and burning away impurity as not worthy). 5. On His head are many crowns (diadems, which are ruling crowns). 6. Name written which none knew except He himself (given as an honor by the Father a. 1 st name: the name of eternal Sonship: No man knoweth the Son but the Father (Matthew 11:27) b. 2 nd name: The Word of God (the name of His first coming) c. 3 rd name: King of Kings and Lord of Lords (the name of His second coming) 7. Clothed with a vesture dipped in blood (comes as a warrior). J. Verse 14-16: Jesus comes with the saints of heaven and the angels. The brightness of His coming and the sword of His mouth are what decide the battle of Armageddon. K. Verse 17-18: The supper of the birds and beasts (feasting on the bodies of the dead) is contrasted to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. Anyone who has passed through the veil of death in the Last Days will be part of one supper or another. II. CHAPTER 20: THE MILLENNIUM A. Verse 1-3: An angel (not even a mighty angel ) assigns Satan to the abyss for 1000 years. This is not the Lake of Fire. Satan s judgment is postponed until the end of the Millennium, because he will incite the people to fight the battle of Gog and Magog. At the end of that battle he will be cast into the lake of fire. B. Verse 3-6: All saints who have DIED or BEEN RAPTURED before the Millennium will reign in glorified bodies. They will neither marry or be married. They will not be able to die. They will be the only ones who can travel between heaven and earth during the Millennium. The rest of the people who enter the millennium are not part of this first resurrection. Therefore 1. They can still marry and bear children. 2. They will live for a long time, though, because the presence of Jesus on the earth will prolong life for both people and for the rest of creation. 7

8 There will be little sickness and death, because trees will exist in Jerusalem for the healing of the nations. 3. The people on earth will not be delivered of their sin-nature yet. They can still be tempted to sin by the thought of their own hearts, even though the devil and his angels are all bound. They must each decide for themselves to serve Jesus. Jer emiah 17:9-10 (9) The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (10) I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. D. Verses 7-10: The battle of Gog and Magog will occur at the end of the Millennuim. People will decide to rebel because of their hearts. In that day it will be a Theocracy; there will be no one to obey but Jesus and the Saints. Some will rebel at this. They will be destroyed by Fire as they gather against the Beloved City which is the very throne of Christ during the Millennium. E. Verses 11-15: The Great White Throne Judgment will happen at the end of the Millennium. It begins with the fire that destroys the Gog and Magog armies. Everyone is caught up to heaven both righteous and unrighteous. 1. The righteous who served God on earth and have not yet gotten their glorified bodies will do so at this time. 2. The unrighteous who die in the battle of Gog and Magog will join all the unrighteous since the beginning of time, in a resurrection of the damned. for the White Throne Judgment. The sea will give up its dead, and all the tombs of the wicked dead. It will be somewhat like the rapture but not exactly; the wicked will get eternal bodies, but not glorified bodies. The scripture here which pertains to the righteous also pertains to the unrighteous in another sense: all will be judged for the deeds done in their body: 2Corinthians 5:10 (10) For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Two types of books will be brought out (1) The books of deeds done on earth each human being will have deeds recorded there. (2) The book of Life wherein it will be recorded whether the person is born-again or not. Romans 2:12-16 (12) For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; (13) (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. (14) For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: 8

9 (15) Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) (16) In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. III. Scriptures Concerning the Millennium. A. David the Regent: Hos 3:5 (5) Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the LORD their God, and David their king; and shall fear the LORD and his goodness in the latter days. B. The 12 Apostles ruling over the 12 Tribes: Mat 19:28 (28) And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. C. Universal Peace: Isaiah 2:3-4 And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. D. Universal Prosperity Isa 65:22-24 (22) They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands. (23) They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them. (24) And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear. E. Universal healing and length of life Eze 47:12 (12) And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine. Isa 65:20 (20) There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed. F. Light of the Sun and Moon increased. 9

10 This could be because the environment will be at a restored state. Isaiah 30:26 (26) Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound. G. The Temple will have a Throne in its midst from which Jesus will rule. Other than that it will have no furniture, except for a table which stands for communion with God. Eze 43:5,7 (5) So the spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of the LORD filled the house. (7) And he said unto me, Son of man, the place of my throne, and the place of the soles of my feet, where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel for ever, and my holy name, shall the house of Israel no more defile, neither they, nor their kings, by their whoredom, nor by the carcases of their kings in their high places. H. Jewish Missionaries Zec 8:20-23 (20) Thus saith the LORD of hosts; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities: (21) And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before the LORD, and to seek the LORD of hosts: I will go also. (22) Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD. (23) Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you. IV. Scriptures Concerning the Renovation of Earth by Fire 2Peter 3:10-13 (10) But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. (11) Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, (12) Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? (13) Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Ecclesiastes 1:4 (4) One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever. I. CHAPTER 21: NEW HEAVEN AND EARTH! 10

