2 An Introductory notes to Parents Dear Parents, The world of digital media is a fascinating place for children and for adults. Our children are digital natives, they were born into this virtual world. As adults, we are visitors to this world. (However, wisdom and life experience still trump tech savvy.) The point of the 5 th grade retreat, What Would Jesus Do on the Internet?, is to let the children know that God lives everywhere, even in the virtual world. As followers of Jesus, we are to apply Christian principles to all our interactions online. Love God, Love your neighbor (family and friends), as you Love Yourself. The appropriate, safe use of the Internet can be a way of showing love. I have tried to let the children see that technology and religion are not incompatible. Throughout history, the Catholic church has taught that a proper, positive use of technology appropriate. I encourage you to take the time to read through this material and watch the videos. You may want to watch them a second time in the company of your children. Hopefully, they can be springboards for family discussions. Edie Boudreaux, Religion coordinator, St. Aloysius School

4 Would you be my friend? Later in the retreat, this individual was introduced to the children and his medical condition was explained. (He is the Ms. Boudreaux s brother. ) Students were asked to write their responses on index cards which were then given to the small group leaders to be turned in.

Neutral Response Negative Response Activity Activity Very Negative Response When asked why the types of responses changed so much, students responded that knowing who the person was changed their response. Having an adult monitoring their input was not a factor at all. We could draw the conclusion that emphasizing the human factor, that people online are real people, students may be kinder and more Christian in their interactions.

8 Opening Prayer (Matthew 5, 1-12) When he saw the crowds, Jesus went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you [falsely] because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

9 Opening Prayer Religious speakers in Jesus s time were like today s rock stars or sports heroes. People would travel great distances when they heard that a famous rabbi was in the area. Together we pray, Lord, open our ears, our minds and our hearts to receive your word.

10 Opening Prayer (Mt 6, 9-13) This is how you are to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and do not subject us to the final test, but deliver us from the evil one.

11 Opening Prayer People in Jesus time did not have cell phones to keep a calendar and take notes. They did not even have notebooks to write down information they wanted to remember. They relied on memorization. This is why Jesus s followers asked for a prayer that they could keep in their memories. We still pray this prayer today. All- Our Father.

12 Opening Prayer (Luke 4, 16-21) He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.

13 Opening Prayer Leader- Jesus used the best technology of his day. He read from the scroll. His reading was from the Book of Isaiah, the book that announced the coming of the Suffering Servant Messiah. In this passage, we hear Jesus proclaiming himself to be the One sent by God. Today, we understand that Jesus was not just a great teacher and prophet, but he was actually the Son of God. All - Glory Be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, it is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

20 Small Group Activity- Using Technology to Spread God s Word 1. Moses uses the Egyptian technique of writing on papyrus to write God s Word (Approx BC) 2. The Essenes copy and store scrolls to preserve scripture writings (Beginning approx 300 BC) 3. St. Paul writes and sends letters to the new church communities he began (Approx. 50 AD) 4. Do talk to your parents if you don t like them posting your pictures online. Do spend time together unplugged from technology.

30 Love Your Neighbor- Protect Your Friends Do not take pictures or videos of friends doing inappropriate things. Do not post pictures or videos unless everyone in picture or video has given permission. Do not make rude, inappropriate or hurtful comments on line.

32 Love Yourself- Protect Your Physical Safety Do not reveal personal information to strangers. This includes friends you meet on gaming sites. Do not post pictures of yourself or friends in identifying uniforms. vivordiaries

33 Love Yourself- Protect Your Physical Safety Do take a screen shot of inappropriate or threatening posts or texts. This can be used as evidence. Do tell your parents if someone is inappropriate or threatening to you on line. Do put your cell phone in another room at night. The light and ringing of incoming messages can destroy vital sleep patterns.

34 Love Yourself- Protect Your Physical Safety Do limit screen time. One hour on the screen strains your eyes as much as 7 hours reading a book. 20 minutes work- 20 feet away- 20 seconds. Do protect your eyes from blue light. (Can cause macular degeneration by burning the back of your eye.) Put devices on night mode. Wear blue blocker lenses. Eat leafy green vegetables.

35 Love Yourself- Protect Your Present and Future Reputation Do not ever take naked pictures of yourself or anyone else. Do not use the internet as a personal diary. Oversharing can cause many problems later in life. Do not ever copy work and say it is your own. Do not ever post anything that you do not want your parents, school, college and future employers to see.

40 Live in the real world, not the virtual world. The internet is a great tool, but it is only a tool. It is not the world. Spend time outdoors. Humans are creatures of nature. Sunlight, fresh air and exercise are necessary for us to be healthy. Make plans with friends. Don t depend on the cell phone for last minute activities. Make time for your family. Appreciate the relationships you have now and strengthen them for the future.

41 Activity- Take the Pledge Take time to silently reflect on all that was discussed today. Fill in My Technology Pledge. When finished writing and signing your personal pledge, sign the grade level poster.

43 5 th Grade Activity- Make a Positive Mark Each group has a Bible quote. Demonstrate, illustrate, act out the quote. Make a 30-second video. When finished, bring ipad to Ms. Boudreaux and air drop completed video.

44 Closing Prayer Service Opening Prayer- Heavenly Father, we thank you for gathering us here today and giving us the opportunity to learn how to praise and glorify you through the appropriate use of the internet. Please look down and note the seriousness of the pledge we have taken today. Jesus, you were human and you knew temptation, guide us when we are struggling to make good decisions about using the media. Holy Spirit, bring us your gifts of wisdom and right judgment so that we do not misuse the media in ways that would show disrespect for God, or endanger our family, our friends, or ourselves. Help us to pause and think before we hit the Send button. We ask this prayer from the depths of our hearts. Amen.

46 Closing Prayer Service- Eccl 3, 1-8, God has made everything appropriate to its time, but has put the timeless into their hearts so they cannot find out, from beginning to end, the work which God has done. I recognized that there is nothing better than to rejoice and to do well during life. Moreover, that all can eat and drink and enjoy the good of all their toil this is a gift of God. I recognized that whatever God does will endure forever; there is no adding to it, or taking from it. Thus has God done that he may be revered. The Word of the Lord.
