I. The Law of God Revealed a. God s agape love defined & characterized b. Show us the impossibility of keeping it & need for a savior. Takes 10 commandments and reveals what they really mean. This is done more fully in the Sermon on the Mt. Recall Jesus said there He came to fulfill the law and unless righteousness exceeded Pharisees then could not enter the kingdom of God. Huge!! He then goes on to show us what the standard is. Last week we saw the blessed and the woes. The point of the next section is take everyone to a state of woe is me when we look at God s love and perfect standard. It describes things completely unnatural to us like loving enemies and not being critical of others. c. Reveal the work of the Savior himself Love Your Enemies (Matthew 5:38-48) 27 "But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.29 To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either.30 Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back.31 And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise. 32 "But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back.35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil.36 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. a. God s agape love defined & characterized Look again at verses for all the actions verbs. See Love 1 st in v27 and then it is defined HIGHLIGHT OR UNDERLINE THESE VERBS IN YOUR BIBLES Love: do good (27,33, 35) bless (28) pray(28) offer (29) do not withhold(29) give(30) do not ask back(30) do to them (31) lend(35) hope for nothing back (35) be merciful (36) 1. Love is a verb not a noun or emotion. It results in action. 2. Love has no favorites or bias v36 God loves evil and unthankful 3. Unselfish there is no motive in blessing the evil and your enemies 4. Not Natural to Man in fallen state 5. Action not reaction Look v Others centered vs self centered 7. Spiritual not just letter: Mat 5 murder & adultery committed in the heart. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails. b. 2 nd : Show us the impossibility of keeping the Law & the need for a savior 1O Commandments were given by God in its easiest literal do Not list. 2

3 SLIDE Commandments say do not murder, commit adultery, steal, lie, or covet against your neighbor 6. 'You shall not murder. 7. 'You shall not commit adultery. 8. 'You shall not steal. 9. 'You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 10.'You shall not covet Now we know we can t even keep this part if we are honest. There are 2 other levels since we know that Love fulfills the law and agape love is a doing/giving love like we just saw. In the Sermon on Mt Jesus is showing people just how far short they fall by revealing the next 2 levels of the law because man can t even keep the regular 10 commandments. **LORD GAVE ME THIS STORY** SLIDE: Show & Discuss the Ladder of Love (3 CLICKS) 2. Negative fulfillment revealed by Jesus says not even in your heart 3. + fulfillment revealed here goes one step further and says love and do good even to your enemies!! NOTES: a. Man can t get to love neighbor without 1 st loving /climbing up love God. No wonder so many people in churches seem unloving because they have never even loved God (obedience) and developed their relationship with Him 1 st. b. Rungs of loving neighbor are supported by loving God **The commandments are not just a list of don ts!! They reveal the heart of a God of agape love. He gave man the very lowest of the 3 levels by telling them what not to do just in a literal sense. Agape love as we saw in the text is a verb. It s a doing love in unselfish giving. ** The Pharisees were convinced they kept the law. Jesus said that unless you exceed the Pharisees you cannot enter the kingdom of God. Here we see that God s love is impossible to match. Jesus is revealing the next 2 levels to show man how tall the ladder is and how he cant even reach the 1 st rung. Why? So you see the need for a savior, get saved, and enter the 1 st stage of the beatitudes. You stand at the base of the ladder and say woe is me! Those who were rich, confident, full, and convinced they were right with God should have become very concerned after listening to this. c. Reveal the work of the savior: loving your enemy Romans 5:8-10 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life SLIDE Look again in verses to the actions verbs of agape love: do good (27,33, 35) entire ministry pray (28) John 17 offer (29) offered up His life give (30)/ do not withhold (29) only begotten Son do not ask back (30) - Grace lend (35)/ hope for nothing back (35) free gift salvation be merciful (36) still sinners Christ died for ungodly **Jesus will do all that He is describing here** = fulfilling the law

OT Examples of Loving Your Enemy. 1. Moses prayed for those who were against him and tried to over throw Him so Lord would not destroy. Gave himself to them in service despite rebellion. 2. Boaz Jew who loved, redeemed, fed, seeked out, and died to self for Ruth (Moabite). Jews & Moabites were enemies. They hired Balaam to curse them, used their women to stumble them, & they were at war in time of Judges, their God Chemosh hated Yahweh and vice versa. 3. David spared Saul who was delivered into his hand. 1 Samuel 24. **All 3 Types of JC in line of JC** Now lets move on to the next section which deal with judging: Luke 6:37-42 "Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.38 Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you." 39 And He spoke a parable to them: "Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch?40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher.41 And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye?42 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the plank that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother's eye. **I want to spend a lot of time here for several reasons. Mainly this verse and judging are widely misunderstood and misquoted especially by Christians. I spent a huge amount of time here because I really didn t know anything either. ** I. Many use this verse to avoid accountability. They pluck this one verse out Do not judge of context to avoid and accountability on their part because they have something to hide. We will explore what Jesus is saying here and realize there are many times we are to judge. II. 1 st Start with a comparison to Matthew 7:1-5 (turn there in your Bibles) Luke 6:37-42 "Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Will they not both fall into the ditch?40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher. 41 And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye?42 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the plank that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother's eye. 4 READ: Matthew 7:1-5 "Judge not, that you be not judged.2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.3 And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?4 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me remove the speck from your eye'; and look, a plank is in your own eye?5 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

