6 The Table of Nations In our study of The Spread of False Religion it is important to identify the lineages of the sons of Noah in order to identify where each group settled with their religious practices after leaving Babel. 6

7 Genesis 10:1-5 GEN 10:1 Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood. 2 The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras. 3 And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah. 4 And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. 5 By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations. 7

8 Gen 10: The Table of Nations The following map shows the various nations represented by the genealogy of Genesis chapter 10. This map represents the initial scattering after Babel. From this initial scattering, we will soon see that these people later migrated to the remote parts of the world. 8

12 The Table of Nations Genesis chapter 10 is known as the Table of Nations. The Table of Nations is important to the study of the rest of the history of the Jewish people in the Old Testament you will see these families, and the nations they represent, mentioned again and again. The study of the nations these people represent is also important to understanding how the spread of false religions occurred. 12

13 The Table of Nations The people represented by the three sons of Noah participated in the New Testament events, and the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Before we discuss the various nations descended from these three sons of Noah, let s first look at the three sons and their responsibilities in the New Testament. 13

18 The Three Sons Serving Mankind Next, we look at the three sons in their service to mankind. Note particularly the prophecy of Noah about Shem in Genesis 9:26. GEN 9:26 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. This was an indirect blessing on Shem. [50] Shem's well being would be dependent on the spiritual health of the Semite people. [50] They were directly bound to God. [50] 18

24 The Three Sons Serving Mankind [27, 82] We were meant to have all three (Spiritual, Physical, and Intellectual) in harmony. We were meant to develop all three. Notice that the intellectual is placed last. The natural order of these in our lives is the Spiritual, then the Physical, and lastly the intellectual. In raising our children we must remember the order, but not to forsake any. 24

26 Man's Fundamental Responsibilities [27] Man was given three fundamental responsibilities. 1. Fill the Earth with descendents. GEN 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. GEN 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. 26

ISA 11:9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea. HAB 2:14 For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea. 27

30 Genesis 10:1 - Genealogy of the Sons [82] GEN 10:1 Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood. Shem may have been the compiler of this genealogy. He lived 502 years after the Flood, which would have encompassed the entire period of this genealogy. 30

31 Genealogy of the Sons [82] Further evidence that this was written by Shem is that Shem's genealogy is carried to the sixth generation, while Ham and Japheth's extend only to the third. Shem may have lost touch with Ham and Japheth after the Tower of Babel incident, so did not record additional generations for Ham and Japheth. Shem's signature (colophon signature on clay tablets) is found in Genesis 11:10 indicating possible authorship of the tablet it was recorded upon. 31

32 Genealogy of the Sons [82] We find Shem s signature in Genesis 11:10. GEN 11:10 These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood: Like the signature at the bottom of a letter, again in Genesis 11:10, we find the signature verse probably representing the preceding verses beginning with the signature verse of Genesis 10:1. The fact that it was Shem alone strengthens the theory that Shem probably originally wrote the 32 section from Genesis 6:9b to Genesis 11:10a.

33 Genesis 10:2-5 - The Sons of Japheth We now consider the genealogy of the sons of Japheth who they are and where they went: GEN 10:2 The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras. 3 And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah. 4 And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. 5 By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations. 33

36 Japheth The Sons of Japheth [27, 57, 82, 90, 132] Gomer Magog Madai Javan Tubal Meshech Tiras Gomer = Cimmeria, North of the Black Sea (Modern Crimea). Some of Gomer's descendents probably moved into Germany and Cambria (Wales). 36

37 The Sons of Japheth [27, 57, 82, 90, 132] The Sons of Gomer Ashkenaz = Germany (German Jews are called Askenazi). Riphath = Paphlagonians [Anatolia] (next to Black Sea), possibly Carpathians (east central Europe). There s a slight possibility that the name Europe was originally a corruption of the word Riphath. Togarmah = Armenians most probably. Germany may also be from Togarmah. Turkey and Turkestan as well. 37

