3 In January 1999, thirty-three years after the establishment of the Jerusalem Foundation, the International Council of the Foundation decided to create the Teddy Kollek Award. The Teddy Kollek Award is bestowed on a prominent national or international figure and on leading donors who have made outstanding contributions to advancing the social, cultural, educational and physical development of the city of Jerusalem. According to the guidelines established by the Foundation s International Council: The Teddy Kollek Award is granted to persons who have excelled in their support of an open, tolerant and modern Jerusalem which embraces residents and visitors of all religious, national and ethnic backgrounds and seeks to ensure their personal and communal welfare. The Teddy Kollek Award is granted to persons who believe in the values and principles espoused by Teddy Kollek and have worked to advance them through the Jerusalem Foundation. These values include community activism, respect for and understanding of the needs of all populations and creation of true partnership between the State of Israel and the Diaspora communities. The Teddy Kollek Award is granted to persons who strive to strengthen Jerusalem s status as the capital of the State of Israel, a universal spiritual center for believers of all faiths, and a symbol of dialogue, understanding and brotherhood.

5 Widely acclaimed as the great builder of modern Jerusalem, Teddy Kollek was born in 1911 in Nagyvazsony, a part of the Hungarian Empire. Most of Teddy s youth was spent in Vienna. Though not Orthodox, the family had a strong Jewish identity, and though not actively Zionist, his parents who had named him for Theodor Herzl did not discourage him from participating in a youth movement. Teddy began raising funds for Jewish causes at the age of 13, when, in his bar mitzvah speech, he asked the congregation to contribute money to his youth group for the purchase of a canoe. Choosing political activism over pursuit of an academic education, he prepared for life as a pioneer in Israel. Shortly before his departure from Vienna, he met Tamar Schwarz, who was also active in Zionism. In 1935, she joined him after his arrival in Palestine. They married two years later, and were together until Teddy s death. Almost immediately, Teddy, who became one of the founding members of Kibbutz Ein Gev, on the eastern shore of Lake Kinneret, also became involved in a delicate mission for the Jewish Agency that drew on his courage and innate diplomatic skills. One of these missions called on him to return to Europe in 1939 to arrange for permits that would allow 3,000 Jewish Czech youth safe passage to England. In Vienna, Teddy negotiated the release with Adolf Eichmann. During the war, working out of Istanbul (by now he headed the Jewish Agency s political department), Teddy acted as liaison with Jewish underground groups and Allied intelligence organizations in Europe which brought him into contact with David Ben-Gurion. Later, as Ben-Gurion s aide, Teddy, working out of New York, oversaw the smuggling of weapons to the Haganah for use in the War of Independence. He helped arrange for early U.S. aid to the new state, and was an organizer of the Israel Bonds, an essential and novel source of funds for Israel s nascent economy. From 1952 to 1964, Kollek served as Director General of the Prime Minister s Office in Jerusalem, after which he was elected mayor of Jerusalem in Even before Jerusalem s reunification in June 1967, Teddy undertook two projects that were to change the city dramatically. He founded the Israel Museum and established the Jerusalem Foundation. The Jerusalem Foundation gave lovers of Jerusalem worldwide a vehicle for becoming involved in the city, at first with improvements to the physical landscape, but later in education, culture, health care and social services. One of Teddy s great innovations was to earmark donors gifts to the Foundation for specific projects. He created a direct and often very profound link between donors and their families, on the one hand, and specific institutions in Jerusalem on the other. Giving was perceived as much as a privilege as it was a burden. Teddy Kollek was the Mayor of Jerusalem when the Six-Day War saw Jerusalem reunited. When the new municipal boundaries were drawn, the city s area had tripled in size, and some 70,000 new citizens, Arab Muslims and Christians, were added to the existing population of 195,000 Jews. Teddy Kollek was able to bring to bear all his creativity, determination, charm, and vision to his new job, and the people of Jerusalem rewarded him by re-electing him five times in 1969, 1973, 1978, 1983 and Under his tenure, Jerusalem became a different city. In the four decades since its establishment, the Jerusalem Foundation which Teddy served as Chairman and then as Honorary Chair until his death has raised some one and a half billion dollars and realized more than 4,000 projects. Its work has been carried out in both Jewish and Arab neighborhoods, among religious and secular residents, making no distinction between ethnic groups. Visitors to the city have benefited from some of the most visible undertakings, but the primary beneficiaries have been those who live here, whose numbers have risen from some 265,000 before the Six-Day War to over 800,000 today. Teddy's achievements took place under near impossible political conditions. Decisions about the city s boundaries were made at the national level, with strategic considerations that didn t necessarily relate to the needs of a growing and underprivileged city. Teddy worked with a difficult reality and the results he reaped seem no less fantastic today than they did as they were taking place. 7 Alan Hassenfeld The Hassenfeld Family Initiatives Foundation: The Hassenfeld name is most closely associated with one of the world's largest toy manufacturing companies, Hasbro, Inc. Yet, it is also synonymous with a worldwide dedication to philanthropic causes and improvement of the human condition. The Hassenfeld family has been dedicated to Israel and Jerusalem for numerous decades. Alan Hassenfeld is the current Chairman of the Board of the Jerusalem Foundation in the United States; a leadership role he has held with distinction for the past decade. Alan Hassenfeld's commitment to Jerusalem starts with Jerusalem's children and extends to the elderly. The Hassenfeld Family has supported and lent their name to the Hassenfeld Family Community Center, located in Kiryat Hayovel, which serves children and youth. In the same location, the Hassenfeld Center for the Elderly, established by Sylvia Hassenfeld, was built to offer assistance to the neighborhood's growing population of senior citizens. The Jerusalem Variety Center for Child and Family Development is yet another testament to the Hassenfeld family support for Jerusalem's youth. The Variety Center unites numerous agencies and organizations that treat disabled children, providing an integrated system of preventative, curative and rehabilitative services.

