2 Bible Bowl Bible Bowl Guidelines The Bible Bowl competition will take place on Tuesday night, July 18, 2017 at 7:00 pm at the New Era Convention Chapel in Griffin, Georgia. This year s Bible Bowl study will cover the prophetic book of the twelve minor prophets, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi. The purpose of the Bible Bowl extends past the challenge and competiveness we experience among the different churches on the night of competition. We encourage our youth to gain an understanding of the Word of God by being diligent in studying to show themselves approved unto God as a worker who is not ashamed and able to rightly divide the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). We invite Bible Bowl Alumni to participate in the competition using the same guidelines and preparation. Please your confirmation to participate to tstalls@bellsouth.net by March 31, 2017 Preparation: We encourage the delegate to: Read and study the sixty-seven (67) chapters written by the twelve minor prophets and seek to gain an understanding of what is taking place in scripture. Take notes as you read through each chapter and develop your own review/study questions. Answer the bible bowl questions that will be provided based on what you have learned in your time of study (see schedule on page 5 of this package). Summary of Minor Prophets The book of the minor prophets reveals the heart of God in different ways expressed by the writer. God s love, His anger, wrath, judgment and His mercy is portrayed through the message of these twelve men, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi. 2

3 Hosea whose name means Salvation prophesied during the reign of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah Kings of Judah and Jeroboam, King of Israel. Hosea s personal trials and broken heartedness is symbolic of the spiritual idolatry of Israel and the broken heart of God in dealing with a sinful nation. Hosea s experience with his unfaithful wife portrayed Israel s rejection of the Lord and his recovery of his wife is a picture of the Lord s love and restoration of Israel. God s love for Israel in spite of her idolatry and infidelity is a call to repentance to the nation. Joel was a prophet of Judah who prophesied during the reign of King Joash, the coming judgments upon Judah for their sin. The book highlights the events of the invasion of locusts followed by famine, the outpouring of the Spirit and the coming day of the Lord. His exhortation to Judah to repent and turn their hearts to the Lord is characterized by his warning to blow the trumpet in Zion, consecrate a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly and gather the people to come before the Lord. Amos a shepherd ( a keeper) of Tekoa, whose name means burden bearer, prophesied with great boldness against the stronghold of Satan at Bethel which is said to be the seat of idolatry in the northern kingdom. He prophesied in the days of Uzziah, king of Israel and Jeroboam, son of Joash, king of Judah. His prophecy was to awaken Israel and the surrounding nations that they were both responsible and accountable for their sins. He pronounced judgment on the enemies of Israel before he delivered judgment on Israel herself. Obadiah, a servant and worshipper of the Lord who prophesied God s judgment upon Edom because of their pride and the wrong done toward his brother Jacob. Jonah whose name means dove prophesied during the reign of Jeroboam II. He was called by God to go and preach to Nineveh who at first sought to hide himself in disobedience. Jonah s prophesy is a demonstration of God mercy as it shows the sovereignty of God at work in the life of the prophet and his concern for a heathen nation. Micah, meaning who is like the Lord, prophesied during the reign of Judah s kings, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah. Micah s prophecy outlines sin, judgment and restoration while seeking to bring the people to face their sins. Micah prophesies God s judgment on the people because of their persistent sinning. His prophecy provides accurate details of the fulfillment of prophecy of Jesus birth in Bethlehem Ephratah.

4 Bible Bowl 2017 Nahum meaning compassionate or full of comfort, delivered a message of judgment and destruction against Nineveh and a message of comfort to Judah of the promise of its future deliverance. Habakkuk meaning embracer, wrestled with God on behalf of the people. His love for the people complimented his role as watchman for certainly he stood watch over them. He prophesied to Judah the impending invasion of the Chaldeans and he comforted them with his message of the ultimate destruction of Chaldea. Zephaniah is a book of contrasts and his prophecy sets forth what the day of the Lord will mean to Judah, world powers and the remnant. Zephaniah, meaning God hides or protects was the great grandson of Hezekiah who prophesied during the reign of King Josiah. Haggai was the first of the prophets to minister to Israel after their return from Babylonian captivity. The book of Haggai contains four messages from God delivered ten years after the rebuilding of the temple had ceased. These messages were to rebuke the people for the delays and encourage them to resume the rebuilding of the temple. Zechariah meaning the Lord remembers was the great, great grandson of Hezekiah. He was a priest and a prophet whose message encouraged the people to complete the rebuilding of the temple. Zechariah announced God s prophetic plan for the Gentiles, predicted the blessings of the millennial age for Israel and outlined the events leading up to it. Malachi meaning my messenger delivered strong rebukes to the people and priests, called them to repentance and promised future blessings of the Lord. Malachi s message was of God s love for Israel in spite of the sins of the priests and the people. May you be encouraged and strengthened in faith and service as you study the book of minor prophets, men with an impactful and powerful message. 4
