1 The Lord s Prayer Daily Bread Memory Verse of the Week: But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore, do not WORRY about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:33-34 Give us today our daily bread Exodus 16 God provides manna (daily bread) to the Israelites o Daily bread includes everything that has to do with the support and the needs of the BODY. Deuteronomy 8:1-4 - We are praying for TANGIBLE things to be provided Praying for daily bread also includes our ATTITUDE towards God We are called to have a THANKFUL attitude towards God o Psalm 100:4-5 Give thanks to Him and praise His Name! We are called to REMEMBER God for all the ways He has provided already o Deuteronomy 8:10-14 Praise the Lord---don t forget!! o Exodus 16:32 Saved a jar of manna in the ark of the covenant We are called to be DEPENDENT on God for everything Matthew 6:25-27 We are called to live with CONTENT hearts that fuel our perspectives o Philippians 4:10-13 Just as we need physical bread to support our bodies, we also need SPIRITUAL bread for our soul Deuteronomy 8:3/Matthew 4:4 Man does not live on bread alone but on every WORD that comes from the mouth of the Lord. John 6:35 - Jesus said, I am the bread of LIFE. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. Main Point: DAILY BREAD is asking, trusting, and depending on God for all our physical needs and living with an attitude of thanksgiving, dependence, and contentment.

2 Reflection Time Use this space to silently reflect on these questions: 1) Draw a picture of how you interpret, Give us this day, our daily bread. 2) Honestly, what do you worry about in life? Why do you worry? 3) Look at the 4 attitudes God wants us to adopt---thankful, remembering, dependent, and content--- which of is the hardest for you? How could you change that attitude? 4) In what ways has American culture affected you in a negative way? How can you combat this?

3 Group Breakout Get To Know Ya- Go around your group and finish this sentence: If I could have in life, then I would be happy! Experiential Activity As a group you are to come up with at least 3 things that God provides us for each letter of the alphabet. That means you will come up with 78 things (3 x 26 letters). These can be items you use every day, things you are thankful for, or things that God has created---they must all be relevant for your life! Write these on the piece of paper that is provided for your group. Application 1) What is the difference between wants and needs? 2) Pick 1 thing from each letter and discuss whether it s a want or need. 3) Give an example of something in your life that is truly a want that you have made a need. Do you struggle with mixing these up? 4) Do you feel like you have less than people around you? Why do we compare? 5) Read Philippians 4:10-13 and share how this applies to your life? What does it mean to be content and are you content? 6) Why do you think God provided manna for the Israelites, where they had to collect it daily? 7) Read Matthew 6: What are things you worry about? Why do you worry? 8) What can you do with your worry that s healthy and helpful? How can you trust God? 9) Pray for a content heart---pray that you can trust God to provide your daily bread---pray that you can live life like God is truly trustworthy!

5 Family Time Family Time is meant to be an opportunity to get the family talking about spiritual things. Multiple studies show that parents and grandparents are the #1 faith role models in a child s life. We know life is busy, but we want to give you opportunities to grow together. A great time to do this is in the car, while eating a meal, or simply anytime you can enjoy together. 1) Think back to your day yesterday and write down everything that you ate (the rest of the family can do this too but only the Confirmand needs to write theirs down): Breakfast: Lunch: Dinner: Snacks/Other: Memory Verse of the Week: But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6: ) Once your list is complete pick out which thing was your favorite food to eat and circle it. What does it take to produce this food? Trace back the preparing of the food all the way back to God s gifts of creation (basic plants and animals) You can either list the process here or draw a diagram of it: 3) How does the complex process of making food help you to understand the line from the Lord s Prayer of Give us today our daily bread? Do you take food/clothing/shelter for granted? 4) Look up and write down the definition of content

6 5) Have each person share how they struggle with contentment Mom/Dad Confirmand Sibling/Other 6) Brainstorm ways you could be more thankful---it could be doing certain things (e.g. praying) or not doing things (e.g. comparing to others) 7) Read together with your family Psalm 100. This was written as a song or poem of thanksgiving. Write down your favorite phrase from it and close in a prayer thanking God for providing daily bread. For Further Study (an optional section for families that want to go deeper) Read the 16 th chapter of Exodus. This story gives us insight into God s provisions for his children. God provided for the people only enough food for each day. No more, no less. Because God provided for their daily need, the Israelites were not allowed to store any food away for the next day. Such an idea was an insult to God because it meant the people did not trust him to provide for their daily needs. What do you think it would be to experience life like this each day? Read Hebrews 11: It tells us that our home is only temporary here on earth. Therefore, Jesus teaches us to say daily bread so that we do not get caught up in the things of this world and forget that we have a better life to come!
