4 Names of God: Invitation to know GOD through His Revealed Names Jeremiah 9: Thus says the LORD: Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; 24 But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the LORD, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. What shall I say to them? 14 God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM ; and He said, Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, I AM has sent me to you. 15 God, furthermore, said to Moses, Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations. 6

7 This Name was considered by the Jews to be too HOLY to be uttered. YAHWEH (SOMETIMES YAH OR JAH) In the Anglicized version JEHOVAH Commonly mentioned as the Lord or God and is mentioned more than 6500 times in the Old Testament. 7

8 The progressive and cumulative revelation of God s name to His people Ex 6:2-6 2 God spoke further to Moses and said to him, I am the LORD; 3 and I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name, LORD, I did not make Myself known to them. 4 I also established My covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they sojourned. 5 Furthermore I have heard the groaning of the sons of Israel, because the Egyptians are holding them in bondage, and I have remembered My covenant. 6 Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage. I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. 8

9 I AM is a Redemptive and Covenantal name This redemptive name of I AM is the basis for other or future revelation of God through HIS compound names (covenantal names) An example of a compound name. In Ex 15:26 He said, If you listen carefully to the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you. Yahweh Rapha or Jehovah Rapha. 9

10 I am that I am ; Ehyeh asher ehyeh-the SELF-EXISTENT AND ETERNAL GOD; a declaration of the Divine Nature, the active manifestation of the Divine existence. 1. SELF EXISTENT 2. ETERNAL Three aspects or perspectives of HIS ETERNAL nature. 10

11 SELF EXISTENT Self-Existent God The Definition of Aseity When we talk about the character of God, we realize that His incommunicable attributes, such as being a selfexistent God, cannot be seen. An incommunicable attribute refers to an attribute that God does not share or pass on to us, such as omnipresence God s independence, or self-existence, is defined as: God does not need us or the rest of creation for anything, yet we and the rest of creation glorify him and bring him joy. 1 Sometimes God s self-existence is referred to as His aseity (from the Latin words a + se, which mean existence derived from itself, having no other source ). 2 People may assume that God created human beings because He needed companionship and was lonely. This would mean that God is not entirely independent of creation. Or, in order for God to find complete satisfaction and happiness, He would need to create humans to fulfill His existence. In John 17:5, Jesus prays, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. There was love and communication between the Father and the Son long before creation. Sharing the glory between the Father and Son provided a fellowship with no shortcomings. By His very nature, the Scriptures remind us that He is a self-existent God. He was never created and never came into being. You are worthy...to receive glory, honor, and power, for you created all things, and by your will (for your pleasure not for necessity) they were created and have their being (Revelation 4:11). While these are words of adoration, it is affirmation that God preserves and is the final cause of all things. 11

12 God s Self Existence Isaiah 43:10 You are My witnesses, says the LORD, And My servant whom I have chosen, That you may know and believe Me, And understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, Nor shall there be after Me. 12

13 Col 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. Rev 4:11 You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created. 13

14 ETERNAL Translated from OLAM as forever, perpetual in other words never ending. GOD EXISTS FOREVER WILL ALWAYS EXIST. WILL NEVER CEASE TO EXIST. AN IMMORTAL. 14

15 Deut 32: 40 Indeed, I lift up My hand to heaven, And say, as I live forever, Ps 9:7 But the LORD abides forever; He has established His throne for judgment, Ps 102:12 But You, O LORD, abide forever, And Your name to all generations. 15

16 1 Tim 6 14 that you keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which He will bring about at the proper time He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen. Rev 4:10 the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying 16

17 ES: Mr CHINA Mr China the key sponsor for a business deal died! Imagine If we really get to know Yahweh, to really walk with and build our lives on the ONE Who will never cease to exist. Who will always be Who He is. And who really loves you and is for you. 17

18 ETERNAL Second aspect of the Eternal God Speaks of His un-changeableness. His immutability. Mal 3:6 For I am the LORD (Yahweh), I change not; therefore you sons of Jacob are not consumed. James 1:17 (NET) All generous giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or the slightest hint of change. 18

19 Ps 102: 25 Of old You laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands. 26 They will perish, but You will endure; Yes, they will all grow old like a garment; Like a cloak You will change them, And they will be changed. 27 But You are the same, And Your years will have no end Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. 19

20 HIS GODLIKE attributes, character, nature and virtues remain unchanged and constant FOREVER. Examples: The fastest man in 1988 (Olympics) is no longer the fastest man today because he is 30 years older. His record has been broken many times since his triumph. In general time causes deterioration of strength in a person (body and mind). God s unlimited POWER, WISDOM, UNDERSTANDING, HOLINESS, RIGHTEOUSNESS, LOVE, MERCY, COMPASSIONATE, GOODNESS, etc will remain unchanged forever (with no deterioration or increase). 20

21 Ps 119:89 Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven. Number 23:19 God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? 21

22 What does this mean for us. God s un-changeableness gives us FULL assurance that He is willing and able to fulfill HIS WORD He has made (to individuals, collectively to a group of people, to a city, a nation or nations). HIS WORD HERE includes HIS PROMISES of BLESSINGS; AND For e.g. Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. 22

