The BIBLE and its HISTORICAL Contradictions THEOLOGICAL Contradictions? CHRISTIAN Contradictions

1. Where exactly was Jesus when He healed the blind man?

*Luke 18:35-38 VS. *Mark 10:46-48

As He drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. And hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what this meant. They told him, Jesus of Nazareth is passing by. And he cried out, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! - Luke 18:35-38

And they came to Jericho. And as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, Son of David, have mercy on me! - Mark 10:46,47

1. Where exactly was Jesus when He healed the blind man? A. Drawing near to Jericho? B. Leaving Jericho?

- German archaeologist (Ernst Sellin) - Excavation between 1907 and Discovered twin-cities of Jericho in Jesus time. - Old city of Jericho (from Old Testament time) and new Roman city of Jericho in Jesus time. - The Old city was about a mile northeast of the New Jericho.

1. Where exactly was Jesus when He healed the blind man? A. Drawing near to Jericho? B. Leaving Jericho? Answer: Both. Leaving the old city, and approaching the new one.

2. How did Judas really die?

*Matthew 27:3-5 VS. *Acts 1:16-18

Then when Judas, His betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, I have sinned by betraying innocent blood. They said, What is that to us? See to it yourself. And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself. - Matthew 27:3-5

Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry. (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out.. - Acts 1:16-18

2. How exactly did Judas die? A. He hanged himself? B. He fell, burst open and his bowels gushed out?

- Matt. 27 only mentions hanging, not dying. - Many people fail at suicide by hanging (30%). - Judas may have failed, then jumped from a cliff. - Or, Judas hanged himself over a high enough cliff and the branch broke. - Or, Judas hanged himself from a decent height and then, after his body decayed and bloated, the rope or branch eventually broke, and he fell, bursting open.

2. How exactly did Judas die? A. He hanged himself? B. He fell and burst open? Answer: Likely both in one act. Otherwise, after failing to die by hanging, he was successful with his fall.

3. Which genealogy of Jesus is correct - Matthew 1 or Luke 3?

*Matthew 1:1-16 VS. *Luke 3:23-38

The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers....and David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah....and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. - Matthew 1:1-16

Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,..the son of Nathan, the son of David....the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God. - Luke 3:23-38

3. Which genealogy of Jesus is correct - Matthew 1 or Luke 3? A. Matthew 1 DAVID - Solomon.. Matthan, Jacob, Joseph - Jesus? B. Luke 3? DAVID - Nathan.. Matthat, Heli, Joseph - Jesus?

- There is no biblical explanation, only outside sources. - Most people claim a Eusebius explanation of 2 separate genealogies one of Joseph, one of Mary. - Eusebius actually gives a different explanation: - Heli died childless, and his brother Jacob raised up a son to him, named Joseph. - Matthan, from Solomon, was Jacob s father. He then died and so Matthat, from Nathan, married his widow, and they had a son named Heli.

Thus we shall find the two, Jacob and [H]Eli... Of these the one, Jacob, when his brother Eli had died childless, took the latter s wife and begat by her a son Joseph, his own son by nature and in accordance with reason. Wherefore also it is written: Jacob begat Joseph. But according to law he was the son of Eli, for Jacob, being the brother of the latter, raised up seed to him. - Eusebius Ecclesiastical History (Book 1, Chapter 7, Pt. 9)

If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the dead man shall not be married outside the family to a stranger. Her husband s brother shall go in to her and take her as his wife and perform the duty of a husband s brother to her. And the first son whom she bears shall succeed to the name of his dead brother, that his name may not be blotted out of Israel. - Deuteronomy 25:5,6

Thus we shall find the two, Jacob and Eli... Of these the one, Jacob, when his brother Eli had died childless, took the latter s wife and begat by her a son Joseph, his own son by nature.. But according to law he was the son of Eli, for Jacob, being the brother of the latter, raised up seed to him. - Eusebius Ecclesiastical History (Book 1, Chapter 7, Pt. 9)

..Matthan the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. - Matthew 1 Father, acc. to Law Father, by nature Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli, the son of Matthat.. - Luke 3:23-38

..Matthan the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. - Matthew 1 Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli, the son of Matthat.. - Luke 3:23-38 Who was Jacob and Heli s father, Matthan or Matthat?

