Welcome to KidVid Cinema You may be used to children s videos and programs that focus simply on keeping kids entertained. Well, get ready for something amazing! At KidVid Cinema, children will watch the KidVid Stories DVD, where they meet five real kids who are relying on God s power as they face life s challenges. Day 1: Ukrainian brothers Deacon, Hudson, and Ben needed a family, and God provided in a big way! Day 2: Twins Ben and Sam share God s love by sewing soft, colorful stuffed monsters for kids who are hurting. Day 3: When Cole s dad got really sick, Cole and his brothers had to hold on to God s mighty power. Day 4: Philip shares how he had to forgive his little brother Timothy for breaking a special, treasured toy. Day 5: Olivia and Elyse trust God to help them share the news of Jesus love with their uncle. Bible Memory Buddies Come to Life! At KidVid Cinema, kids will receive their special Bible Memory Buddies. Each colorful tag has the day s Bible Memory Buddy on the front and the day s Bible verse on the back. All five Buddies can be carried on the Everest Carabiners so kids can take them everywhere. And the Buddies are extra special because they include a FREE downloadable app that makes the Buddy come to life, moving and talking on the screen. Just scan the code in the margin with your smartphone, ipod, or tablet, or go to vbsbuddies.com to download the Bible Memory Buddies app. The app works with all five Everest Bible Memory Buddies. Keep the app open. Lay one of the Bible Memory Buddies on a table a few feet away from you. Point your device at it (as if you re going to take a picture) and watch what happens! Field Test Finding Our staff watched kids absorb each story with rapt attention. And in follow-up discussions, kids had a lot to say about things that affect their own lives. These real-life stories will connect with children of all ages, engaging them in faith conversations, transforming hearts, and helping them discover God s mighty power. vbsbuddies.com

Field Test Finding We ve discovered that if the room is crowded and noisy, kids have a hard time focusing on the important life application discussions. Field Test Finding It s amazing how a few tweaks to a room can spark kids imagination and also help them feel special and valued! Hold on! Here s What You Need to Know! ss Work with your VBS Director to select a room for KidVid Cinema. Choose a room that can be partially darkened to watch the video. Be sure your room is large enough to have at least 5 to 6 feet between each Crew. The extra space allows for more private Crew discussions. ss Make your cinema spectacular! Remove chairs so everyone can sit on the floor. Cover walls with the Starry Night Plastic Backdrop to help kids feel like they re in a base camp at night! In a corner, set up your small tent, and place a sleeping bag inside or nearby. Set the lantern near the tent entrance. ss Find out how many Climbing Crews you ll have at each KidVid Cinema session. At Everest VBS, kids join small mixed-age groups, called Climbing Crews, with up to five kids plus a Crew Leader. The total number of Climbing Crews at VBS are divided into four larger groups that rotate through the stations together, so you can expect one-fourth of the Crews to report for each session of KidVid Cinema. ss Set up the TV and DVD player. Use a large-screen TV, if possible. Set up your equipment near an electrical outlet so kids don t trip over the cords. If you must stretch cords across the room, tape them to the floor with duct tape or electrical tape. Practice connecting the TV and DVD player, and then try playing, stopping, and moving between chapters of the DVD. ss Preview each day s DVD segment. Be sure to read the corresponding discussion questions in this manual ahead of time. Each day s video segment is approximately 5 minutes long. ss Call on kids by roles. At Everest VBS, kids choose important Climbing Crew roles. Each station will call on a different role to make sure all kids get to shine! At KidVid Cinema, you ll always call on the Guide. s s Repeat the Bible Point often. It s important to say the Bible Point just as it s written. Repeating the Bible Point will help children remember it and apply it to their lives. Kids will be listening for the Bible Point so they can shout the response, Hold on! Each time kids shout Hold on! they ll grasp their forearms in front of them. (See the photo.) ss Learn how to use the Bible Memory Buddies app. You ll need to download this FREE app onto a smartphone or tablet ahead of time. Get a set of Buddies from your Director so you can practice using it and your demonstration to the Crews will be seamless!

Bible Story: God provides for Elijah. Bible Point: (1 Kings 17) God has the power to provide. Key Verse: And God will generously provide all you need. DAY 1 (2 Corinthians 9:8) Did You Know? s Elijah was a prophet in Israel during the rule of King Ahab, whose reign is placed around B.C. Elijah called for people, specifically the rulers of Israel and Judah, to put their faith in God rather than the false god Baal. s Elijah s name means my God is Yahweh. Yahweh, meaning Lord, is the Hebrew word for God. Another way to phrase it is the Lord is my God. Even Elijah s name reminded God s people to repent and once again worship God. s Elijah spread his message about God throughout the capital and major cities of the kingdom. The Bible says Elijah came from a land east of the Jordan River, from a place called Gilead. This means that the urban people Elijah spoke to probably looked down on him, regarding him as a simple, uneducated country man. What a great reminder that God can use anybody to do his work! s Baal was known as the god of lightning and storm; he was believed to have control over the fertility of the land and crops. God sent a great drought over the land by withholding the rain, showing King Ahab and the people of Israel that Baal had no power. Why It Matters Although most kids at your VBS probably have a place to sleep and food to eat, they still have other real needs maybe a child s parent lost his or her job, or perhaps a child feels friendless at school. Help children understand that God is bigger than any of those needs, and he has the power to provide. Give kids the reassurance that they can hold on to God s mighty power to provide for their needs. You ll also have the opportunity to encourage kids to recognize and thank God for providing their most fundamental blessings things like clean drinking water, the privilege of coming to church to learn about Jesus, and love from friends and family members.