23 Isa 1:19 If you are willing and obedient, You shall eat the good of the land; HIS WARNINGS of JUDGEMENT Matt 12:36 But I say to you that for every idle word (idle means careless, useless, thoughtless) men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 23

24 1 Cor 10: But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. 6 Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. 7 And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. 8 Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell; 9 nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; 10 nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11 Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 24

25 ETERNAL 3 rd Aspect THE ONE WHO DWELLS IN ETERNITY. Isa 57:15 For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, With him who has a contrite and humble spirit, To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones 25

26 ETERNITY IS A REALM WHERE TIME BECOMES TIMELESS For us TIME is a successions of moments, one after another. These time moments can become an event. GOD created all things including TIME and HE sits outside of Time. For God He has perfect knowledge of the Past, Present and the future. God has no beginning, end, or succession of moments in his own being, and he sees all time equally vividly, yet God sees events in time and acts in time. 26

27 Notes: Jude 1:25, there existed a realm before time began (time was created) A thousand years to the Lord is like less than one day. Ps 90:4 Psalm 139; all the days fashioned for us are in our scroll. Eph 1:4 we have been chosen before the foundation of the world. John 4-Jesus knew about the Samaritan woman s past. Isa 46:10 Prophecy- specific details of the FIRST coming of Jesus and likewise the specific events to happen according to prophecies given to HIS true prophets. 27

28 Jude 1: (JB PHILLIPS) Now to him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glory without fault and with unspeakable joy, to the only God, our saviour, be glory and majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before time was, now, and in all ages to come, amen. Isa 46:10 Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying, My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure, (NLT) Only I can tell you the future before it even happens. Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish. 28

29 Ps 90:4 For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it is past, And like a watch in the night (3 hours). 2 Peter 3:8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 29

30 Ps 139: 16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them. Eph 1:4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 30

31 I AM Another aspect of God who inhabits eternity He is The only ONE who can dwell in the perfect present. For us who are subject to time we cannot live in the perfect present. Example: When I speak out a sentence I feel healthy! By the time I have finished uttering the word healthy the words I feel are already in my past because time is a succession of moments, one after another. 31

32 His Eternal nature (as the one who inhabits eternity) of the I AM (not I was and I will be) enables HIM to be ACTUALLY PERFECTLY PRESENT at any point in TIME. The one who dwells in eternity is not bounded by time, space or matter. Example; Ps 139:7-10 (different places and different people) Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? 8 If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. 9 If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 10 Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me. Psalm 46:1 For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. According for Alamoth. A song. God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble Ever present is also translated always, very readily found. He is PRESENT! 32

33 Summary of implications 1. Because of His Self Existence, HE is not dependent on anything or anyone, He remains Who He is and nothing and no one or force can alter His existence and therefore Who HE is. 2. He has and will continue to exists forever; 3. His GODLIKENESS, i.e. nature, character, virtues and attributes are unchangeable; and 4. He who dwells in eternity and exists outside of time, knows our past and present perfectly knows our end from the beginning. He is the only perfectly present One. Ever (very, ready) present help to us. ES-risk of being misunderstood and His people being offended. 33

34 JESUS the I AM. John 8:56-59 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad. Then the Jews said to Him, You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham? Jesus said to them, Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM. Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. 34

35 JESUS the I AM. John 18:4-6 (Complete Jewish Bible) 4 Yeshua, who knew everything that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, Whom do you want? 5 Yeshua from Natzeret, they answered. He said to them, I AM. Also standing with them was Y hudah, the one who was betraying him. 6 When he said, I AM, they went backward from him and fell to the ground. 35

36 Matt 28: Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. I AM and remain present 36

37 Additional Notes Called to also address Him as YAH, JAH, JEHOVAH, the LORD Ps 68:4 Sing to God, sing praises to His name; Extol Him who rides on the clouds, By His name YAH, And rejoice before Him. Ps 135:1-3 (NKJV) 1. Praise the LORD! Praise the name of the LORD; Praise Him, O you servants of the LORD! 2. You who stand in the house of the LORD, In the courts of the house of our God, 3. Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good; Sing praises to His name, for it is pleasant. 37

39 Additional notes The 7 I AM s of Jesus in John and the book of Revelation. The Gospel Of John Jesus says, I am the bread of life (6:35). Spiritually hungry? Jesus is the bread of life. Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst (John 6:35). 2. Jesus says, I am the light of the world (8:12). Spiritually blind, groping around in the dark looking for meaning and enlightenment? Jesus is the light of the world. Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life (John 8:12). 39

40 3. Jesus says, I am the door (10:9). Seeking the door to salvation and to heaven? Jesus is the door. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture (John 10:9). 4. Jesus says, I am the Good Shepherd (10:11). Wandering? Lost? Jesus is the Good Shepherd. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep (John 10:11). 5. Jesus says, I am the resurrection and the life. Spiritually dead and dying? Fearing death? Jesus is the resurrection and the life. Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this? (John 11:25-26). 40

41 6. Jesus says, I am the way, and the truth, and the life (14:6). Wondering what is the way? Unsure of the truth? Searching for the meaning of life? Jesus is the way, and the truth, and the life. Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6). 7. Jesus says, I am the true vine (15:1). Wanting to live a life of meaning and fruitfulness? Jesus is the true vine. I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing (John 15: 1, 5). 41
