Preparation: Please pray that God will use your talk to bless both the people who hear you and children who are at risk of being trafficked. Pray that Jesus will inspire and challenge those who hear you to commit to give regularly and generously to the poor through Tearfund. The children s resources in the church pack are a brilliant starting point for creating an all-age, child-friendly talk. Below are some examples of how you can use and adapt those resources to help you deliver a brilliant talk. Use them as a pick n mix to suit your needs. For ease these have been written following an Attention, Empathy, Insight, Options, YOU (AEIOU) structure. Follow this structure to gain greatest impact for your message. You are welcome to adapt all of the below to suit your own style Please ask the church leader to introduce you and endorse the work of Tearfund during the service and before you speak. Delivering the talk: Please make sure all the congregation is given sign-up forms and pens as they come into church. Attention: This is your opportunity to engage the congregation s attention with something compelling in a way they are not expecting. Option 1 Stand at the front of the congregation with some very realistic rubber eggs in an egg box. (You can buy them online really easily or in large pet shops/especially if they have a poultry section) Today I am going to talk to you about eggs. Ask the congregation to put up their hands up or shout out the answer to this question: What can you get from eggs? (eg omelette, cake, pancakes, chicks ) You can always make some suggestions if the answers are not forthcoming. When you hear an answer you like, give them a bit of a warning catch and gently throw the egg to them. Up until this point they will think that you are holding real eggs. To emphasise the point more you could always have one real egg in your pack and crack it into a cup/bowl at the very beginning as you ask the question. Eggs are great aren t they? And for a boy called Nazeeb and his family they are so much more than...use some of the answers given by the congregation.and today we are going to find out how God uses tiny chicks to help protect people like Nazeeb and his family in poverty. Ask for 2-4 volunteers (This is appropriate for children and adults), you could prep a few 1
people before and devise an egg and spoon race around the church.(you could use the rubber eggs or hard boiled eggs.) Have a small bag of *sweets to give to the winner. Option 3 On the completion of the race explain that today you are going to talk about how God can use the humble egg and the smallest of chicks to help protect people in poverty. Print out photos of chicks, hide them around the church and invite the children to come and find them. As they bring them to the front (give them a small bag of *sweets perhaps) explain that today you are going to talk about how God can use the humble egg and the smallest of chicks to help protect people in poverty. *Be aware of possible allergies Empathy: This is your opportunity to draw out the huge issue and injustice that is human trafficking. You can do this by telling one of the stories below that you feel is most relevant to you. Option 1 Option 3 (or used with any option above) Use the PowerPoint from speaker s corner. Show the different photos and explain where they are set and what is in the photos. If you do not have access to a projector, have a couple of atlases and ask a few families to find India in the book. See if they can find Bihar and ask them to show it to the people around them. You could have printed off some of the photos and could put them up around the church at this point. You could ask the children to help do this. Have a photo of Nazeeb on the projector and read out Nazeeb s story. I was 14 when I had to finish school. My mum didn t have enough money to get enough food to feed us, so I needed to find work so we would have enough money to eat. Someone told me they could get me a job. I wanted to stay in school but I knew I had to help my family. I went to work where the man told me. But it turned out to be a terrible trap. I had to work for 21 hours each day. Can you imagine? It was so tiring and it was so hard. The worst bit was: though the man had promised me money, he didn t even give me one penny, so I couldn t help my family after all. I was far away from home. Then I felt ill and I needed to go to hospital, but the factory owner wouldn t let me. Eventually he let me go. I borrowed some money so that I could get the train home. It took me three days to get back. I was so pleased to be back with my family. But I knew the same problem still existed. We didn t have enough food. 2
But then things changed because of some Christians in our area. They helped me to set up a chicken farm. They taught me how to look after the cute fluffy chicks and raise them to be strong hens so I could take them to market. This is a much better way to get money to feed us rather than being in a factory. So now I can help get us enough food and I can stay with my family. Now I can have a much better life. To link with both Option 1 and 2 With reference to the Key Facts booklet share some facts eg Slavery still exists today. In fact, somewhere in the world, a child is trafficked every 30 seconds. Over a year that s 1.2 million about the same as the population of Birmingham. In Bihar, where Nazeeb is from, 4,000 children are trafficked every month. Trafficking is the fastestgrowing crime in the world. Explain that Bihar is much bigger than use an example of a local town/city/county and explain that in Bihar lots of people are hungry. Nazeeb s family was just like many others in Bihar and lived in poverty. This meant they did not have enough food to eat; they lived in very basic homes and had very little money to buy things or go to school. Nazeeb s mum tried hard to make sure her five children had enough food