1 Mitchell & Horlbeck legal collection, SCHS Creator: Mitchell & Horlbeck law firm Description: 5 linear ft. (6 boxes) Biographical/Historical note: Law firm of Charleston, S.C. In 877 Julian A. Mitchell (86-907), who had earlier practiced law with William Whaley (87-879) and William D. Clancy (born ca. 85), formed a partnership with Henry A. M. Smith (85-94). Julian A. Mitchell's son Julian Mitchell ( ) succeeded him as a partner in the firm of Mitchell & Smith, and later, Julian Mitchell was a partner in the firm of Mitchell & Horlbeck, which was established around 9. Frederick H. Horlbeck joined the firm of Mitchell & Smith around 908, and Henry A. M. Smith continued as a partner until 9. His son, John Julius Pringle Smith (born 887) was also a member of the firm of Mitchell & Smith. Scope and content: This collection consists of bound volumes, mostly letter books and form books, generated by several related law firms in Charleston (S.C.). The earliest volume (870-87), an indexed letter book, contains copies of correspondence of the firm of Whaley, Mitchell & Clancy. Correspondents include F. L. Cardoza (Cardozo), J. W. Grace, Jones & Ashford, E. W. M. Mackey, Gustav Staeven, Carlos Tracy, Ulman & Gazzam (a New York law firm), and Thomas H. Willingham. Records of the law firm of Mitchell & Smith date from 875 to 9. A form book ( ) contains decrees, orders, affidavits, and complaints. Also included in this volume is a page of rental accounts for Ashley Hall Plantation, listing 4 tenants and acreage rented. Names of individuals and businesses appearing in its index include Lawton & Sons, William K. Trapman, George A. Trenholm & Son, and Mrs. Elizabeth C. Wickenberg. Names appearing in subsequent volumes ( ) include Klinck, Wickenberg & Company, the Agricultural Society of South Carolina, the Fourth National Bank, the Liberian Exodus Association, Henry Behrens, Riordan & Dawson, Oddfellow Lodge, William K. Ryan, Francis Vose, the Virginia Fire & Marine Insurance Company, Anna Wigfall, Calvin Claflin, H. M. Comer & Company, W. M. Lawton & Sons, Creekside Plantation, Shoolbred Farm (near Flat Rock, N.C.), R. C. Barkley, G. W. Klinck, Anna Walpole, the Sea Island Steamboat Company, A. Form books of the 880s also include an abstract of title for Lems Bluff Plantation, a second list of renters at Ashley Hall Plantation, and a drawing of a house "at 0 Mile Hill."