DAY 1 God has the power to provide. At Everest VBS, the daily Bible Point is carefully integrated into each station s activities for unforgettable Bible learning. Encourage Climbing Crews to sit on the floor in knee-to-knee Crew circles. Knee-to-knee Crew circles ensure that kids are sitting close enough together to hear each other during discussions. When everyone is seated, introduce yourself. Say: Welcome to KidVid Cinema! We re going to have an awesome week together! We ll watch videos about real kids telling their real stories about God s power in their lives! And you ll each get an amazing Bible Memory Buddy every day that will remind you of God s mighty power! 8 Trail Tip There s a lot to accomplish in KidVid today, so keep things moving along. You don t want to miss out on any of the fun! Watch for God Say: Your Crew Leaders and I have a surprise for you. We want to give you something that will help you watch for God all the time! This wristband says Watch for God (hold up your arm, showing your Watch For God Wristband), and it can remind you to watch for what God is doing all around you. When we see God at work, we call that a God Sighting. Share your own God Sighting, such as someone who showed God s love to you that day or something beautiful in nature you saw. At Everest VBS, each day in Base Camp Sing & Play you ll talk in your Crews about ways you ve seen evidence of God, and then you ll get to hang up a God Sightings Flag. Your Watch For God Wristband can remind you to keep your eyes open to watch for God right here in [name of your community]. You can wear this band on your wrist, your arm, or even on your ankle wherever you ll see it and remember to watch for God. I hope you ll wear it every day! Distribute Wristbands Say: Crew Leaders, here s how we ll give out the wristbands. Since we re learning about God s power, let s have everyone stand up and show your amazing muscles! Demonstrate by flexing your biceps. Crew Leaders, you ll go to each Crew member and say, [Name], you can watch for God this week! Then you ll slip a Watch For God Wristband over one of his or her fists. Continue around your Crew circle, giving each person a wristband in the same way. The last person can give the Crew Leader a wristband, too! Give Guides enough wristbands for everyone in their Crews. Pause as Crew Leaders distribute the wristbands. When everyone in a Crew has received a wristband, Crew members can sit in their circles again.

Watch the KidVid Stories DVD Say: I m excited to watch for God this week! And I m also excited to watch our KidVid videos! DVD Day 1 Turn off the lights, and play the Day 1 segment of the KidVid Stories DVD. When the segment ends, turn on the lights. Say: Wow, what an amazing story! Have kids discuss the following questions in their Crews. After each question, invite a few kids to share their answers. Ask: How did God provide for the boys in this story? Talk in your Crew about that. When is a time God provided for your family? Tell your Crew. DAY 1 Say: Thanks for sharing those answers. God has mighty power, and he uses it to provide for us. It s amazing how much God loves us! The next time you re in a situation where you need God to provide for your family, think of this video. Remember that God has the power to provide. (Hold on!) Explore the Key Bible Verse Say: You know, that video fits so perfectly with today s Bible verse. Hold up your Bible. I can t wait to share it with you! Give each Crew two Bibles, marked to today s Bible verse (2 Corinthians 9:8). Listen to what the Bible says. Have the Guide in each Crew read the verse aloud, while the other kids follow along. The verse says: And God will generously provide all you need. You know, for a short sentence, there s a lot going on in this verse! Ask: First, does anyone know what generously means? Let kids call out answers. Say: To provide generously means to give more than expected. God won t just provide, he ll generously provide! God didn t just find three different families for the three different brothers, although that would have been great; God provided one perfect family so the brothers could stay together! I love how God provides! Right now, I d love to provide a fun way for you to remember today s Bible verse! Field Test Finding Kids shared such great ways that God provided for their families. Our favorite? God finally gave my uncle a wife. Trail Tip Repeat kids answers for the whole group so everyone can hear them. Kids are often softspoken, so repeating their answers lets everyone hear their words of wisdom!

Introduce Klymer Hold up a set of Bible Memory Buddies. Say: Each day at KidVid Cinema, you ll get a new Bible Memory Buddy to add to your very own collection. Each Buddy will have the day s Bible verse printed right on it. Point to the verses on the backs of the Buddies. That way, you can learn the verse and what it means and remember it forever! So here s our first Bible Memory Buddy of the week! Ta da! Hold up the Klymer Bible Memory Buddy. His name is Klymer, and he s a snow leopard. Snow leopards are one of the few animals that can survive in the Himalayan mountains, where Mount Everest is. Turn to Klymer as if talking to him. How can you do that, Klymer? Turn back to Crews. God provides all Klymer needs to survive in a cold, harsh climate. Klymer has a thick fur coat to keep him warm and big paws so he can walk on the snow and ice! So cool! Because God provides what Klymer needs in his environment, we can remember that God provides for us, too! And Klymer has today s Bible verse printed right on him. So when you need God s provision, just flip Klymer over and read the verse. Then you ll remember that God has the power to provide. (Hold on!) Trail Tip Kids will see a video introduction to each Buddy when they attend Base Camp Sing & Play. The focus on each day s Buddy in your station will solidify the connection between the Bible Memory Buddies and Scripture! Distribute Bible Memory Buddies Say: Each day, your Crew Leader will give you a new Bible Memory Buddy to wear at VBS. At the end of the week you can take your whole collection home with you! And tomorrow I ll tell you about another fun thing these Bible Buddies do! Give each Crew Leader enough Klymer Bible Memory Buddies and carabiners for each person to have one. Crew members, hold out your paws like this. Demonstrate holding your hands in a cupped position. Listen to the special words your Crew Leader says as you receive your Bible Memory Buddy!

