Apostasy comes first. First in sequence is what the Greek word proton means. Man of Lawlessness is a specific person, denoted by the definite article the. See Appendix 2 The Man of Lawlessness below. The listing of descriptions of the man of lawlessness in detail showing his opposition and rebellion against the Yahweh. Demands worship and declares himself the only god in Yahweh s Temple. Does this mean a third temple building in Jerusalem or is the Church, God s Temple (2 Cor 6:16)? See 1 Thessalonians 4 & 5. what restrains him now means the man of lawlessness already exists at the time of the epistle. Mystery meaning something hidden which is now revealed. Might be parallel idea with 1 John 2:18. He who now restrains him is obviously a masculine person and is currently and actively restrains this man of lawlessness. So not only does this man of lawlessness exist at the time of 2 Thessalonians, so does he who now restrains. All future tense verbs. will be revealed will slay consume with fire as in Luke 9:54. Consistent with 2 Thess. 1:7 bring to an end abolish, wipe out, set aside. appearance - (parousiav) or Parousia of His coming, usually denotes the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Notice same word Parousia in Greek is used for Christ and the man of lawlessness as contextually parallel with the one whose coming The man of lawlessness will come with wicked 3

5 APPEDNIX 1 The Day of the LORD Below are all the Bible Verses containing the exact phrase the day of the Lord. Please notice the descriptions of the day of the Lord. This is the key to understanding its intent, purpose and scope. This phrase is an eschatological theme that runs through the Scripture. Is. 13:6 Wail, for the day of the LORD is near! It will come as destruction from the Almighty. Is. 13:9 Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, Cruel, with fury and burning anger, To make the land a desolation; And He will exterminate its sinners from it. Ezek. 13:5 You have not gone up into the breaches, nor did you build the wall around the house of Israel to stand in the battle on the day of the LORD. Ezek. 30:3 For the day is near, Even the day of the LORD is near; It will be a day of clouds, A time of doom for the nations. Joel 1:15 Alas for the day! For the day of the LORD is near, And it will come as destruction from the Almighty. Joel 2:1 Blow a trumpet in Zion, And sound an alarm on My holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, For the day of the LORD is coming; Surely it is near, Joel 2:11 The LORD utters His voice before His army; Surely His camp is very great, For strong is he who carries out His word. The day of the LORD is indeed great and very awesome, And who can endure it? Joel 3:14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. Amos 5:18 Alas, you who are longing for the day of the LORD, For what purpose will the day of the LORD be to you? It will be darkness and not light; Amos 5:20 Will not the day of the LORD be darkness instead of light, Even gloom with no brightness in it? Obad. 15 For the day of the LORD draws near on all the nations. As you have done, it will be done to you. Your dealings will return on your own head. 5

6 Zeph. 1:7 Be silent before the Lord GOD! For the day of the LORD is near, For the LORD has prepared a sacrifice, He has consecrated His guests. Zeph. 1:14 Near is the great day of the LORD, Near and coming very quickly; Listen, the day of the LORD! In it the warrior cries out bitterly. 1Cor. 5:5 I have decided to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 1Th. 5:2 For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. 2Th. 2:2 that you not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. 2Pet. 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. 6

7 APPENDIX 2 The Man of Lawlessness I this another description for the anti- Christ? This is what we know about him in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-12. We notice the man of lawlessness will be revealed (apokalufyh), the same word used to describe Jesus revealing a supernatural event. It must be a supernatural revelation since the man of lawlessness will come this signs and false wonders. 2 Thessalonians 2 the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above every so- called god or object of worship so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God. And you know what restrains him now, so that in his time he will be revealed. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only he who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way. Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming; that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved. For this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false, in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness. Are these descriptions in 2 Thessalonians consistent with other descriptions in the Scripture? Here are some possibilities. Daniel 7:23-27 Thus he said: The fourth beast will be a fourth kingdom on the earth, which will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth and tread it down and crush it. As for the ten horns, out of this kingdom ten kings will arise; and another will arise after them, and he will be different from the previous ones and will subdue three kings. He will speak out against the Most High and wear down the saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make alterations in times and in law; and they will be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time. 7

8 But the court will sit for judgment, and his dominion will be taken away, annihilated and destroyed forever. Then the sovereignty, the dominion and the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Highest One; His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey Him. Daniel 9:24-27 Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy place. So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty- two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress. Then after the sixty- two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined. And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate. Revelation 13 And the dragon stood on the sand of the seashore. Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten diadems, and on his heads were blasphemous names. And the beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave him his power and his throne and great authority. I saw one of his heads as if it had been slain, and his fatal wound was healed. And the whole earth was amazed and followed after the beast; they worshiped the dragon because he gave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him? There was given to him a mouth speaking arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for forty- two months was given to him. And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, those who dwell in heaven. It was also given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them, and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him. All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain. If anyone has an ear, let him hear. If anyone is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; if anyone kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. Here is the perseverance and the faith of the saints. 8

9 Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb and he spoke as a dragon. He exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. And he makes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed. He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down out of heaven to the earth in the presence of men. And he deceives those who dwell on the earth because of the signs which it was given him to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who *had the wound of the sword and has come to life. And it was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast would even speak and cause as many as do not worship the image of the beast to be killed. And he causes all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free men and the slaves, to be given a mark on their right hand or on their forehead, and he provides that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty- six. (Re 13). 9
