1 ostsccript postscript ARZA World D e a r I s r a e l T r a v e l e r, We hope that you had the experience of your life while in Israel. Now that you have returned home perhaps you ve had time to put together an album (online or off) and share stories with your friends and family about the alleyways of Tsfat, the Port of Tel Aviv and the rugged beauty of the Golan. Most likely you have also spoken about the crazy drivers, big breakfast buffets and that sense of warmth and safety that you felt while traveling through the country. We also hope your return to your normal daily routine has been as painless as possible. We understand that when one returns from a journey there is a burning passion and sense of connectedness that is felt by those who have traveled and experienced all of the wonders and challenges of that place visited. We also know that with all of the best intentions, life has a way of getting in the way and very quickly one finds his or herself caught up in work, school, drop offs, pick ups and everything in between. ARZA World has been a pioneer and innovator within the educational travel world for the past 20 years. We are often approached by our trip participants who look for ways to continue and strengthen the connection, relationship and passion they felt while traveling through Israel and are interested in finding avenues through which to broaden their understanding and deepen their insight even after they return home. Attached, please find three such avenues that we have found provide good starting points for those interested.
2 Light Reading (well, not always) Clearly, not everything one reads about Israel is light ; on the other hand, as you have experienced for yourself, there is much more than geopolitics on our Israel bookshelf. Our Education Team at ARZA World has combined a list of books on history, daily life, economy, conflict, fiction and poetry in Israel, and a special starter book list for kids of all ages. We hope you enjoy, keep a book or two on your nightstand and don t forget to shut the light before you go to sleep. History of Israel and of Zionism > Avner, Yehuda. 4 Easy Listening (but be ready to rock if you are up for it) Israel is a salad bowl of multicultural innovation and creativity; influenced by immigration from countries near and far, from Iraq to Ireland (and beyond), culture at general and music in particular continue to offer a window into the soul and pulse of the nation. Whether from a Jewish or Arab background, traditional or secular influence, the Israeli music scene continues to innovate and push boundaries even while it rests comfortably on the foundation of the past (whether that past is Jewish Liturgy, Beatles or Beastie Boys). Our ARZA World Team has provided a list of artists and albums (attached) that are as diverse, insightful and inspiring as the country itself. Track down CD s from Israel for your mp3 Hip Hop groups Hadag Nachash (East-West hip-hop) Subliminal (Persian hip-hop) Male and female vocalists David Broza (contemporary rock, world music) Idan Raichel Project (Israeli, Arab and Ethiopian fusion) Shlomo Artzi (modern folk) Rami Kleinstein (modern folk) Noa Achinoam Nini (modern folk with east-west flavor) Keren Peles (young new female vocalist modern folk) Miri Masika (young new female vocalist modern folk) Ehud Banai (contemporary rock) Eyal Golan (young new contemporary rock) Ivri Lider (pop, young new contemporary rock) Aviv Gefen (pop, young new contemporary rock) Yermi Kaplan (pop, young new contemporary rock) Mush Ben Ari (pop, young new contemporary rock) Rock Bands Shotei Hanevuah (rock) Knessiat Hasechel The Mind Church (rock) Beit Habubot (rock) Teapacks (rock) 2007 entry in Eurovision contest Old Classics Naomi Shemer Asif old classics (double CD collection of her songs, with different artists performing) Arik Einstein Good Old Eretz Yisrael (3 cd s) Ehud Manor Old Days of Benyamina various artists sing 62 of this great song writers collection Four in the Afternoon - double cd set of songs from IDF Radio Shalom Chaver live concert following the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin
5 The Silver Screen (or dvd, blue ray, ipad and apple tv) Sundance, Cannes, Berlin or the Oscars- regardless of where one goes for the best movies around, the last several years have seen the Israel Movie Industry at the very top of the world stage. With candidates at all of the leading world wide film festivals, Israeli movies continue to represent the State of Israel with honor and prestige. It is perhaps the ability of this nation to look introspectively, ready to both challenge its shortcoming and applaud its achievements, that has allowed Jews and non-jews, Israelis and non-israelis, to view the country in ways they never thought possible. The Jewish age-old tradition of being able to spin a good yarn means that whether the tale be about the conflict, social unrest, comedy or drama, the stories told are great. Aside from actually visiting and traveling to Israel, there is no better way to know Israel, than through the movies it makes about itself. We recommend the following 20 movies (popcorn not included): Best Films of the Decade (updated list as of February 28, 2012) Waltz with Bashir 2008 The Band s Visit (2007) Turn Left at the End of the World (2004) Jellyfish (2007) Campfire (2004) The Syrian Bride (2004) Beaufort (2007) Lebanon (2009) Sweet Mud (2006) Yossi and Jagger (2002) Walls (2009) Ushpizin (2004) Nina s Tragedies (2003) James Journey to Jerusalem (2003) Ajami (2009) A Late Wedding (2001) Broken Wings (2002) Walk on Water (2004) Time of Favor (2001) Footnote (2011)
