1 1 2 11/16/08 Exodus We are continuing in our verse by verse commentary of the book of Exodus. We now come to the altar of incense that was to stand in the tabernacle of meeting. Remember that the courtyard was 150 feet by 75 feet, which marked the perimeter of the location of the Tabernacle. 1. The Tabernacle had two rooms, the holy place 15 feet wide, 15 feet high, by 30 feet long. a. As you entered on the north side was the table of shewbread. b. On the south side was the lamp stand. c. Before the veil that led to the Holy of Holies was the altar of incense. 2. The Holy of Holies was separated by a veil and was15 feet wide, 15 feet high and15 feet long, a perfect cube. a. The only articles was the ark of the covenant, which had a mercy seat, with two Cherubim at each end, with their wings crossing and looking down to the mercy seat, where God would appear to the High Priest once a year on the Day of Atonement. b. The articles inside the ark were three. 1) The two tables of stone written with the finger of God the Ten Commandments. 2) The rod of Aaron that God caused to bud, as a sign of his office. 3) The pot of manna, which God fed the children of Israel for forty years in the wilderness. 30:1-10 The alter of incense. 30:1-5 The specifics of the altar. 1) The altar to burn incense was to be made of acacia wood. vs. 1 2) The dimensions of the alter were stipulated. vs. 2 a) The length and wide was to be 18 inches, making it square. vs. 2a-b b) The height was to be 36 inches. vs. 2c c) The horns were to be of one piece. vs. 2d 3) The altar was to be overlaid with pure gold, the top, all within and without, including the horns, with a crown molding all around the top. vs. 3 a) The crown like the table of shewbread. Ex. 25:24 b) The horns symbolized power. c) The gold, deity. 4) The alter was to be transported. vs. 4 a) Two gold rings were to be made under the molding on both its sides. vs. 4a
2 3 4 b) A total of four, in order that two poles be inserted to bear the alter. vs. 4b-c 5) The poles were to be made of acacia wood also, overlay with gold. vs. 5 30:6 The location of the altar. 1) The And you shall put it before the veil that is before the ark of the Testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the Testimony, where I will meet with you. vs. 6a 2) The alter went in front of the veil separating the holy place from the Holy of Holies, in front of the Ark of the covenant. vs. 6b 3) The alter would be before the mercy seat that covered the ark, where God would meet with the High Priest. vs. 6b-c a) The alter would become one with the Holy of Holies on the Day of Atonement, Oct. 10. b) The alter of incense represents the prayer of the saints before God to the mediator Christ Jesus. Jn. 17:1-26, Heb. 7:25, 13;15, Rev. 5:8, 8:3-4 30:7-10 The procedures of the altar. 1) Aaron was to burn sweet incense every morning on the alter of incense; when he tends the lamps. vs. 7 a) Without doubt, the Catholic Church applies this to her practices of the priesthood. b) The only problem is that Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment and His priesthood is not transferable. Heb. 7:24 2) The lighting the lamps. vs. 8-9 a) Aaron was to lights the lamps at twilight and burn incense on the alter, a perpetual incense before the LORD throughout your generations. vs. 8 b) Aaron was not to offer strange incense on it, or a burnt offering, or a grain offering; nor pour a drink offering on it. vs. 9 3) The function of the alter of incense on the Day of Atonement. vs. 10 a) Aaron was to make atonement upon the horns of the alter of incense, once a year with the blood of the sin offering of atonement. vs. 10a b) Aaron was to do this once a year to make atonement upon it throughout the generations. vs. 10b c) It was most holy to the LORD, the tenth day of the seventh month. vs. 10c 30:11-16 The census of the people was to be through the temple tax.
