2 You Are My People (Hosea 2:23) But ye are an elect race... A royal priesthood... A holy nation... A people for God s own possession All four phrases are taken from the O.T. (Ex. 19:4-6, Deut. 7:6).

3 An Elect Race Race denotes a family, kindred, offspring, a nation, a race. (Vine) Strong s Lexicon 1. race, offspring. family stock, race, nation. English A group of people related by common descent or ancestry. Caucasian, African, Asian

4 Elect Race Israel was a race of people from one father (Abraham). People of the same race look like one another. Having similar characteristics. Skin color Body shape Height Eyes Nose Hair

5 Spiritual Israel An elect race We are a race of people from one Father (1 Peter 1:17). And we should look like our Father. 2 Cor. 6:17-18 Come ye out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be to you a Father, and ye shall be to me sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. 1 Pet. 1:15 But like as He who called you is holy, be ye yourselves also holy in all manner of living.

6 Eph. 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, even as God also in Christ forgave you. 1 John 4: In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. Holiness, love, forgiveness, patience, sincerity, faithfulness, jealousy, truthfulness, generosity, kindness.

7 A Royal Priesthood Israel was a kingdom of priests. (Ex. 19:6) In spiritual Israel, ALL are priests. ( ye v. 9) Royal Royal Palace, Royal Family, Royal Wedding We are a priesthood connected to King Jesus.

8 The Priestly Duties Included: Knowing and teaching the law. My people are destroyed (Hos. 4:6) Leading the nation in worship. Heb. 13:15 Through Him then let us offer up a sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of lips which make confession to his name. Serving the people of God. John 13:1-11 Jesus set the example of humble service by washing feet.

9 A Holy Na=on Physical Israel was a holy nation (Ex. 19:6) Set apart for God, exclusively His. Be ye holy, for I am holy (Lev ). In like manner, we are citizens of a holy nation. Eph. 2:19 No more strangers and sojourners but fellow citizens with the saints Phil. 3:20 For our citizenship is in heaven

10 A Holy Na=on Citizenship means Responsibilities! Citizens of a physical nation have responsibilities: taxes, participating in times of crisis, national defense, etc. Philippians 1:27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel ( Behave as citizens worthily ).

11 A People For God s Own Possession Possession Strong 1. a preserving, a preservation. 2. possession, one s own property. A valued property, particular treasure...said of silver and gold. Spiritual Israel is God s special possession.

12 Spiritual Israel Is God s Special Possession Acts 20:28 We have been purchased by the blood of Christ (He loved you that much!!) Titus 2:14 (Jesus) Who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a people for His own possession, zealous of good works.

13 YE ARE (1 Pet. 2:9) Elect Race Spiritual characteristics of the Father Royal Priesthood Serving, worshiping the King Holy Nation Behave as citizens worthily. People for God s own Possession Special possession, zealous of good works.

14 What We Should Be Show forth = Proclaim, make known by praises, declare abroad, tell. Excellencies = Wonderful deeds, moral excellence, goodness. ( Excellent qualities ). You ARE all these things (elect race, royal priesthood, holy nation, special possession) for a purpose à That you may proclaim (tell, declare) the wonderful deeds of God!

15 All four figures show the demand for righteous living and service. Elect race Must look like our Father. Royal priesthood Service, Worship Holy nation Behave as citizens worthily God s possession Zealous of good works Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. (Matt. 5:16)

18 A Royal Priesthood Israel was a kingdom of priests. (Ex. 19:6) In spiritual Israel, ALL are priests. ( ye v. 9) Royal We are connected to King Jesus. Rev. 5:9-10 Worthy art thou to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and didst purchase unto God with thy blood men of every tribe, and tongue, and people, and nation, 10 and madest them to be unto our God a kingdom and priests; and they reign upon the earth.

19 Introduc=on Oh, how Israel had disappointed God. How they had broken His heart. I suppose that only those who have suffered the heartache of an unfaithful spouse can fully understand God s use of Hosea and Gomer to describe his love and his pain for Israel. Hosea & Gomer In Hosea God likens Israel to an unfaithful spouse. A wife that has run away and chased after her lovers. A wife that had forgotten her covenant with her husband. Because of that God had commanded Hosea to marry Gomer a wife of whoredom. She had three children Jezreel (God scatters); Lo-ruhamah (no mercy); Lo-ammi (not my people) God says Israel had chased after her lovers the idols. Contend with your wife, contend; for she is not my wife, neither an I her husband, and let her put away her whoredoms from her face, and her adulteries from between her breasts. (2:2) They were no longer his people he would no longer show mercy destruction and captivity would come. But in the same book Hosea projects to the future to the Messianic age, when He would again call a people His people, and he would once again show mercy. Peter refers to it in 1 Peter 2:9-10 Ye are an elect race -- No people, but now the people of God; now have obtained mercy. Peter is talking about the church of the new covenant. Ekklesia, church, not used in this passage, but that is exactly who Peter is talking about. He uses four figures all drawn from the OT to describe the people of God of the New covenant.
