Jesus Tells About the Good Samaritan Lesson 12 Bible Point We can help others who are hurt. Bible Verse Work as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people (Ephesians 6:7). Growing Closer to Jesus Children will n act out the good Samaritan story, n find out that helping is a way to show they care, n teach Pockets that anyone can help, and n discover ways to help others when they re hurt or sick. Teacher Enrichment Bible Basis n Jesus tells about the good Samaritan. Luke 10:25-37 Jesus told the story about the good Samaritan in response to a question from a Jewish teacher. The story begins with a man s trip from Jerusalem to Jericho, which was about 17 miles and included a descent of over 3,000 feet. The rocky terrain provided many places for bandits to hide and ambush solitary travelers. In the story, the man was attacked by robbers and left for dead while on his journey. Since Jesus was speaking to a Jewish audience, the assumption would have been that the man was a Jew. The identities of the three who came along after the man had been robbed and beaten are significant. The first, a priest, was considered to be a representative of God. A parallel today might be a pastor someone who is involved in committed service to God. The second to come by was a Levite. This was someone who assisted the priest, still a spiritual person but in a layperson s role. And the last one, a Samaritan, was despised by Jews because of his heritage. Only the Samaritan stopped to help. Not only did the Samaritan bind up the man s wounds, transport him to a place of safety, and take care of him there, but he also made sure the man would be taken care of as he healed. The two silver coins the Samaritan gave to the innkeeper were significant in value: They would have been worth about two days wages. That was likely enough to pay for lodging at an inn for several weeks. Not only that, but the Samaritan promised to stop by on his return trip and take care of any additional expenses incurred. Having told this story in response to the question about who we were responsible to love as our neighbors, Jesus returned to the question after the parable, but turned it around. Rather than asking to whom we re responsible as neighbors, Jesus asked who had been a good neighbor. Prayer Read Luke 10:27. How are the children in your classroom your neighbors? Dear God, help me to reach out to these children as you would have me reach out to my neighbors Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6 157

Jesus Tells About the Good Samaritan Welcome Time SUPPLIES: Perfect Present Name Tags (p. 22), markers, safety pins or tape Bend down and make eye contact with children as they arrive. Greet each child individually with an enthusiastic smile. Thank each child for coming to class today. As children arrive, ask them how they put last week s lesson into practice. Use questions such as Did you forgive anyone last week? and How did it feel when someone forgave you? Say: Today we re going to learn that we can help others who are hurt. Hand out the present name tags children made during Lesson 1, and help children attach name tags to their clothing. If any of the name tags were damaged or if children weren t in class that week, have children make new name tags using the photocopiable patterns. Direct children to the Let s Get Started activities you ve set up. Let s Get Started Set up one or more of the following activities for children to do as they arrive. After you greet each child, invite him or her to choose an activity. Circulate among the children to offer help as needed and to direct their conversation toward today s lesson. Ask questions such as How does it feel when someone helps you? or Is it easy for you to ask for help? n Option 1: Hospital Helpers SUPPLIES: toy doctor kit, stethoscope, white cloth strips, blankets, pillows, white shirts Set up a play hospital in one corner of the room. Use chairs for the waiting room area, or slide two chairs together to make a bed. Provide blankets, pillows, and a variety of interesting medical equipment such as a toy hammer for checking reflexes, a stethoscope (real or toy), white shirts to wear as doctors and nurses coats, and white cloth strips to use as bandages. Encourage children to play cooperatively and take turns being the patients, doctors, and nurses. Point out that girls can be doctors just as boys can be nurses. As children play, circulate and make comments such as It s good that we can help others who are hurt or sick and I like how gentle you are with your patient s hurt arm. Tell children that today they ll hear a story about someone who was injured and needed help. Young children enjoy realistic role-playing. Providing realistic props adds fun, but steer clear of letting children administer pretend medicine or candies to their patients. Medicine should never be thought of as candy. Teach children to be careful with medicines and that medicine is made to help them get well, not to taste like candy. Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6 159