11 Verses 1 A. On the last handout we learned that the old heaven and earth flee away in the Great White Throne Judgment. 1. The new heaven and earth is evidently quite different from the present form of existence which involves three realms (heaven, the universe, and earth). After the Great White Throne Judgment and the Renovation of the Earth by Fire, there will be a new type of existence, where the present separation of heaven, universe, and earth will not apply. 2. In fact, the spirit realm will merge with the natural realm so that we can t really imagine what it s like. For one thing, there will be no more sun, moon, stars, or sea. The earth s natural atmosphere will have merged with heaven s atmosphere, so that the plants etc. that will be on earth at in this day are more like the plants in heaven, etc. Nothing will die; life will be throughout by God s Spirit. 3. The reason for this is that God Himself will dwell in the new heavens and earth, and He is Spirit. (Verse 3): And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. B. Verse 2: The New Jerusalem (originally part of heaven) will come down to earth. C. Verse 3: As said before, God Himself will be among the new order of things, bringing about a state where the natural is perfected in the spirit. The Millennium is but a type and shadow of this. During the Millennium life will be prolonged, but death will still exist. 1Corinthians 15:25-26 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. D. Verse 4-6: No more death, sorrow, crying, pain. The Bible says in His (God s) presence there is fullness of joy. Psalm 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. There have been times when I have been so immersed in the Spirit of God that I became unaware of anything but life, joy, peace, pleasure, and well-being. There was nothing else. This presence of God galvanized me filled me with a presence as of electricity where it seemed impossible to experience anything else but God s Holy and Life-giving Spirit. We can hardly imagine what the day of God will be like, but sometimes He gives us a taste of it on earth. 1. He who sits on the Throne makes all things new. All things of earth are eternally perfected in His presence. 2. The water of life (the river of life) presently in heaven, will now be in the new Jerusalem on earth. This is the outflow of the Spirit and eternal life in pure form E. Verses 7-8: Jesus now contrasts two types of people that will exist at the end of days. 11

12 1. The redeemed, who will be full-fledged sons and daughters of God. 2. The lost, who will be in the lake of fire, the second death. 3. God considers all of humanity fundamentally one. That is why the fall of Adam resulted in original sin being inherited by everyone. Also that is why one Man, Jesus Christ, could die for the sins of all. 4. That is why even in the Day of God when all things are new, hell will still exist. Where is hell? Remember, right now the people in hell do not have bodies they are spirit beings. After the Great White Throne Judgment- they will have bodies that can last eternally. 5. An interesting verse is Isaiah 5:14, which says, "Therefore HELL HATH ENLARGED HERSELF, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it." 6. If hell is in the center of the earth the makeup of the inside of the earth may be changed (enlarged) in this day. But we must remember this is the eternal age. Even the concept of space or place itself has been transfigured at this point ( read Rev 22:14-15). 7. Remember, hell is not created for man; it was created for the devil and his angels. Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. God does not want anyone to go there and has made salvation available to ALL and ANYONE who receives His Son. F. Verse 9-11: The angel shows John the New Jerusalem. It is filled with the light of God. It is called in another place a bride adorned for her husband. That is because the redeemed of all ages (the Bride of Christ) dwell there. G. Verses 12-14: 1. The New Jerusalem s foundations contain the names of the 12 apostles. Ephesians 2:19-20 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone. 2. The gates are named after the 12 tribes of Israel. Israel is the gate through which the Son of God (seed of Abraham) entered into the earth. Psalm 24:7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. H. Verses 15-16: New Jerusalem is square; that is the length and breadth is equal to the height, which towers up into the heavens. The square is roughly 1,500 miles on each side. The wall itself is much smaller (216 feet high), so that you can see the buildings and other features of the city over the wall. Another option is a foursided pyramid, but this is not as likely. I. Verses 17-18: 1. There is a clarity (a transparency) to both the wall and the city itself. The wall is like Jasper (a clear crystal-like stone). 2. The city roads etc. are made of gold of such purity that it is like glass (meaning extremely reflective). 12