Explain to Crew Leaders that they will put a Klymer Bible Buddy and a carabiner in the cupped hands of each Crew member. Then, covering the child s hands with their own, Crew Leaders will look at the child and say: [Child s name], God has the power to provide for you. Be sure Crew Leaders take the time to look each child in the eyes and say the special affirmation while handing out the Bible Memory Buddies. It s such a wonderful way to make kids feel God s love! CD Track 4 Play I Sing the Mighty Power of God softly while Crew Leaders distribute the Klymer Bible Memory Buddies. Say: You can take Klymer with you wherever you go! Hold up an Everest Carabiner, and show kids how the Bible Memory Buddy attaches. Crew Leaders can help kids put their Buddies on the carabiners, if necessary. As kids are working, give each Crew a basket of fine-tip markers. Have kids write their names or initials on their carabiners. Encourage kids to wear their Bible Memory Buddies until Summit Celebration. Offer a Closing Prayer Say: God loves you so much. And he loves to provide for you! Before we go, let s thank God for loving us. When I count to 3, wave your hands in the air and shout to God, Thank you for providing! Count to 3, and lead kids in the shout. Encourage kids to come back tomorrow so they can watch another KidVid story and receive the next Bible Memory Buddy. When you hear the Director s signal, dismiss kids to their next destination. Field Test Finding The kids and volunteers loved the Bible Memory Buddies! If they happened to miss a day of VBS, it was the first thing they asked for when they returned! Trail Tip The Crew Leaders can put the Bible Memory Buddies into their Crew bags at Summit Celebration. Kids will take their Buddies home on the last day of VBS. What a great way to keep the Bible learning going!

DAY 2 Bible Story: Bible Point: God speaks to Elijah. God has the power to comfort. (1 Kings 19) Key Verse: He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. (2 Corinthians 1:4) Did You Know? s As Elijah fled from King Ahab and his wife, Jezebel, Elijah hit one of the lowest points in his life he even told God he had had enough and asked God to end his life! No wonder Elijah desperately needed God s comfort. Jezebel, the powerful queen of Israel, wanted to kill him; he was the only prophet in Israel serving God, as Jezebel tried to have all the other prophets of God killed, and the few who were left were in hiding; and even after God had demonstrated his great power, Jezebel still wouldn t worship God. s Before Elijah began his 40-day trek to Mount Sinai, he stopped to rest under a broom tree. The broom tree is common in this desert wilderness (modern-day southern Palestine), and it would have been the only shrub big enough to offer Elijah any shade. The broom tree can grow to be 10 feet high. s Instead of appearing in the mighty wind, earthquake, or fire, God presented himself in a gentle whisper. Why? God had just shown his great power to the people of Israel by withholding the rain to create a significant drought and by sending down fire to consume the sacrifice offered by Elijah at Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18). But God revealed that he is more than just a powerful God who can control the elements of nature he is a God who is always present, sometimes revealed in overwhelmingly astounding ways and sometimes in the quiet. Why It Matters Our world is an imperfect place, and it s filled with things that make kids scared or sad or fearful hurtful words from a child at school, a frightening storm, a fight between parents. Kids find comfort in things like a warm hug, an encouraging word, or a cozy stuffed animal, but nothing compares to the comfort of knowing God is always by their side they are never alone! Today at VBS share with kids the encouraging message of God s peace and his ability to comfort us no matter what we might face in life.

DAY 2 At Everest VBS, the daily Bible Point is carefully integrated into each station s activities for unforgettable Bible learning. See how your station reinforces today s Bible Point. 14 Day 2 Day 2 Supplies s Watch For God Wristbands* (a few extras for newcomers) s Cliff Bible Memory Buddies* (1 per participant) s smartphone or tablet to demonstrate the Buddy app * available from Group Publishing or your Group VBS supplier Get Ready s s s s s s Cue the KidVid Stories DVD to the Day 2 segment. Hang the Day 2 Bible Verse Poster and Bible Point Poster. Place a bookmark at 2 Corinthians 1:4 in each Bible. Wear your Watch For God Wristband. Be sure you ve downloaded the Bible Memory Buddies app and have practiced how to use it so you can demonstrate. (See page 1 for instructions.) Play the Base Camp Sing & Play Music CD as Crews arrive. Share the Bible Point As Crews arrive, warmly welcome them back to KidVid Cinema, and invite them to sit in knee-to-knee Crew circles. Say: I m wearing my Watch For God Wristband. Wave your arm with the wristband in the air. How about you? Have kids wave their wristband arms in the air. I ve been watching for God everywhere! And I ve seen lots of ways God is working! One of the ways God works is by comforting us. Which brings us to today s Point: God has the power to comfort. (Hold on!) Ask: Who knows what comfort means? What does it mean to comfort someone? Let a few kids share their answers. Say: Yup, comfort means to make someone feel better. Ask: How does it feel to be comforted? Call out some words. Say: Yup again! It feels so good to be comforted, doesn t it? Today s KidVid story is about two real kids 11-year-old twins who have a special way of comforting others. I can t wait to find out more, but first I have a cheer I want us to shout together. Today s our second day together at KidVid Cinema, so let s celebrate! Jump up! Pause as kids stand. The cheer goes like this: 1, 2, 3, 4 God is for us, who needs more? Have everyone repeat the cheer with you a few times, shouting louder each time. Thanks for cheering with me! I just felt like shouting. Okay, now I can settle down. And you can sit down. Pause as kids sit. Now let s explore today s KidVid video together.

