His Birth MATTHEW 1 ST CHAPTER 00.) There are generations from to 01.) There are generations from to 02.) There are generations from to 03.) There are Generations from the Promise of the coming of the Messiah to the fulfillment of His coming. But what is a generation? GENERATION = The translation from Hebrew means "circle," "age," "period," or "cycle". 1

2 04.) Hence; when studying Scripture, it is important to remember that the word can mean several different things: a. In Genesis 2:4, the word generations means the " " b. In Genesis 5:1 "The book of the generations," means a family register, or history of Adam. c. In Genesis 37:2, "The generations of Jacob" means the history of Jacob and his descendants. d. In Matthew 1:17 the word means a succession or series of persons from the same stock. e. In the time of Abraham a generation was an hundred years: Compare Genesis 15:13 & 15:16, "In the fourth generation" = in four hundred years. f. In Deuteronomy 1:35 and Deuteronomy 2:14 a generation is a period of thirty-eight years. 05.) Biblical generations are approximated as some generations were in recording if they did something bad. LUKE 1 ST CHAPTER 06.) Elisabeth was and could not have children. 07.) Both Elisabeth and Zacharias were too to have children. 08.) Zacharias was to have a child. 09.) Zacharias did not Gabriel. Nazarite Hebrew The name of such Israelites as took on them the vow prescribed in Numbers 6:2-21. The word denotes generally one who is separated from others and consecrated to God. Although there is no mention of any Nazarite before Samson, yet it is evident that they existed before the time of Moses. The vow of a Nazarite involved these three things, (1) abstinence from wine and strong drink, (2) refraining from cutting the hair off the head during the whole period of the continuance of the vow, and (3) the avoidance of contact with the dead. When the period of the continuance of the vow came to an end, the Nazarite had to present himself at the door of the sanctuary with (1) a he lamb of the first year for a burnt-offering, (2) a ewe lamb of the first year for a sin-offering, and (3) a ram for a peaceoffering. After these sacrifices were offered by the priest, the Nazarite cut off his hair at the door and threw it into the fire under the peace-offering. As to the duration of a Nazarite's vow, every one was left at liberty to fix his own time. There is mention made in Scripture of only three who were Nazarites for life, Samson, Samuel, and John the Baptist (Judges 13:4, 5; 1 Samuel 1:11; Luke 1:15). In its ordinary form, however, the Nazarite's vow lasted only thirty, and at most one hundred, days. 13.) Zacharias was struck for not believing. 14.) To distinguish him from others so called, he is spoken of as "Jesus of Nazareth" (John 18:7), and "Jesus the son of Joseph" (John 6:42). This is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua, which was originally Hoshea (Numbers 13:8, 16), but changed by Moses into Jehoshua (Numbers 13:16; 1 Chronicles 7:27), or Joshua. After the Exile it assumed the form Jeshua, whence the Greek form Jesus. It was given to our Lord to denote the object of his mission, to save (Matthew 1:21). 29.) Systematic Theology would teach us that Joseph and Mary were obviously born in since that is the city they went to, to pay their taxes. 34.) What does mean? BETROTH To promise "by one's truth." Men and women were betrothed when they were engaged to be married. This usually took place a year or more before marriage. From the time of betrothal the woman was regarded as the lawful wife of the man to whom she was betrothed (Deuteronomy 28:30; Judge 14:2, 8; Mat 1:18-21). The term is figuratively employed of the spiritual connection between God and his people (Hosea 2:19, 20). 35.) What is a? (Luke 2:7) 36.) How many Shepherds were in the field? 37.) The Shepherds were told what to look for so they would know that they have found the right baby. He would be wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a Manger. This had to sound very, very strange to the Shepherds because they knew that a manager was a feeding trough for animals, and why would anyone lay their new born baby in an animal feeding trough? 38.) The Shepherds came with to Mary and Joseph and found things as the Angel said they would be. 39.) How many Wise Men came to see the newborn Jesus, wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in the manger? To Be Continued MANGER man'-jer (Greek [phatne]): Properly the place in a stall or stable where the food of cattle is placed (in the Old Testament "crib" (Job 39:9; Proverbs 14:4; Isaiah 1:3). In Septuagint, the Greek word, representing different Hebrew words, has also the extended meaning of "stall" (2 Chronicles 32:28; Habakkuk 3:17); thus also in Luke 13:15. Old tradition says that Jesus was born in a cave in the neighborhood of Bethlehem; even so, a place for food for cattle may have been cut in the side of the rock. 4

5 FRANKINCENSE - an odorous resin imported from Arabia. It was one of the ingredients in the perfume of the sanctuary used for the purpose of sacrificial fumigation. When burnt, it burned for a long time with a steady flame and it emitted a fragrant odour, and hence the incense became a symbol of the Divine name and an emblem of prayer. It was called frank because of the freeness with which, when burned, it gives forth its odor. MYRRH - This substance was valuable for its perfume and as one of the constituents of the holy incense. It was used a medicine as well as embalming anointment. The fragrant resin obtained from some species of cistus plant was a principal ingredient in the holy anointing oil. It was used in embalming, also as a perfume. It was a custom of the Jews to give those who were condemned to death by crucifixion "wine mingled with myrrh" to produce insensibility. GOLD, FRANKINCENSE, MYRRH - Some will have these gifts to be emblematic of the Divinity, regal office, and manhood of Christ. "They offered him incense as their God; gold as their king; and myrrh, as united to a human body, subject to suffering and death." Aurum, thus, myrrham, regique, DEO, HOMINIQUE, dona ferunt. JUVENCUS. Rather, they offered him the things which were in most esteem among themselves; and which were productions of their own country. The gold was probably a very providential supply, as on it, it is likely, they subsisted while in Egypt. MATTHEW 2 ND CHAPTER 40.) The wise men came from the to Jerusalem. 41.)
