GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION Welcome to Kremer s Vacation Bible School course A TINY BIT-O-TALENT. Throughout this course you will witness feats of amazing ability, fantastic flair, and spectacular skill! Kremer Publications, Inc.

As with each of the Kremer courses, four goals were set. 1. VERSATILE A Tiny Bit-O-Talent was designed to be used for large and small congregations. As a reproducible course, churches have the flexibility to use whatever portions of this course they wish, for preschoolers through adults. Student lessons are provided in both King James and New International (1984) versions. Since these courses are not dated, they may be enjoyed throughout the year. Churches are given the right to make copies of any sections they wish, including the music. Churches also have the ability to reuse the course at any time in the future. (Permission is NOT granted for churches to sell this product.) 2. FOCUSED This course presents the Word of God in all its truth, purity, and simplicity to Christ s lambs. Many congregations consider VBS as their first line of mission work. Consequently, the few hours available during the days that this course is taught must include a clear and concise message. Children must be shown the curse of the law, that they might realize that they are sinners in need of a Savior. They must also be clearly shown the promise of the gospel, that out of God s great love for us, he sent his son Jesus to take our punishment on himself. This gospel message should shine clearly in each of the lessons. 3. ENJOYABLE Every component of this course is designed to stimulate the students. The stories, activity sheets, crafts, songs, etc. are coordinated to form a very enjoyable and memorable series. 4. USABLE This course has been designed to be easily followed and well-stocked with ideas and suggestions. THEME A TINY BIT-O-TALENT is based on the theme passage, Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord Colossians 3:23. ( Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men KJV.) LESSONS Day One: Miriam uses her special talent to worship (Ex. 15:1-21) Day Two: Bezalel uses his special talent to create (Exodus 36:1,2) Day Three: Ruth uses her special talent to be a friend (Ruth 1:1-22) Day Four: Isaiah uses his special talent to tell others (Is 6:1-8) Day Five: Tabitha uses her special talent to serve (Acts 9:36-43) DAILY SCHEDULE Churches are free to schedule their daily routines as best fits the time allotted to this course. This curriculum will work well with either a traditional classroom setting where one teacher remains with the class throughout the day or with a spoke-like schedule where teachers are assigned a part of the day for their area of expertise. These lessons will also work well to be presented indoors or outdoors. In designing your daily schedule remember the following sections: Opening Devotion Talent Show Lesson Time Application Time Activity Page Time Snacks Crafts Singing

Closing Restroom Breaks THE DEVOTIONS Each day should begin with a joint devotion followed with a short talent show. Devotions help set the theme of the day. TEACHER S GUIDES Each lesson has a brief teacher guide included. This will help the teachers realize the theme, summary, and scheduling for each class. There are also several suggestions included on each guide if teachers wish to add some interesting crafts or discussions. The teacher s guide also provides answers for the days activities. BACKGROUND AND APPLICATIONS A special file is included that gives teachers interesting story background information that may help in one s personal study. Those sheets also include applications that should accompany the story. ACTIVITIES Each lesson for preschool through grade six is followed with an activity page. A few of these activities may need additional craft materials, markers, or Bibles. CRAFTS This course includes a set of craft ideas. Crafts are chosen to be simply done and made with materials that are easily accessible. Lower two levels do the same crafts as well as the two upper levels. Feel free to use these ideas or substitute with your own craft projects. SONGS A Tiny Bit-O-Talent is the theme song for the course. If preferred, children can be taught one verse each day of the course. A second CD with fun Bible songs is included free with this course. Kremer Publications also has available DVD song disks with a great collection of fun Bible songs. (These disks are not coordinated with this course.) PROMOTION AND FOLLOW-UP You will find the Promotion and Follow-Up section helpful in both advertising your VBS program to the community and making the follow-up worthwhile. TALENT SHOW In addition to the devotion that prepares the children for the day s lesson, there will be laughs and fun taking place right on your own stage. And where will we find the talent? Of course, from the children. The week will begin with a few specially chosen volunteers to display their talents. That will be followed by a day of open talent from any of the children. The week will close with entire classes displaying their talents as specially trained groups. DAY 1: Humorous Joke Monologues by two older volunteer children. DAY 2: Lip Sync by a volunteer child. DAY 3: Magic Tricks by two volunteer children. DAY 4: Open Day for any volunteer children to perform their talents. DAY 5: Class Day. Beginning with day one each class will work on a short talent demonstration that they have prepared for the assembly. This could be a finger play, song, skit or whatever the teacher plans with the class. If you do not divide your children by classes choose to divide them by age levels or another grouping.