8 Understanding the importance of environmental education, Alan Hassenfeld supports a rain water harvesting program in dozens of schools throughout the city in both Jewish and Arab neighborhoods educating the next generation to be environmentally responsible. The Hassenfelds have left an indelible mark on Jerusalem's cultural landscape with their stalwart support for the excavation and renovation of the Merrill Hassenfeld Amphitheater (also known locally as the Sultan's Pool), named after the patriarch of the family Merrill Hassenfeld, who passed away in The Merrill Hassenfeld Amphitheater, with the magnificent Old City walls as a backdrop, has been enchanting Jerusalem's residents and visitors for decades. Most recently, Alan Hassenfeld has spearheaded worldwide efforts to build Teddy Park, in celebration of Teddy s life and to honor all those who helped build modern-day Jerusalem. The park lies in what was formerly "no man's land," between east and west Jerusalem and is developing into a beautiful and welcoming destination point; a symbol of unity and a gathering place for all of Jerusalem's residents. At the Park s center, Alan has dedicated the Sylvia Hassenfeld Family Fountain, a sound and light water fountain that is the first of its kind in Israel. Alan Hassenfeld's philanthropic support continues through his work as Chairman of the Hassenfeld Family Foundation Initiatives, promoting human rights, empowering women in developing countries, and undertaking initiatives to improve the economy, education, and business opportunities in Rhode Island, his home state. Alan is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and is the recipient of numerous honorary doctorates from renowned universities. Alan is following in the footsteps of his father, Merrill and his mother Sylvia may she celebrate with us in Jerusalem for many years to come. The Hassenfeld Family has set philanthropic standards worldwide and remains a role model to this day. Alan and his family's love for Jerusalem, Israel and its people knows no bounds and he believes passionately in building a Jerusalem, and a State of Israel, that will truly be a light unto the nations.

