Faith like a Grain of Mustard Seed One lesson that Jesus consistently taught was the necessity of faith and the power of faith. At one point when the disciples asked for increased faith he told them about the mustard seed. The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!" And the Lord said, "If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you. - Luke 17:5-6 ESV Notice that Jesus did not say, if your faith is as small as this pebble then you will be able to move a tree. Why? A pebble is just a pebble. It might get smaller if you crush it but it will never grow like a seed. A mustard seed, if given the right soil, water, and sun will grow into a large tree. It just takes a little seed to start and the power of God. It is that way with faith. That is faith in God. When a person responds in obedient faith to God, then God with all his power will work with that person. Faith starts small, as Jesus said, like a small mustard seed, but like the mustard seed, it has the potential to grow into whatever God wants it to be. A life of faith is a life powered by God s power. It is a life of an ordinary person who is transformed into a child and servant of God. In this Newsletter we continue our study of the people of faith. In the life of Moses we see a man who was prepared by God to become a deliverer and shepherd of his people. In considering the history of Moses we see the dynamic development of Moses faith in God and how it changed not only his life but the lives of the entire nation of Israel. From being a hesitant servant who took one small step of obedient faith he became a faithful servant who saw God s mighty power, led his people out of slavery and through the wilderness to the Promised Land, witnessed the love and care of God for his people, and saw the glory of God that no human had seen before. What is more, he became an example for the Messiah to follow. Somehow seeing the transformation and accomplishments by God s power in Moses life, moving a mulberry tree into the sea seems a small thing! * * * Moses Prepared by God to Deliver Israel Several hundred years after the death of Joseph, the family of Israel, the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, were still settled in Egypt. They had grown from a family of 70 people to a nation of almost 2 million during those 400 years. The Egyptian Pharaoh and people of Egypt became fearful of them and in order to control them enslaved them. The Israelites called to God for help but before they called he was preparing a deliverer. At this time Pharaoh had ordered that all Israeli male children were to be slaughtered at birth. Moses was born to a family of the tribe of Levi. His mother hid him for three months but could not conceal him any longer. Surely with fear and trembling but also with faith she prepared a basket and set Moses afloat in the river near where the daughter of Pharaoh (Egypt s king) bathed. What faith this must have taken to first hide him and then let her baby son float down the river knowing that he was under a death sentence What a strange beginning for a child and yet Moses life became even stranger as God prepared him for his life s work. Moses was adopted by Pharaoh s daughter as her own son. Who would expect that an Egyptian princess would adopt the child of slaves! Even stranger, in order to complete the picture, Pharaoh s daughter hired Moses own mother to nurse him before bringing him into Pharaoh s palace. So Moses as a young child was taught by his parents concerning Page 1 their heritage, their God, their condition of slavery and their hope. Then, as a son of Pharaoh s daughter he was educated in all the ways of the Egyptians and their gods. At age 40 Moses saw an Israelite slave being beaten by an Egyptian. He intervened, defended the Israelite slave, and killed the Egyptian. It became known what he had done and out of fear of Pharaoh s wrath, he fled into the wilderness. For the next 40 years Moses lived far from the comforts and sophistication of the Egyptian royal palace. He learned how to live in the wilderness, shepherd sheep, and wait for God s direction. This wilderness life taught him humility and patience. (Continued on page 2)

Moses Prepared by God to Deliver Israel (Continued from page 1) Finally, when Moses was 80 years old, he was ready for the task ahead. Not that Moses thought he was ready but God knew that the time had come. While Moses was shepherding sheep on Mount Horeb, he noticed flames of fire coming from a bush but the bush did not burn up. When Moses approached the bush God called to him from within the bush and told him to take off his shoes because he was on holy ground. Then God commanded Moses to go back to Egypt, back to Pharaoh and bring his people out of Egypt: "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt." Exodus 3:6-10 NIV Moses, however, was very unsure. He had been totally humbled by his experience of rejection by his people when he had tried to help and also by his years of living in exile in the wilderness. He found several excuses to not go but God answered them all: Moses: Who am I that I should go? God: I will be with you. You and the people will worship me on this mountain. Moses: What will I say to Israel? Will they believe that God has spoken to me? God: " I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.'" Say