4 News TOP STORY Netanyahu Takes on Defense Post In Prime Time Call for No New Elections TEL AVIV - Saying he was determined not to go to elections in such a sensitive time, Prime Minister Netanyahu said yesterday he would temporarily assume the defense minister portfolio, in addition to the five other portfolios he already has. Netanyahu said heading to elections now, amid repeated violent confrontations with Hamas, was irresponsible of his coalition partners, who have been pushing for early polls since the resignation last week of Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman over the ceasefire. Today, I take on for the first time the position of defense minister, said Netanyahu, speaking from the Kirya, Israel s version of the Pentagon. We are in one of the most complex security situations and during a period like this, you don t topple a government. During a period like this you don t go to elections. Lieberman s departure leaves the coalition with a one-seat majority of 61 in the 120-member Knesset. - Jewish Home leader Naftali Bennett has already threatened to bring down the government if he is not appointed defense minister. He and Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked are set to deliver a statement to the media this morning. A meeting between Kulanu leader Moshe Kahlon and Netanyahu yesterday ended with no results, but the two agreed to talk again later this week. Either party leaving the coalition would lead to new elections. Netanyahu to Give Up Foreign Affairs Ministry Netanyahu reportedly plans to give up his position as foreign minister, primarily out of concern that the High Court would not permit him to serve as both foreign minister and defense minister at the same time as prime minister. US Votes for First Time Against UN Condemnation of Golan Occupation NEW YORK - For the first time, the United States voted against an annual United Nations resolution condemning Israel for its control of the Golan Heights. In the vote Friday, 151 countries voted in favor, with Israel and the U.S. casting no votes. Fourteen countries abstained. It was one of ten resolutions that passed with various degrees of overwhelmingness against Israel. As usual, no other country was condemned. The repeated introduction of this annual resolution on the Golan Heights is ridiculous, Trump envoy Jason Greenblatt tweeted. When the Syrian regime continues to slaughter its own citizens, the UN should be focused on issues of genuine urgency instead of employing tired rhetoric & grandstanding against Israel. 6 NATIONAL NEWS Trump Pondering Dismissal of Up to Five Cabinet Posts WASHINGTON - President Trump isn t committing to a previous pledge to keep chief of staff John Kelly for the remainder of his term, part of widespread speculation about staffing changes that could soon sweep through his administration. In a wideranging interview that aired on Fox News Sunday, Trump praised Kelly s work ethic and much of what he brings to the position but added, There are certain things that I don t like that he does. There are a couple of things where it s just not his strength. It s not his fault. It s not his strength, said Trump, who added that Kelly himself might want to depart. Asked whether he would keep Kelly in his post through 2020, the president offered only that it could happen. Trump said he was happy with his Cabinet but was thinking about changing three or four or five positions. One of them is Homeland Security chief Kirstjen Nielsen, whom Trump said he could keep her but wished she was tougher on immigration and enforcing border security. - Trump said he would not get involved if his choice for acting attorney general, Matt Whitaker, decided to curtail special counsel Robert Mueller s investigation. Whitaker was previously a fierce critic of the probe, and Democrats have called for him to recuse himself from overseeing it. Trump said that It s going to be up to him and that I really believe he s going to do what s right. - Trump downplayed a judge s temporary order to restore CNN reporter Jim Acosta s White House press pass but decried the lack of decorum among reporters who cover his administration. Trump said the White House was going to write up rules of conduct for reporters at news conferences, adding, If he misbehaves, we ll throw him out or we ll stop the news conference. Democrat Nelson Finally Concedes to Scott as Florida Recount Ends TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Becoming the last holdout of a major race, Sen. Bill Nelson finally conceded that he lost yesterday to Republican Rick Scott after a recount of Florida s counties showed him trailing by more than 10,000 votes. It likely spelled the end of the political career of the 76-yearold Nelson. Trump congratulated Scott on Twitter: From day one Rick Scott never wavered.