13 J. Verses 19-20: The foundation stones are laid one on top of the other. Each layer extends around all four sides of the city. 1. Jasper (clear as crystal) 2. Sapphire (brilliant blue) 3. Chalcedony (a sky blue agate-like stone with other colors running through) 4. Emerald (bright green) 5. Sardonyx (red and white) 6. Sardius (reddish/honey colored) 7. Chrysolite (golden, transparent) 8. Beryl (sea green) 9. Topaz (yellow green, transparent) 10. Chrysoprasus (jade green) 11. Jacinth (violet) 12. Amethyst (purple) The light of the city within shining through these various colors in the foundation of the wall topped by the wall itself composed of the crystal-clear jasper forms a scene of dazzling beauty. J. Verse 21 The gates (named after the 12 tribes) are made of one huge pearl each. Pearls are jewels normally made by an oyster s secretions over an implanted foreign object such as a pebble. Jesus, eternal Son of God, was implanted in the earth as a human child, through the lineage of the Jews. Israel brought forth the Messiah in travail, and now the redeemed of both Jews and Gentiles are honored in the City of God. Jesus is the Pearl of Great Price. In this case of these heavenly pearly gates, God must have miraculously created them himself. K. Verse 22-27: Here we are in the eternal state. God provides not only life, but light, so that there is no more need for sun or moon. At this point the time for the propagating of children will be over because by the time of the Great White Throne Judgment, no one will have mortal bodies any more. 1. There is no more death - also no more natural birth. 2. There is no more night. Glorified bodies will not need rest; God will be our rest. II. CHAPTER 22: THE ETERNAL STATE A. Verse 1: The river which proceeds out of the throne of God and of the Lamb is not the same as the river issuing from the Millennial sanctuary; it is the outflow of the Spirit. It is eternal life in pure form. Both God and Christ will be on the throne in the Day of God, however Christ s rule, while still supreme over heaven and earth, will be subjected unto the Father in love. 1Corinthians 15:28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him (Christ), then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him (God) that put all things under him, that God may be all in all. 13

14 B. Verse 2-3: The Tree of Life is a huge tree planted in New Jerusalem. The river runs parallel to the main street of the city, both proceeding from the throne of God. The tree s trunk is on the right side of the river but its branches span both the street and the river, so that people on both sides have access to its fruit. It bears 12 types of fruit for the healing of the nations. 1. Not that the nations (peoples) are sick anymore, but they have the life and health given to them that was denied to them in the Garden of Eden when Adam chose the wrong tree the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. 2. By eating of the Tree of Life, mankind will finally participate in the destiny God planned for them. 3. In the Garden of Eden, God did not deny us the Tree of Life, but we chose the wrong tree. Jesus cross became the tree that restored us to the rights we lost in the Garden of Eden after the Fall. 4. That is why the verse mentions no more curse the curse of Adam has been reversed. C. Verses 4-5: The name of God shall be written on our foreheads, and we shall behold His face. Mankind has always been created in the image of God. But reborn men are so identified with God s image, that we even bear His name, as a reflection of His glory. It does not say that angels will bear this Name on their forehead. We cannot imagine what this will look like; perhaps it will be more spiritually than naturally evident. E. Verses 6-7: The angel tells John why he was given these visions: the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done. Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book. F. Verses 8-9. Revelation 1:5 calls Jesus the Faithful Witness. He came to John so that the world would know, and could get ready for the end times. No wonder, after John received revelation after revelation, he was overwhelmed, ready to kneel before the first holy representative of God that he saw. He realized these visions were about to come to an end, and he wanted to thank somebody. He went to bow before the angel, just responding to an urge to be grateful and reverent for all that he had received. But the angel again told him to worship God. G. Starting in verse 10 through 16: Jesus Himself takes over and gives these last words to John: Rev 22:10-16 (10) And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand. (11) He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. (12) And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. (13) I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. 14

15 (14) Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. (15) For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. (16) I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. H. In verses 17-21, The Apostle John himself prophesies by the Word of the Lord. He pronounces a blessing on those who keep the sayings of this book, and a curse upon those who add or subtract one word from it. The book or Revelation is that important.could He also prophesies that it is the Spirit and the Bride who will be the voice calling Jesus back to earth. Jesus as the Author of Life responds to the born-again who cry to Him in the Spirit. Rev 22:17-21 (17) And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. (18) For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: (19) And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. (20) He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. (21) The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