10 אלן האסנפלד קרן יוזמות משפחת האסנפלד השם האסנפלד נקשר מיד לאחת מיצרניות הצעצועים הגדולות בעולם חברת הסברו. אבל זהו גם שם שנקשר למחויבות למטרות פילנתרופיות בכל רחבי העולם. משפחת האסנפלד מסורה לישראל ולירושלים מזה עשרות שנים. אלן האסנפלד משמש כיו"ר הוועד המנהל של הקרן לירושלים בארה"ב, תפקיד מוביל אותו הוא ממלא בתחושת שליחות מזה כעשור. מחויבותו של אלן האסנפלד לירושלים נוגעת לכל תושבי העיר: מבני הגיל הרך ועד לבני גיל הזהב. משפחת האסנפלד תמכה והעניקה את שמה למינהל הקהילתי בקריית היובל המשרת את כל תושבי השכונה ובעיקר ילדים ובני נוער. בסמוך אליו נמצא מרכז גיל הזהב ע"ש האסנפלד המעניק סיוע לאוכלוסיה המתבגרת של השכונה. מרכז וראייטי, המשמש בית חם לילדים עם צרכים מיוחדים ובני משפחותיהם, הוא עדות נוספת לתמיכתה של משפחת האסנפלד בילדי ירושלים. מתוך הבנת החשיבות שבחינוך הסביבתי, אלן האסנפלד תמך בתכנית לאיסוף מי גשמים בעשרות בתי ספר ברחבי העיר במערבה ובמזרחה. זאת תוך חינוך הדור הצעיר לאחריות סביבתית ושמירה על הסביבה בה הם חיים. משפחת האסנפלד הותירה חותם משמעותי על נופה התרבותי של ירושלים על ידי תמיכתה בשיקום מתחם בריכת הסולטן שלמרגלות העיר העתיקה והקמת האמפיתיאטרון הנקרא ע"ש אב המשפחה מריל האסנפלד. בתקופה ההרודיאנית שימש המקום כמאגר מים לתושבי העיר ואילו היום הוא משמש כבמה קסומה שהתפאורה הטבעית שלה היא חומות העיר העתיקה. מהפילהרמונית הישראלית ועד ליריד חוצות היוצר, להקות רוק ישראליות ואמנים בעלי שם עולמי כל אלה ועוד הופיעו ומופיעים במקום ומעשירים את חיי התרבות של ירושלים.

11 Julia and Henry Koschitzky The Koschitzky name is well known in Canada and indeed throughout the world. Both Henry and Julia are active philanthropists on behalf of world Jewry and are fiercely dedicated to Jerusalem and Israel. Julia and Henry, married since 1963, are a model of community leadership in Canada where they have supported Jewish education and social welfare across the communal spectrum. Julia began her activism as president of the Parents Association of the Associated Hebrew Schools of Toronto, the community day school that her children attended and ever since, has held countless positions in the non-profit world including as chair of the Toronto UJA (United Jewish Appeal) Women s Division Campaign, officer of the UJA/Federation of Greater Toronto, president of UIA (United Israel Appeal)/Federations Canada, member of the Keren Hayesod World Board of Trustees and a member of the Board of Governors and Executive Committee at the Jewish Agency for Israel. Julia played a central role in Operation Exodus, the immigration of Jews from Russia to Israel, chaired the Toronto celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of Israeli statehood and chaired the UJA/Federation s Israel Advocacy program. Julia is also the immediate past President of the Jerusalem Foundation of Canada. Julia and Henry Koschitzky have received too many awards and accolades to mention, among them are: the Woman of Valour Award of Toronto s UJA Business and Professional Women s Division (1990); the Commonwealth Medal given on the 125th anniversary of Canada s Confederation (1993); the Jerusalem Award of the Canadian Zionist Federation (1994); the Ben Sadowski Award for outstanding dedication to the Toronto Jewish Community (1997); the Israel Goldstein Prize conferred by the Knesset for

12 outstanding service to the Keren Hayesod (1997); the Volunteer Service Award of the Province of Ontario (1999) conferred by the lieutenant-governor; an honorary doctorate from Yeshiva University (2003) and the Bronfman Award from the Canadian Jewish Congress (2010). In Jerusalem, the City Center would not look the same without their support. The community center, re-dedicated as Canada House, is home to young people who work and volunteer in the neighborhood, cultural activities, services to the elderly, an ulpan for new immigrants to learn Hebrew and a performance hall. The well known Emek Refaim Street in the German Colony houses Beit Yehudit, a community center for youth, with after school activities, summer camps, conferences, a farmers market every Friday and a permanent home for the Shira Hadasha synagogue. Julia and Henry are the proud parents of four children, Serena, Hartley, Jonathan and Leelah, two of whom live in Israel. If you ask the Koschitzkys about their greatest achievement, they would point to their 18 grandchildren.

