1 The Lord Himself will give you a sign 18 th Dec 2016 (Isaiah 7:14; Micah 5:2 & Luke 2:1-17 And more ) Please have your Bibles handy we re going to be looking at several passages You can take down some notes if that helps in the outline provided Let me pray first Intro/Prophecy So today we re going to look at prophecy. So it would be handy to have a definition of prophecy wouldn t it? [Powerpoint 1 Prophecy definition] Prophecy is: A prediction of what will happen in the future Predicting the future can be tricky can t it? Take for example weather forecasts not very accurate are they? Even in the last few months we ve had a couple of prediction go wrong Everyone predicted Great Britain would stay in the European Community whoops that went wrong and we ended up with BREXIT Then everyone predicted Hilary Clinton would be the next US president whoops that went wrong and we ended up with Donald Trump Page 1 of 11

Maybe that s why Danish physicist, Niels Bohr famously said: Prediction is a 2 very difficult art especially when it involves the future! (pause) If you think about it we spend a lot of time thinking about what will happen in the future We ve spent a fair bit of time at church this year planning a Vision for the future and we ve asked ourselves what will our church be like in the year 2030? Really we have no idea - do we? Jesus might come back before then? And if we re not careful as we look to the future we start looking for signs from God to help us gauge whether our predictions for the future are accurate Perhaps that s why you often see signs like this: [Powerpoint 2 Church Sign] But there really is ONLY ONE who knows the future There s ONLY ONE who is in control of all things And that s God Page 2 of 11

And throughout His Holy Word He gives signs and prophecies for the future 3 and He uses selected Godly people in the Bible to speak these prophecies and write them down - they are called prophets And the difference between God s predictions for the future and ours is that God s predictions and prophecies are true, accurate and can be relied upon not like ours So as we approach Christmas Day next Sunday We re going to take a look at 10 prophecies from the Old Testament (all written before Jesus was born) 10 prophecies about the birth of Jesus - and we ll see how they are fulfilled in the New Testaments Then we ll draw some conclusions and I ll leave us all with a challenge So here we go 1. Prophecy #1 - Jesus will come from Abraham s family tree [Powerpoint 3 Prophecy #1] About 1900BC - God spoke to Abraham in Genesis 12:3 and promised that all people on earth would be blessed through Abraham Then in Matthew 1:1 when we read the family tree of Jesus we see that Jesus is a descendant of Abraham and the promise is true that all people Page 3 of 11

on this earth can be blessed through one of Abraham s descendants. All 4 people can be blessed by Jesus if they choose to believe in who He is! The Son of God, God s chosen One sent to save people from their sin and rebellion against God 2. Prophecy #2 Jesus mother will be a virgin [Powerpoint 4 Prophecy #2] God spoke through the prophet Isaiah in 7:14, about 700BC and said He will give a sign [there s those signs we were talking about] a sign that a virgin will give birth to a Son. This is a miraculous sign, because a virgin cannot through earthly means give birth to a baby; so it has to be a sign and a miracle from God. Then we read in Mathew 1:18 that Mary became pregnant through the Holy Spirit and not through her husband to be Joseph. And this is very very important, because it means the baby to be born, is from God and in fact, as the name Immanuel suggests, the baby is actually God with skin on and is God with us 3. Prophecy #3 Jesus will be a descendant of Isaac (Abraham s son) and a descendant of Jacob (Isaac s son) [Powerpoint 5-Prophecy #3] In Genesis 17:19 God spoke to Abraham and said He was making an everlasting covenant (agreement) with Abraham and with Abraham s descendants. Abraham s son was Isaac, and Isaac s son was Jacob and in Page 4 of 11

Numbers 24:17 a prophet named Balaam spoke of a star coming from 5 Jacob and a scepter from Israel. This is a beautiful prophecy of Jesus, the Messiah. Jesus is as glorious as a star (remember He is the light of the world) and the scepter (a symbol of kingly rule) shows that He has the authority to rule, as the King of Kings. When we read Matthew 1:1-2 and look at Jesus family tree, Jesus is a descendant of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob 4. Prophecy #4 Jesus will be born in the town of Bethlehem. [Powerpoint 6-Prophecy #4] God spoke through another prophet called Micah, about 700 BC and said that a ruler of Israel would come out of the town of Bethlehem even though Judah is one of the smallest tribes of the 12 tribes of Israel. When we read the story of Jesus birth in Luke chapter 2 we see that it just so happened that Joseph and Mary, have to leave Nazareth and go up to Bethlehem because there is a census of the whole of the Roman Empire, and whilst the couple are in Bethlehem, baby Jesus is born! It s not a coincidence God planned it that way! 5. Prophecy #5 Jesus will be called out of Egypt. [Powerpoint 7-Prophecy #5] About 750BC God spoke through another prophet called Hosea, in Hosea 11:1 and God remembered His tender love for Israel and refers to Israel Page 5 of 11

lovingly as a child, and God remembered when more than 500 years before 6 the time of Hosea that He brought the people of Israel out of slavery in Egypt. But the rest of the verse, says that God calls His Son, out of Egypt. This calling His Son out of Egypt is fulfilled, in Matthew 2:13-15; when Jesus father, Joseph, is warned to take Mary and baby Jesus to Egypt, because wicked King Herod is searching to kill baby Jesus. Only when King Herod dies, does God call His Son out of Egypt to return to Israel again 6. Prophecy #6 Jesus will be a member of the tribe of Judah. [Powerpoint 8-Prophecy #6] When the OT patriarch Jacob blessed his 12 sons (who became the 12 tribes of Israel) before he died, he promised his son Judah, that the scepter (a symbol of Kingly rule) would not leave the tribe of Judah until He to whom it the scepter belonged came (Gen 49:10). Then in Jesus family tree recorded in Luke Gospel, chapter 3, verse 33-we see that Jesus is a descendant of Judah, the son of Jacob. [And please note that there are 2 different family trees of Jesus written in Matthew and Luke s gospels. The explanation for this is that the family tree in Luke s Gospel is using Mary s family tree to lead to Jesus and the family tree in Matthew is using Joseph s family tree to lead to Jesus] 7. Prophecy #7 Jesus will enter His temple. [Powerpoint 9-Prophecy #7 Page 6 of 11

