This will be a pot-luck luncheon meeting. Please mark your calendars to attend. Rabbi s Message In our Jewish short story class at the temple we recently read I.L. Peretz's "The Golem." As many of you know, the Golem was invented and activated centuries ago by Rabbi Loeb of Prague to help defeat our anti-semitic adversaries. Some believe the character of Superman was based on the legend of the Golem. At the end of Peretz's story, the author writes: "The Golem has not been forgotten. But the Name by which it could be called to life in a day of need has disappeared. The cobwebs grow and grow. What are we to do?"
2 Peretz admonishes the Jewish people to persevere, despite the constant threat to our existence. Today, the threat to Judaism is less from our enemies than from within. Judaism must constantly be practiced, studied and observed. Otherwise the Name -- the God of our ancestors -- will disappear. Our job then is to make sure the Ner Tamid, the Eternal Light, remains aflame. The more we participate in temple events as a community, the brighter that flame glows. In this month of our holiday of lights, the festival of Hanukkah, we pray that the candles in our Menorah will inspire all of us with renewed joy and commitment to our Congregation. Chag Sameach, Rabbi Chapin Hanukkah Play and Pot-Luck Latke Dinner Sunday, December 18 th 5:00 pm $5.00 per adult [kids free] Please join us for a very special presentation of the first half of Latkes and Hamentashen, presented by our robust Religious School students! Back by popular demand on the 20th anniversary of the original performance in Hot Springs, this musical celebration is guaranteed to bring smiles to all! Following the performance, you are invited to stay for a delicious dinner of smoked brisket and mouth watering Potato Latkes. We are grateful to Karen Reagler and others for volunteering to make all those latkes! We ask that everyone bring a salad, vegetable side dish, or dessert to share with everyone. Please make your reservations to the Temple office by 12/12. Reservations are required so that we can adequately prepare and set up to accommodate everyone! Thank you for your cooperation and support! Sisterhood News By Ruth Sedler We had a very busy November. Let me begin by thanking everyone who participated in the Rosa Blum visit. To those who provided her with meals, transportation to and from events, helped cover her expenses for the visit, and worked to make our congregation dinner a success, we could not have done it without each of you. It was wonderful to see us come together as a community to support this project. A special thank you to Joanne Reagler and the Holocaust Remembrance Educational Committee for their tireless efforts to bring this event to Hot Springs. Next a big Thank You to Mary Klompus, who headed the new round table project for Burgauer Hall. She found the tables and ordered them. While she was waiting for them to arrive she had the floors cleaned and waxed. The tables have arrived and been set up so that the next time you are at temple you will be able to appreciate our lovely social hall. But wait - that s not all. She also purchased new pots for the kitchen (on top of the stove), new knives, water glasses, kitchen towels, pot holders, and other items for cooking that needed to be replenished. All of these purchases have been made possible through the generous donations of congregation members to our table and kitchen refurbishing fund. These donors are listed separately in this Shofar. Looking ahead to our December meeting, we will be meeting at the home of Sue Koppel on Monday December 5, 11 am Our lunch hostesses will be Barbara Morgan and Carol Kleinman. Our program will be a book review of Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky, lead by our Rabbi, Richard Chapin. Please put this on
3 your calendars so you can be a part of this wonderful experience. On December 18 there will be a Chanukah play and latke dinner [see separate article page 1] and please do plan to join us. Thank you again to everyone for your help and support. She is presently working at Ati Day Preschool (Temple B'nai Israel in Little Rock) and doing an internship with ADEQ (Ark. The couple will settle in California. Holocaust Remembrance Education Project: Rosa Blum s Visit to Hot Springs Rosa Blum, 83 year-young Holocaust survivor, arrived on November 6th in Hot Springs from Dallas where she lives with her adult son and represents the Dallas Holocaust Museum Center for Education and Tolerance. Rosa came for a three day visit sponsored by the Holocaust Remembrance Educational Project, a committee of Congregation House of Israel Sisterhood. Jerry Tanenbaum, Sue and Hal Koppel, and Joanne and David Reagler donated the funds to make this possible. Over 1650 middle school students and adults had the opportunity to listen to Rosa s story while she spoke to Cutter Morning Star Middle and High School, Hot Springs Middle School 8th graders, Jessieville Middle and High Schools, Lakeside 7th graders, and Unitarian Universalist Church of Hot Springs Village. In addition, Rosa was honored with a dinner catered by the Sisterhood at which time she made a short speech thanking the congregation and all who contributed to bringing her here. Ruth and Ross Sedler donated the wine for the event and Millie and Mick donated the dessert from Ambrosia Bakery. During her visit, the following Sisterhood members entertained Rosa and drove her to her various schools: Mary Watermann, Carla Mouton, Joanne Reagler, Millie Baron and Mick, Karen and David Reagler and their twins, Ruth and Ross Sedler, Kay Fleischner, Betty and Louis Kleinman, and Carol and Shelly Kleinman, In addition, the Sisterhood Dinner was prepared for 70 people by Mary Klompus, Sue Koppel, Sharon Waxler, Millie Baron, Patti Fleischner, Annette Baim, Karen Reagler and Kim Baron. So many other Sisterhood members and their spouses helped decorate the social hall, get ready for the dinner, and clean up afterwards. Thanks to all our board and congregation members who participated and attended the dinner. Malvern 8th graders Kelsey Ruth and Ann Paul, EAST students, recorded one of Rosa s presentations and plan to make a documentary of it. When we get a copy of it, we will make it available for the congregation to see. The Rosenzweig Interfaith Foundation has made a very generous donation of $ to the Interfaith Project of the Holocaust Committee headed by Rabbi Chapin and Reverend Wilson as we go forward to remember Yom HaShoah on April 19, Thanks to Stuart Fleischner and 6
7 Betty Kleinman, members of the Rosenzweig Foundation, and to all that group for their support. The Holocaust Committee is made up of Joanne Reagler, Sue Koppel, and Carla Mouton (who introduced Rosa at all the schools and made all the arrangements with the schools). Rabbi Richard Chapin and Reverend David Wilson thank everyone who helped make Rosa s visit such a rousing, inspiring success. As Carla said to the students, the Holocaust was the ultimate in bullying may it never happen to any people again!!!! Rav Todot Our heartfelt thanks To Joanne Reagler, Sue Koppel, Carla Mouton and Ruth Sedler and everybody else who helped out with Rosa Blum s visit [see Joanne s article above] Toddah Rabbah to: Phyllis Tanner, for the donation of books (now in the shelves of the conference room) Many, many thanks to Mary Klompus for spearheading the major cleanup that has taken place around the Temple last month. Mary took charge of ordering new round tables, had the floors waxed, restocked the kitchen, and cleaned and organized many closets. We are all deeply grateful for the untold hours of her labors of love! Mary also enlisted the help and muscle power from the following: Ruth Sedler, Betty Kleinman, Sue Koppel, Sharon and Michael Waxler, Yossi Baron, and David Reagler! Thanks to a great crew! ****************************************** A little Jewish humor, contributed by Susan Siegel: Do you speak Yiddish? A man asks a passerby, "Do you speak Yiddish?" The man shakes his head. He asks a second man, but gets no answer. He stops a third man. "Do you speak Yiddish?" "Of course." "Please, vat time is it?" Bimah Honors for December December 2 Ruth and Ross Sedler December 9 Ed Berkun and Yossi Baron December 16 Alfred Lewald December 23 Betty Forshberg December 30 Millie Baron There will be a cemetery clean up at Beth Jacob Cemetery on Sunday, December 4th at 1:00.