If we reckon the generations from David through Solomon, the third from the end is found to be Matthan, who begot Jacob the father of Joseph. But if, with Luke, we reckon them from Nathan the son of David, in like manner the third from the end is [Matthat], whose son Eli was the father of Joseph. For Joseph was the son of Eli, the son of [Matthat]. - Eusebius Ecclesiastical History (Book 1, Chapter 7, Pt. 5)

By Estha then (for this was the woman's name according to tradition) Matthan, a descendant of Solomon, first begot Jacob. And when Matthan was dead, [Matthat], who traced his descent back to Nathan, being of the same tribe but of another family, married her as before said, and begot a son Eli. - Eusebius Ecclesiastical History (Book 1, Chapter 7, Pt. 8)

4. How long was Jesus in the tomb before He rose from the dead?

*Matthew 12:40 VS. *Mark 15:42-46, 16:9

For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. - JESUS - Matthew 12:40

And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the Council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died. And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. (cont.) - Mark 15:42-46, 16:9

..And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. - Mark 15:42-46, 16:9

4. How long was Jesus in the tomb before He rose from the dead? A. 3 days and 3 nights 72 hrs? B. Friday PM to Sunday AM ~ 36 hrs? (5:30pm?) to (5:30am?)

- Jesus was clearly crucified on a Friday. - It s also very clear that Jesus rose on Sunday. - Though Jesus says 3 days and 3 nights, He also says On the Third Day. - Though Jesus says 3 days and 3 nights, He also says After Three Days. - The problem is not - How Did Jesus Stay in the tomb for 3 days and 3 nights, BUT.. How does ON and AFTER 3 days and EXACTLY 3 days and 3 nights mean the same thing?

[37] And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed His last. [42] And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath.. - Mark 15:37,42 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb.. - Mark 16:1,2

It was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning. The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment. - Luke 23:54-56 Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. - John 19:31

Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. - Mark 16:9 [1] Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.. [19] On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you! - John 20:1,19

From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. - Matthew 16:21 As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day. And they were greatly distressed. - Matthew 17:22,23

And taking the twelve, He said to them, See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished. For He will be delivered over to the Gentiles and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon. And after flogging Him, they will kill Him, and on the third day He will rise. - Luke 18:31-33 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how He told you, while He was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise. - Luke 24:6,7

He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that He must be killed and after three days rise again. - Mark 8:31 They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were, because He was teaching His disciples. He said to them, The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill Him, and after three days He will rise. - Mark 9:30,31

How does ON and AFTER 3 days..and.. EXACTLY 3 days and 3 nights mean the same thing?

ON Third Day = AFTER Three Days The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate and said, Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while He was still alive, After three days I will rise. Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day.. - Matthew 27:62-64

PART of a Day = WHOLE Day After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry. [Matt. 4:2]..where for forty days He was tempted by the devil.. [Luke 4:2] - Rabbi Eleazar ben Azariah, tenth in the descent from Ezra was very specific: "A day and a night are an Onah ['a portion of time'] and the portion of an Onah is as the whole of it" [J.Talmud, Shabbath 9.3 and B.Talmud, Pesahim 4a]

3 days and 3 nights = Ancient Phrase, Jewish Idiom - 'Three days and three nights' is a special phrase used in the ancient world with the meaning 'long enough to be definitely dead. - Three days and three nights' was a Jewish idiom for a period covering PARTS of three 24-hour 'days-andnights. [New Bible Commentary, p 819,920 under Jonah 1:17/Matt 12:40]

3 days and 3 nights = Ancient Phrase, Jewish Idiom - In ancient literature [three days and three nights] indicated a period so long that if someone appeared to be in the realm of death for that length of time, only divine intervention could bring him back to life....in Jonah it heightens the picture of the great power of God who can save His disobedient messenger even after 'three days and three nights.' [The Books of Joel, Obadiah, Jonah, Nahum, Habakkuk and Zephaniah commentary by John D.W. Watts (Cambridge Univ Press, 1975), p 82f] at all hours of the night & in no time at all

Problem: Jesus said AFTER 3 days, ON the 3 rd day and 3 days and 3 nights 1. ON Third Day = AFTER Three Days 2. PART of a Day = WHOLE Day 3. 3 days and 3 nights = Ancient Phrase, Jewish Idiom

The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate and said, Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while He was still alive, After three days I will rise. Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day.. - Matthew 27:62-64

4. How long was Jesus in the tomb before He rose from the dead? A. 3 days and 3 nights 72 hrs? B. Friday PM to Sunday AM ~ 36 hrs? Answer: B. Friday PM to Sunday AM ~ 36 hrs (5:30pm?) to (5:30am?)