SNACKS Several yummy snack recipes are provided with this course. DECORATIONS AND COSTUMES There is also a helpful list of decoration ideas and dress suggestions for staff that will turn your campus into a great theater. YOUTH AND ADULTS Many churches today conduct their VBS in the evenings and thus prefer to include youth and adults in the lessons. A TINY BIT-O-TALENT includes lessons for these ages. The stories are designed to coordinate with the same lessons that the children learn for the day. TEMPLATES Please search through the files of Templates. Here you will find helpful forms for doorknob hangers (that are even typeable), bulletin inserts, posters, attendance charts, logos, etc. T-SHIRT DESIGNS You can make your own t-shirts by using the included designs and by purchasing the T-shirt Iron-on paper available at Kremer Publications. ( ) WEB IDEAS On this disk you will find a section that includes a church web site attachment. Feel free to place this attachment on your church web site advertising your VBS. Put a 9 x13 sheet of waxed paper down for your work surface. Label the work area with the student s name. 3. Cut out angel with cookie cutter. Take toothpicks and poke a hole in the top of the angel so you can insert a hanger. (Depending on the size of your template or cookie cutter you can also make holes for eyes and use a toothpick to draw a mouth.) Let this dry over the next few days until it is completely dry or bake in a 200 degree oven for about 2½ hours. 4. Attach the hanger ribbon. You will have a nice room deodorizer of applesauce and cinnamon.

Tie a knot. Next thread on the red bead that represents the blood that Jesus shed for us on the cross to forgive those sins. Tie a knot. The next bead is white representing the purity that we can now claim because we have been forgiven. Tie a knot. The blue bead is next, representing the Holy Spirit who works faith in our hearts that we might believe in our Savior Jesus Christ. Tie a knot. 10 DECORATIONS COSTUMES Remember that the theme of our Bible school is TALENT. We will certainly enjoy the excitement of a real talent show by the children, however; our main focus will be to share the Bible truth with the children that God has blessed us all with talents and abilities that we can use in service to the Lord Kremer Publications, Inc. 1

DECORATIONS In keeping with the theme, it is suggested to give your campus the feel of a theater including a stage to be used for the daily shows. Since Sylvester the Singing Star is our logo mascot, stars will make ideal decorations hanging throughout the hallways and classrooms. SYLVESTER THE STAR Sylvester is our logo mascot (see Sylvester at the top of this page.) He s a star for sure! Those who order the course CD will receive 12 free large Sylvester stars that can be displayed throughout the hallways and entrances of your Bible school. Additional sets can be purchased from Kremer Publications for $10.00/dozen stars. STAGE This course suggests that the full assembly meet at the beginning of each day for a devotion and a small talent show. If possible, build a stage at the front of your assembly room. Some thoughts to make the stage a special place: Streamers Star-shaped helium balloons on either side of the stage Fake (or real) microphone LED rope light across the stage front (or Christmas tree light strands) QUIET STUDIO sign above entryway Spotlight if possible 2

COSTUMES ANNOUNCER / MC You will need a Master of Ceremonies to read the devotions and announce the talent performers. A suggestion would be to have a man or woman dressed in a tuxedo. FACULTY / STAFF Your staff should be dressed as theater ushers wearing white shirts, vests, dark trousers, ties, and a name tag labeled usher. (Perhaps your church has some usher pins that could be used.) 3

SNACKS These snack suggestions are for your convenience. Feel free to use these or others of your own. The recipes are all made with simple ingredients in a relatively short amount of time Kremer Publications, Inc. 1