5 COMPARISON SLIDE TO MATTHEW: Matthew 7:1-5: Luke 6:37-42: Do not judge Same measure back to you Speck/plank Hypocrite Do not judge Same measure back to you Blind Speck/plank Hypocrite See a pattern where wrong Judgment, Blindness, & Hypocrisy, go together: We will look at each one in order & then put it all together: 1 st Define Biblical definition of Judge 2 nd Define Blindness 3 rd Define Hypocrisy III. Definition of Biblical Judgment: NT #2919 Krino 1. Used 113 in NT: Many different uses & contexts 2. I looked at all of them and broke it down into 2 categories (SLIDE): I. God s Judgments: II. Man s Judgments: A. Allowed B. Not Allowed 3. Man does have authority to judge in scripture!! We need to find out what Jesus is saying not to do here in context. 4. SLIDE: Compare Gods Judgments in Agape Love to Mans in Flesh ( 6 CLICKs to show Mans) Lets now 1 st look at Gods judgments so we can see what His realm is. This will also reveal areas man should not judge and help us understand why and how man judges wrongly. Remember from the garden there is an innate temptation in our heart to want to be like God. Sometimes this is good but others its bad. 5. SLIDE: God s judgments: only God can know these things. We will see man wants to also and this will result in wrong judgments by man. 6. Now lets look at man judging rightly. These are judgments given to man and authorized by God in the word. Man is judging like God here in agape love (unselfish, unbiased, others best interest, restoration) Slide: Man Judging Rightly 6 CLICKS/EXPLAIN EACH 7. Now lets look at man judging wrongly: The common thread here is always trying to be like God when he can t or should not or a judgment not done in love. Slide: Man Judging Rightly 5 CLICKS/EXPLAIN EACH 8. SLIDE: Summary of Biblical Judgments SKIP: Do Not Judge (Matthew 7:1-5) "Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.38 Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you." Galatians 6:7-8 7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.nkjv Judges 1:7 7 And Adoni-Bezek said, "seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to gather scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has repaid me." Then they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

6 Now that we have defined Biblical Judgments both allowed and disallowed lets go on and define the blind 1 st and then hypocrites. Look at verse 39: The Blind 39 And He spoke a parable to them: "Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch?40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher. PASS OUT BLINDERS 1. Someone who cannot see. The light hits their eyes but it doesn t do anything. The light is not effective and no images are formed. They cannot see the word of God visual or reading. Live in darkness. Walk in darkness, cant see where they are going, rely on feeling a lot, easy to be led astray, prone to stumble/fall. 2. Word Study: Blind Summary: 1. Unsaved. The blind are healed by coming to Jesus. Many verses here. 2. The Religious: a. Religious unsaved hypocrites. b. Religious hypocrites who accuse others and do the same things, put burdens on others and don t do the same things themselves. c. Religious who think they have it right and can see but are blind. e. Unsaved religious church people who are deceived. Now let s look at the Hypocrite. Look in verse 41. The Blind Hypocrite 41 And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye?42 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the plank that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother's eye. 1. Hypocrite means actor/one who wears a mask. Trying to be someone they are not. A mask blocks your vision of them and your own vision (show and pass out mask). 2. Speck and plank both made of wood (same material) 3. Accusing others of same sin/idol that s in your eye. Your biggest sin/idol will be what you accuse others of. Easy to spot because used to seeing it! My son & his faults. 4. Plank in eye = blindness 5. Accusing condemning hypocrite is blind to their own sin/idols and actually accuses themselves. 2 Samuel Hypocrite word study: a. Religious people doing things to be seen by men and not for love for God (giving, prayer, fasting) b. Blind, unsaved, religious people with no heart for God that do the very things they condemn. Lip service but no heart. Follow commandments of men vs word of God. c. Religious people who cannot see the truth of Jesus or signs of the times. d. Religious who try and entrap others e. The Unsaved f. Religious who do the things they condemn & meet letter of law and their own traditions but miss heart of the law: love & mercy. Hosea 6:6 For I desire mercy and not sacrifice, And the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. Micah 6:8 He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God? The religious Pharisees had made up their own rules and interpretations of scripture. Salvation was based upon following their system of rules & regulations. They condemned those who did not follow their man made traditions. The Pharisees were always named by Jesus as being both blind & hypocrites. He used the same verse about leading people into a ditch directly against them.

