1 Trusting God Courageously Note to the Teacher This book has been prepared for a fi rst-grade child who is just learning to read. The book is perforated so you can tear out each sheet, complete it in class, and/or send it home with the child. Each page includes directions for completing the learning activities on that page. The parent letter is on page 3, and page 4 contains an overview of this quarter s lessons along with a list of all the memory verses. Send this page home with the child on the fi rst Sunday of the quarter, or deliver it personally before the quarter begins. The memory verse recognition chart is included with the attendance chart. Each child will receive a paw print sticker to add to the chart when he says the verse. He will receive the sticker the week after you teach the verse in class; e.g., on September 9 give him the sticker for reciting Psalm 86:10. Using the Handwork Sheets The Exploration Review section of each lesson is an opportunity to review the previous week s lesson. The activities on the back of each week s handwork sheet are designed for this review. Let the children do as much as possible from the time they arrive until about fi ve minutes into the class time. Make sure the children s names are on their papers before you collect them. Point out to the children that the logo says God s Explorer. When the child writes his name on the line, he is confi rming that title for himself. You will use the handwork sheets again at the end of the lesson in the Explore Some More section. Students will work on the activities on the front side of each sheet at this time. Let children do as much as time permits, but if they cannot complete the page in class, allow them to take the sheet home and fi nish it. Offer an incentive for them to bring it back next week. 2 Fall Quarter 2012 D ear Parents: With all the things you have to do and places you could go each Sunday, we are excited that you have chosen to bring your child to the Primary Department of our Sunday School. Our Primary Department is structured for first and second graders and our curriculum is called God s Explorers. In addition to hearing the Bible lesson each week, your child will participate in many fun, interactive learning activities. Encourage your child to tell you what he has learned each Sunday. This quarter your child will learn that God is trustworthy, that he can trust God, and that God can help him show courage to take a stand for what he knows is right. A study of strong Bible characters such as Daniel, Gideon, and David will help him to do this. Discuss your child s worksheet with him when he brings it home each week. Encourage him to complete any unfinished work and take the worksheet back the next week. Also set aside time each week to help your child learn the Bible verses listed on the back of this letter. He will begin to learn the verse in class, but he needs to review it during the week. He will receive a verse sticker to place on his recognition chart when he says the verse in class the following week. Encourage your child to read the God s Explorers take-home paper each week. Each paper contains an application story, a review of the Bible story, and fun things to do that are related to the Bible lesson. There is a section just for parents called Parent Pointers for Primaries. The ideas listed there will help you reinforce the Bible-based themes at home. 3 Quarter Themes Weeks 1 4 God Is Trustworthy This unit sets the tone for the rest of the quarter. God used Elijah to teach the people of Israel that their God is the one true God and is worthy to be trusted. Lesson 2 confirms that Jesus, the Son of God, is worthy to be trusted. In lesson 3 your child will learn why Bartimaeus felt he could trust Jesus. The last lesson concerns Rahab, a heathen woman living in the enemy city of Jericho. She put her trust in the Israelites God. Your child will learn what made her believe that God could be trusted to keep His promise. Weeks 5 8 Trusting God Though the Bible people in this unit had giant problems (literally for David), they learned that God can be trusted to provide and protect in a mighty way. Gideon, David, and Esther were all given the assignment to deliver God s people from their enemies. Your child will discover that even if his problems are small, he can trust God to help him. Weeks 9 13 Showing Courage The lessons in this unit focus on Daniel and his three friends Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These four young Jews showed courage as they strived to live for God as captives in the foreign land of Babylon. They set an example for every young believer whose faith and trust in God is challenged.