Watch the KidVid Stories DVD DVD Day 2 Turn off the lights, and play the Day 2 segment of the KidVid Stories DVD. When the segment ends, turn on the lights. Have kids discuss the following questions in their Crews. Ask: How would it make you feel if you got one of those monsters that Ben and Sam made? What would it be like to make something that comforts someone else? How would you feel then? Say: In your Crew, think of what that something could be! Come up with something new, like the monsters in our video something that could comfort someone else. You ll have 1 minute, and then you ll report back. Ready? Start thinking! Give Crews a minute to talk; then let each Crew briefly describe what comforting thing they came up with. Thanks for those comforting ideas! We all need comfort sometimes. And God is the best comforter of all time! Remember, no matter what situation you re in, God has the power to comfort. (Hold on!) Now let s meet today s Bible Memory Buddy so we can discover today s Bible verse! DAY 2 Explore the Key Bible Verse Hold up Cliff, today s Bible Memory Buddy. Say: This is Cliff, and he s a marmot. To be specific, he s a Himalayan long-tailed marmot. Cliff is cute and cuddly, and he has a nice soft coat. He can remind us of how soft and warm it feels to be comforted. Give each Crew two Bibles marked to 2 Corinthians 1:4. Let s see what Bible verse Cliff has printed on him. Ask the Guide in each Crew to read aloud 2 Corinthians 1:4 as other kids follow along in the Bibles. Repeat the verse: He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. Ask: What is a trouble you re going through right now where you need God s comfort? Maybe it s in your own life, or maybe your family is experiencing trouble. Talk in your Crew. Give Crews time to discuss. Ask: This verse says God comforts us in our own troubles so we can comfort others; who is someone you know who needs comforting? What are ways you could comfort that person? Say: Good ideas! This week, think of how God comforts you, and pass that comfort on! I think Cliff can be a good reminder! [ART: SHOT OF KIDS TALKING IN CREW]

Distribute Bible Memory Buddies Give Guides enough Bible Memory Buddies for their Crew. Say: Crew Leaders, here s how we ll give out our Cliff Bible Memory Buddies. Kids will sit in Crew circles. You ll invite Crew members one at a time to stand up next to you; you ll place one arm around the child s shoulders and give a gentle hug. With the other hand, give the child a Buddy while saying, [Child s name], God comforts you so you can comfort others. Each child will remain standing until everyone in the Crew has a Buddy. Demonstrate with a Crew Leader, if necessary. CD Track 8 Play Faith softly in the background as Crew Leaders give each child a Buddy in the way you demonstrated. Then Crew Leaders can help kids each attach the Buddy to the Everest Carabiner. Say: I hope that every time you look at Cliff, you ll remember today s Bible verse. Trail Tip Information about the Buddy app will be sent home with kids in multiple resources during Everest VBS. Parents (and you!) can also see how it works at vbsbuddies.com. [ART: SHOW THE APP IN ACTION WITH DAY 2 BUDDY.] See Cliff in Action Say: Here s something extra cool your Bible Memory Buddies can do; watch! Set the Cliff Buddy on the floor, and sit with the kids, facing the Buddy. (This allows children to see over your shoulder.) Open the Bible Buddy app, and point your smartphone or tablet at the Cliff Buddy, as if you re going to take a picture. Show how Cliff "comes to life, talking and moving around! Each one of your Bible Memory Buddies will have a special feature like this that your parents can decide to use. We ll send information home with you about that. Offer a Closing Prayer Say: Let s use the cheer we learned before as our closing prayer, okay? Each Crew will take a turn shouting the cheer. Then members of each Crew will put their right hands in the center of the circle. I ll count to 3 and then lead us in shouting a big Thank you, God! as we raise our hands high in the air. Ready? Have Crews stand in their Crew circles. Point to each Crew in turn, and have them shout, 1, 2, 3, 4 God is for us, who needs more? Then have everyone put their right hands in the center of their Crew circle. Count to 3, and lead everyone in raising their hands as you shout together, Thank you, God! Invite kids back to meet another special friend in tomorrow s KidVid story and receive another amazing Bible Memory Buddy. Dismiss Crews to their next destination when you hear the signal.