About 450BC God spoke through another prophet called Malachi and said 7 in Malachi 3:1 that He would send a messenger to prepare the way that messenger was John the Baptist and then God said through Malachi that suddenly the Lord will come to His temple. This finds it s fulfilment in Luke chapter 2 when an ageing righteous man called Simeon was moved by the Holy Spirit to enter the temple just as Mary and Joseph brought the Lord, baby Jesus, into the temple to present Him to the Lord and give thanks for the baby! It s important that this was fulfilled at Jesus birth, as the temple was completely destroyed in AD70 8. Prophecy #8 Jesus will be from King David s Family Tree. [Powerpoint 10-Prophecy #8] About 600BC God spoke through the prophet, Jeremiah, in Jeremiah 23:5 (which we looked at last week) and God said He would raise up a descendant of King David, who would be like a righteous branch of King David s family tree. This was fulfilled in Matthew chapter 1 when we look at Jesus family tree, and see that Jesus belongs to King David s family tree 9. Prophecy #9 The birth of Jesus will be accompanied with great suffering and sorrow. [Powerpoint 11-Prophecy #9] The prophet Jeremiah in 31:15 prophesied about Rachel (the wife of Jacob the father of Israel) Jeremiah prophesied that Rachel would be weeping for her children something she did all her life as she pinned for children (Gen Page 7 of 11

30:1) and she died in sorrow when she gave birth to Benjamin and Rachel as 8 was buried in Raman near Bethlehem (Gen 35:18-19). But here in Jeremiah s prophecy she is shown as rising from her tomb and weeping over her descendants the children of Bethlehem. This was fulfilled in Matthew 2:16-17 when King Herod, having been outsmarted by the Wise Men who didn t return to Him with the location of Jesus so King Herod gave orders to kill all baby boys two years old and under - in the region of Bethlehem 10. Prophecy #10 Jesus will live a perfect life, die by crucifixion, resurrect from the dead, ascend to Heaven and sit at God s right hand [Powerpoint 12-Prophecy #10] Now Jesus did live a perfect and sinless life Isaiah 53:9 says Jesus was without sin as does 2 Peter 2:22 in the NT In Psalm 22:16-it says about Jesus that they pierced his hands and feet which is crucifixion and this is fulfilled in Luke 23:33 when Jesus is crucified Psalm 16:10-says about Jesus that he will not be abandoned to the realm of the dead this is fulfilled at Jesus resurrection and described in Acts 2:25-32) Psalm 68:18 mentions that when Jesus ascends on high, he will take many captives fulfilled in Ephesians 4:8. And Acts 1:9 records Jesus actual ascension into Heaven. When Jesus ascended to Heaven, He assured a place for all those Page 8 of 11

who have been taken captive by their sin but now had their sin s removed and 9 forgiven by Jesus because of their belief in Him as their saviour In Psalm 110:1 King David describes how God said to Him, that Jesus was sitting at the right-hand of God himself. This was fulfilled in Hebrews 1:3 where it says: after He (Jesus) had provided purification of sin, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in Heaven SO there we have 10 prophecies from God that find their fulfilment in the birth of our Lord Jesus What can we take home from that today? Application [Powerpoint 13a-App1] 1) Firstly in this 10 prophecies we see that - the God who wrote the Scriptures rules over all history and intervenes as He sees fit - to achieve His purposes and plans [Powerpoint 13b-App2 2) Secondly unlike our predictions for the future and unlike our promises that we make God s predictions and promises are always true - because the Word of God is always true! [Powerpoint 13c-App3 Page 9 of 11

3) Thirdly the fulfilment of these 10 prophecies - gives us all hope for the 10 future we can be certain that all of God s future promises that haven t been fulfilled yet will also prove to be true. Promises and prophecies a. Like Jesus returning one day b. Like the judgment we all have to face one day c. Like the promise of Eternal Life for those who believe in Jesus d. Like the assurance of Heaven for those who believe in Jesus All these promises are guaranteed to be true Conclusion/Challenge There s one big conclusion we can make from all of this and it comes from Jesus himself After Jesus rose from the dead [Powerpoint 14a-Conclusion] He appeared to two disciples on the road to Emmaus And Jesus explained to them something really important about Himself and the Bible He told them that everything written in the Bible was written about Him (Luke 24:27) So my challenge to us all today is: As you read the Bible see if you can find Jesus For example: Page 10 of 11

Joseph in Egypt saved his people from slavery - like Jesus saves us from 11 slavery of sin Esther saved her people from a death sentence like Jesus save us from sin and death Joshua led God s people to the Promised Land like Jesus leads us to our Promised Land in Heaven You see God Himself has given us sign(s) They are all in His Good Book the Bible That s why Christmas is so exciting it s the start of all God s Promises and signs being fulfilled in baby Jesus Immanuel God with us O Come O Come Emmanuel Let s pray Page 11 of 11