to the Israelites, 'The Lord, the God of your fathers the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation The elders of Israel will listen to you. (Exodus 3:14-18) Moses: What if they don t listen to me or believe me? God: I will give you signs to show them Moses: I ve never been eloquent. I m slow of speech and tongue. God: Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say." (Exodus 4:11-12) Moses: " Oh, my Lord, please send someone else." God: (by this time angry) Your brother, Aaron, is already on his way to help you. Moses had changed during his time in the wilderness. Whereas he had been educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action (Acts 7:22) before he fled Egypt, he now thought of himself as slow of speech and tongue. He had learned some humility but Moses had a lot to learn about God. It was not his power of speech or lack of it that mattered. God would give him what he needed to do God s work. At last, although he was hesitant, he finally went and met his brother Aaron as God had commanded: The Lord said to Aaron, "Go into the wilderness to meet Moses." So he went and met him at the mountain of God and kissed him. And Moses told Aaron all the words of the Lord with which he had sent him to speak, and all the signs that he had commanded him to do. Then Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the people of Israel. Aaron spoke all the words that the Lord had spoken to Moses and did the signs in the sight of the people. And the people believed; and when they heard that the Lord had visited the people of Israel and that he had seen their affliction, they bowed their heads and worshiped. Exodus 4:27-31 This one act of faithful obedience opened up a whole chain of events that brought about the salvation of Israel from slavery and the demonstration of God s power and glory against all the power of the Egyptian nation and false gods. It was this obedient, mustard seed size of faith, that led to Moses and the Israelites to know and experience who their God is. This step by step of faith led Moses to experience: The Mighty Deliverance of God The Presence and Provision of God The Wrath and Patience of God The Glory of God Page 2

Experiencing the Mighty Deliverance of God Things did not go well when Moses and Aaron went to approach Pharaoh. They requested that the Israelites be allowed to take three days to go into the wilderness to worship their God. When Pharaoh heard their request he decided that the Israelites must not have enough work to do if they would contemplate taking a three-day break. His orders to the taskmasters were: Let them work harder. Don t give them any straw to make bricks but they must produce the same amount of work. The elders of Israel were angry with Moses because now their servitude had become much worse. Moses (the hesitant servant) turned to God and asked him why: "O Lord, why have you done evil to this people? Why did you ever send me? For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done evil to this people, and you have not delivered your people at all." Exodus 5:22-23 ESV Moses faith was at an all-time low. God had promised to rescue Israel. Instead, they were now persecuted even more. God told Moses to have faith and see. What followed was a series of miracles, the ten plagues, that showed Moses and Aaron the mighty power of God. These plagues also taught Israel the power of God and the uselessness of the Egyptian Gods. Each of the plagues was a judgment against an Egyptian deity. And, of course, all of these plagues were judgments against the Egyptians for their terrible treatment of Israel. Exodus chapters 7 through 11 describe these plagues. Before each plague Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and warned him that, unless he freed the Israelites, the LORD God of Israel would send the next plague. Each time Pharaoh refused. Finally, before the tenth plague, God told Moses that with this tenth plague Pharaoh would finally let the people go and he instructed Moses to ready the Israelites for their deliverance. That night the 10th plague struck Egypt. Every firstborn Egyptian male was killed by God s angel. Pharaoh in great agitation and fear told Moses to take the Israelites and get out. Great companies of them, thousands of Israelites led by Moses fled from Egypt and headed for the Red Sea. Pharaoh, however, gathered his army to pursue Israel and bring back his slaves. God opened the sea and all the Israelites passed through on dry ground, but Pharaoh s army was drowned as the waters closed over the sea again. Can you imagine the celebration when the Israelites looked back and saw the Egyptians drowned in the sea? They were safe. They were free. Moses, finally, after seeing God s miraculous deliverance and all of God s mighty displays of power, worshipped God as his God. His faith was now solid and he would need that faith in the coming years: Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord: "I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. The horse and its rider he has hurled into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father's God, and I will exalt him... Exodus 15:1-2 NIV * * * * Experiencing the Presence and Provision of God After the great jubilation and celebration for their deliverance from Egypt, Israel and Moses their leader now faced