SNACKS Here are a number of snack ideas that you can use during your Tiny Bit-O- Talent week. (You might wish to discuss the use of peanuts and peanut butter for your children.) SERVING IDEA: In keeping with the theater theme, it is suggested you design your own theater snack counter where children line up for their snack treats. TABLES: If using tables to seat the children for snacks, cover the tables with tiny shiny stars, one large star per table, or a center piece of stars. STAR-SHAPED TREATS Serve a different star-shaped treat each day. Star-shaped cut-out cookies Star-shaped crispy treats Star-shaped Jell-o treats Star-shaped brownies Star-shaped white bread topped with a slice of star-shaped American cheese SANDWICH SUGGESTIONS PBC SANDWICH Mix peanut butter, cream cheese, and honey. Put between two slices of bread. PBJM SANDWICH Mix peanut butter, jelly, and marshmallow cream. Put between two slices of bread. PINWHEEL SANDWICH Mix peanut butter and honey and spread on flour tortilla. Sprinkle with granola and roll it up. THEATER POPCORN SUGGESTIONS (Make to proportion for larger group) CINNAMON-SUGAR POPCORN 1 T sugar 1 T brown sugar 1½ tsp cinnamon 3 T oil ½ cup popcorn kernels In a small bowl, combine sugars and cinnamon. Set aside. Immediately after popping corn, sprinkle with mixture. 2

DEVOTIONS NIV The devotions are designed to be used as an opening for each day of Bible school. Each devotion is followed with a brief talent show Kremer Publications, Inc.

IMPORTANT READ FIRST The opening devotions for A Tiny Bit-O-Talent reflect the theme of the course: Talent. Years ago TV viewers enjoyed sitting back with a bowl of popcorn watching Ted Mack s Original Amateur Hour on their black and white Motorola TVs. And what about amateur hours today? Some of the most watched TV programs are still those searching for people who have a special talent to share with the world. American Idol, You ve Got Talent, and other similar programs still top the rating s charts. A Tiny Bit-O-Talent is designed to show our children that God generously blesses each of us with talents. In our course, we will explore some of those talents through Bible characters who faithfully used their abilities to bring glory to God and to serve in his kingdom (Miriam, Ruth, Tabitha, Isaiah and Bezalel.) Each day will begin with a devotion followed by your own special TALENT SHOW! In addition to the devotion message that prepares the children for the day s lesson, there will be laughs and lots of fun taking place right on your own stage. Each assembly is presented by a specially chosen announcer MC who conducts the presentation. And where will we find the talent? Of course, from the children. The week will begin with a few specially chosen volunteers to display their talents. That will be followed by a day of open talent from any of the children. The week will close with entire classes displaying their talents as specially trained groups. Be certain to prepare for this well in advance of your Bible school. You can design your gathering room complete with a stage, chairs (for a panel of judges,) spotlights and microphones just like the real thing. (See the DECORATIONS file for more details.) The five days of talent are divided as follows: DAY 1: Devotion Humorous Joke Monologues by two older volunteer children. (At the beginning of the devotion the children will be ushered to another room for quick makeup and run through of the scripts.) Script is provided here. DAY 2: Devotion Lip Sync by a volunteer child. (At the beginning of the devotion the child is ushered to another room for a short rehearsal.) DAY 3: Devotion Magic Tricks by two volunteer children. (At the beginning of the devotion the children are ushered to another room to learn the trick.) Tricks are provided here.

DAY 4: Devotion Open Day for any volunteer children to perform their talents. (On the first day a note will be sent home telling parents that on day four children will have an opportunity to sing, tell a poem, dance, play an instrument, perform tricks with a pet, or whatever they would like to do. Children who do not wish to perform can opt out and be part of the applauding audience. Letter and form to be sent home follow this page.) DAY 5: Devotion Class Day. Beginning with the first day of school, each class works on a short talent demonstration that they prepare for the assembly. This could be a finger play, song, skit or whatever the teacher plans with the class. If you do not divide your children by classes, choose to divide them by age level or another grouping. JUDGES To continue to parallel with TV talent shows, have a panel of three adults seated at the front of the stage. Their comments should always be positive and grateful for the work the children did to perform. They can award each child with a star trophy. (Available at Kremer Publications.) On the last day each child who did not previously get a trophy gets one now. Print and distribute the following page to each family.