Lesson 12 n Option 2: No-Hands Helpers SUPPLIES: cotton balls, bowl Scatter several cotton balls on the floor, and place a bowl at one end of the room. Give each child a set of chopsticks. Demonstrate how to use the chopsticks the traditional way with just one hand. If the children have a hard time, allow them to take a stick and each hand. Have children use either method to transport all of the cotton balls to the bowl. While children play, explain that today they ll hear a Bible story about a man who gently picked up a hurt stranger. Tell children that we can help others who are hurt. Be sure to return the chopsticks to the Learning Lab. n Option 3: Stethoscopes SUPPLIES: cardboard tubes, yarn, hole punch, scissors Before class, cut an 18-inch length of yarn for each child. Place on a table the yarn, a hole punch, and a 2-inch section of cardboard tube for each child. Have children each punch two holes on opposite sides of a tube. Help children thread yarn through the holes and tie the ends of the yarn together. Let children slip the yarn over their heads and place the tubes up to their ears. Encourage children to find partners and listen to each other s heartbeats. As children listen, tell them that hearts beat to help us stay alive and that hearts also feel love for others. Remind the children that we can help others who are hurt because we care for them. Tell children you ll share a story about a man who loved others enough to help someone who was hurt and alone. After everyone has arrived and you re ready to move on to the Bible Story Time, encourage the children to finish what they re doing and get ready to clean up. At this stage in their social development, 5- and 6-yearolds are learning to share and cooperate, can understand and follow rules, enjoy extensive dramatic play, and are eager to please teachers and parents. n Pick Up Our Toys SUPPLIES: CD player Lead children in singing Pick Up Our Toys (track 2) with the track 2 CD to the tune of Skip to My Lou. Encourage children to sing along as they help clean up the room. If you want to include the names of all the children in the class, sing the song without the CD, and repeat the naming section. If you choose to use the CD, vary the names you use each week. We will pick up our toys. We will pick up our toys. We will pick up our toys, And put them all away. (Repeat.) There s [name] picking up toys. There s [name] picking up toys. There s [name] picking up toys, Putting them all away. 160 Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6

Jesus Tells About the Good Samaritan Bible Story Time n Setting the Stage SUPPLIES: masking tape, heart cut from construction paper, scissors Tell children you ll clap your hands to get their attention. Explain that when you clap, children are to stop what they re doing, raise their hands, and focus on you. Encourage children to respond quickly so you ll have time for all the fun activities you ve planned. Hand each child two pieces of masking tape approximately 3 inches long. Say: Each of you has two pretend bandages for a game of Tag. When I say go, walk heel-to-toe, sticking a bandage on each person you tag. You can t stick both of your bandages on the same person. If you re tagged with two bandages, sit down where you are. We ll play until there s one person left untagged. After you ve finished playing, gather children in a circle. Ask: Who can tell about a time you were hurt and someone helped you, or a time you helped someone who was hurt? Allow time for children to share their stories. Then ask: What was it like to help someone who needed help? (It felt good; it made me feel happy; I felt proud.) Who can help people who are hurt? (Doctors and nurses; hospitals; me; anyone.) Remind children to stick the tape onto other children s clothing and not to get the tape in anyone s hair. Why does Jesus want us to help others? (Because Jesus loves everyone; because we might need help sometime; because Jesus helped others.) Say: When we help others, we re showing them Jesus love. Let s thank Jesus for his love, and ask him to help us show that love to others. Show children the paper heart. As you pray, take a strip of masking tape from the game and put that pretend bandage on the heart. Pray: Dear Jesus, thank you that you love me. Help me to show your love when I m at [fill in the blank] this week. Pass the heart to a child, and let the child pray and put a masking tape bandage on the heart. Continue to pass the heart until each child has had a turn to pray. Say: When people are sick or hurt, they need help. God provides doctors and nurses to help, but it s important to know that we can help others who are hurt. We don t have to be doctors or nurses or grown-ups to be able to help. Our Bible story today is about a man who helped someone he didn t know. He helped even when other people wouldn t. Listen carefully to find out how the man helped. 