1 I. INTRODUCTION A. Lots of people teaching about the End Times (Note: Even the Tabloids are trying to get into the act!) B. So much written & taught about the Future it can be confusing! II. The IMPORTANCE OF OUR STUDY A. The Bible contains % prophetic material. B. The Book of Revelation is the only APOCALYPTIC book in the. 1. Yet there are other apocalyptic books in the O.T. 2. PROBLEM: The O.T. s prophecies are not in CHRONOLOGICAL order! C. The Book of Revelation helps to solve that problem! D. The Prophetic Word is important in witnessing! Rev. 19:10 the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. E. The Daniel Connection 1. Daniel can be seen as the to Revelation! 2. Daniel is the BASIS for many of John s prophecies! 3. Daniel provides the general TIME-FRAME for Revelation! ref. 12:4 4. The CONNECTION of various prophecies: a. The Golden Statue ch. 2 1) Reveals the Times of the Gentiles 2) Leads us up to the Final Gentile Kingdom (the last week ) 3) Reveals how the Final Kingdom will be replaced! (The Stone, cut out with out (human) hands!) v.45 b. The 70 Weeks (of years). ch. 9: ) Reveals a period of 490 years 2) Establishes certain key events of the Final Week 5. The Chronological Prophecy of the 70 Weeks (of years) a. To Whom it relates to: 1) your Holy 2) your people! (the!) b. The Context of ch. 9 is of 70 YEARS (9:3) 1. The word translated week is really a heptad ( 7 ) (like the word dozen means 12 ) 2. So, 70 7 s of years (70 X 7 = 490 years) c. Starting point of the prophecy: rebuilding of Jerusalem 1) ref. Nehemiah 2:1-8 2) Converting 20th year, 1st of Nisan to modern time: March 5, 444 BC 3) From that starting point -until Messiah the Prince would be 490 yrs. X 360 biblical yr. = 173,880 days 4) From March 5, 444 B.C. moving 173,880 days gives us- March 30, A.D. 33 What happened on that day? see: Luke 19 5) Jesus words Lk. 19:42? ( this day?) 1

2 6) Messiah was cut off (Messiah will suffer a violent death) 7) The people of the Prince will destroy the city (?) (A.D. 70) 8) Who is the Prince who is to come? 9) What will he do? make a firm covenant with the many (who?) for one week = years! 10) What will he do in the MIDDLE of the week? 11) Phrase on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate ref. Mt. 24:15! 12) What about the GAP between the legs of iron and the fee of iron and clay? -Consider the Feasts of Israel -Consider the Words of Jesus (as He quotes from Isaiah 62:2 (doesn t finish the full verse!) III. Some IMPORTANT Clarifications A. The NAME of the Bible s Last Book!: 1. Revelation (Gr. apacalupsis ) = an unveiling, a revealing. 2. Note: the word is s (therefore no S at the ending!) 3. The case form: genitive can show possession ( of ) but here 4. the genitive form can mean FROM or (Both meanings are possible and both fit! -Dr. Daniel B. Wallace) IV. IMPORTANT INTERPRETATIONAL POINTS A. Theology Proper: God is A in human history. God is A about the Future! B. Understanding Revelation! 1. What will UNLOCK the Final Book s imagery? 2. Note: A GRAMMATICAL mistake? Rev. 1:4 from Him who is is improper Greek (an object must agree in Gender, Number, & Case) But it doesn t agree in case. (Schoolboy error!) 3. But the phrase is very familiar to the 1 century reader: Ex. 3:14 4. This MISTAKE actually points us back to the O.T. Scriptures! 2

3 5. WHY SYMBOLISM? a John is exiled to the Isle of Patmos by Domitian b. He is instructed to write! c. How will he get this important revelation out to others? d. Roman guards will INSPECT any writings he wishes to send e. So the Spirit inspired this book to contain SYMBOLISM! V. PURPOSES OF PROPHECY A. Life is hard who do you hang in there? (Hanging on the Balcony) (But God will get you home to heaven somehow video from Apollo 13) B. 2 Peter 3:11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people OUGHT YOU TO BE in holy conduct and godliness, C. SPECIFIC PURPOSES of Revelation 1. To reveal the Events of the End of the Age 2. To ENCOURAGE Christians to live for Christ! (Even in the harshest of times!) D. THEMES: 1. Man is thoroughly 2. Jesus Shall Reign (story: The Janitor) VI. Key to Numbers in Revelation A. The number 7 = perfection or B. The number 24 = The Church VII. THE GLORIFIED CHRIST Rev. 1 A. The phrase son of man v Ps. 8:4 refers to a regular man (note: Heb. parallelism) 2. Dan. 7:13 (designation CHANGES!) a. The son of man here is DEITY ( to be worshipped v. 14) b. The son of man is clothed w/ a Robe & a Golden Band (belt) This indicates his PRIESTLY office! B. The Stars, Sword & Sun v stars (will be interpreted later) 2. sharp two-edged sword Rev. 19:15 also see: Heb. 4:12 3. The sun: refers to Jesus as Sovereign Lord (ref. Mt. 17) C. John s Reaction to the Glorified Christ v Became as a man 2. Remember: John is referred to as the disciple whom Jesus loved D. Jesus Response to John v Raised him up - ( Do not be afraid ) 2. So, Hades is a temporary waiting place for the unrighteous dead now! A place of torment before being consigned to hell! The BIBLICAL CONCEPT OF DEATH! -Key idea: 10! 1. Physical Death separation of soul from body 2. Spiritual Death (separation from God) - from Fellowship (believer s sin- cured: 1 Jn. 1:9) - for all Eternity at the final Judgment - Rev. 20 e. He makes a Covenant with the many in Israel to start the 7 yrs. of Tribulation 4. He breaks the Covenant in the middle -and reveals his true intent: To Be Worshiped! Consider: the temptation of Christ Mt. 4: He follows the pattern of the true Christ by a counterfeit Death & Resurrection 6. He desecrates the Temple and the False Prophet sets up an Image of him. 7. He has great power from his father, Satan who has great wrath 8. He requires The Mark (666) which is? Not your bank account number / social security number. It is the NUMBER OF THE BEAST i.e. the number of a man v How is one to calculate the number to identify the Beast? Note: Hebrew numbers F. APPLICATIONS: 1. THE FINAL Gentile government (under the Beast) will be the most satanic & deceptive of any other! 2. Anyone who trades liberty for security, deserves neither liberty nor security. B. Franklin 3. 16 3. SUGGESTED APPLICATIONS: - God will not let evil reign. He is keeping the accounts! -God will fulfill His covenant to His people, Israel. (Even through great trials!) -Jesus Second Coming will be like His first, He will come in great power and glory! ref. Ps. 2:9 (v. 8? Missions verse?) 6. Stage #6 THE SECOND COMING of Christ a. The Abrahamic Covenant will be fulfilled - Curse-for-curse, in kind. 3. Jesus will ultimately Triumph! WHO S SIDE ARE YOU ON?

17 THE KINGDOM AND THE ETERNAL STATE Introduction: It is interesting that what the Bible says about the future, and what we THINK we know about the future, can be very different. But God has revealed only a glimpse of what is to come! I. The Millennial Kingdom Rev. 20:1-7 (Judgment of sheep & goats has taken place! Mt. 25:31-40) A. The Angel with the Chain 1. Satan is chained 2. Is imprisoned in the abyss for 1000 years! B. The Stages of the First Resurrection 1. Jesus ( firstfruits ) 2. Church 3. Tribulation Saints 4. O.T. Saints C.
