Discouragement comes when what we see doesn t match up to what God says. Joshua 6:1-2 NIV 1 Now the gates of Jericho were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in. 2 Then the Lord said to Joshua, See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. Does what you see contradict the promises you believe God has spoken over your life? 2. Discouragement comes when what we ve tried hasn t produced the desired results. How hard is it to stay encouraged when you don t see any change? I have had more trouble with myself than with any other man. - Evangelist Dwight L. Moody Romans 7:15, NIV 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do this I keep on doing. How do we combat our discouragement? 1a) Face the facts without losing our faith. Psalms 73:13 NIV 13 Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence. Psalms 73:25-27 NIV 25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. 27 Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you. Romans 4:19-21 NASB 19 Without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah s womb; 20 yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God, 21 and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to perform. 2a) Learn to encourage yourself from within 1 Samuel 30:6 ESV 6 And David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because all the people were bitter in soul, each for his sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God. Psalm 73:28 NIV 28 But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds. Can we find room to express gratitude in our discouragement? 3a) Don t quit on six If there s something God has spoken in your life and you re not seeing it come to pass right now, don t quit on six. You might be closer to seven than you know. Joshua 6:15-16 NIV 15 On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times. 16 The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, Shout! For the Lord has given you the city! Joshua 6:20 NIV 20 When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city. My struggle is a sign that I haven t been conquered yet.
