2 Bible Bowl Bible Bowl Guidelines The Bible Bowl competition will take place on Tuesday night, July 19, 2016 at 7:00 pm at the New Era Convention Chapel in Griffin, Georgia. This year s Bible Bowl study will cover the Book of Isaiah. The purpose of the Bible Bowl extends past the challenge and competiveness we experience among the different churches on the night of competition. We strive to encourage our youth to gain an understanding of the Word of God by being diligent in studying to show themselves approved unto God a worker who does not need to be ashamed able to rightly divide the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). Preparation: We encourage the delegate to: Study each chapter of the sixty-six (66) chapters of Isaiah and gain an understanding of what is taking place in scripture. Take notes as you read through each chapter and develop your own review/study questions. Answer the bible bowl questions that will be provided based on what you have learned in your time of study (see schedule on page 4 of this package). Summary Outline Isaiah is regarded as the greatest of the Old Testament prophets primarily because of his message of redemption, the depth of his writing of the future and the literary merit of the book. The book of Isaiah can be divided into two major sections, chapters 1-39 which capture events leading up to the captivity with the emphasis being judgment and chapters emphasize comfort and salvation. Isaiah the son of Amoz prophesied during the last seventeen years of the Northern Kingdom. His message however was mostly to the Southern Kingdom. Isaiah ministered for at least fifty-eight (58) years prophesying during the reigns of four Kings of Judah, Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah. The history of the period in which Isaiah ministered is found in 2 Kings His name meaning The Lord is Salvation is evident throughout his prophetic ministry in which he described the scenes he saw in his mind in visions by painting a word picture of the scene, keeping this in mind as you 2

3 study the book will be helpful in understanding his language. Isaiah s ministry occurred at a critical time in Judah s history when the Assyrian power was rising and two groups appeared within the nation where one sought alliance with Egypt and the other sought alliance with Syria. Isaiah, however forbade human alliances and urged trust in God. Isaiah was stern and uncompromising when necessary yet he had a tender heart. He warned of judgment because he loved his people. He spoke in simplicity showing the people how they looked in God s sight. Isaiah, a man of great spirituality and strong faith was bold, fearless and of upmost sincerity. His call and commission came through a vision where he fell in a trance while awake and he saw visible scenes with the mind s eye which caused him to declare woe is me and proceed as a dedicated servant of the Lord who had no room for worldliness and doubt. He saw men and things from God s perspective in the light of eternity. Each person that comes to the saving and serving knowledge of Christ will have a woe is me moment, a place of change, a commitment to the Lord and of serving your God given purpose. May you be encouraged and strengthened in faith and service as you study the book of Isaiah.