6 Lesson 12 n Bible Song and Prayer Time SUPPLIES: Bible, construction paper, scissors, CD player, basket or box Before class, make surprise cards for this activity by track 3 cutting construction paper into 2x6-inch strips. Prepare a surprise card for each child, plus a few extras for visitors. Fold the cards in half, and stamp the flower stamp inside one of the surprise cards. Bookmark Luke 10:25-37 in the Bible you ll be using. Have the children sit in a circle. Say: Now it s time to choose a Bible person to bring me the Bible marked with today s Bible story. As we sing our Bible song, I ll hand out the surprise cards. Don t look inside your surprise card until the song is over. Lead children in singing Read God s Book (track 3) with the CD to the tune of The Muffin Man. As you sing, hand out the folded surprise cards. Choose children to be the surprisecard collector, the Bible replacer (to put the Bible away), and the cheerleader. Just be sure to keep track of who fills your roles each week so each child gets a chance to feel special. Now it s time to read God s book, Read God s book, read God s book. Now it s time to read God s book. Let s hear a Bible story. (Repeat 3x.) After the song, say: You may look inside your surprise cards. The person who has the flower stamped inside his or her card will be our Bible person for today. Identify the Bible person. Ask the Bible person to bring you the Bible. Lead the class in clapping for the Bible person, cheering, and making fun applause sound effects by slapping your thighs with your palms. Help the Bible person open the Bible to the marked place, and show children where your story comes from. Then have the Bible person sit down. Say: [Name] was our special Bible person today. Each week, we ll have only one special Bible person, but each one of you is a special part of our class! Today we re all learning that we can help others who are hurt. Let s say a special prayer now and ask God to help us learn how we can help others who are hurt. I ll pass around this basket. When the basket comes to you, put your surprise card in it and say, God, let me help others who are hurt. Have a child pass around the basket or box. After your helper has collected everyone s surprise card, set the basket aside, and pick up the Bible. Lead children in this prayer: God, thank you for the Bible and for all the stories in it. Teach us today that we can help others who are hurt. In Jesus name, amen. n Hear and Tell the Bible Story SUPPLIES: none Bring out the Learning Mat: Parables of Jesus, and lay it on the floor. Have the children stand around the mat. Hold up the Bible and say: Our story is about someone who was hurt and the person who helped. We ll act out the story from the book of Luke as we go. 162 Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6

Jesus Tells About the Good Samaritan A traveler was walking along a road one bright, sunny day. Have children stroll around the edge of the Learning Mat, whistle, and pretend to look up at the sun, shielding their eyes. Suddenly, some robbers jumped on the man and pushed him to the ground! Have the children lie on the floor and pretend to fight off the robbers. There were too many robbers, and the man couldn t protect himself. The robbers stole everything the man had and left him hurt and bleeding on the road. Have children lie still and groan softly. Ooh, thought the man. I m hurt, and I can t get up. Surely someone will come and help me. Soon the man heard footsteps coming along the road. Have the children stand up and walk in place. It s a priest! Oh, surely he ll stop, thought the hurt man. But when the priest came to the hurt man He didn t stop! He walked right by! Shake your head no. The priest walked on with his head held high! Have children walk a few steps with their heads and noses in the air. The hurt man just lay on the road. Have children lie down and groan softly. After a while, he heard more footsteps. Have children stand up and walk around the mat. It s a Levite a man who loves God as I do, thought the hurt man. Oh, surely he ll stop. But when the Levite came to the hurt man He didn t stop! He walked right by! Shake your head no. The Levite walked on with his head held high! Have children walk a few steps with their heads and noses in the air. The hurt man lay on the road. Have children lie down and groan softly. After a long while, he heard more footsteps. Have children stand up and walk around the mat. It s a man from Samaria a man who doesn t like Jewish men like me, thought the man on the road. Surely he ll never stop. But when the Samaritan came to the hurt man He stopped! He didn t walk right by! Shake your head no. The Samaritan stayed right by his side! Have the children kneel down and pretend they re helping someone. The Samaritan felt sorry for the hurt man. The Samaritan poured olive oil on the hurt leg as medicine to make it feel better. Have children make pouring motions. Then the good Samaritan bandaged the man s leg. Have children make motions like they re wrapping with a bandage. The good Samaritan lifted (have children make grunting sounds and make lifting motions) the injured man onto his donkey and took the man to town. Have children walk around the edge of the mat, pretending to lead donkeys. He took the injured man to an inn and asked the innkeeper to take care of the injured man. Have the children sit where they are. The good Samaritan even gave the innkeeper money to take care of him. Pretend to hand coins to someone. Ask: Even the men who loved God didn t stop to help the hurt man. Why did the Samaritan help? (He cared for him; the Samaritan was a nice man; he wanted to; the Samaritan treated people with love.) How would it feel to be hurt and have no one s help? (I d feel mad; I d feel scared.) Who was God s helper in this story? (The good man; the good Samaritan.) Say: Even though people from Samaria weren t always friends with Jewish people, the Samaritan stopped to help. The good Samaritan was God s helper. 