Bible Story: God heals Naaman. Bible Point: Key Verse: God has the power to heal. He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds. (2 Kings 5) DAY 3 (Psalm 147:3) Did You Know? s Naaman is described in 2 Kings 5:1 as having leprosy. Most Bible scholars agree there are two general types of leprosy described throughout Scripture. The first type is known today as Hansen s disease and is what most people associate with the word leprosy a contagious disease that disfigures the body and leads to an early death. The other reference to leprosy in Scripture describes more general skin diseases that, while significant, were less severe conditions although there was still a social stigma connected with them. Because Naaman s condition is not described as being contagious, he probably had this second, less severe type of leprosy. s To assist Naaman in seeking a cure for his leprosy, the king of Aram (Syria) sent Naaman with an introduction letter and gifts to present to the king of Israel. These gifts included 750 pounds of silver and 150 pounds of gold. That amount is astounding! Today that many pounds of silver and gold would be worth around three-quarters of a billion dollars! s Second Kings 5:17 says that Naaman took two loads of earth (soil) back home with him after he had been healed. In ancient Middle-Eastern culture, the identity of a god was often associated with the land where they were worshiped. Naaman took the soil back to Aram as a tangible reminder of what God had done for him; Naaman most likely would have used the soil to build an altar to God. Why It Matters Today s kids are used to instant gratification. Computers, smartphones, and tablets help kids connect with friends, information, and the world around them in seconds. As you talk about God s power to heal, you have the opportunity to remind kids that God s healing doesn t usually happen instantly. Sometimes healing can take a long time, whether it s a broken bone, an illness like cancer, or the healing of a relationship. And sometimes healing doesn t happen until we re in heaven with God. Help kids understand God s power to heal and the many different ways that healing may come. 15

DAY 3 God has the power to heal. At Everest VBS, the daily Bible Point is carefully integrated into each station s activities for unforgettable Bible learning. Invite them to sit in their knee-to-knee Crew circles. Say: Today we're discovering that God has the power to heal. (Hold on!) I can t wait to explore more about that! But first I want to hear what s been going on at Everest VBS. What s been your favorite part so far? Take a few answers. Wow, it sounds like you re having a great time! So am I! I m really enjoying getting to know each of you and getting to meet our KidVid friends and our Bible Memory Buddies. I m having a lot of fun, and I m so glad you re here with me! Explore the Key Bible Verse Say: Let s get started by reading today s special Bible verse. Distribute two marked Bibles to each Crew. Have the Guide in each Crew read aloud Psalm 147:3. I love this verse! Let s say it together, okay? Lead Crews in repeating the verse with you: He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds. You know, yesterday we learned that God has the power to comfort. (Hold on!) Well, today s Bible verse gives me a ton of comfort! Just think God, who made the whole universe, is ready and willing to heal my broken heart and bandage my wounds! The God of all Creation cares about me! And you! That s so incredible it s hard for me to wrap my brain around. But I think Mallory, our Bible Memory Buddy, can help!

Introduce Mallory Say: This is Mallory, a bar-headed goose. Hold up a Mallory Bible Memory Buddy. She can fly really high. In fact, when bar-headed geese migrate every spring, they have to fly over the tallest mountain range in the world. If you guessed that s the Himalayas, you re right. And that s where Mount Everest is! These birds can fly as high as some commercial airplanes do! The way Mallory can rise high and fly over a huge mountain reminds me of what we re learning today. No matter what big problem we re facing whether our bodies are hurt or our hearts are hurting God can rise above it and cover all our problems with his mighty love. His power covers every situation, and his love is always with us. When you need any kind of healing your body or your heart read the Bible verse printed on Mallory and remember that God has the power to heal. (Hold on!) Trail Tip Distribute Bible Memory Buddies Say: I want to give you your own Mallory Bible Memory Buddy to add to your collection. And since bar-headed geese can fly over mountains, I think Mallory should fly into your hands! Explain how Crew Leaders will distribute the Buddies to their Crew members. In each Crew, have kids stand in a line facing their Crew Leader. Have kids press fingers together over their heads like little mountain peaks. The Crew Leader will call a child by name, and that child will step behind the mountains. The Crew Leader will say, [Child s name], God has the power to heal! and gently toss a Mallory Buddy over the mountains to the waiting child. Continue until each child has a Buddy. Then kids can attach the Buddies to their carabiners. I hope you ll keep your Bible Memory Buddies close by, even after Everest VBS! Mallory can help you remember that God has the power to heal. (Hold on!) If you re giving the Crew Leaders Buddies, just let a volunteer in each Crew repeat the procedure to give the Crew Leader a Buddy.

Watch the KidVid Stories DVD Say: Today s Bible verse is about healing, so I bet our KidVid story has something to do with healing, too! Let's find out. DVD Day 3 Turn off the lights, and play the Day 3 segment of the KidVid Stories DVD. After the segment, stop the DVD and turn on the lights. Say: What a story! I m so grateful that Cole and his family shared their story with us. Now it s time for you to share your own stories right here in your Crew. Ask: Does Cole s story remind you of someone in your own life? Has anyone in your family ever been sick? Or maybe someone close to your family? Tell your Crew about that person and what happened. CD Track 9 DAY 3 Play Everlasting God quietly in the background as kids talk in their Crews. Give Crews plenty of time to talk, as probably almost everyone has someone in their family or circle of friends who's been sick. Give a 1-minute warning before turning off the CD player and calling attention back to yourself. If you have time, invite a few children to share their stories with the large group. Say: You know, believing in God doesn't mean that hard things will never happen. Sometimes people get sick and God chooses not to heal their bodies here on earth. But we know that for those who believe in Jesus, there s a place where there s complete healing no sickness at all! That place is heaven, and we ll hear more about it later in the week. But let s get back to healing. Just like it takes a bar-headed goose a while to fly over a mountain range, sometimes it takes a while for our bodies to heal. I have a friend who had cancer, and she had to go through a lot of treatments before she was healed. Maybe you know someone like that, too. And sometimes it s not our bodies that need healing. Listen to the first part of our Bible verse again: He heals the brokenhearted. Ask: When is a time your heart needed healing? Maybe you were sad or your feelings were hurt. Or maybe you had a broken relationship with a friend. Talk in your Crew about a time your heart needed healing. Crew Leaders, you can go first. Field Test Finding Kids had so much to share! We heard kids talk about times they were sad, hurt, frustrated and, more than we expected, angry. What a blessing VBS can be to give kids a safe place to talk about their feelings!

