1 YOUNG ISRAEL OF WEST HARTFORD YOUNG ISRAEL OF WEST HARTFORD 2240 ALBANY AVENUE WEST HARTFORD, CT Web Site: Rabbi s Corner As many of you know I was not able to go to my conference this past week since I got sick but appreciate everyone s wishes and feel much better. I would like to say Yasher Koach to Irina Margulis on a job very well done in coordinating the Yom Hashoah ceremony at Beth El this past Sunday. It was very dignified event and the choice of speaker, Judy Altman, was superb adding so much feeling and so much meaning to the commemoration of the day. Irina not only made sure that the event was well run but that it accorded with all necessary halachot including providing a room for minyan with a mechitza. This was no easy task and I commend her for her efforts. This week I attended the annual Yom Hazikaron ceremony at the JCC the fallen heroes of the IDF as I do every year. I was really proud of our community for putting together this nice program and for showing up in such respectable numbers. I was even more proud of our shul which was so very well represented at the event. I counted members of almost 30 families from our shul who were in attendance. That to me is a great testament to our shul and what we believe in. At both events this week the Hebrew Academy choir performed and I thought that they did an outstanding job. Not only did they sing well and pick meaningful songs to sing, but the students were so well behaved, so well put together, and so appropriate during the ceremonies. This was special for me to see and was a great Kiddush Hashem in the community. I always find Yom Ha Atzmaut to be a hard holiday to celebrate outside of Israel because you are not surrounded by national celebration and enthusiasm for the day. Nevertheless, it is important to try to mark the day as best we can. I appreciate the efforts of Rabbi Ari Weiss for hosting a Tefilla Chagigit a festive Maariv on Wednesday night at Agudas Achim and appreciate all those who attended our shul minyan on Thurs- Continued on Page 3 Editor: Judie Patel Editors Emeritus: Sam Leichtberg & Moish Trencher SHABBAT PARSHIOT TAZRIA-METZORAH April 28th, Iyar 5772 Kiddush in honor of YOM HA ATZMAUT Is sponsored by The following families: Glahn, Harris, Hessing, Jeremias, Kadish, Kanik, Laufer, Leichtberg, Loew, Sr., Luger, Margulis, Moss, Rosenblum, Rothschild, Rutstein, Shamash, Shteyntsayg, Ulreich, Weiss, Wittenberg & Wizenfeld SCHEDULE FOR THIS SHABBAT IN HONOR OF YOM HAATZMAUT: -Remarks from Rabbi Weinberg, -Tribute to Fallen Soliders Lt. 2 Rabbi Weinberg s classes are now resuming: Shabbat Afternoon Class has resumed. They will begin each week 45 minutes before Mincha and will be about the Parsha Melachim resumes May 1st, Stay tuned for few more special Pre-Shavuot classes to come For Shavuot YIWH will be hosting Rabbi Noah & Sarah Cheses Giving Thanks For The State ~ Rabbi Yehudah Amital zt l ( How can we not thank the Almighty for all the kindness that He has showered upon us? First and foremost, the State of Israel serves as a safe haven for five million Jews. After the nightmare of the Holocaust, hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees wandered around the globe, finding a home and refuge only in Israel. The State has contributed an incalculable amount to the restoration of Jewish pride after the devastating chillul Hashem (desecration of God's Name) caused by the Holocaust. Today, too, the State plays an enormous role in the Jewish identity of our brethren throughout the world. For so many of them, the emotional attachment to the State remains the final thread connecting them to the Jewish People and to the God of Israel I experienced the horror of the destruction of European Jewry, and I can thus appreciate the great miracle of Jewish rebirth in our homeland. Are we not obligated to thank the Almighty for His kindness towards us? Unquestionably! And not just on Yom Ha-atzma'ut; each day we must recite Hallel seven times for the wonders and miracles He has performed on our behalf: "I praise you seven times each day!" 3 On behalf of the Board of the Young Israel of West Hartford we'd like to again briefly clarify Page 3 the intended use of the yiwhevents listserv: As you know it was previously resolved to formally dissociate our shul from the "thoughts" listserv on the concern that controversial content posted there might be misinterpreted to represent the views of our institution. As standard bearers for our faith we must take great care to avoid eliciting unnecessary resentment or