8 Lesson 12 Ask: Who are other people who can help when someone s hurt or sick? (Doctors; nurses; ambulance people; parents; us.) How can you be God s helper if people are sick or hurt? (I can take them to a doctor; phone for help; pray for them; give them a card; be kind and stop to help; take flowers to someone who s sick.) What does it feel like to help people when they re hurt or sick? (It feels good to see them get well; I feel proud that I helped.) Say: God wants us to be there when others need help and are hurt. Just as the good Samaritan did, we can help others who are hurt. Let s sing an action song to help us remember that God s helpers care for people who are hurt or need help. n Do the Bible Story SUPPLIES: CD player Say: Let s sing an action song to help us track 16 remember that God s helpers care for people who are hurt or need help. Choose three children to stand. One of you is the Priest, one of you is the Levite, and the other is the Hurt Person. The rest of us are Good Samaritans. Tell the Good Samaritans, the Levite, and the Priest to stand in a circle around the Learning Mat. Have the child who s playing the hurt person lie in the center of the Learning Mat. As we come to your parts in the song, the Priest and the Levite will leave the circle and walk by the Hurt Person. Then the Levite and Priest must stand apart from the circle. When we sing about the Good Samaritan, the rest of us will gently lift the hurt person and carry him or her off the mat. Have children get in their places. Lead children in singing The Good Samaritan (track 16) to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell with the CD. Be sure that when the children lift the hurt person, they lift only the child s arms and legs. Do not let them pick the child up completely. The man lay in the road. The man lay in the road. Oh me, oh my, don t pass me by! The man lay in the road. A priest walked right by. A Levite walked right by. Oh me, oh my, don t pass me by! They both walked right by. The good Samaritan helped. The good Samaritan helped. Hooray! Hooray! He saved the day! The good Samaritan helped. Continue singing the song without the CD until every child has had a turn to play either the Priest, the Levite, or the Hurt Person. Fold the Learning Mat, and return it to the Learning Lab box. 164 Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6

Closing n Can I Help You? SUPPLIES: adhesive bandage, soap, washcloth Bring out Pockets the Kangaroo. Go through the following puppet script. After you finish the script, put Pockets away and out of sight. Jesus Tells About the Good Samaritan Teacher: Pockets: Teacher: Pockets: Teacher: Pockets: (Pockets limps in.) Hello, Pockets. It s good to see you this morning what happened? Ooh, I fell off my roller skates. I think I m dying Oh, Pockets, I don t think you re dying, but it does look like you skinned your knee. Yes, it hurts, and I really think I m dying. (Limps around.) You seem pretty lively to me. What do you think, boys and girls? (Pause for response.) C mon, Pockets, we ll help you. I don t think you can help. I need doctors and nurses and and maybe even an ambulance and Teacher: Pockets, we ve been learning today that we can help others who are hurt. We ve been learning that anyone can be a helper. Children, can you tell Pockets the story of the good Samaritan and how he helped the injured man? (Allow time for children to share the story with Pockets.) Pockets: Teacher: Wow! Even the Levite and the priest didn t stop, but the good Samaritan did. I guess anyone can be a helper. And we can help with your skinned knee, Pockets. (Have pairs of children come up to wash Pockets knee with soap, wipe it dry with the washcloth, and put a bandage on her knee.) Pockets: Thanks, all you good Samaritans. You helped teach me that we can help others who are hurt and that we don t have to be doctors or nurses we just need to be God s helpers! I m going to look for someone who needs help right now. Bye, kids. Permission to photocopy this script from Group s Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K granted for local church use. Copyright Group Publishing, Inc., 1515 Cascade Avenue, Loveland, CO group.com n Friend Aid SUPPLIES: Bible, adhesive bandages, permanent markers, CD player Hand each child an adhesive bandage. Set out permanent markers. track 15 Have children use the markers to each decorate a special bandage to remind them to help others. Remind children to use the markers with care, as permanent marker will not come out of clothing. As children work, ask questions such as Why is it important to help others? and How can we treat others like we want to be treated? Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6 165

