1 Acts 10 God made nothing "Common" Intro World events Seems like the world just keeps revisiting the same issues. It's as if we really haven't progressed forward. The events after Stephen's death- Philip and the Samaritans, then the Ethiopian Cornelius- the first Italian receives the Gospel. Then Peter- we love Pete. So many of us identify with him in ways we care not to share. Pete that loses his cool and cuts a guys ear off to protect Jesus then hours later would deny he even knew him. Pete who will build a sermon series for us in the fall is referred to as satan by Jesus. Consumer Faith. Pete that brings in Pentecost but then as a hard time giving the gospel to those that aren't in the same ethnic background as he. Acts 10: On the next day, as they were on their way and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop about the sixth hour to pray. 10 But he became hungry and was desiring to eat; but while they were making preparations, he fell into a trance; 11 and he *saw the sky opened up, and an object like a great sheet coming down, lowered by four corners to the ground, 12 and there were in it all kinds of four-footed animals and crawling creatures of the earth and birds of the air. 13 A voice came to him, Get up, Peter, kill and eat! 14 But Peter said, By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything unholy and unclean. 15 Again a voice came to him a second time, What God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy. 16 This happened three times, and immediately the object was taken up into the sky. 2 Peter gets "Hangry" 17 Now while Peter was greatly perplexed in mind as to what the vision which he had seen might be, behold, the men who had been sent by Cornelius, having asked directions for Simon s house, appeared at the gate; 18 and calling out, they were asking whether Simon, who was also called Peter, was staying there. 19 While Peter was reflecting on the vision, the Spirit said to him, Behold, three men are looking for you. 20 But get up, go downstairs and accompany them without misgivings, for I have sent them Myself. New American Standard Bible: 1995 update. (1995). (Ac 10:17 20). LaHabra, CA: The 21 Peter went down to the men and said, Behold, I am the one you are looking for; what is the reason for which you have come? 22 They said, Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous and God-fearing man well spoken of by the entire nation of the Jews, was divinely directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and hear d a message from you. 23 So he invited them in and gave them lodging. New American Standard Bible: 1995 update. (1995). (Ac 10:21 23). LaHabra, CA: The regarded by the jews, but he is not a jew 28 And he said to them, You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a man who is a Jew to associate with a foreigner or to visit him; and yet God has shown me that I should not call any man unholy or unclean. 29 That is why I came without even raising any objection when I was sent for. So I ask for Page 2. Exported from Logos Bible Software, 2:41 PM July 21, 2016.
3 what reason you have sent for me. New American Standard Bible: 1995 update. (1995). (Ac 10:28 29). LaHabra, CA: The Where the problem begins 1 Now the whole earth used the same language and the same words. 2 It came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3 They said to one another, Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly. And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar. 4 They said, Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth. 5 The LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. 6 The LORD said, Behold, they are one people, and they all have a the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another s speech. 8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city. 9 Therefore its name was called a Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of the whole earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth. New American Standard Bible: 1995 update. (1995). (Ge 11:1 9). LaHabra, CA: The Lockman Foundation. I. Racism is not a problem of skin but one of sin. (Quote by Rick Warren) Page 3. 4 Racism is the result of man's sin. In these passages we see man was trying to make their own stairway to heaven. They actually begin this, God is like this not good. They actually think this will work. The problem here is man is becoming to dependent on itself, they have or are losing sight of the fact that they need me. So to humble them and bring them back to me I must separate them. Biblical explanation of PANGEA Ever since that moment of Genesis 11 mankind as never been united in anything until Acts 2. Acts 2:11 "we hear it in our own language" Sin brings about division and destruction, but the message of the gospel brings about unity. One of the themes from the book of Acts is "What sin destroys the Gospel of Christ rebuilds" Peter even says to Cornelius- "you know what the law says" referring to the temple law II. God made nothing that was common Peter was struggling with this greatly, as did most Jews. Lets face it, even today this is still a problem. People have Superiority complexes which causes others to have inferiority complexes. May we see that what God has made is not ordinary but extraordinary. We must see what Peter finally understood: III. God shows no partiality 34 Opening his mouth, Peter said: I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality, 35 but in every nation the man who b fears Him and does what is right is welcome to Him. New American Standard Bible: 1995 update. (1995). (Ac 10:34 35). LaHabra, CA: The You need to hear this today. Maybe you are the one thinking that for that a certain people group needs to hear the gospel message but you don't think it can come from you. While some of us would never want to admit it, we have issues with worshipping God with others that don't look like us or talk like us. That is just sin living in you, may you recognize today that those people are just like you in the eyes of Jesus. Jesus died for them as well. Maybe you are the one that feels like you have to look a certain part or have your life all together before God will accept. May you know this morning that he loves you for who you are. 5 7. confound their language literally, their lip ; it was a failure in utterance, occasioning a difference in dialect which was intelligible only to those of the same tribe. Thus easily by God their purpose was defeated, and they were compelled to the dispersion they had combined to prevent. It is only from the Scriptures we learn the true origin of the different nations and languages of the world. By one miracle of tongues men were dispersed and gradually fell from true religion. By another, national barriers were broken down that all men might be brought back to the family of God. Jamieson, R., Fausset, A. R., & Brown, D. (1997). Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible (Vol. 1, p. 24). Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc. The word for hunger is only used here in all of known Greek literature. Its exact connotation is impossible to know, but with the PREPOSITION pros added, it may mean extreme hunger, but this is surprising in this context. This hapax legomenon (words used only once in the NT) must remain uncertain until more lexical information is discovered. It must remain uncertain as to why Luke chose to use this rare term, but the general sense of the context is obvious anyway. Utley, R. J. (2003). Luke the Historian: The Book of Acts (Vol. Volume 3B, p. 135). Marshall, TX: Bible Lessons International. Peter may be the first "Hangry" Christian (my personal thoughts, no evidence but I think Luke is meaning this) Page 5. Exported from Logos Bible Software, 2:41 PM July 21, 2016.
