CHILDREN S RESOURCE
AGES 5-7
Thank you for running this session with your children s group. We hope children will be inspired as they learn how Birungi, through the help of a Tearfund partner, was restored to and discovered her full potential. You know your group best: please use this resource flexibly to fit the time, facilities and dynamics of your group. Don t forget our print friendly PDFs available for download to use in your sessions. YOU WILL NEED (BEFORE THE SESSION): To print off and cut up the picture of Birungi, following the dotted lines on the back Scissors to cut up the picture Before the children arrive, cut up and hide the 16 pieces of Birungi s picture around the room. Don t hide the pieces too well as they all have to be found later! Try to remember where the pieces are hidden. It might be helpful to print out and cut up a second picture of Birungi in case some pieces go missing or get damaged It may not be possible for all the children to find one piece of the picture, so make sure no one gets upset or feels left out. You could offer everyone a reward whether they find a piece or not.
INTRODUCTORY TALK The Bible tells the story of a young boy called David, the son of a man called Jesse. He lived in a land known as Israel. At that time there was a king called Saul who did not obey God, so God rejected him and decided he should no longer be king. God called on his prophet Samuel to find another person, someone that God had chosen to be the new king. God sent the prophet Samuel to Jesse s house. Jesse had eight sons, and God told Samuel that the new king he d chosen was one of his sons. When Samuel came to Jesse s house, Jesse brought seven of his sons to meet him. Samuel looked at the fine, tall and smartlooking boys and decided that the new king must be one of them. But God said to Samuel that he should not look at their appearance. The Lord does not look at the things people look at, said God. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. One-by-one the seven sons passed by Samuel and God rejected all of them. He still hadn t found the future king. So Samuel asked Jesse if he had any other children. Jesse replied that there was another son the youngest, a shepherd out looking after the sheep. This was David. So Samuel asked Jesse to fetch David from the fields so that he could meet him. When David arrived, God said to Samuel that he was the one. So Samuel declared him as king. From that day forward, God s Spirit came powerfully on David.
ACTIVITY: THE LOST GIRL Now, I ve been very silly today. I wanted to show you a picture of a very special girl called Birungi. The picture was cut into squares and I ve lost all the pieces. Will you help me? When I say go (not yet...) when I say it, I want you to look all around the room until you find all 16 pieces. We re all doing this as a team. So I want you to work together and, when we find all the pieces, we can all have a celebration. GO! Children search for the pieces and when they are all back (and you ve given them a treat) ask the children to sit in a circle and scatter the pieces randomly on the floor in front of them. Ask the children what they can see. Some may say, lots of pieces or bits of a girl s face etc. It is a girl. But we can t really see her properly, can we? We have to put all the pieces back together Turn the pieces over to reveal the numbers on the back from one to 16. There are four rows of four and if you lay out the pieces like this (see right), you can then turn each piece over in numerical order and reveal Birungi s picture. So, now we ve found all the pieces and put them together in the right place, we can see Birungi. But if I take one piece away, let s look again. Does it look right to you? (Group should answer no ) No, it doesn t, does it? That s because even when there s just one piece missing, the whole picture looks wrong.
BIRUNGI S STORY Birungi lives in a country called the Democratic Republic of Congo, or the DRC for short. It s a very poor country that s been at war for a long time. But most people in Birungi s country don t want to be fighting at all, they want to enjoy peaceful and happy lives just like we do. Life is very difficult in the DRC and lots of things that we think are normal like food every day, water from taps, flushing toilets, going to school or having a job are much more difficult where Birungi lives. For Birungi, living in the DRC meant that she didn t go to school. That s because mums and dads have to pay for school in her country and it s very expensive for a poor family. So, parents often have to make a choice who to send to school. Often, they decide to send boys, rather than girls. When she grew up, because Birungi did not learn at school, she couldn t read, write or add up. She felt like she wasn t clever enough, or able to do anything interesting or useful with her life. But a church near Birungi had set up a special place for people who had never been to school. They taught Birungi how to sew and mend clothes. They also showed her how much Jesus loves her and how special she is to God. Now Birungi has her own shop where she makes clothes: beautiful dresses and smart shirts. She has learnt so much, and is very good at sewing, mending and running a business. But the most important lesson she learnt is that Jesus loves her and makes her strong and able to do amazing things. Remember the story of David? That story teaches us that what God looks for is people s hearts what they care about. Not what they look like, or how much other people value them. David was the youngest of his brothers. He was a shepherd spending his days looking after sheep. He would wear dirty clothes and may have smelt of animals. When Jesse heard that Samuel was coming, he didn t even bother to bring David in from the fields. When Samuel looked at David s seven brothers, he thought because they were older and smarter looking that the king must be one of them. But God could see David s heart and knew that although he was younger and dressed in the clothes of someone who spends his days looking after sheep he was the right person to be king. Birungi was overlooked in a similar way to David. Her brothers went to school and she didn t. But God could see her heart and knew she had skills and abilities that he had given her. And that s what God wants for us to bring out all the amazing things that he has put inside us. He doesn t want us to be overlooked, he wants us to be everything he has created us to be. Like the with photo we put back together God wants us to see the complete picture. He knows our hearts and wants to us to be fully who we are with not a single bit missing. Add the missing piece to Birungi s picture. DISCUSS: What would you like to be when you grow up? How would you feel if all your friends went to school and you were left to work at home? How do you feel when you get left out?