38 The Sons of Japheth [27, 57, 82, 90, 132] Japheth Gomer Magog Madai Javan Tubal Meshech Tiras Magog = (Lit - "The place of Gog.") refers to Georgia, near the Black Sea. Possibly Josephus says that Magog (or Gog) was the ancestor of the Scythians who originally inhabited the Black Sea area. (see EZE 38:2). 38

39 The Sons of Japheth [27, 57, 82, 90, 132] Japheth Gomer Magog Madai Javan Tubal Meshech Tiras Madai = Ancestor to the Medes. They settled in Persia, and were possibly, together with the Semitic Elamites, ancestors to the Persians. Evidently through this group the Aryans developed, who later migrated to India and became the Indian peoples. 39

40 The Sons of Japheth [27, 57, 82, 90, 132] Japheth Gomer Magog Madai Javan Tubal Meshech Tiras Javan = Ionia (Greece). Both Japheth and Javan are considered the founders of the Greeks. 40

41 The Sons of Japheth [27, 57, 82, 90, 132] The Sons of Javan Elishah = Hellas [a form of Elishah] (Greece). The Iliad mentions the Eilesian people; the Tell el Amarna tablets and the Ugaritic tablets mention the Alasians, people apparently from Cyprus. Tarshish = Identified with either Tartessos in Spain and with Carthage in North Africa. These were Phoenician cities and the Phoenicians were Canaanites. It may be that the descendants of Tarshish were early settlers of North Africa and Spain, but the Phoenicians (Hamites) were later 41 instrumental in their development. (Continued)

42 The Sons of Japheth [27, 57, 82, 90, 132] Kittim = Refers to Cyprus, and possibly to the Greek mainland in "Ma-Kittim" [the land of Kittim] (accounting for the name Macedonia). Dodanim = Probably the same as Rodanim (1 Chronicles 1:7). Probably preserved in the geographical names Dardanelles and Rhodes. 42

Possibly the name is preserved in the Russian city of Tobolsk. In Ezekiel 38:2 they are associated with "Rosh," a name from which the name "Russia" was derived. 43

50 Miautsu People of China [22, 133] The Miautsu people also record the name of Noah s wife in their genealogy as Gaw Bo-lu-en. [22; 133] The book of Jasher indicates that her name is Naamah, daughter of Enoch. JASHER 5:15 and Noah went and took a wife, and he chose Naamah the daughter of Enoch. [149] 50

53 America Before Columbus [129, 141] There is much evidence of knowledge and contact with the American continent before Columbus ever sailed. According to historians and researchers: There is evidence that the Chinese surveyed the Americas as early as 2250 BC, and reported finding the Grand Canyon (Great luminous Canyon). There is evidence of Indo-Sumerian contact with America. 53

54 America Before Columbus [141] Egyptians exchanged culture with the Americas as early as 3000 BC. Phoenicians and Cretans mined copper in Michigan and Ontario as early as 3000 BC. These mines were largely abandoned by 1000 BC as Iron began to replace copper for tools in the Mediterranean about 1200 BC. Black African explorers from Ghana traded with the Americas as early as 1000 BC, and continued trading through the 16th century AD. 54

55 America Before Columbus [129, 141] African skeletons have been discovered in the Americas. Afghan Buddhist missionaries interacted with American culture in 458 BC and made a report to the Chinese emperor forty years later. When plagues ravaged medieval Europe, priests burned pagan manuscripts and maps, thus destroying knowledge of the distant lands and even knowledge of the shape of the earth. [141] 55

59 America Before Columbus [141] Many have looked in Africa and elsewhere for King Solomon s Mines, but, the three years round trip for the gold of Ophir fits perfectly with a voyage to the Americas, particularly South and Central America with additional stops on the way. There is solid evidence of Phoenician and the merchants of Tarshish [Spain] trade with the America s. 59