a wilderness with no provision of food or water for this great number, possibly two million people. Just imagine Moses realization that he now must lead these people through a barren wilderness. The next years would bring many lessons for Moses and Israel in faith and obedience. They were completely dependent on God. Just three days journey into the desert brought the first lesson. There was no water for man or beast to drink. The people grumbled but Moses turned to God and God provided. This was just the first of many examples of God s provision. During these years in the wilderness Moses, through great trial and suffering, learned that God was caring for Israel each step of the way. God provided not only the basic necessities but he also pro- Page 3 vided laws and teachings to transform this band of slaves into a nation of people ready to enter the Promised Land. He gave them power to overcome enemy armies that tried to withstand them. In addition, God gave to Moses the instructions for the tabernacle, a place of worship, and the installation of a priesthood to teach the people about God. Israel was not just to be a nation but they were to be a holy nation, God s own (Continued on page 4)

Experiencing the Presence and Provision of God (Continued from page 3) people, a people blessed by God: Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land that the Lord promised on oath to your forefathers. Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you. Deuteronomy 8:1-5 See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the Lord my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. Observe them carefully And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today? Deuteronomy 4:5-8 NIV All through the wilderness God s presence was evident by a cloud by day and pillar of fire by night that led the way to each new encampment. In fact, God sent a special angel that guarded them. So the cloud of the Lord was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel during all their travels. Exodus 40:36-38 "See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him. Exodus 23:20-22 NIV Each day when the manna appeared on the ground and water was provided, Moses would realize the great love that God had for his people. When he saw the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night, he knew that God s presence and protecting angel were there with them. Experiencing the Wrath and the Patience of God The children of Israel had a short memory. Even though God had shown them his power and might in sending the plagues against the gods of Egypt and in defeating the army of Pharaoh, in their fear they forgot. While Moses was on the mountain receiving the law and the ten commandments on tablets of stone, the people panicked. They thought they were deserted and so gathered around Aaron and complained. Aaron collected gold jewelry from the Israelites and made an idol a calf idol of gold. See, Israel, here is your god. The people had a god they could see and so they brought sacrifices and had a feast. Was it any surprise that the LORD was angry with this people? Then the Lord said to Moses, "Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt. They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, 'These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.' "I have seen these people," the Lord said to Moses, "and they are a stiffnecked people. Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation." Exodus 32:7-10 NIV So Moses went back to the Lord and said, "Oh, what a Page 4 great sin these people have committed! They have made themselves gods of gold. But now, please forgive their sin but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written." The Lord replied to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out of my book. Now go, lead the people to the place I spoke of, and my angel will go before you. Exodus 32:31-35 NIV Moses the shepherd of the people understood the anger of the LORD but pleaded that God would forgive them. This is not the only time that Moses saw the anger of God towards this people and asked that they be forgiven. When they reached the borders of (Continued on page 5)

Experiencing the Wrath and the Patience of God (Continued from page 4) the Promised Land, twelve spies, one from each tribe, were sent to spy out the land. Two of the spies, Joshua and Caleb, came back with a good report but the others were afraid. They reported that the land was good and bountiful but the people there were powerful and the cities fortified. Because of their fear they incited the people to rebel against God and forget all that he had done for them. They grumbled against Moses and Aaron and wanted to go back to Egypt. Perhaps Moses remembered his own fear and hesitancy in the wilderness when God had called him from the fiery bush and this gave him some empathy for these people who were so afraid, so fearful that they did not remember God s power and glory. But Moses had learned. He had taken that one step of faithful obedience in going back to Egypt to lead the people to deliverance and God had shown him his glory. With each day Moses learned more about God, he saw and believed his love and care for them. He also knew God s compassion and that he is a merciful and forgiving God and so interceded and asked for forgiveness for the people. Both