February 09, 2013 Judgments Mishpatim The משפטים Exodus 21:1-24:18, 30: Kings 12:1-17 Mark 9 Pastors Mark Biltz & Art Palecek Exodus 21:1 Now these are the judgments (mishpatim) which thou shalt set before them. Genesis 18:19 For I have known him, to the end that he may command his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of Jehovah, to do righteousness (tzedek) and justice ( mishpat); to the end that Jehovah may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him. Exodus 21:2 If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing. Ephesians 6:5 Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; 6 Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; 7 With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: 8 Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. In the haftorah portion, there were men of the Children of Israel, during the siege of Jerusalem, violated God s covenant regarding servants going free. Jeremiah 34:2 Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Go and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah, and tell him, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire: 3 And thou shalt not escape out of his hand, Jeremiah 34:8 This is the word that came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, after that the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people which were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty unto them; 9 That every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant, being an Hebrew or an Hebrewess, go free; that none should serve himself of them, to wit, of a Jew his brother. 10 Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had entered into the covenant, heard that every one should let his manservant, and every one his maidservant, go free, that none should serve themselves of them any more, then they obeyed, and let them go. Jeremiah 34:11 But afterward they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids :12 Therefore the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,:13 Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondmen, saying, 2

Jeremiah 33:25 Thus saith the LORD; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth; 26 Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return (bwv shuv), and have mercy on them return: bwv shuv-to turn around David here is referred to as a servant (ebed) The same word used for a servant or slave in 21:2 Isaac is spelled differently in this verse : Yischak qxvy 3

And if a man smite the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free for his eye's sake. And if he smite out his manservant's tooth, or his maidservant's tooth; he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake. Exodus 23:1 Do not let a false statement go further; do not make an agreement with evil-doers to be a false witness. Exodus 23:2a You shall not follow a multitude to do evil. Exodus 23:2b Do not be moved to do wrong by the general opinion, or give the support of your words to a wrong decision: Exodus 23:4,5 If you meet your enemy's ox or his ass going astray, you shall surely bring it back to him again. If you see the ass of him that hates you lying under his burden, and would forbear to help him, you shall surely help with him. And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and made them go up with him into a high mountain by themselves: and he was changed in form before them: Mark 9:4,5 And there came before them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tents; one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. Mark 9:7 And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. Deuteronomy 18:15 The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; 8

At the close of the service please take your items, i.e. notes etc. to respect the cleanliness of the Sanctuary. Please dress modestly so as to not be a distraction to others, and dress your best to honor God, and in respect of the Sabbath. We believe God s Presence is with us. Please observe quietness in conversation in the Sanctuary especially during our Worship times in respect to others. ONEG (Potluck Lunch) It has been a long standing tradition at El Shaddai Ministries to fellowship together after the service and share a meal together. We hold ONEG every 2 nd and 4 th Saturday. People are blessed to be able to eat together and share the Word and meet new people. If you are blessed to be able to bring a dish, please observe Biblically clean foods, i.e. avoid pork dishes, shellfish, or gelatin products. Please bring fresh cooked dishes and not leftovers if possible. Also after ONEG make sure to bring your dishes and utensils home. If there is any question as to these standards please discuss with the Pastors or Zaken in the Guest Pavilion after the service.