DAY 3 We use our talents to serve others. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16 Good morning and welcome to another day of talent and timely Bible lessons. We ve had a lot of fun thus far discussing the various talents we have and how they can be used. On the first day we learned that we all have different talents. Some may have the ability to be a good friend, while others might have a special ability to teach others. The second day we learned that whatever we do, we should work at it with all our heart. That means that we learn to use our talents to the fullest. We don t hide our talents but we use them in every way possible. Today we will learn something else about our talents. Using our talents shows others that we love Jesus. One day Jesus spoke to a large crowd of people who had gathered on a hillside. During that sermon, he talked to them about using the talents that the Lord had given to each of them. He compared his followers to lights. He said that all of God s children are like little lights all around the world. Jesus went on to say that if you have a bright light, you don t hide it under a box or cover it up. No, you put that light out in the open so that all may enjoy it. That way the light can give brightness to everything around it. And how can we be shining lights to those around us? Jesus was saying that we should take our talents and use them in such a way as to let everyone enjoy them. We shouldn t hide them or keep them from the world. Hiding them would be like placing a light under a box. No, we should use our light to benefit others. We should use our talents to help those around us. In doing so, they will understand that the actions we do, we do because we love the Lord. And we love the Lord because he first loved us. Jesus spent his entire ministry helping others. He taught them about sin and salvation. He healed their diseases, comforted their troubled souls, and even raised them from the dead. Jesus was the purest example of how to use our abilities to serve others. Why? Jesus served others because he loved them. And that s a very good reason why we should do it too. There are many ways we can use our abilities to serve those around us. We can pray for others, speak to them and become a friend to them making their days happy again. We can teach them about Jesus and his great love for them. These are all ways of letting our lights shine. They are all ways that we can use our abilities to help others. And your shining light will reflect that you are doing it because you love the Lord. Did you tell your mom or dad about class yesterday? Then you were letting your light shine. Did you tell a friend that you were going to Bible school? That s letting your light shine, too. Have you had a chance to sing a Bible song you learned to your relatives or friends? There again you let your light shine. Did you take a moment to pray for your family or friends, or even strangers? There you were using your talents to serve others once again. It s easy, and it s fun letting our lights shine for everyone around us. In our classroom story today we will learn about someone who also let her light shine by being a true friend. Prayer: Dear Jesus, my best and closest friend, you have made each of us shining lights to show the way to heaven to everyone around us. Be with us as we shine and shine and shine. I will sincerely try to keep my light shining and not hide it in a closet because I am ashamed of it. Thank you Jesus, the Light of the world. Amen. But first, we have some more performers waiting back stage to thrill us with their magical talents. Let s welcome these two amateur magicians to our Bible school: and.

DAY 3 SCRIPT AND DIRECTIONS FOR MAGICIANS Have the judges take their places. First student and trick: You will need strip of white paper 11 x4¼, a black marker, and two large paper clips. Student one: (Reads) Hello. My name is and I have been asked to use my tiny magical talent to perform a truly magic trick right before your eyes. I am going to show how our faith attaches us to Jesus. First I am going to take this blank slip of paper and write on it the word FAITH. Next I will take this large paperclip and call it the Jesus clip. I will attach it to the top of the piece of paper. Now I will take another clip and give this clip my name,. I will also attach it to the top of the paper. Now watch carefully what faith does between Jesus and me as I slowly pull the two sides apart. (The two clips will attach to each other. Show attached clips to the assembly.) Now I am attached to Jesus! Thank you!

Second student and trick: You will need a flat work surface; 6 sheets of newspaper and a good pair of scissors. Student two: (Reads) Good morning. My name is, and I am about to show you how a few talents can grow and grow and grow. I am going begin by taking 6 sheets of newspaper. Now I am going to roll them up tightly one by one to form a tight roll. (Begin by tightly rolling the first sheet the short way. When you get about 2/3 the way rolled up, insert the next sheet so you can continue to roll. Roll the second sheet into the first until you get about 2/3 the way and insert the next sheet, and so on. Continue rolling until all the sheets are rolled up into one tight tube.) Now I am going to take this scissors and cut four slits from the top down. (Proceed to cut by inserting the scissors into the end of the tube and cut down the tube to about halfway down. Do the same with three more cuts on the quarter hour.) Now I will put the scissors down and reach into the end of my talent tube. (Begin by pulling the innermost sheet. Continue to pull and pull and pull as a long tree begins to emerge.) Notice what is happening to the talent I began with. It started as one talent tube and now it s grown and grown into something amazing! Thank you! Judges critique magic tricks and hand out awards.