Give kids time to talk, and then use the Yak Bell to call attention back to yourself. Say: Thanks for sharing. God loves us so much that he can heal our bodies and our hearts. Offer a Closing Prayer Say: Make a heart shape like this with your hands. Bend your fingers and touch your fingertips and thumbs together in a heart. Pray: Dear God, thank you for your power to heal us. Thank you for loving us. In Jesus name, amen. Tell kids you hope everyone will come back tomorrow to KidVid Cinema! When you hear your Director s signal, dismiss kids to their next destination.

Bible Story: Jesus dies on a cross to take away our sins, then comes back to life. Bible Point: Key Verse: God has the power to forgive. You are a God of forgiveness. DAY 4 (Nehemiah 9:17) (Luke 22:31 24:12) Did You Know? s The Romans reserved crucifixion a cruel, painful, and slow way to die for criminals without Roman citizenship. Usually only slaves, rebels, and the worst political offenders received such a gruesome sentence. This horrible public punishment was meant to deter crime throughout the empire. s After being cruelly beaten, Jesus was forced by guards to carry one of the beams of the cross, a common practice in Bible times. Jesus carried this beam about a third of a mile, and the wood beam could have weighed as much as 125 pounds. s Luke is the only book of the Gospels that tells about Jesus forgiving the thief. Jesus tells the thief, I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise (Luke 23:43). The word paradise is only used three times in the New Testament. (It s also in 2 Corinthians 12:4 and Revelation 2:7). Some scholars believe the word refers to a place of rest between death and resurrection. s When Jesus died on the cross, the curtain in the inner sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two. This inner space, the Holy of Holies, was the earthly dwelling place of God s presence. God ordained that only the high priest could go past this curtain once a year. The torn curtain revealed that now, because of Jesus sacrifice, anyone who puts their faith in Jesus has access to God. Why It Matters Jesus lived a perfect life and was wrongly put to death. Everyone who witnessed Jesus death knew a great injustice had taken place. Jesus didn t deserve to die, but he still forgave the people who crucified him! Today help kids understand that because of Jesus sacrifice on the cross, we have been forgiven for our sins too. Share with kids the wonderful news that there is nothing they can do to make God love them less and nothing they can do that God won t forgive them for. God is able to forgive us an infinite amount of times he is the ultimate forgiver! 21

Day 4 Supplies s Pike Bible Memory Buddies* (1 per participant) * available from Group Publishing or your Group VBS supplier Welcome Crews When Crews arrive, invite them to sit in their knee-to-knee circles. Ask how everyone is doing and what they re enjoying about Everest VBS. Say: When I count to 3, shout out something you ve enjoyed so far at Everest VBS. And I mean shout! Ready? 1 2 3! Pause as kids shout. Cool! It sounds like you re really enjoying Everest VBS! One thing I ve really enjoyed at Everest is you! And I ve enjoyed introducing our Bible Memory Buddies each day. So are you ready to meet today s Buddy? Introduce Pike Say: This is such an amazing animal! Hold up a Pike Bible Memory Buddy. His name is Pike, and he s a markhor. A markhor is a wild mountain goat. As you can see, Pike has these very cool and very pointy curlicue horns. I don t know about you, but I think I d stay away from Pike s sharp horns. They could hurt! Markhors use those sharp horns when they fight with other animals. Discuss Bullies Say: You know, markhors aren t the only animals that get into scuffles. We human-type animals get into scuffles, too sharp words, disagreements, sometimes even arguments. Ask: When is a time you had a disagreement or sharp words with another person? Maybe you had to deal with a bully at school, or maybe you had an argument with your brother. Tell your Crew about that time.