negative perceptions through our actions and words in public forums, such an an open-access Yahoo group listserv. No board wants to act as a censor, selecting what content is "representative" and what is not. As such the decision was made to delegate all opinion and editorial content to unaffiliated forums, such as the JDWH Yahoo group, while maintaining the yiwhevents listserv for its originally intended purpose of promoting communal life and activities. Many s clarifying the relevant details were sent out in the past, but nonetheless the yiwhevents listserv is still occasionally misused. The board has therefore decided to send out the undermentioned review of content guidelines along with enacting a pedagogical system of as-needed moderation to help complete the transition away from the now-defunct yiwhthoughts listserv. APPROPRIATE for posting to yiwhevents: Local Community Events These include happenings at the Young Israel of West Hartford as well as elsewhere in the local community, of either Jewish or general interest. Lifecycle announcements Births to deaths and everything in between. / Relocation to or from West Hartford. / General news about members of our community. (All responses should be directed to the one who made the announcement and not to the listserv in its entirety.) Job Postings If you are aware of a job opening please consider positing it to the yiwhevents listserv. Emergencies Such as hazardous weather warnings, or police matters, e.g. an All-Points Bulletin. Services/items offered/wanted Posts pertaining to the offering/seeking of local goods and services are appropriate. Examples included asking for a recommendation for a plumber, seeking a ride to New York, or offering items (ideally in exchange for a donation to our shul). INAPPROPRIATE for posting to yiwhevents: Political Content Nothing political at all please. It does not matter what the subject is, be it Jewish, Israeli, or American politics, satire or serious, such posts are not suitable for the yiwhevents listserv. Opinion The yiwhevents listserv is not a forum for personal opinion or editorial commentary. The exception would be speech about local issues, pertaining specifically to our particular community here. National/International Information We all react to significant news with an instinct to share and disseminate. Nonetheless please keep in mind that theyiwhevents listserv is reserved for local matters only; this may seem counterintuitive at times, such as upon learning of a tragedy in Israel, G-d forbid. While passing on such critical information of vital interest is commendable an important and laudable task yiwhevents is nonetheless not the appropriate forum. (National or international events that indicate a need for local heightened alert would fall into the "Emergencies" category.) Chain Letters Regardless of content, including financial opportunities, health concerns, or religious matters. Even if the matter is indeed of general interest, yiwhevents is still not the place to share it. Divrei Torah All Torah learning is a beautiful thing, and more strength to you for engaging in the study that binds us as a people, but the yiwhevents listserv is designed for exclusively local content. As a general rule of thumb consider if the content is particularly locally relevant: A matter of general interest to the larger American/Jewish communities should be reserved for less specialized discussion forums, such as the JDWH Yahoo Group. Note also that the Young Israel of West Hartford will soon transition to a private system for all official announcements, allowing those who wish to unsubscribe to yiwhevents to do so without contraindication. Rabbi s Corner, continued from Page 1. day morning adding to the singing and the atmosphere which ended up being really nice. Yom Ha Atzmaut reminds me of how much I long to be in Israel and of how lucky we are to live in such miraculous times. We continue our celebration of Yom Ha Atzmaut together this Shabbat morning when I will share some remarks, when Ari Shteyntsayg will tell us about some of the fallen soldiers he fought with in the IDF, and when we will recite a special prayer together full of love for the land of Israel and full of hope for our return. Of course the celebration would not be complete without a Kiddush which will be held after services in honor of Israel s birthday. May we celebrate many more milestones in the continued growth of the State of Israel and the continued process towards the final redemption. Shabbat Shalom Rabbi Weinberg