60 America Before Columbus [129, 141, 142] Asian, Middle-Eastern, European, African, Chinese geographical survey records, ancient maps, and American tribal language similarities, symbols, plants, archaeology, artifacts, Michigan and Ontario copper mine shafts, and more testify that all of this is so. Facial and other features of the various Indian tribes of North and South America attest that America is multicultural in its native American heritage, collecting the scattered people from all over the globe. 60

69 Genesis 10:6-8 - The Hamites GEN 10:6 And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan. 7 And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtechah: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan. 8 And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth. 69

70 The Hamites Cush begat Nimrod - Nimrod descended from Ham. [93] According to Pink, The Chaldee paraphrase of this verse says, Cush begat Nimrod who began to prevail in wickedness, for he slew innocent blood and rebelled against Jehovah. [93] Fausset s Bible Dictionary says that Nimrod means Let us rebel. [34] The name Nimrod comes from "Marad," and means "rebelled." [118] 70

71 Genesis 10:9 - Nimrod GEN 10:9 He [Nimrod] was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD. Compare the mighty hunter before the LORD with Genesis 6:11 - the earth also (in the days of Noah) was corrupt before God. With this word usage you get the idea that Nimrod was in defiance of God. [93] "Before the Lord" can mean against the Lord, or 71 rebellious against God. [118]

72 Nimrod - A Type Of The Antichrist The Jewish TALMUD says that Nimrod was "a hunter of the souls of men." [28] "Mighty hunter" reminds us of Genesis chapter 6 where we see "mighty men," the Nephilim, the race of giants which were the progeny of the "sons of God," or fallen angels. [28] We find that idolatry and false religion began with him after the Flood. [28] Nimrod is a type of the Antichrist. [93] 72

73 Nimrod - A Type Of The Antichrist [56, 93, 134, 135] SEVEN WAYS NIMROD WAS A TYPE OF THE ANTICHRIST 1. Nimrod's name means Rebel. The Antichrist will be called the Lawless One. 2TH 2:8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. 74 Nimrod - A Type Of The Antichrist [56, 93, 134, 135] 2. Nimrod would lead an open revolt against God: "He was a mighty hunter before the LORD." (GEN 10:9). The Antichrist will do likewise as we see in Daniel 11:36 37: DAN 11:36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvelous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall 74 be done. PSA 5:6 Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing [falsehood]: the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man. DAN 11:38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things. 77

78 Nimrod - A Type Of The Antichrist [56, 93, 134, 135] 5. Nimrod was a "king." The Antichrist is called a king. DAN 11:36 And the king shall do according to his will. 78

The Antichrist is called "the king of Babylon" in Isaiah, and is connected with "mystery Babylon" in Revelation. ISA 14:4 That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased! (Continued) 79

80 Nimrod - A Type Of The Antichrist [56, 93, 134, 135] Mystery Babylon is associated with the woman that rides the beast in Revelation 17: REV 17:5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. 80

81 Nimrod - A Type Of The Antichrist [56, 93, 134, 135] 7. Nimrod's desire was to make himself a name. Nimrod had great pride. Satan's man will have great pride. ISA 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: (Continued) 81

84 Genesis 10: 10 - Babel GEN 10:10 And the beginning of his [Nimrod s] kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. In its original meaning Babel meant the gate of God, but afterwards it came to mean confusion. [93] "Bab" means "gate." "El" means "God." [28] "Babal," a related Hebrew word means "confusion." [28, 93] 84

85 Babel Nimrod instituted Imperial Government and a new idolatrous worship - he probably demanded worship as God. [93] "Erech" is possibly a corruption of "Enoch," which in Genesis 4:17 was the very first city to be built before the Flood. [100] GEN 4:17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch. 85

86 Genesis 10:11 - The Babylonian Empire GEN 10:11 Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah, Some scholars believe that this verse should read that Nimrod "went forth into Assyria, where he built Nineveh." [82, 93] The Babylonian Empire was a series of cities of which Babylon was the capital. [82] 86