15 Sonja Dinner: The DEAR Foundation Sonja Dinner s philanthropic work, as an individual and as President of the Board of The DEAR Foundation in Switzerland, transcends religious and ethnic divisiveness. Sonja knows that the grim face of poverty is the same worldwide. Sonja s philanthropy started in 2000 and using her business connections, she created awareness and raised funds for the causes she holds dear. After a successful career as CEO and primary shareholder of the information technology company Heyde AG, Sonja used her skills to independently advise Swiss Banks and its customers on philanthropic and humanitarian investments. Sonja serves on the advisory boards of many humanitarian and non-profit organizations that implement worldwide capacity building programs. She serves on the board of the Jerusalem Foundation in Switzerland and she has been the President of the Board of The DEAR Foundation since Cost-effective and sustainable projects are critical to Sonja, who believes that cooperation among various NGOs and government organizations is essential to the success of any project. Sonja lives by the motto that education and improved living conditions are the only way to change the fate of those who are poverty stricken. Sonja has ambitious goals: give as many children as possible a meaningful childhood and empower the poor to live a dignified and independent existence, free from charitable handouts. This work takes her not only to Israel and the Middle East, but also to all parts of Africa, Asia and Central and South America.

16 These very goals drive Sonja and The DEAR Foundation s committment to some of the most needy of Jerusalem s children. The DEAR Foundation supports children in the Mahane Yehuda market, known as handcart children, who should not be working but playing, giving them a chance to be children again. Ethiopian immigrant children now have a chance at success thanks to The DEAR Foundation s support for a literacy program. A shining example of The DEAR Foundation s and Sonja s pledge to transcend our differences and put tolerance and understanding above all is their support for the Hand in Hand High School for Bilingual Education, where Jewish, Muslim and Christian students learn together, and the Speaking Art Conference which fosters dialogue between Jews, Muslims and Christian artists. Understanding the importance of giving people a hand up rather than a hand out, The DEAR Foundation supported the Women s Independent Network for Muslim women in the Old City, so that they can learn and market a skill. Sonja is keenly aware that dignity also applies to those who are elderly and for this reason The DEAR Foundation supported the renovation of Beit Hofmann, a day care center that truly breaks the mold by offering vibrant activities for golden agers. Sonja resides in Switzerland. She is a frequent visitor to Jerusalem and is personally involved with the projects The DEAR Foundation supports.

19 Ruth Cheshin Lifetime Achievement Award Ruth Cheshin's life and work are intertwined with Jerusalem's history and development. The great-granddaughter of Yoel Moshe Salomon, a visionary and pioneer of modern Jerusalem, Ruth Cheshin is a sixth generation Jerusalemite. Almost since the day of the Jerusalem Foundation's founding by Teddy Kollek in 1966 and until this very day, she has tirelessly concentrated her efforts on bettering Jerusalem through the Foundation and its various enterprises. In 1965, upon Teddy Kollek's election to the office of Mayor of Jerusalem, Ruthi began working at the Municipality and was partner to the establishment of the Tourism Department of the then divided city, which was nearly devoid of tourists. During the subsequent Six Day War, when the Municipality was left without most of its personnel who were drafted into the army, she served in a variety of roles and spearheaded a number of special projects such as organizing a campaign to distribute food and milk to children in east Jerusalem and later, when the battles died down, producing the festive concert on Mt. Scopus marking the city's unification. Following the city's unification in 1967, Ruthi began orchestrating the work of the nascent Jerusalem Foundation. Jerusalem's scant resources made the Foundation's efforts an existential necessity for the city's development. Under her leadership, the Foundation raised over one and a half billion dollars, invested in the initiation, establishment and operation of thousands of physical projects and programs in Jerusalem, serving the city's residents, east and west, in the fields of education, culture, coexistence, social services, beautification and preservation.

