5 Introduction: Congratulations on acquiring this devotional and on committing this quarter to prayer. Prayer is the privilege that keeps us plugged in to the power of God. This is the privilege that Christ purchased for us on the cross. It is the freedom to come boldly into the very throne room of God without the fear of rejection, retribution or wrath. To the contrary we are all welcome in the place of prayer and have been guaranteed an audience with the King. Prayer ensures that the resources of heaven are always available to you on earth. It locks the two realms together so that the supernatural becomes a natural part of your everyday experience. Those who pray can expect miracles, breakthroughs, opportunities and Divine favour over their life. They can expect God to show up and to show off when needed. In this respect, prayer produces a life of peace and power when you commit your days into God s hands. Prayer is also the ultimate expression of humility. It is our way of saying to God that we need him and that we have no intention of going it alone. When we humble ourselves in search of God s help, he promises to meet us there with provisions and power for the journey ahead. The only choice we have to make is whether we want to live: A natural life or a supernatural life A mundane life or a miraculous life An average life or an anointed life A limited life or a limitless life i CAN COMMUNITY CHURCH i C C D E V O T I O N A L 5

7 Guidance on Prayer: Key texts: Eph 6:18, Phil 4:6, Rom 8:26, Col 4:2, Ps 22:3, Jude 20, Ps 38:9, Ps 6:8, Matt 11:12, Eph 5:18-20, Ps 46:10 Introduction to Prayer The word prayer has both a specific and a generic meaning. Specifically, it is speaking with God. Generically, it embraces the broad spectrum of ways in which we communicate with the Almighty. This means that there are many different ways, types, and forms of prayer. Paul instructs the Ephesian church to pray always with all types of prayer. Here are 10 types of prayer mentioned in the scriptures, as well as how to pray them effectively. 1. Supplication: (Acts 1:14, Eph 6:18, Phil 4:6) Supplication comes from the Greek word deesis and primarily means a wanting or need. Therefore, supplication is the act of presenting needs or desires to God. Unfortunately, this is all that prayer involves for most people. By itself, supplication falls short of quality praying. 2. Intercession: (I Tim 2:1, Is 59:16, Rom 8:26) Intercession comes from the Hebrew word poga meaning to cause to intercede (intervene on behalf of another). Intercession is always an act of intervention, of going between others and God or others and the devil. It is otherwise known as standing in the gap (Ez 22:30). 8 3. Thanksgiving: (Phil 4:6, Col 4:2, Ps 100:4) The prayer of thanksgiving is a faith prayer. It is usually associated with thanking God in advance for answering your prayers. Time should always be allocated in prayer for thanksgiving. During this time, you should detail in itemised fashion everything that you believe you have received in prayer. General thanksgiving is usually lip service. Sometimes in prayer, the Holy Spirit will prompt you to stop asking and just start thanking! Prayer should begin and end with a time of thanksgiving. 4. Praise: (Ps 22:3, Ps 100:4, II Chr 20:21-24) Intimacy with God is never developed if all you ever do is pray, Lord, give me Praise means to speak well of. Praising God means more than saying, Praise the Lord. In prayer, it has to do with magnifying His attributes, character, and works. Praise is usually offered to God out of gratitude for what He has done, recognition of what He is doing, or faith for what He will do in the future. The prayer of praise is excellent by itself as well as with other forms of prayer. Not only does it invite the presence of God into your circumstance, it releases confusion into the enemy s camp. 5. Praying With the Spirit: (Rom 8:26, I Cor 14:2-15, Jude 20) For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men but unto God. I Cor 14:2. The Spirit helps us to pray by making intercession through us in a language unknown to us. When praying this way, we are praying about things in perfect harmony with the will of God. This kind of praying bypasses the human intellect/mind and is totally supernatural in character. Every Christian ought to pray with the Spirit daily. 8 i CAN COMMUNITY CHURCH i C C D E V O T I O N A L

