1 Lesson Highlights: Scripture References: Luke 10:25-37 Teaching Point: Jesus clarifies for us all what it means to prove to be a good neighbor. Catch Phrase: Loving God by helping others! Unit Memory Verse: Luke 10:27 And he answered, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself. ABC Verse: 1 Corinthians 13:4 Love is patient. Love is kind. Story Snap Shot The issue is not we don t want to help anyone. The dilemma is who we give to and how far we need to go? In our story this morning, Jesus is having a conversation with a lawyer who desires some clarification on what is loving his neighbor. However, love is really is not his question. This man was to show himself as loving and righteous by performing the law. Jesus lets him prove his own point by showing that religious trappings do not make people more loving. Love is doing the hard work of being a good neighbor to all people verses a self-serving life that wants to be justified. Write kids names on board with total attendance! 1 P a g e

2 PreK NT Lesson 6: Questions to Ask the Kids: Good morning how are we doing? How is school going? Did you have a good Valentine s Day? Read: Well since we know Valentine s Day we celebrate love.i have a wonderful story about how Jesus helped a young man understand what loving your neighbor looks like. We are going to read the conversation they have about loving others! Read Luke 9:25-28 According to these verses what does God really want us to know and do? (Love God and love your neighbor.) Read Luke 9:29 What is the question of the lawyer? (Who is my neighbor?) Read Luke 9:30-37 Who was the hero in this story? (The good Samaritan.) Who are not the heroes? (The priest or Levite.) Who do you want to be like? Do you know what I am learning: Loving God by helping others! End in Prayer 2 P a g e

3 After the Rally Idea: Pretend you hear a noise and pull out a puppet! 1. Greet the kids by reading the names on the board!!! 2. What songs did you rally? 3. What was the story about? 4. What are we learning? (use the catch phrase.end in prayer) Prayer Time Before you pray, allow the kids time to share with you things that are happening in their lives. Be sure you write these down with their names for you to pray for as the week goes along. Ask individuals about how things went with the things they mentioned the previous week. Older kids can be asked if they will pray for another who mentions something. As the leader, begin by opening in prayer and thanking God for this lesson: Praise Jesus for coming to save us even though we were His enemies. Ask God to give us compassionate hearts like His so that we can help everyone around us as He has helped us. Pray for any specific requests named either by praying yourself or by opening it up to those who said they would pray. Suggested Follow-up Activities Teachers are free to choose the activities that they feel are best for their group. The idea is that as the children work and play, remind them of the truths they just learned. Scripture Memory: Figure out your reward system for memorizing the Scriptures provided in this section. Give the children several opportunities to tell it to you in class. Play a memory game with the kids if you have time. 3 P a g e

4 PreK NT Lesson 6: Craft: Good Neighbor Remind the kids we learned today about what it means to be a good neighbor. The lawyer wanted to know WHO he had to help but Jesus told him that he was supposed to help everyone who needed him and to do everything we can to give to others because Jesus gave His life for us. Give each child a copy of the craft page and have them color it as you review the story. Give each of them a small band-aid and tell them to put it on the hurt man. Next, give them a small piece of cloth and have them glue just the bottom edge of it so that they can lay it over the man. You could also give them a cotton ball and have them glue it on the page as a cushion for the man s head. If possible, have them use a cotton swab to put a drop of oil on the bottle to show it full of oil. Materials: copies of the craft page; markers or crayons; stick glue; small band-aids; small pieces of cloth; cotton balls; cotton swabs; small bowls of oil Craft: Mending Wounds Remind the kids we learned today about what it means to be a good neighbor. The lawyer wanted to know WHO he had to help but Jesus told him that he was supposed to help everyone who needed him and to do everything we can to give to others because Jesus gave His life for us. Give each child a cardstock copy of the card and allow them to color as they d like. Have them cut out the card. They will then fold each line to form what will look like a matchbook. Have them staple only the very bottom of the smallest rectangle to the back so that it forms a small pocket. Give them each several small band-aids to put inside and show them how to tuck the flap into the pocket so that it stays shut. Materials: cardstock copies of the craft page; markers or crayons; scissors; stapler; small bandaids Craft/Activity: Helping Hands Remind the kids we learned today about what it means to be a good neighbor. The lawyer wanted to know WHO he had to help but Jesus told him that he was supposed to help everyone who needed him and to do everything we can to give to others because Jesus gave His life for us. Give each child a small paper sack and have them decorate it with markers or crayons. Give each child a copy of the tag and allow them to color that also. On the back of the tag, have them write their name. Next, provide small items that you might give to someone who is hurt or not feeling well. These could include individually wrapped antiseptic wipes, band-aids, cotton 4 P a g e

5 balls or swabs, small pieces of candy, stickers, etc. Allow the kids to add some of each to their bags. Then have them fold the top over and punch a hole in it. They can then tie their tag on with yarn. Ask them to think of someone they know that isn t feeling well. Have them see if they can partner with their parents to do something more like providing a meal or doing a chore for them. Materials: copies of the craft page; very small paper sacks; markers or crayons; stick glue; small adhesive bandages; small pieces of wrapped candy such as Starburst; small packets of antiseptic wipes; cotton balls; cotton swabs; stickers; hole punches; yarn; scissors Craft: Loving Your Neighbor Garland Remind the kids we learned today about what it means to be a good neighbor. The lawyer wanted to know WHO he had to help but Jesus told him that he was supposed to help everyone who needed him and to do everything we can to give to others because Jesus gave His life for us. Give each child a copy of the craft page and have them color each square. Next ask them to cut them out and punch two holes at the tops of the cards. Provide them with yarn and ask them to string them as a garland to remind them to love God and others whenever they can.