DAY 4 Give ample time for each child to share. If necessary, remind Crew Leaders to make sure every child gets a turn to talk. Give a 1-minute warning to wrap up conversations. Say: Thanks for sharing. We ve all had people problems, right? I know I have! Sometimes it s hard to know how to handle those problems especially when we re feeling hurt or upset. But I think today s KidVid video can help us. Let s watch. Watch the KidVid Stories DVD DVD Day 4 Turn off the lights, and play the Day 4 segment of the KidVid Stories DVD. When the segment ends, stop the DVD and turn on the lights. Say: One brother in this story had to forgive the other. I m curious which boy you re most like. If you re usually the one who has to forgive other people, step over to this side of the room. Gesture toward one side of the room. If you re usually the one who needs to be forgiven, step over to this side of the room. Gesture toward the other side of the room. Let s see where we stand. You too, Crew Leaders! Wait for everyone to stand on one side of the room or the other. Sometimes we need to forgive others, and sometimes we need to be forgiven. That s true for all of us! Have kids sit with their Crews again. God helped Philip forgive his brother for breaking a special toy. Ask: When is a time you had to forgive someone? Maybe someone broke something of yours, like in the video. Or maybe someone hurt your feelings. Talk in your Crew about a time you needed to forgive someone. Allow time for kids to talk, giving a 1-minute warning when it s time to wrap up discussions. Ask a few willing kids to share. Say: That was a pretty easy question we all remember when someone did something to hurt us and needed our forgiveness. But what about the opposite? Ask: When is a time you were the one who needed to be forgiven a time when you did something wrong or hurtful? Talk in your Crew. Allow time for discussion, and then ask for a few reports. Say: Forgiveness is a big deal we all need it, and we all need to give it. But it s not always easy. Thankfully, that s not the way it is with God. Let me show you what I mean.

Explore the Key Bible Verse Distribute two Bibles, marked at Nehemiah 9:17, to each Crew. Have the Guide in each Crew read the entire verse aloud while kids follow along. Say: But you are a God of forgiveness, gracious and merciful, slow to become angry, and rich in unfailing love. Ask: Does anyone know what the words gracious and merciful mean? Let kids call out a few answers. Say: To be gracious and merciful means to be nice and full of forgiveness. That goes with the rest of this verse, too. God is forgiving and doesn t get mad right away, and his love never fails. Wow! That sure doesn t describe me! Sometimes I have trouble forgiving. And sometimes I get mad pretty quickly. Don t you? I m glad God is so good! Ask: Which part of this verse are you most thankful for? God s forgiveness? His love that never fails? How slow he is to get angry? Talk in your Crew about which part of God s description you re most thankful for, and why. Crew Leaders, you can start. Let Crews talk a bit, reminding kids that they can refer back to the Bible if needed. After time for discussion, ask a few willing kids to share their answers. Say: I like your answers! I mess up quite often, doing wrong things and getting mad and upset. That s why I m so thankful that God is forgiving and loving. And I m very glad that God is slow to get angry! I want us to remember this verse long after VBS ends, and Pike can help with that. Hold up a Pike Buddy again. Today s Buddy has part of the verse printed on him, but you can read the whole verse in the Bible whenever you want! Distribute Bible Memory Buddies Say: One of the cool things about Pike and other markhors is that they can jump long distances, from cliff to cliff. That reminds me of how Jesus closed the distance between us and God. Because Jesus took the punishment for our sins, we can be forgiven and close to God. Jesus covered that distance for us!

Say: Crew Leaders, here s how we ll give out our Pike Buddies. We ll cover a distance, too. Explain that Crew members will stand about 4 feet away from their Crew Leaders. Crew Leaders will call each child s name in turn and invite that child to come stand with them. When standing face-to-face, the Crew Leader will place a hand on the child s head and say, [Child s name], God s love for you will never fail while placing a Buddy in the child s hand. Demonstrate with a Crew Leader, if necessary. Then have Crew Leaders give each child a Buddy. When everyone has one, ask Crews to remain standing. Offer a Closing Prayer Say: Even though we might still have to deal with sharp words and other problems in our lives, we know that God is forgiving, loving, and slow to get angry. That s news we can celebrate! Remember our cheer from the other day? Lead kids in the cheer: 1, 2, 3, 4 God is for us; who needs more? Now let s add another part: 5, 6, 7, 8 God forgives us; he s so great! Lead kids in the new part of the cheer; then shout the entire cheer together. As kids wait for the Director s signal, they can put their Pike Buddies on the Everest Carabiners. As kids leave, give high fives and remind them of God's mighty power to forgive. [ART: KIDS CHEERING IN CREW]

Bible Story: Jesus promises us an eternal home. (John 14:1-3) Bible Point: Key Verse: God has the power to love us forever. Everyone who believes in him will have eternal life. (John 3:15) DAY 5 Did You Know? s Jesus described heaven as a house filled with many rooms, an expression meaning unlimited space. So we know heaven is really big big enough for everyone who believes in Jesus! s Jesus gave his disciples this message of comfort and the assurance of heaven to help prepare them for what was ahead. He knew the disciples would soon face many trials and persecutions, beginning with his own betrayal, trial, and crucifixion. s Jesus mentioned heaven many, many times in the Gospels. But he didn t give many details of what heaven is like. This is because Jesus was more concerned with making sure people knew how to spend eternity with him by believing in him! I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me (John 14:6). s Jesus used parables often during his ministry to explain truths to his followers. But during his last night with the disciples, described in John 13-17, Jesus spoke very plainly. This was Jesus last chance to make sure the disciples understood who he was, the work he had for them, that he would have a place waiting for them in heaven, and that he would one day return to earth! Why It Matters Sometimes the Bible can seem like a big history book filled with stories from a long, long time ago. But our God is not a character in a story from once upon a time. God always has been and always will be he is forever! Use today s lesson to help kids discover the hope they have in a heavenly future. Share the excitement Jesus followers have and the unimaginably wonderful forever home we have waiting for us in heaven. 27

