PAGE 2 BISHOP S GUILD LEADERSHIP CHANGES After three years of being the President of the Bishop s Guild, Ed Gray passed the gavel to Michele Purgason, the new president for the next two years. An official installation ceremony recognized the contributions and accomplishments of the outgoing Executive Committee and introduced the next Executive Committee members. Bill Quinn (Most Blessed Sacrament, Arlington) and Donna Springer (Good Shepherd, Colleyville) were both recognized for outstanding accomplishments and over-the-top devotion to get the job done in the last two years. Ed Gray and his wife, Teri, were thanked profusely for all the work and energy they utilized during Ed s tenure and they were presented with a plaque from Bishop Olson that read: Ed Gray passes the new Bishop s Guild gavel to Michele Purgason. Dear Ed, Your sincere devotion and generosity made a difference for the Bishop s Guild in the Diocese of Fort Worth. Thank you for steering this membership organization as President for the last three years. Leading with much visible passion and the conviction that building this Guild would impact the future of the priesthood seemed to keep you motivated and inspired. It worked. You have set the pace that others will follow, and I personally thank you and offer my most sincere appreciation for all you have accomplished. In Christ s name, I am, sincerely yours, Most Reverend Michael F. Olson, STD Bishop of Fort Worth THE BISHOP S GUILD Courtney Burns and Ginny Mahl prepare for their leadership roles with the Bishop s Guild. Tom Casey President Michele Purgason introduced her new team starting with Vice President, Tom Casey. Others on the new Executive Committee are Secretary Ginny Mahl; Social Media Marketing Director Courtney Burns; Inter-Ministry Coordinator David Haley; Membership Director Lee Maxwell; Parish Captain Development and Best Practices Director Brian McManus and Advancement Foundation Liaison Paula Parrish. Ed Gray will remain as Immediate Past President. Lee Maxwell David Haley

PAGE 3 THREE NEW PRIESTS IN FORT WORTH! Bishop s Guild members had reserved seating to see three of the seminarians they support in prayer and in treasure, become ordained priests. Fathers Matthew Tatyrek, Joseph Keating and Nghia Nguyen celebrated their ordination on May 21, The nearly 2,000 year-old ceremony to ordain men into the Sacred Order of the Priesthood continues to be a moving experience. It goes to the core of what it means to be Catholic, said Advancement Foundation Executive Director, Paula Parrish. It brings tears of joy to see it in person, she said. The Imposition of hands and the reading of the Prayer of Consecration are most compelling. These young men now have sacrificed their personal lives to lead a life that follows Christ and they help all of us become Disciples of Christ. Ordination May 21, The laying on of hands by all the clergy for each ordained priest is quite symbolic. 2. The Most Rev. Michael F. Olson, Bishop of Fort Worth, concludes the Mass with three new priests. 3. Members of the Bishop s Guild watch the Ordination with special interest in the seminarians they have been supporting

PAGE 4 BISHOP S GUILD MEMBERS MEET THE SEMINARIANS On Wednesday, May 25, the Bishop s Guild celebrated its Annual Membership Dinner at St. Bartholomew Parish Hall, once more elegantly decorated for this special occasion. Bishop Michael F. Olson Rev. John Mark Klaus, TOR, and Seminarian David La Pointe Members enjoyed hearing from the Most Reverend Michael F. Olson, STD, Bishop of Fort Worth, and Reverend James Wilcox, Director of Vocations. Many priests and a large contingency of Bishop s Guild members and their guests, totaling more than 270 people, attended this event. Bishop Michael Olson offered meaningful insight into the human formation pillar for the men at the seminary. He said this particular aspect of the men s formation happens best in the college years as they learn independence and self-reliance. His remarks were followed by the keynote speaker, the Very Reverend Gregory M. Boquet, OSB, Rector of Saint Joseph Seminary in Louisiana, who delivered a powerful and inspiring message on the vocation to the priesthood and the formation of seminarians. Fr. Boquet offered very humorous opening and closing anecdotes that endeared him to the audience. Rev. Christopher Stainbrook visits with Rev. John Robert Skeldon Members had the opportunity to meet most of the Diocesan seminarians and they heard from two of them. The touching personal testimony by two of the seminarians, David La Pointe and Jeffrey Ambreit- Quepóns, who talked about their experiences at St. Joseph Seminary and its impact on their own journeys to become priests, was another highlight of the evening. The event concluded with a special prayer for vocations written and led by Rev. James Wilcox. The new Bishop s Guild members, after receiving their distinctive lapel pins, were invited to have a photo taken with the Bishop. Very Rev. Gregory Boquet, OSB Rev. James Wilcox Thanks to the generous hearts and support of many, the Bishop s Guild has grown to 230 members, including 9 Associate members and 5 Lifetime members. We are more than halfway to our original 2018 goal of 400 members. Seminarian Jeffrey Ambreit-Quepóns Seminarian David La Pointe