to eat, even if it meant sometimes she didn t eat anything. But even with this, she only managed to get just enough for two meals each day. Insight: This is your opportunity to compare and contrast from Exodus with the story you have told highlighting what God says on this issue and leading people to consider what Jesus asks of us. Option 1 Read or get someone else to read Exodus 2: 1-9 (the story of Moses birth) Draw comparisons between Moses and Nazeeb. Both from very poor families, both had mothers who wanted what was best for them, even if that meant giving them away. Then read or get someone else to read Exodus 3: 1-14 (The burning bush) God does not want people to live in slavery, he has heard their cry. That is no different today than in Egypt with Moses. Here is another story, this one a little bit longer ago about a boy called Moses. (You could always ask the adults to read Exodus 2-3 while you read this out). In a faraway land, many, many years ago, a boy called Moses was saved by his clever little sister and his loving mum. In the land of Ancient Egypt, the ruling king whose name 3
was Pharaoh, was jealous of the Hebrew people. Many Hebrews were being born and were very healthy. The king felt threatened by their power. He wanted all the power! So he ordered the killing of all Hebrew boys so that they wouldn t grow up into successful men and become important in the land. He wasn t bothered about the little girls because he didn t think that girls had much power. How wrong he was! One woman had a clever idea that would save her son, Moses. When he was born, she hid him. She made a basket and painted tar on it to make it waterproof. She put Moses inside the basket and put the basket inside the river. And that river was the big River Nile that runs through the whole of Egypt. Moses mum wasn t sure what would happen, but she trusted God. She sent her daughter, Miriam, to walk along the riverbank so she could see what became of Moses and the basket. Do you know where that basket ended up? It ended up floating right by the princess. The king s daughter was having a bath in the river when she saw the basket and she asked her servants to bring it to her. She thought Moses was so cute and she wanted to take him in as her own son. She worked out that it must have been a Hebrew baby that was sent to escape so he wouldn t be killed. Miriam was watching from the riverbank and she had a great idea. She was brave and spoke up in front of the princess. I know, she said I know what you need. I know a woman who will be able to help you look after him. How brilliant! the princess said. And she asked Miriam to go and fetch this lady. This lady was, of course, Moses' own mum, who was reunited with her son. So Moses grew up in the palace, but he was looked after by his very own mum, who told him all about who he really was, and the great God that they worshipped, who had saved him and brought him to Pharaoh s house. As Moses grew up, he trusted in God too. But it was hard for the Hebrews, in Pharaoh s country. And Pharaoh made them into slaves. That meant they had to work without choice and they weren t paid at all. Pharaoh even asked them to make bricks with straw. Now, that s not fair! One day, while the Hebrews were working, the Egyptians boss killed one them of them. Moses was so sad and angry when he saw this that he killed the Egyptian in return. He thought no one had seen him, but later he realised his secret was out. Pharaoh, the ruler, wanted to kill Moses so he ran away from Egypt. 4
Moses thought his life was over. He ran away into the desert and many years passed. Moses got married and started a family. He started a brand new life. But while Moses was alone in the desert, he saw a bush. The bush looked like it was on fire, but when he looked closer, he saw that the leaves weren t burning; they were still fresh and healthy inside the flames. How strange! Then, a voice came out from the bush. It was God, speaking through the bush. God was telling Moses that he wanted him to go back to Egypt and set his people free. What did God mean by that? He didn t want his people, the Hebrews, to be slaves in Egypt. He wanted them to be free to live his way and to worship him. Moses was scared because he didn t want to go and speak to Pharaoh but God showed him that he would be there with him. Moses was nervous about public speaking so God said he could be a team with his brother and his brother could do the talking. Moses was brave and he went to Pharaoh. Moses asked Pharaoh to let the Israelites go, but Pharaoh did not like Moses' request. They Hebrews were a source of free labour for him. Who would build all his city and his pyramids if the Hebrews had gone? Pharaoh did not want to have to pay Egyptians to do his building work: so he said no. But God surprised Pharaoh. God really wanted his people to be released, so he did something big that would catch Pharaohs attention. He said he would turn the water of the River Nile, the big river that ran through the WHOLE of Egypt, into blood if Pharaoh did not let the Hebrews go. And Moses had to go and tell Pharaoh this. Moses was brave and went with his brother to tell Pharaoh. Pharaoh did not take God seriously. He decided he would still keep the Hebrews as slave. He still said no. God was true to his word and he turned the water in the River Nile into blood. But still Pharaoh would not let them go. Over lots of days and weeks, they kept going on this same route. (You can read all about how this happened in the Bible.) Eventually, Pharaoh was so upset about these things that happened that he finally realised God wanted his people released and so Pharaoh said they could go. By sending challenges to Pharaoh and the land, God showed how much he cared about freeing the Hebrews. You can find all of those things in your Bibles. It had been a long wait and a lot of pain but, finally, the Hebrews were free. They left Egypt, taking as many things as they could carry. Who was it that God used to do this? The little boy put in a basket to keep him safe. Pharaoh changed his mind and came after them a few days later, but God kept them 5