7 Matthew 15:12-14 Then His disciples came and said to Him, "Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?" But He answered and said, "Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.14 Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch." Now we can see the context here is Jesus talking to religious people who judge and condemn others based on their own standards, traditions and rules. They are blind to their own sin and depravity. They accuse others of the very things that they do or do not do themselves which is hypocrisy. All 4 features run together in scripture: 1. Judging/Condemnation by man by own standards 2. Blindness (plank in eye) 3. Hypocrisy (plank in eye & condemning speck) 4. Religious (blind hypocrites) Summary Definition: deceived/unsaved (blind) in outward imitation relationship (religion) that wear a mask of righteousness but do the very things they condemn (hypocrite) by following traditions of men which causes them to miss the heart of the law (love). LOOK AT SLIDE: It cant be the approved ones. Now it should be clear when Jesus says Do not judge he is talking about judging people to condemnation and not in love. Furthermore He is saying that those who do this also do the very same things (hypocrites) and are blind to it. They are pointing out in others what their own biggest sin/idols are. They are also likely to be religious wearing a mask to be and appear like someone they are not. Again idolatry, religion, blindness, hypocrisy, desire to be like God, and unloving judgment run together. If time turn to Genesis Ch 3. Go thorough verses. SLIDE as Review: 8 Steps to Unloving Judgment Genesis 3 1. Legalism (adding to the word of God) added to God s word The start of deception nor shall you touch it v3 2. Desire to be like God you will be like God v5 3. Deception/Blindness/Death Failure to see own sin she saw in the flesh that it was good to eat. she ate v6 4. Blind lead the blind into ditch of She led the home and he ate v6 sin & death 5. Religion (false covering) sewed fig leaves v7 6. Hiding in God s House hid themselves in garden v 8 7. Unloving Judgment: the woman who You gave me v12 Blaming/Condemnation 8. Hypocrisy: you..have eaten from the tree v17 Condemn self/do the same things Now when you find yourself putting someone down, criticizing, or condemning their behavior let this verse slap you in the face and stop. Think hard: Do I do these same things? Why am I doing this? Do I see myself in them and feel angry? What am I trying to accomplish or hide? How am I trying to be like God?

8 Now back to our text. Jesus has 1. Defined & revealed God s agape love: action verb of unselfish giving even to enemies 2. Warns about blind religious hypocrites that condemn others but do the same things. They will lead you into a ditch. They don t judge in love but have their own motives. They wear a mask and can t see. 3. Now he goes on to how to identify people. Recall this is a judgment man is allowed to make in love. Fruit/Inspection: Identification. **1 st How to Love, How not to judge, How to judge** A Tree Is Known by Its Fruit (Matthew 7:15-20): Inspection/Identification (How to Judge) 43 "For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.44 For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush.45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. NKJV The fruit is agape love (unselfish giving) that comes from God. Jesus makes a contrast between good and bad fruit. You can identify the true believer by inspecting their fruit. The characteristics in Galatians and 1 Cor 13 help us know what to look for in people. These are characteristics not normally found in society. You can have them without Holy Spirit working in you since agape love comes from God. Fruit From God Eternal/Heaven focused LOVE: (unselfish giving) Dying to save Plastic Fruit (outward good inward wrong heart) Legalism: Imitation/Affectation Temporal/Worldly focused PROSTITUTION: (selfish giving) ADULTERY, RELIGION, BRIBERY, FLATTERY, MANIPULATIVE, MARKETING Anti-Fruit (Rotten/Poisonous) Lawlessness Temporal/Worldly focused MURDER: (selfish taking) Dying to kill RAPE, HATRED Want to know someone s heart? Listen to them talk!! What do hear? Bitterness, wrath, jealousy, discontent, anger, frustration, misery, pain, etc. The words describe the heart. Build on the Rock (Matthew 7:21-27) 46 "But why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do the things which I say? Be a doer of the word. Jesus defines loving Him as obedience by keeping/doing His commandments in Jn Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like:48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.49 But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great."

9 Built on Rock Foundation Built on Earth/World (No Foundation) Built/Live Around Jesus Christ World Depth/Digging Deep in heart Superficial/none Effort Work / Hard None/Easy/Lazy Trust in Jesus Christ Others/self Perspective Heaven/Eternal Earth/Temporal Hope Living Hope in Christ No Hope/False expectation Trials For my Good!
