7 A Prince, but not of Wales ; a Shoemaker or a Tailor? *Footnote from page 29. Unfortunately the Rev. Mr. Wild's history of Brookfield was altered before appearing in Abby Hemenway's Gazeteer of Vermont and so errors have been repeated again and again as his origina l manuscript has never been published before. An English prince did indeed com e through Vermont. But not the Prince o f Wales. It was Edward Augustu s ( ), the fourth son of George II I (and five years younger than the Prince o f Wales.) He had been stationed with th e British army in Quebec and was ordered to join the fighting in the West Indies i n late By the time his equipment wa s organized it seemed less risky to travel overland to Boston than to sail fro m Halifax in mid-winter. He left Canada in January 1794, and crossing Lake Champlain the sledges carrying his belongings broke through th e ice and were lost; so from Burlington south he travelled "light" accompanied by about eight men. A New Hampshir e newspaper reported that he travelled without any retinue, just a couple o f Canadian sleighs various tales i n Hemenway to the contrary. Welcomed in Burlington by a committee of eminent men he is supposed to have stopped at Col. Jacob Davis' tavern in Montpelier. In Williamstown he stopped at Elijah Paine's. Paine, a Harvard graduate, had moved in 1784 to the ver y western corner of town near Mill Hill Roa d and in 1794 still was living in a log hous e according to his grandson Charles ' memoirs. Presumably it was at th e Paines' that the Prince asked whethe r they read anything but the Bible, and was told they also read Peter Pinda r 's writings which were popular and scorching satire s on the royal family. According to a March 6, 1794 Concord, N.H. newspaper account this reply "struck the Prince as dumb as an oyster." A few miles south of Elijah Paine's the Prince would have been in Brookfiel d (assuming his travelling an old road preexisting the 1799 Paine Turnpike), an d here comes the Wild/Hemenway tale o f Abner Pride, the cobbler (shoemaker), and the Prince 's audaciousness in kissing Mrs. Pride. Abner Pride took title in April 1794 to a 100-acre lot given to Mrs. Hepzibah Cross as the first woman settler i n Brookfield (where the Robert DeForge s live on East Street). No buildings were mentioned in the 1794 deed. South of the Pride lot is "E. Stratton's Inn," probably built before Ebenezer Stratton had owned anothe r 100-acre lot south of his inn or tavern since Barely six weeks after His Roya l Highness passed through Vermont, th e American Herald of Liberty (Exeter, N.H.) published an "Anecdote" on March 18th. Apparently stories about th e Prince 's trip were still good newspaper tidbits. Since the Wild/Hemenway version has been retold so many times here is the contemporary account. "ANECDOTE./Mr. Gwhelp, alias Princ e Edward, passed thro' Vermont, called o n a Greenmountain taylor, and bein g enamoured with his fair spouse, (for som e Princes, you must know, have passions as well as men) he extorted from her lips a KISS; and turning to her husband aske d him, How he felt, to see his wife kissed by a Prince? the Taylor forgetting "th e respect due to Princes," and to o ungrateful for the honor don ;z,him, very briskly applied his foot, to Mr. NED's posteriors; and then asked him, How i t made a Prince feel to have his BREEC H kicked by a TAYLOR?" Prince Edward, after whom Prince Edward Island is named, stayed in the West Indies about six months and returned t o Canada after the campaign was over. In 1799 he was made Duke of Kent. He final - ly married in 1818 at the age of 51, an d although he never was-prince of-wales-o r King, his only child became Queen Victoria. Unfortunately no diaries survive t o detail the Prince's Vermont journey s o the "anecdotes" copied from one newspaper to another are the only contemporary records, and they leave all to o much to the imagination. Abner Pride must have known something abou t leather working as he was appointed "Leather Sealer " for Brookfield two years later, but he is not called a cobbler in any town records. The question remains, did the Prince stop at a cobbler's (Wild, 1862) or at a tailor's (1794 newspaper), and where? Elizabeth A. Livingsto n February