times when God gave him the opportunity to turn his back on Israel, when God said that he would destroy the rebellious Israelites and make him into a great nation, he instead responded with love and care for his people as a true shepherd cares for his sheep. Coming to know the true, living God had transformed Moses to be caring, compassionate, merciful and patient. Experiencing the Glory of God An amazing testament to Moses are God s words concerning him: "Listen to my words: "When a prophet of the Lord is among you, I reveal myself to him in visions, I speak to him in dreams. But this is not true of my servant Moses; he is faithful in all my house. With him I speak face to face, clearly and not in riddles; he sees the form of the Lord " Numbers 12:5-8 God commended Moses for his faithful service. God spoke to him and revealed himself to him because he knew that Moses was his faithful servant. Moses wanted to know God. He wanted to understand Him and be close to him. In another place God spoke to Moses directly and told him that he was pleased with him: And the Lord said to Moses, "I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name." Exodus 33:15-17 NIV It was at this time that Moses asked God to see his glory: And he said, "Please, show me Your glory." Then He said, "I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion." But He said, "You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live." And the Lord said, (Continued on page 6) When Will Jesus Return to the Earth? 2,000 years ago Jesus Christ promised I will come again John 14:3 But, He has not yet returned. 6 Experiencing the Glory of God (Continued from page 5) "Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen." Exodus 33:18-23 NKJV God did reveal his glory and declare his Name to Moses. He made himself known to him: So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, as the Lord had commanded him; and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands. Then the Lord came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord. And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation." Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. Exodus 34:4-9 NIV Moses, the faithful servant, the loving shepherd of his sheep, the man that was known as the meekest man on earth, the man who sought to see the glory of God, was given the blessing of seeing the glory and majesty of God. A Prophet Like Unto Moses Moses led the Israelites for 40 years to the edge of the Promised Land. God told him that he would see the Land but would not be able to enter. Moses died in faith. He was not able to enter the Promised Land but had hope of a resurrection a time when he would finally receive that inheritance that is promised to all God s people: These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect. Hebrews 11:39-40 NIV God gave the promise that he would raise up a prophet like Moses from among his own brothers and the people could trust this prophet to speak the words of God and to lead them to God: The Lord said to me: "What they say is good. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account. Deuteronomy 18:15-20 NIV As Jesus was growing up and learning from the scriptures, he would have found these verses and know that they spoke of him. Here are a few of the things that Jesus could have learned from Moses, the servant of the LORD: (Continued on page 7) Free Booklet Offer - The Bible Hope We would like to send you a very helpful booklet entitled The Bible Hope. 7 A Prophet Like Unto Moses (Continued from page 6) Moses: Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth. Jesus: Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart. (Numbers 12:3; Matthew 11:28-30 KJV) Moses: But this is not true of my servant Moses; he is faithful in all my house. Jesus: Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. (Numbers 12:7 NIV; Philippians 2:5-8 ESV) Moses: So Moses went back to the Lord and said, "Oh, what a great sin these people have committed! They have made themselves gods of gold. But now, please forgive their sin but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written." Jesus: "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. (Exodus 32:31-32; John 10:11-12 NIV) Moses: Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, who did all those miraculous signs and wonders the Lord sent him to do in Egypt Jesus: Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. (Deuteronomy 34:10-12; John 20:30-31 NIV) These are just a few of the things that Jesus would have learned about the prophet that he was to be like. He would remember that God had called Moses his faithful servant, that God had spoken face -to-face with Moses, that he was pleased with him, and that he had revealed his glory to him. With all this though, Jesus knew that his work was even greater than Moses work. What he learned from Moses was a beginning in understanding the work that God purposed in his Son. Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's house, testifying to what would be said in the future. But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. Hebrews 3:1-6 NIV But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. "The LORD is my portion," says my soul, "therefore I will hope in him." - Lamentations 3:21-24 ESV Are you currently attending a weekly Bible Class?