PAGE 5 Bishop Guild Members enjoy seminarians at their table. Seated are Dr. Tom Purgason, his wife, the newly elected president of the Bishop s Guild, Michele Purgason, and Social Media Director, Courtney Burns. BISHOP OLSON CELEBRATES SPECIAL MASS AT VIETNAMESE MARTYRS CHURCH Recently, Bishop Olson said a beautiful Mass at the largest Vietnamese parish in the Diocese, Vietnamese Martyrs. The pastor there, Rev. Vinh Van Vu, CMC, and his assistants, Rev. Larry M. Nguyen, CMC, and Rev. Hoang Minh Nguyen, CMC, concelebrated with the Bishop. After Mass, Fr. Vu spoke to dozens of interested parishioners about the Bishop s Guild. Bishop Olson spoke and introduced Maurice Moon, a seminarian, who shared his poignant journey to discerning Christ s call. This parish now has 22 Bishop s Guild members and four Associate members, plus many more donors who did not buy a membership, but simply sent in numerous donations in support of the Diocesan seminarians. Rev. Vinh Van Vu, CMC, poses with the Most Rev. Michael F. Olson, STD, Bishop of Fort Worth, after the Bishop said Mass at Vietnamese Martyrs Church. Rev. Lawrence Nguyen, CMC, and Rev. Vu, CMC, flank Bishop Michael Olson before the Bishop s Guild presentation to the parishioners. Advancement Team members and guests enjoy the experience too. Sara Engler visits with seminarian Rijo Philip. The ladies of a unique dance and chorale group made a special dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary on May Day.

PAGE 6 News around the Foundation ADVANCEMENT FOUNDATION TEAM MEMBER DEPARTING Special Events Coordinator, Yolanda Newcomb, is leaving our Advancement Foundation to spend more time with her mother in Puerto Rico and focus on other personal endeavors. Her last day is July 13. She generated nearly half a million dollars gross when she created the last two Respect Life Galas. She also organized all the Bishop s Guild events, the last Catholic School Banquet, the Annual Diocesan Appeal Kick-Off Reception, numerous in-house events and at the same time, provided Spanish translations of innumerable documents. As petite as she is, the shoes she is leaving are huge and she will be sorely missed. DIOCESAN CFO IS ONE OF TOP FINALISTS IN THE FORT WORTH BUSINESS MAGAZINE S CFO OF THE YEAR AWARD Mary M. Goosens, CPA, Fort Worth Diocese CFO/COO, was recognized as an Honoree at the 2016 CFO of the Year ceremony held at the Fort Worth Club. 8 PAGE 8 PAGE 4 Stewardship as a way of life can be difficult to track since tracking discipleship is hard to do. With that said, there are practices which are common among Stewardship parishes. WHERE DO YOU THINK YOUR PARISH STANDS? Best Practices of Successful Stewardship Parishes: 1. Pastors lead the way! He is the spiritual leader, visionary and model Steward. 2. Leadership formation is a high priority. Staff, Councils, Ministry Lay Leaders and all parishioners. 3. Once a way of life, it s for life! Continual lifelong formation individually, as a family and a parish community. 4. Stewardship is consistently preached from the pulpit. Pastor, Associates, Deacons, Lay Witnesses. And this doesn t mean just money! 5. Communication is year round! Bulletins, newsletters, social media, website, ministry leader group. 6. Radical hospitality: not just about money, carefully planned ministry fair, ministry leaders follow up with all new volunteers. 7. Stewardship Committee is continually formed and active. Spiritual formation is a priority followed by a commitment to living as a Disciple of Christ. 8. Spirituality is at the heart of the parish! Practical spirituality, forming disciples to live out our Baptismal call. 9. Hospitality is the heart of the parish. Members are genuine and kind to their brothers and sisters. The parish is not a click for only the in-crowd. Each Sunday the priest tells us to go in peace to love and serve the Lord. This picture is a perfect depiction of what that means; to live joyfully so others will think, That person has something that I want, I must find out what it is! Are you the face of Christ for everyone you encounter? This fall, Stewardship Committees are bringing together all of their ministry leaders, staff and councils to promote collaboration by looking for ways to integrate Stewardship as a way of life in the fiber of the parish. St. Vincent de Paul already hosted a successful leader gathering in June and the other pilot churches are eagerly awaiting their events. August 3...St. Bart s August 20...Sacred Heart August 27...St. Peter the Apostle September 12...Immaculate Conception, Denton October 29...Good Shepherd LET US BE REMINDED THAT OUR ENTIRE LIFE IS A GIFT FROM GOD. We can pray, Lord, this life is not mine, but Yours. You know me better than I know myself. Help me to love others like You love me.