Lesson 12 After the bandages are finished, have children get into groups of two or three. Say: We ve been learning that we can help others who are hurt. We ve been learning that sometimes we need other people to help us, too. Ask someone in your group to help you put on your bandage. Then help the other people in your group do the same. Then open your Bible to Ephesians 6:7, and show children the words. Say: God wants us to be there when someone needs help or is hurt. Our Bible verse, Ephesians 6:7, says Work...as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. So when we work to help others, God wants us to have the attitude that we re working for Jesus. Let s sing a Bible verse song to remind us that we can help others who are hurt. Children on this side of the room will pop up and down on the word work. (Designate a side of the room.) And children on this side will pop up and down on the word you. (Indicate the other side of the room.) Lead children in singing Work (Ephesians 6:7) (track 15) with the CD. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah! Jesus, I m so glad I get to work for you! And it s so fun Because it s all for you! There s a whole lotta things That I need to do. Instead of doing it for others, It s all for you. And I m glad I get to work for you! Work (Ephesians 6:7) by Jay Stocker Group Publishing, Inc. All rights reserved. (Repeat from the beginning 2x.) Yeah, Jesus, I m glad I get to work for you! Yeah, I m glad I get to work for you! Gather children in a circle. Say: We ll end our time together with a prayer. Join hands with the person next to you. Pray: Dear God, thank you for the friends and family we care about. Please show us ways to help others who are hurt or not feeling well. Help us share your love with everyone. In Jesus name, amen. Have children wear their bandages home. Say: Wear your bandage home to remind you to help others who are hurt, sick, or unhappy. Collect name tags for next week s use, and remind children to take home any crafts they made today. Growing closer to Jesus extends beyond the classroom. Photocopy the Today I Learned handout (at the end of this lesson) for this week, and send it home with your children. Encourage parents to use the handout to plan meaningful family activities to reinforce this week s topic. 166 Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6

Jesus Tells About the Good Samaritan For Extra Time If you have a long class time or want to add additional elements to your lesson, try one of the following activities. n Lively Learning: Human Crutches Have the class get into groups of three. Say: Choose two people in your group to be the Crutches and one person to be the Broken Leg. Have the Crutches stand at one end of the room. Tell the Broken Legs to lie on the floor at the opposite end of the room. In this game, the Crutches will help the Broken Legs. When I say go, Crutches hop to the Broken Legs and help them back to the starting place. Broken Legs may put their arms over the shoulders of the Crutches. Continue playing until each child has had a turn to be a Broken Leg. Remind the children that helping others is a way to serve God and that we can help others who are hurt. n Make to Take: First-Aid Bag Let children make first-aid bags. Set out lunch sacks, markers or crayons, cotton swabs or cotton balls, adhesive bandages, paper towels, and small pieces of hand soap or moist towelettes. Have the children decorate their sacks. As they work, talk about times a first-aid bag would come in handy, such as when you re camping or traveling or if you skin your knee. Then hand each child the following items to place in his or her bag: a cotton swab or cotton ball, a bandage, a small chunk of soap, and a paper towel. Encourage children to explain why each item is important in a first-aid bag. Remind children that we can help others who are hurt and that a first-aid bag can come in handy. n Treat to Eat: Red Cross Cookies Have children clean their hands with baby wipes or at a nearby sink. Set sugar cookies, napkins, and tubes of red icing on a table. Ask children what a red cross symbol stands for. (It stands for helping others when they re hurt or need help.) Let each child frost a sugar cookie with a red cross while you talk about ways the Red Cross helps people around the world. Ask questions such as How is the Red Cross like the good Samaritan? and What are ways you can help others? Point out that the cross is also a symbol for Jesus and that we can help others who are hurt or need us. n Story Picture: The Good Samaritan Helps Give each child a photocopy of the Today I Learned handout. Let children color their pictures. Then have children glue small strips of facial tissue to the injured man s head, arms, and leg as bandages. Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6 167

Today your child learned that we can help others who are hurt. Children learned about the good Samaritan, who helped when no one else would. They talked about ways to help others and how anyone can help. Verse to Learn Work as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people (Ephesians 6:7). Ask Me... l How did the Samaritan help the hurt man? l What are ways you can help someone? l How can our family help others who are hurt or sick? Family Fun l Let everyone in the family help make a first-aid box. Use markers and construction paper to decorate a shoe box. Fill the first-aid box with items such as adhesive bandages, first-aid cream, antiseptic spray, gauze, and adhesive tape. Include a colorful note that says, Jesus loves you! Donate the first-aid box to a shelter for the homeless.
