(v8) 13. What if Ahaz wouldn t believe? (v9) Ahaz wasn t a good king. He didn t deserve God to be loving and kind to him. But the LORD was giving Ahaz the chance to trust Him. Then, the LORD would give him a strong kingdom. But Ahaz chose NOT to believe Him. You don t deserve God s mercy. But the Lord wants you to trust Him and be strong. Child sacrifices were made to Molech. He was an Ammonite god (1 Kings 11v7). This was done at Topheth in the valley of Hinnom (2 Kings 23v10). Find it on a map A metal statue of Moelech was heated red hot. A little child was put in Molech s arms...and burned to death. It was an abomination to the LORD. That means that the LORD really, really hated it The prophets Isaiah, Micah and Hosea prophesied at this time (Isaiah 1v1; Micah1v1; Hosea 1v1). We learnt a bit about them last week. (Leviticus 18v21; Deuteronomy 12v31). Often the firstborn children were sacrificed. Micah spoke against child sacrifice (Micah 6v7). King Ahaz sacrificed his son (2 Kings 16v3). Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also? (Isaiah 7v13)

4 Genealogy of Kings

5 Monday Oded and the captives Bible Reading: 2 Chronicles 28v What did the LORD do? (v5) 2. Where were the captives brought to? (v5) Find it on a map 3. Who did Pekah s army kill? (v6) 4. Why? What did Israel do? (v8) Find it on a map Judah and Israel are called brethren (brothers). They were all descended from the Israelites who came out of Egypt. 7. What did Oded say to do? (v9-11) Israelites weren t meant to keep other Israelites to be slaves (Leviticus 25v39). 8. Why? (v11) 9. Who wouldn t allow the captives into Samaria? (v12) 10. Why? (v13) 11. What did they do for the captives? (v15) 12. Where did they bring them to? (v15) Find it on a map God had His man in the right place at the right time. Oded was God's man with God's message. He wasn t afraid to speak out for the LORD. Never be afraid to speak out for God. But ask the Lord to put you in the right place at the right time...and to show you what to say. The Bible doesn t say anything else about him. Did you know? Jericho was the first city Joshua and the Israelites conquered after crossing Jordan (Joshua 6). Joshua put a curse on the man who would rebuild it. His oldest child would die when he laid the foundation. His youngest son would die Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? (Romans 2v4) when he finished putting on the gates. This really did happen...many years later (Joshua 6v26; 1 Kings 16v34). Jericho was known as the city of palm trees.

7 Tuesday Ahaz gets help from Assyria Bible Reading: 2 Kings 16v6-9; 2 Chronicles 28v What city did Syria take from Judah? (2 Kings 16v6) Find it on a map 2. Who did Ahaz ask to help him? What had Ahaz given him? (v21) Assyria was the world power then...conquering the countries around. So, the king of Assyria was really looking out for himself...not Ahaz and Judah! And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. (Matthew 23v12) The LORD brought Judah low because of Ahaz s sin (v19). Refusing to go God s way will cost you much. Humble yourself before the LORD and obey Him OR He will bring you down and punish you. Remember, the more you lift yourself up against God, the harder your fall will be! 8 Map showing Philistine attacks Map showing Kir (Der) Stop and Think! Ahaz took silver and gold from the LORD s temple to pay the king of Assyria. Be careful. It s so easy to keep God s money for things we want...instead of giving it to God s work.

9 Wednesday Ahaz s idolatry Bible Reading: 2 Kings 16v10-20; 2 Chronicles 28v22-27 Ahaz was king of Judah. Tiglathpileser was king of Assyria. 1. Where did Ahaz meet Tiglathpileser? Where did he take the brazen altar from? (v14) 6. What was it used for? (v15) 7. What was Urijah to do with the great altar? (v15) The great altar was the altar Urijah made. 8. The LORD wanted the burnt offerings made on the brazen altar (Exodus 38v1). The brazen altar was used every day for animal sacrifices. People came to worship God. They brought living animals. The priests killed the animals. Their blood was shed. This is a picture of the Messiah Christ. He shed His blood for us on the cross at Calvary (Romans 5v8; Ephesians 1v7).

(v11) 9. Why? (v10-12) 10. Who would they NOT listen to? (v13+14) 11. What had they transgressed? (18v12) The LORD had chosen Israel to be His special people. They were to worship only HIM (Exodus 20; Deuteronomy 6v6v1-6). Sadly, they chose to worship many gods. They wouldn t listen to God s prophets. Listen to God s warnings. He s giving you time to turn from your sin. It s your day of grace. But keep saying, No to HIM... and you ll die in your sins. Then, it will be forever too late. (Hosea 14v9) Stop and Think! Some people say that these 10 northern tribes were lost...and they eventually ended up in Britain. BUT that s not what the Bible teaches. Some people from these 10 tribes were living in Judah. Many years before this Jeroboam 1 st had set up idol worship. Those who loved the LORD went to live in Judah (2 Chronicles 11v14-17). Those who went into captivity were not lost. Some of them did mix in with Assyrian ways. But others still kept being known as Israelites.

13 Friday The Samaritans Bible Reading: 2 Kings 17v What did Israel reject? (v15) 2. What did they worship? (v16) 3. How did they make the LORD angry? They let the devil have a foot-hold in your life. And they may cause you many problems in your life, too!