safe. He did this in amazing ways, but those are stories for another day. To use with option 1 or 2 if wanted: International Children s Bible Exodus 3:7-8a, The Lord said, I have seen the troubles my people have suffered in Egypt. And I have heard their cries when the Egyptian slave masters hurt them. I am concerned about their pain. I have come down to save them from the Egyptians. I will bring them out of that land. The Message Exodus 3: 7-8 GOD said, I ve taken a good, long look at the affliction of my people in Egypt. I ve heard their cries for deliverance from their slave masters; I know all about their pain. And now I have come down to help them, pry them loose from the grip of Egypt, get them out of that country and bring them to a good land with wide-open spaces, a land lush with milk and honey, the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite. Options: This is your opportunity to help your listeners to connect directly with what God is saying to them through this passage and show them what options they can take in response. Option 1 In both the story of Moses and Nazeeb we see how God uses people just like you and me to help those in need. God used Moses to release people from slavery; God is using Christians and even little chicks to do the same thing today. In Psalm 82:3-4 God says Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the the cause of the poor and the oppressed. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. And what is really exciting is that we can do just that today. We can defend the weak, we can uphold the poor we can protect them before they even get into the hands of the wicked. We know that God loves everyone and not matter where they are in the world he loves them. We know from the story of Moses that God hears the cry of those in slavery and he knows of their pain and that he gave Moses the tools to release them from slavery. YoU: In Psalm 82:3-4 God says Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the poor and the oppressed. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. Because of Christians working with Tearfund and little chicks we can do something to help that today. This is where you call individuals in the congregation to take action on what you have spoken about by praying and giving regularly. Option 1 Just as God used Moses years ago and Christians in Bihar with tiny chicks today, he can use you. We believe in God s incredible power because we have heard today about God doing amazing things though people just like us. Sometimes it can be as simple as an egg (hold the rubber egg from the beginning): a 6
small thing, with great potential. For Nazeeb the answer was an egg. For other people, it might be something else. Small vegetable farms, milk cooperatives, small business; these are all helping people who need it most. For families like Nazeeb s an egg has meant they can build a secure income, they no longer need to look elsewhere for work, they are no longer hungry. The great thing is that whatever we have to bring, God will use us; he will even use a tiny egg. On your seats you will find/when you came in your where given/ some volunteers are now going to give out/ receive a paper egg. As individuals, or as a family, think about what you have been given and how you could use it today. Perhaps write it on the egg. As above but leading to prayer activity. On your seats you will find a paper cut-out of an egg (depending on arrangements with church these could also be given to each person as they come in or given out by volunteers at this point). Use this egg to write your prayer. Thank God for Tiny Chicks, Pray for Families like Nazeeb s etc. Option 3 (can be used with all of the above) Invite the congregation to bring the prayers to the front and put them in a basket. Some of you today may want to know what else you can do. Tearfund has a dream to see more children protected, to resource more families and for the price a dozen eggs a week ( 3-4 a week) you could do just that. (Hold up the box of rubber eggs from the beginning.) For 12 a month four children, just like Nazeeb, this year can receive the training, life skills and tools needed to be protected and kept safe. If that is something you want to do please fill in the form in your pew (put No Child Taken response forms out in advance) and come and speak to me after the service. Pray Father, we thank you for the work of Tearfund and its partners and Christians across the world doing what they can to protect children from traffickers. Thank you for the way you are restoring and strengthening Nazeeb s family, giving them the means to break free from poverty. We pray that through this they may come to know you as their Lord and Saviour. We pray for the church in India, a minority, who are serving you in practical ways. We lift up to you Dennyson and all the staff at EHA and others who are working in difficult places across the world. Please give them the energy, passion and resources they need. May they know and show your comfort as they walk in the darkest places. 7
We pray for vulnerable children across the world, at risk not just from trafficking but from disease and disasters. Please be close to them; please give them a hope and a future. Open our eyes to see you at work around the world. We thank you for inviting us to be part of your plan to restore creation. We praise you, the giver of life, the redeemer and restorer. Help us to be patient and persistent in prayer in all the places we have not yet seen restoration, including the plight of vulnerable children. Help us to see your light and your plan to save. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen. 8