Day 5 Get Ready s s s s s s Cue the KidVid Stories DVD to the Day 5 segment. Hang the Day 5 Bible Verse Poster and Bible Point Poster. Place a bookmark at John 3:15 in each Bible. Be sure to download the Bible Memory Buddies app and practice using it, if you didn t demonstrate it on Day 2. (See page 1 for instructions.) Wear your Watch For God Wristband. Play the Base Camp Sing & Play Music CD as Crews arrive. Day 5 Supplies s Yeddy Bible Memory Buddies* (1 per participant) * available from Group Publishing or your Group VBS supplier Introduce Yeddy Say: I can t believe it s our last day together at KidVid Cinema! I ve had so much fun with you! And we ve learned so much about God s mighty power! Hold up a Day 5 Yeddy Bible Memory Buddy. And I can t believe it s time to introduce our last Bible Memory Buddy! Please welcome Yeddy, a Himalayan brown bear! Since Yeddy is a bear and bears like to hibernate, Yeddy tends to sleep in the winter. Then he wakes up in the spring and comes out of his cave. The way Yeddy stays asleep for a long time and then wakes up kind of reminds me of God s power over death. Jesus died and was in a tomb, like a cave, for three days. Then with God s power, he came back to life and came out of the tomb! Our Bible Point today says God has the power to love us forever. (Hold on!) When we believe in Jesus, we can live with him forever in heaven. Let s meet two girls who knew how important that was in their family!

DAY 5 Watch the KidVid Stories DVD DVD Day 5 Turn off the lights, and play the Day 5 segment of the KidVid Stories DVD. When the segment ends, stop the DVD and turn on the lights. Say: I thought that was an amazing story! But I want to hear your thoughts. Ask: Why do you think Olivia and Elyse were so concerned about their uncle? Have you ever been in a situation where you wanted to share your faith in Jesus? What did you do or not do? Give Crews plenty of time to talk. When conversations seem to be winding down, give a 30-second warning to wrap up conversations. Then ask for a few kids to share what they said. Say: Thanks for those conversations. Now I have another question. Ask: Why do you think some people don t believe in Jesus? Give Crews a little time to talk, and then ask for a few kids to share. Say: Not everyone believes in Jesus. But that shouldn t stop us from sharing our faith. In fact, that just makes it more important for us to tell others about Jesus! I ll show you why. Explore the Key Bible Verse Distribute two Bibles marked at John 3:15 to each Crew. Have the Guide in each Crew read the verse aloud while Crew members follow along. Say: In this verse, the Bible is talking about Jesus when it says Everyone who believes in him will have eternal life. Wow, that s a pretty bold statement! Ask: First, what does the word eternal mean to you? Let kids call out their answers.

Say: Right, eternal means never ending something that goes on and on forever. So this verse is saying that when we believe in Jesus, we ll live with him forever. No wonder Olivia and Elyse wanted their uncle to believe in Jesus. They wanted their family to be together forever! Ask: Is there anyone in your family or close to you who needs to believe in Jesus? Tell your Crew about that person. What do you think is the best way to help someone believe in Jesus? What should you do or say, or not do or say? Give kids time to talk in their Crews. Then call time and ask for a few reports. Say: Telling others about Jesus is an important job that all of us can do! You don t have to wait until you re grown up to share your faith. Just look at Olivia and Elyse! We can all talk about Jesus! And you know what? I think you can use Yeddy to help start those conversations about Jesus! But first, you have to get a Yeddy, right? Distribute Bible Memory Buddies Say: I love that this verse is printed right here on Yeddy s back where we can read it anytime! Listen to the verse again! Read the verse aloud from a Yeddy Buddy. Yeddy can be a constant reminder to help us share our faith in Jesus. Here s how we ll distribute the Buddies. As you know, Yeddy likes to sleep in the winter. So kids, lie down in your cave. Have kids curl up on the floor. Crew Leader, you ll awaken each Crew member with a gentle shoulder nudge. The child will sit up with a yawn and stretch. Then you ll say the child s name and drop a Yeddy Buddy into the child s hands as you say, You have an eternal home with God! Remind Crew Leaders to say each child s name as they distribute the Buddies.

Trail Tip Information about the Buddy app is sent home with kids in multiple resources during Everest VBS. Parents can also see how it works at vbsbuddies.com. See Yeddy in Action Say: Do you remember the special thing your Bible Memory Buddies can do? Let s watch Yeddy in action! Set the Yeddy Buddy on the floor, and sit with the kids, facing the Buddy so kids can look over your shoulder as you demonstrate the way Yeddy comes to life on the smartphone or tablet. Each one of your Bible Memory Buddies will have a special feature like this that your parents can decide to use. They can learn more about that with the information sent home with you. When everyone has a Buddy and has put it on their carabiners, invite everyone to stand. Offer a Closing Prayer Have Crews form one big circle, and join the circle yourself. Demonstrate how to rest your hands on the shoulders of the people standing next to you so you ll all be standing in a big group hug. Pray: Thank you, God, for your mighty power and love! Thank you for all the fun we ve had here at Everest VBS. Please bless each person as they go out into the world and tell others about you. In Jesus name, amen! Thank kids for coming to KidVid Cinema this week, and remind them that God loves them! When you hear your Director s signal, dismiss kids to their next destination.