9 6. Groaning: (Rom 8:26, Ps 38:9, Ps 102:19-20, Jn 11:38) Sometimes in prayer, words will cease to be adequate and groanings will take their place. This again is the Spirit helping us in prayer. Genuine groanings cannot be bought on at will, but will be the result of the Spirit overwhelming you with a burden. When a person is groaning in the Spirit, he/she can appear to be in agony. (Luke 22:44) Though words are not said, these groanings speak volumes to God. 7. Weeping: (Ps 6:8, Joel 2:12, Ps 39:12, Ps 126:5, Ps 56:8, Heb 5:7) Scripture clearly reveals that God hears, understands, and is acquainted with the tear-language! Weeping for a need, as opposed to simply having a feeling for a need, is by itself a powerful form of prayer. 8. Warfare Praying: (Eph 6:12-18, Matt 11:12, Matt 16:19) Warfare praying is violent praying directed against any force that opposes the Kingdom of God. All the spiritual weapons of war are used at this time, including the blood of the Lamb, the word of God, the name of Jesus and the authority of the believer to bind and loose. This is an authoritative prayer in which commands, orders or demands are made/given in Jesus name. The Holy Ghost may lead you into intense battle through this kind of praying. i CAN COMMUNITY CHURCH i C C D E V O T I O N A L 9

10 9. Psalms: (Eph 5:18-20, Acts 16:25, The Book of Psalms) The word psalms means songs. Much of David s prayer life involved singing songs to God. David simply sang his prayer rather than just saying it. Praying like this does not demand great song-writing skill. Notice that most of the psalms do not rhyme. Your psalms (prayer songs) do not have to rhyme either. You simply sing your prayer from your heart. This type of praying builds intimacy with God. 10. Silence: (Ps 46:10, I Sam 1:12-13) Be still and know that I am God. Because prayer is speaking with God as opposed to just speaking to God, time must be given for God to speak. If you do all the talking, it s just a one-way conversation. Pausing in prayer occasionally for a period of silence and stillness will greatly improve the quality of your praying because you will learn how to have a two-way conversation with God. Further to this, a period of silence will allow you to reflect on what you have just prayed or are about to pray. Finally, there are times when you have said all that you can say, and you ve shed all the tears you can. Lingering silently in His presence at this point is still an effective form of prayer. Conclusion Our prayer lives must go beyond the give me, give me mentality of the prodigal son on his way out. (Luke 15:11-12). If you are really interested in improving the quality of your praying and in developing intimacy with God, then start praying with all prayer. As you learn how to utilise these different forms of prayer, they will take the monotony out of your praying and add excitement like you ve never dreamed possible! 10 i CAN COMMUNITY CHURCH i C C D E V O T I O N A L

15 October Prayer works As oxygen is to the natural man, so is prayer to the inner man. It is the air we breathe or the atmosphere in which faith can flourish and thrive. Prayer is our power-lead that connects us to the source from which all of our blessings flow. It is the voice of our faith and the primary way in which our faith is expressed and exercised. Without prayer; faith is silent and silent faith cannot move mountains. This month we seek to strengthen our understanding of and commitment to prayer. The goal is that our prayers become deeper, more meaningful and ultimately more effective. Learning to pray is like learning to drive. It involves some theory but mostly practice. There is only so much you can learn about prayer in a classroom. Instead, if you really want to pray effectively you must pray regularly. When prayer transcends the religious duty and instead becomes the voice of your faith, it will move mountains, open locked doors, break through barriers and fill your life with testimonies. 81 November Wisdom Wisdom is the application or implementation of knowledge. As such it is not something we feel or think. It is something we do. Wisdom is how we use knowledge to our advantage in the form of smart choices and great decisions. This month we are praying for wisdom. This means that we want God to inform our decisions and choices so that they work for us and not against us. True success is the fruit of wisdom as is any other meaningful achievement. Our goal is to enter 2019 on a new level. That new level is the divine ability to make the best choices. Each day greets us with a set of choices and decisions to make. Each of them is important because our life will become the sum total of the decisions ad choices we made. Even small decision about inconsequential things have the capacity to control major aspects of our lives. For this reason, we want to walk in the light of Divine wisdom especially as the world gets more and more complicated. When wisdom is present, you will not only see clearly what other people find confusing, but you will find ways to achieve what many people say cannot be done.