20 Over the course of her term as Director and later as President, Ruthi was the driving force behind the establishment and development of the Foundation's ten long-lasting branches around the world (in the United States, Canada, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, France, Italy, Britain and Israel). Parallel to her role at the Jerusalem Foundation, she serves as Chair of the Mishkenot Sha'ananim Cultural Center and Guesthouse and is a member of the boards of directors of many public institutions including the Sam Spiegel Film and Television School, the Jerusalem Music Center in Yemin Moshe, the Cinematheque, the Tower of David Museum of the History of Jerusalem and more. Her responsibilities as President of the Jerusalem Foundation were performed, throughout the years, voluntarily. Until recently she served as a member of the board of directors of the well known company Teva Pharmaceuticals. Ruthi has been instrumental in raising the shining star of Jerusalem in particular, and of Israel in general, on the international horizon. Due to her stewardship, donors and friends, Jews and non-jews alike, are inspired to take part in the building of Jerusalem as partners in all steps and stages of projects of their choice from their very inception. Ruthi carefully safeguarded transparency, particularly in regard to the Foundation's partnerships with donors, with the Foundation contributing its knowledge and experience to the city's needs and enabling the donors to realize their dreams. For over forty years, Ruth Cheshin cultivated the Jerusalem Foundation's ethical motifs while preserving its status as an apolitical organization: promoting respect among the varied populations and sensitivity to the needs of all ethnic sectors residing in the city, strengthening partnerships between Israel and the Jewish people in the Diaspora and, above all, investing in Jerusalem's inimitable qualities to empower its residents and enhance the experience of its visitors. The Jerusalem Foundation's endeavors throughout the city set an example of world-class urban development, positioning Jerusalem in its rightful place of honor among the most beautiful and inviting capital cities of the 21st Century. Ruthi is married to Mishael Cheshin, former Justice of the Supreme Court of Israel. She is the mother of three children and grandmother to six.

21 רות חשין הצליחה להעלות את קרנה של ירושלים בפרט וישראל בכלל בקנה מידה עולמי. התורמים, יהודים ושאינם יהודים, חדורי שאיפה להשתתף בבניינה של ירושלים בהיותם שותפים בכל השלבים והמהלכים של הפרויקט שעבורו הם תרמו מיום לידתו. היא הקפידה לשמור על שקיפות ובמיוחד על שותפות בין התורמים לבין הקרן שעה שהקרן תרמה את הידע, הניסיון והתוכן והתורמים נתנו את האמצעים הדרושים להגשמת החלום. במשך למעלה מארבעה עשורים טיפחה רות חשין את המוטיבים הערכיים של הקרן לירושלים בהקפידה לשמר את מעמדה כגוף א-פוליטי: כיבוד הדדי בין קבוצות האוכלוסייה השונות בעיר, גילוי רגישות לצרכי כל המגזרים העדתיים והאתניים החיים בה, העמקת תחושת השיתוף בין ישראל ליהודי התפוצה, ומעל לכל - העצמת סגולותיה של ירושלים, כלפי היושבים בה והבאים בשעריה. מפעליה של הקרן לירושלים בעיר מהווים מופת לפיתוח אורבני ובלעדיהם הייתה ירושלים מתקשה לתפוס מקום נכבד בקרב בירות תבל של המאה העשרים ואחת. רות חשין נשואה למישאל חשין, סגן נשיא בית המשפט העליון בדימוס, אמא לשלושה ילדים וסבתא לשישה.

23 The Jerusalem Foundation founder, former Mayor of Jerusalem Teddy Kollek, had a dream of building a pluralistic city where all of its citizens could live together equally religious and secular, veteran and new immigrant, rich and poor, Muslim, Christian and Jew.
