2 Q1 AP Lit & Lang Week 6 Connections List title and author of work What does your independent reading remind you of? Why? Pick one passages and copy it down, word for word Tell how the passage relates to your personal knowledge regarding: (PICK ONLY 1) personal experience other texts the world (history, current events)

3 You re only completing ONE of these! Week 6 Examples Personal Experience Other Texts History, Current Events by Anthony Doerr, p. 45 by Anthony Doerr, p. 40 by Anthony Doerr, p. 113 [Marie] has no memories of her mother but imagines her as a white, a soundless brilliance. This passage connected to my own experiences as my mother died when I was too young to recall her voice. I have seen pictures, but there is no sound memory. The words white and brilliance also relate to my momconcept in that I have set her up as a perfect being in my mind one who would have made all my life experiences better and more beautiful. [Marie] realizes that, for the first time since they began this exercise, dread has not come trundling up from her gut Two other protagonists from my favorite novels, Francine from A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and Britt-Marie from Britt- Marie Was Here, must also overcome psychological challenges. Britt-Marie s OCD emerges as she struggles with the aftermath of her sister s death and Francine is emotionally abandoned following her father s death. [Jutta s] eyes said, You are betraying me, but wasn t he protecting her? Werner did want to protect his sister but he did it by following the Nazi party dictates for limiting radio transmissions to German broadcasts. Outside perspectives were his sister s lifeline. The current attacks on media as false and the presence of alternate facts coupled with a desire for blind obedience mimic the patterns of the pre-ww2 Hitler era.

4 Q1 AP Lit & Lang Week 8 Evidence List title and author of work A work of literary merit is characterized by many of the following attributes: 1) Broadens, deepens and sharpens our awareness of life by taking readers deeper into the real world 2) May increase pleasure or understanding of the world outside our own experiences 3) Illuminates some aspect of human life or behavior by providing an insight large or small into the nature and condition of our existence. 4) For characters, success is less common than failure 5) Resonates truth and leads to contemplation 6) May have an indeterminate ending no conclusion reached 7) Characterized by artistic unity, no irrelevancies; all aspects contribute to meaning Using these criteria, evaluate the quality of the book that you are reading by citing specific examples (paraphrase, summarize) or quotes from the text. Address three of the seven points in writing and pick one of these three points to present aloud to the class

5 Q1 AP Lit & Lang Week 10: The Character Obituary Write an obituary for one of the characters in the book.