You can download a simple word search with keywords from today s session hidden within the grid at: THE RULES Tell the children they are all superheroes but that like Superman, Wonder Woman and Spider-Man they have a secret identity. Ask all the children to choose and put on a cape. Then ask them to walk around the room slowly like a normal person. But when they hear the music they should leap into action: hold out their capes and zoom around the room like superheroes. When the music stops they have to freeze. The person who freezes the last is out and then the music starts again and there s another round until there is only one child left the winner. Alternatively, you can play a non-competitive version where the aim is for them to just leap about and be superheroes. LESSON Like superheroes, on the outside we may look ordinary, but inside our hearts where God looks, we are super! If we looked at Clark Kent, Diana Prince and Peter Parker we d think they were just ordinary people. We wouldn t know they were Superman, Wonder Woman and Spider-Man. God sees our true selves and wants us to be who we really are amazing people created by him. The story of David being chosen by God is told in a song called Stinky shepherd boy by Quiz Worx. 8 PRAYER There are lots of children in the DRC and across the world whose lives have been broken up like Birungi s. And Jesus wants to make them all whole again. Let s pray Thank you Jesus, that you love us all equally and want the best for all of us. We pray for girls like Birungi who are not at school, help them to find people to teach them so they don t miss out. We pray for all children who are hungry. Please bless them, and help people in poor countries to work together to make life better. Amen.

We have to put all the pieces back together Ask the children to piece the picture together in the usual way you would with a jigsaw (although these are squares not pieces that slot together). We ve put a border around the edge, so you could start with the edges to make it easier. You could also turn the pieces over and use the numbers on the back from one to 16. There are four rows of four and if you lay out the pieces like this (see right), you can then turn each piece over in numerical order and reveal Birungi s picture. Halfway through (before you reveal her mouth) you could ask the children if they think she will be happy or sad. When you reveal her smiling, you can ask the children again. So, now we ve found all the pieces and put them together in the right place, we can see Birungi. Can I have a volunteer? Choose volunteer Can you [volunteer] take one piece, any piece away. Volunteer removes a piece Now, let s look again. Does it look right to you? Group should answer no No, it doesn t, does it? That s because even when there s just one piece missing the whole picture looks wrong. Keep the missing piece to one side for now.
BIRUNGI S STORY You heard about Birungi earlier [If you did the talk and the children were present]. She s a woman who lives in a country called the Democratic Republic of Congo, or the DRC for short. The the DRC is a very poor country that s been at war for a long time. But most people who live there don t want to be fighting at all, they want to enjoy peaceful and happy lives just like we do. But they are stuck in a place where there is a war. So life is very difficult and lots of things that we think are normal like food every day, water from taps, flushing toilets, going to school or having a job are much more difficult in Birungi s country. Like everywhere in the world, the changing climate means that countries are facing more drought, earthquakes and floods which hit poor communities hardest because they don t have the resources to change their circumstances. For Birungi, living in the DRC meant that she didn t go to school. We know that God loves and cares about us all equally, boys and girls the same. But where Birungi lives, many people think that girls don t matter as much. Which is very sad because that s not what God thinks, and it means boys are chosen to go to school instead of girls. That s because mums and dads have to pay for school in the DRC and it s very expensive for a poor family. Parents often have to make a choice about who to send to school, and sadly they often choose boys over girls. So Birungi had to stay at home when her brothers went to school. And when she grew up, because Birungi did not learn at school, she didn t have any skills to get a job. She couldn t read, write or add up. She felt like she wasn t clever enough, or able to do anything interesting or useful with her life. The Bible tells us that Jesus wants us to have a full and happy life. Jesus wants all parts of our lives: our families, the places where we live, what we do and who we are to be good, as we follow Jesus teaching. Jesus wants to be in the centre of all of those things. Birungi didn t know she was brilliant at making clothes because she d never learnt. But a church near Birungi had set up a special place for people who had never been to school. They taught Birungi how to sew and mend clothes. They also showed her how much Jesus loves her and how special she is to God. But the most important lesson she has learnt is that Jesus loves her, and makes her strong and able to do amazing things. Jesus wants Birungi to be whole: not lost like the pieces of the picture were at first. Not scattered in the wrong order like they were before we put them together. And he wants us to be whole too: without a single piece missing. Add the missing piece to Birungi s picture.
CONTINUED... Do you remember the story of David we heard at the start? From that story we learn that what God looks for is people s heart what they care about.
